The Sony Alpha a58 DSLR Camera with DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II Lens is a compact digital SLR camera that blends high imaging performance with a host of intelligent and intuitive features to help achieve optimal results for both still and moving imagery. The a58 houses a 20.1 megapixel APS-C-sized Exmor HD APS CMOS sensor and BIONZ image processor, which work together to produce clear, detailed imagery with impressive low-light sensitivity to ISO 16000 and fast performance that enables up to 5fps full-resolution continuous shooting. The processor and sensor combination are also significantly benefited by the unique Translucent Mirror Technology, which effectively directs light to both the image sensor and focus sensor simultaneously. This enables the 15-point AF system to work continuously even while recording video and photographing in a continuous shooting mode. In regard to video, full HD 1080i/p video is supported at both 60 and 24fps, respectively, in the AVCHD version 2.0 format. The Internet-friendly MP4 format is also available when recording 1440 x 1080/30p movies for a more streamlined and efficient workflow.

The Translucent Mirror Technology also provides two means for image compositions, playback, and menu navigation: an electronic viewfinder and a rear LCD monitor. The SVGA Tru-Finder OLED EVF has a 1,440k-dot resolution to permit crisp live view monitoring of subjects and also allows you to preview the effects of camera settings while using an eye-level viewfinder. The rear 2.7" 460.8k-dot Clear Photo LCD monitor features a tilting design to greatly benefit working from both high and low angles, and the larger size is well-suited for image review.

For refining the overall look and appearance of imagery, an array of imaging features are incorporated into the a58 that allow you to both achieve optimal exposure results as well as apply creative effects. Auto HDR works to extend the dynamic range of a single exposure by combining three separate exposures-one over, one neutral, and one under-to garner the greatest tonal detail within a single frame. Multi Frame NR and Hand-held Twilight both work to enable hand-held shooting capabilities and noise reduction processes to aid shooting in dimly-lit conditions. When working with portraiture and still lifes, Auto Object Framing and Auto Portrait Framing work to create aesthetically pleasing compositions, based on the rule of thirds, automatically from original images. These modes utilize a system of intelligent detection and exposure methods to crop and enhance the look of imagery to create a new image that is both compositionally and tonally balanced in addition to the original image taken.

Also included with the a58 digital camera is the Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-82.5mm to provide from wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. This lens features the SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) to offer quick and quiet performance that facilitates video recording and subject tracking. In regard to the lens construction, two aspherical elements and one ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element are incorporated to help reduce chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range while also helping to produce sharper imagery.

20.1MP Exmor HD APS CMOS Sensor and BIONZ Image Processor
The 20.1MP APS-C-sized Exmor HD CMOS sensor produces high resolution imagery that exhibits notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 16000 with advanced noise reduction technologies. The BIONZ image processer also contributes to a high image quality and also provides enhanced speed and performance throughout the camera system, including a fast full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5fps.
Translucent Mirror Technology
Translucent Mirror Technology is a unique design that enables the mirror to continuously direct light to both image and autofocus sensors to provide continuous phase- and contrast-detection focusing for quick and precise performance. The additional speed afforded to the camera by eliminating the need for a swinging mirror benefits many shooting features including the fast continuous shooting rate, continuous focusing when shooting movies and working in continuous shooting modes, and also allows for the use of a high resolution electronic viewfinder for eye-level live view monitoring.
15-Point Continuous Autofocus
Utilizing the Translucent Mirror Technology, the autofocus system is able to continuously monitor the image frame and alter the autofocus quickly and responsively. This continuous focusing is especially useful when critical focus is required during video recording or when shooting in continuous modes. It uses 15 points, including three cross-type sensors, for a great deal of accuracy and speed when determining focus placement. The focusing system also works in collaboration with subject recognition technologies to provide enhanced focus tracking that can lock onto subjects and maintain focus even when the subject is moving within the frame.
Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II Lens
The included 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens has a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-82.5mm and features a portable design that makes it ideal for use in a wide variety of shooting situations. The integrated SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) provides quiet, quick, and precise focusing that well-suits video applications and tracking of moving subjects. Additionally, this lens features a refined rear element shade that helps to minimize internal surface reflections and prevent flare and ghosting in order to produce clear, contrast-rich imagery.
OLED EVF and Tilting LCD Monitor
For live view monitoring, image review and playback, and menu navigation two distinct viewing options are available: a high-resolution electronic viewfinder or a large rear LCD monitor.
  • The SVGA Tru-Finder OLED EVF features a bright and sharp 1,440k-dot resolution and provides 100% frame coverage for complete compositional accuracy. The finder has adjustable magnification and eye-point settings for more comfortable viewing possibilities and the eye-level viewing position can also serve as an additional point of contact between oneself and the camera for greater stability when shooting with longer lenses and in low-light conditions.
  • The rear 2.7" 460.8k-dot Clear Photo LCD monitor provides a larger medium for viewing and composing imagery. It features a tilting design that is able to turn 135° upward and 55° downward to provide easier viewing when working from high and low angles.
  • Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1920 x 1080 video recording is supported in both 60i and 24p frame rates in the high-quality AVCHD version 2.0 format. The Translucent Mirror Technology enables both full-time live view monitoring and continuous autofocus while recording for greater precision and ensured sharpness. Additionally, recording is also possible at 1080/30p in the MP4 format for a more streamlined workflow when shooting for web purposes.
    SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
Sony's SteadyShot INSIDE is in-camera, sensor-shift type image stabilization that helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake up to the equivalent of 2-4.5 shutter speed steps; resulting in sharper, clearer imagery. Since the image stabilization system is housed within the camera body, any compatible A-mount lens can be used in conjunction with the a58 to receive image stabilization benefits.
    Auto Object and Portrait Framing
Auto Portrait Framing and Auto Object Framing modes automatically create compositions revolving around your portrait and still life subjects and aesthetically crop your imagery based on the rule of thirds, where the subject is located within the frame, exposure on your subject, and, in the case of portraiture, the direction he or she is looking. Face Detection, Smile Shutter, and Face Recognition modes are all used in conjunction with Auto Portrait Framing for creating effective portraiture in a highly efficient manner. iAuto and By Pixel Super Resolution technologies are employed in both modes to render cropped images with full detail and clarity that also exhibit optimal exposure balance that is dependent on the newly-created composition. When working in either mode, the cropped image is saved in addition to the original, unedited photo.
    Auto HDR
When this mode is selected, three separate bracketed exposures are made at a time and then automatically composited into a single file. This resulting file represents a longer range of tones in highlights, mid-tones, and shadows than is possible in a single exposure. Unlike traditional high dynamic range capture, this mode does not require the use of a tripod and simplifies the entire process into a simple, in-camera function.
Multi Frame NR and Hand-held Twilight
Similar in theory to an HDR image, Multi Frame NR and Hand-held Twilight feature a noise reduction technology that automatically combines six different images into one file for a reduction in noise up to two ISO stops (to an equivalent of ISO 25600). These modes also provide you with the ability to make handheld exposures with minimal image blur due to the fact that six individual exposures are being made at a faster shutter speeds compared to one long exposure.
    Picture Effects
A variety of picture effects are supported for in-camera image-processing and creative applications. These effects include Posterization (Color and Black & White), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (R, G, B, Y), High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft High-Key, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-Tone Monochrome, and Miniature.

The camera does everything that at candid/street photographer needs, and does them incredibly fast. It was nice of Sony to put all of this in a budget-priced camera--small, light, cuddly--nice.

The front element of this lens rotates when it focuses, so you can't use a filter. Get the 18-135mm lens instead--it doesn't have this problem.

great slr with noisy video focus

as a slr the alpha slt a58 is a real good buy, however the noise from the focus during video recording renders the camera useless in most of my applications.

Comments about Sony Alpha a58 DSLR Camera with DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II Lens:

Bought this to work with my old lens that I used on a Minolta 7D. They're a sigma 70-200 2.8 and a tamron 27-70 2.8. Both work great and the color comes out great too.

This camera is great for amateur photographer or a light hobbiest.
The Lens that comes with it is nice. Not great in low light but still takes a good picture on a sunny day.

We wanted to upgrade from a previous Sony digital, this is our 3rd Sony. The picture quality is outstanding! So far we're just using the automatic settings and they work great. As we get more familiar with it, I expect the image quality to be even better. Our service from B & H was fast and accurate, we're very pleased with our experience and the camera.

I'm enjoying my Sony Alpha a58 DSLR. Its an awesome easy to use introduction digital camera. The Alpha models offers an arrange of different lens that can better enhance your images. Another cool secret I found is that I can use my dated Minolta Lenses from the 80's-90's on my Sony! I look forward to snap more great shots and videos.

First, the customer service at B&H was spot on. I went into the store not knowing what I wanted and came out with an incredible camera that I abosultely love! My very first one mind you. The camera provides easy to follow icons for taking the perfect pic. The auto-shoot option takes 8 pics in seconds. I was able to capture my daughters volleyball spikes with incredle clarity. I always wished I could take close, clear, action-oriented pics. Now, with this camera, I can to the enjoyment of myself and my family. Thank you B&H!

I have other Sony Alpha bodies and I love each of them, however, this one is the fastest by far. The focus time, and lock time are great, the menus are more intuitive, just an easier all around camera to use.

I needed a Sony DSLR due to my inventory of Minolta Lenses.. Did lots of research on Sony Alpha cameras.. finally deciding on A58 with a Lens, that was great features and value for the price. I loved B&H bundle of Camera Case & SD card. Charged the battery and I was shooting images and the bag was perfect! All my Minolta lenses fit perfectly. The A58 is awesome! I showed it to Pro Photographer friend - he checked it out and liked A58 very much. B&H Shipping and customer support was fantastic. So i am Very happy !!

I compared cameras to replace the point and shoots I used to replace my Nikon 35 MM. Wanting to get back to taking control of my photos, the A-58 fits me perfectly. It has great flexibility and is easy to use with enough sophistication to take great pictures-which it does. It is fairly lightweight and very comfortable to use even with my big hands. I am loving it. Great price too! As part of the package I bought the 55-200 MM telephoto- the extra 100 bucks for the 55-300 MM might have been worth it. I am sure I will be adding some lenses in the future.

Took this camera system to the 70th Anniversary of D Day in Normandy France. It performed as expected and the pics are truly great. The one issue I had with the camera is in low light. Even in manual focus mode, the camera refused to take a picture when it couldn't find its own focus points. Went to full manual mode but the opportunity for the jump into Normandy was lost. Otherwise, this is a strong camera system and I enjoyed using it.

I am a real estate photographer. My 'go-to' camera , a Sony SLT A35, had to be sent in for repair. I bought this as a back-up, as I liked the SLT feature. This had as many features as my A35, which cost me twice as much when I bought it. The A58 is 20mp as compared to the 16mp of the A35. I highly recommend this camera. I have found the Sony cameras stand up well to travel and frequent use in various conditions.

Comments about Sony Alpha a58 DSLR Camera with DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II Lens:

First, let me say that this is my first SLR like camera. I mostly shoot non-moving subjects and as a piano player, I like to record my music.

I briefly tried the Nikon d3200 so any comparisons will be made to that camera.

With their SLT line of cameras, Sony has created a great alternative to Canon and Nikon that is genuinely different. Its fixed translucent mirror provides a number of special features

                            POSITIVES:
                            Viewfinder
The a58 uses an electronic viewfinder which may not be as clear as an optical viewfinder, but it can show a very accurate preview of what a photo will look like. Stepping up from a point and shoot, I appreciate this feature. The EVF responds very fast so moving the camera creates very fluid natural movement on the EVF except during exceptional low-light (nighttime with only street lamps).

                            Screen
As the camera has a translucent mirror, pictures can be taken using the LCD screen with full speed autofocus. This makes it easy for friends to use the camera if need be. On the d3200, using the screen will slow down the autofocus.

The screen also tilts up or down which I find very helpful, and because using the LCD doesn't slow the autofocus as it does on other DSLR's, shooting from the waist is very easy. The d3200 has a fixed screen.

Image Quality: I cannot say that it is better or worse than its competitors. However, one big feature I appreciate is the multi-frame noise reduction / handheld twilight mode. This mode takes multiple photos and combines them to provide a better photo in low light. I have found that it works really well and I now use it all of the time when taking photos of non-moving subjects in poor lighting.
Note: handheld twilight is a scene mode and MF Noise Reduction is considered an ISO setting.

The camera JPEG sharpening is a bit subdued which can be good or bad. I personally would like just a little bit more sharpening. This can be fixed in the camera settings.

Video : As video can use the faster phase-detection autofocus all the time, autofocus is very fast. I cannot compare the actual quality to any other cameras as I have not tested video on any other SLR like camera.

Image Stabilization: Image stabilization is built into the camera. This means that you can buy cheaper lenses and still have image stabilization. Nikon relies on each lens having image stabilization and many still do not. Nikon lenses with image stabilization are often more expensive.

                            Minor Pros:
                            Battery Life
The a58 is rated to take over 700 shots and in my experience the battery will last through more than a whole day of shooting. The d3200 is rated to take only 500 shots.

                            Burst Rate:
At 5fps with autofocus, the a58 is relatively fast. There is also a dedicated 8fps mode which crops some of the photo.
(d3200 burst rate is 4fps without autofocus)

Old lenses: The camera has a built in autofocus motor, so old minolta lenses can easily be used with autofocus. I am planning on buying a cheap minolta lens so I can go to slightly more dangerous locations without worrying about breaking the lens. The D3200 does not have an autofocus motor so many old Nikon lenses will not be able to autofocus.

Focus-peaking: Focus-peaking puts an outline around areas that have high contrast and are therefor likely in focus. This makes manual focus easier and it also works during video. The color and intensity of the focus-peaking can be changed. D3200 does not have this feature.

                            Grip:
I love the grip on the a58. I consider it to be better than the one on the d3200 although this may just come down to personal preference.

                            Noise:
Because the mirror does not have to flip, the camera is relatively quiet.

                            NEGATIVES (not film ones):

Video: Video cannot be shot in 60 fps progressive even in 720p resolution so I can't turn movies into half speed slow motion. The d3200 can shoot 60fps in 720p.
Video is also missing manual audio control. In my opinion, the audio levels change too fast which makes music videos sound poor as the loud parts of songs sound about the same as the quite parts.
For some reason, video autofocus and manual controls cannot be used at the same time.

                            Noise: Autofocus is loud

Translucent mirror: Some of the light entering the camera is lost due to the translucent mirror, so if you often shoot in low light, this may be an issue. Multi-frame noise reduction can help in this aspect.

Button layout: Some of Sony's button choices are a bit strange. They allow some buttons to be reprogrammed, but others cannot. For instance, there is a dedicated button for Sony's special digital zoom, a feature I never use except occasionally for video. This button cannot be changed. However, the ISO button next to it can be changed. Also, there is a button for picture effects. This picture effects buttons only works in Manual modes and video modes, but there is also a separate mode on the mode dial for picture effects. Why picture effects is important enough to have two physical spots is beyond me. HDR on the other hand has to be accessed through the function menu.
Switching between raw and JPEG can also be cumbersome on the camera.

                            Minor cons:
No IR receiver for remote shutter release.
Viewfinder: EVF may not be as clear as an optical viewfinder.

Screen: screen is only 460K dots rather than the standard of over 900K dots like on the d3200. However, I find that the d3200 screen is less useful because it cannot articulate and using the screen to shoot pictures slows the autofocus.
The screen is also less than 3 inches across which is a bit small.

                            Random Notes
Megapixels: 20.1 megapixels on a58 vs 24.2 on d3200. I would not use megapixels as a factor when comparing cameras, but I'll list this here.
a58 can record movies for 29 minutes instead of 20 on the d3200
Ta58 has a plastic lens mount instead of a metal one. It feels very solid.
Lens: The kit lens focuses closer than I expected at the long end of the zoom.
I have heard that Sony's sweep panorama is the best in the industry, but I never use this feature.

So overall, I would definitely recommend this camera. It is generally affordable, has many unique features, and its in-body image stabilization could save money down the line, but it may not be the best for everyone due to its unique approach in viewfinder and for its other minor issues.

I'm quite new at photography metier and I'm very well satisfied with quality.of the photos I've been taken. Pay attention only with the range of aperture, may be a bit desappointing for someone more demanding.

Has fast shutter. I bought this camera for sports photography for a local magazine. You may have to take more pictures to capture some great ones, but it gets the job done.

Amateur and hobbist. The Sony A58 is an excellent entry level APC sized sensor camera. Numerous other smaller 4/3 system camera models cost hundreads more while comparable entry level APC models are equivalent but also cost more (Canon SL1 for example). Picure quality and ease of use of the A58 are both excellent. I use a single Sony lens wide to tele 18-250 that is reasonably balanced to the size and weigh tof the body so lens changing is minimal. The only other lens I use is a Sony 50 mm portrait lens with great DoF effects.

I'm a relative newbie when it comes to cameras, so the fact that I was able to take great pics and videos right out of the box attests to this camera's usability. I mostly use the Sony for making short videos and the HD quality is excellent.
