The Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478DR Light Meter and X-Rite ColorChecker Passport with Sekonic Gray balance Card combines the innovative L-478DR light meter with touch screen interface and flash power control and the ColorChecker Passport to simplify the process of calibrating your camera for accurate exposure levels and colors. Utilizing free software from Sekonic and X-Rite, photographers can easily create an exposure profile of their cameras, calibrate their meters and make color profiles that will deliver optimal color and exposure settings for specific photo and cine applications.

The L-478DR is an incident and flash meter featuring a color touch screen interface. The touch screen-based navigation lends itself to a highly intuitive and efficient workflow, allowing you to quickly modify exposure settings and navigate menus. This meter is also highly versatile and capable of measuring flash, incident and reflected light for still, HD video, or cine applications.

The L-478DR can be customized or adapted to your own specifications; depending on the metering modes you use most often, you can hide certain modes to create a more streamlined menu system. Exposure constants include shutter speed, f/-number, ISO, shutter angle, and frame rate; and the exposure variable can be decided upon depending on the situation you are working in. Illuminance and luminance values can also be taken, which are measured in footcandles/lux or candela per square meter/foot-lamberts, respectively. For more fine-tuned results, you can create and input personal profiles, allowing the meter to display exposure settings in accordance with your specific camera's dynamic range and clipping points.

When working with wireless flash metering, the L-478DR has the ability to wirelessly control the power of your flashes via PocketWizard ControlTL technology. Pairing this technology within a light meter enables you to wirelessly adjust the power output from full to 1/64th power for either Nikon or Canon strobes that are mounted to a PocketWizard FlexTT5 transceiver (optional), or to certain studio strobe packs using PocketWizard ControlTL receivers. It will also trigger standard PocketWizards like the Plus or MultiMax series, or any strobe with built-in PocketWizard support. 20 standard channels and 3 CTL zones are available for use with strobes, and your wireless settings can be modified through the menu settings. Depending on the number of lights you are using, you can alter the output of each device from the meter and take a subsequent reading from the main screen. Once each flash group has been measured individually, you can determine your overall exposure settings and transfer those settings to your camera*.

Other settings available include the ability to memorize up to 10 different exposure readings in order to refer back for comparative overall measurements. The AVE/EV setting allows you to make one master exposure reading and have subsequent readings displayed as differential values based on the master exposure value. When working with flash metering, the flash exposure values can be expressed as a percentage of the flash-to-ambient light, giving you the ability to more easily alter and previsualize lighting ratios. Filter compensation and exposure compensation settings can also be applied in order to remove the necessity to apply different filter factors after a meter reading has been taken.

The ColorChecker Passport provides the standard 24-color patch for creating DNG profiles, a creative enhancement target for evaluating warm and cool tones and shadows, a white balance target and the Sekonic Gray Balance Card available only in this special bundle. The Sekonic Gray Balance card enables you to do incident-only calibration with the Sekonic Data Transfer System (DTS) and reflected light calibration with the separately purchased Viewfinder 5º attachment.

The targets are housed in a protective, compact, "passport" case that reduces color fading and contains a built-in stand for optimal placement.

*Note: When using the L-478DR for wireless power control, the applicable PocketWizard units must be updated to the latest firmware. Furthermore, the Mini TT1 or Flex TT5 radio (optional) must be set to "No Change (Trigger Only)" mode. This will allow the L-478DR to function as the master controller, and ensure that your camera will not alter the power settings of the flash groups.

Color Touch Screen Interface and Design
  • The touch screen provides a more intuitive style of navigation and allows you to simply touch the settings you wish to adjust. Menu navigation is intuitive and the handling of various configurations becomes an expedited process.
  • Simple visual layout provides a clear view of your exposure setting and permits customization in regard to the information you wish to be displayed (including a choice of analog exposure scales (EV or f/-stops); 1, 1/2, or 1/3 step increments; the inclusion of 1/10 stops; and the option to hide metering modes you do not use frequently).
  • One physical menu button provides access to a more in-depth menu system that is then navigated through the touch screen. This menu allows for you to program exposure profiles and modify custom settings for your meter.
  • Measure and memory buttons are located on the side of the device for recording and initiating exposure readings. A PC sync terminal is located on the bottom of the device for direct, corded flash metering. A USB terminal is located on the side and provides a connection point to your computer for firmware updates and for loading exposure profiles to your meter. The attached light receptor features a retractable Lumisphere that can be rotated 90° clockwise or 180° counter-clockwise. It is also removable in order to facilitate the use of optional attachments.
  • Wireless Flash Power Control
  • Wirelessly control and modify the power output of PocketWizard-mounted/enabled strobes or flashes directly from your meter.
  • Three sliders allow you to dial up or dial down flash power from full to 1/64th power directly from the meter.
  • Up to three zones can be managed; when working with more than one zone, determine each zone's values individually in order to establish desired lighting ratios, then an overall exposure sum will be determined.
  • Versatility Between Metering Methods
  • Ability to measure incident or flash light and display exposure readings as f/-numbers, shutter speeds, or ISO settings for use with still imaging, HD video, and cine uses. Exposure constants also include frame rate and shutter angle for a variety of motion uses.
  • Also capable of measuring illuminance as footcandles/lux or luminance as candela per square meter/foot-lamberts.
  • Flash metering can display the percentage of flash-to-ambient light within the scene for precise lighting ratios.
  • Comparative metering can be accomplished by using the AVE/EV function; allowing you to set a standard reading and have subsequent readings shown as the difference in exposure value.
  • Cinematic modes offer creative options for setting frame rates between 1 to 1000fps or shutter angles from 1° to 358°.
  • Filter compensation mode enables you to directly apply the effects of filters to your exposure reading. Up to four different filter factors can be applied at once, and up to 30 different filter factors can be stored for use (24 common filters are pre-programmed, including CTB, CTO, ND, +/- green, and 85 amber filters).
  • Custom Profiling
  • You can enable and disable different metering modes from showing up in menus, allowing you to configure the meter to your own personal workflow.
  • Calibration and custom profiling can be accomplished in accordance to your own personal camera by executing a series of exposure tests, processing the tests through Sekonic's Data Transfer Software (included), and outputting the results as a personal profile for use with your meter. These personal profiles confine your meter to work within your specific camera's dynamic range (up to 10 distinct profiles can be saved). Profiles can also be modified or created directly through the meter.

The X-Rite ColorChecker Passport provides three photographic targets in a compact, durable case which minimizes color patch fading. Utilizing the included camera calibration Software, the ColoChecker allows you to quickly and easily capture accurate color, enhance portraits and landscapes, and maintain color control and consistency from capture to edit. The Creative Enhancement Target provides enhancement patches and allows you to check shadow details and highlights and check and control color shifting. The Classic Color Target lets you evaluate specific colors and create a DNG profile and the White Balance Target will allow you to have consistent, customized, in-camera white balance. Also included is a built-in stand to provide you with optimal shooting angles.
    Sekonic Gray Balance Card
Also housed in the ColorChecker Passport and only available bundled with the Litemaster L-478-Series meters is the specially produced Sekonic Gray Balance Card. The purpose of the Sekonic Gray Balance Card is to enable reflected-light calibration when using the separately purchased Viewfinder 5º attachment. There is an "Incident Only" calibration method available with Sekonic's Data Transfer System that needs no additional accessories.
    Data Transfer System
Sekonic's Data Transfer System (DTS) simplifies exposure and meter calibration using the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport with Sekonic Gray Balance Card. With Sekonic's DTS Version 3, you can create an exposure profile and map out the dynamic range of your DSLR or digital video camera. Transferring this data to the Sekonic L-478DR meter enables it to recognize which details of a scene or subject will be properly imaged and which will be over or under the range of the camera. There are two ways to calibrate the L-478DR meters using Sekonic's DTS Version 3 software: incident-only calibration using Sekonic's DTS enables creating exposure profiles for precise metering without need for additional accessories, and reflected-light calibration requires the L-478-series Viewfinder 5° attachment, available separately, to read the Sekonic Gray Balance Card for calibrated reflected-light readings.

Comments about Litemaster Pro L-478DR Light Meter and X-Rite ColorChecker Passport with Sekonic Gray Balance Card:

I love this for multiple strobe shooting because it helps nail the exposure every time. I also like the % of flash feature when using flash outdoors. I wish they would add more triggering options other than just pocket wizards but thats no big deal the Colorchecker Passport is great especially when doing events with multiple shooters its great way to have all shots look like them came from the same shooter.

I shoot in both a studio and outdoors. as far as i am concerned it is a nessecary piece of studio eq. The large screen is easy to see and very intuitive. the touchscreen was easy to get used to and fast to adjust settings. If you have studio lights you need this meter. you can read and use it in the darkness of a studio easily.outside it takes the guess work out of exposure. The buttons are rubber gripped as is the side of the meter for easy pushing and holding. The color checker and software aare very easy to use,

Using the combination of the Sekonic Litemaster Pro L-478DR Light Meter with the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport ensures that I have a correct exposure with accurate color tones each time I press the shutter! This is an excellent incident meter which eliminates the guesswork when dealing with high contrast subjects. I use both the meter and the Passport in the studio and at all of the sporting venues where I shoot. Above all else, this combination of tools gives me confidence in knowing that my exposures and colors will be spot-on every time!

I could not decide which light meter to get at first, but after reading several reviews and weighing the options, I decided to go with this model. So far I have been happy with the purchase. The ability to trigger the pocket wizard devices was the most sought after option. Getting the color checker passport was the icing on the cake.

Each year I try to dive a little deeper into photography. This year is about getting color and exposure to a predictable level prior to post production. I did my research prior to making this step exploring the websites and product specifications and watching many tutorial videos from B&H, the product companies, and other u-Tube videos. I thought this would all be easy, not really. After a month of so of on and off experimentation with this I think I have got to where I wanted to go, be patient. The exposure meter is the most daunting part of the project and getting it right for a collection of cameras in many different light scenarios. Do, try and tweak, and then using the factory settings vs your results to see the differences. It will probably be some time before I can say without a doubt that the specific setting for each camera and conditiion are what I envisioned. I will take my time and many photos for comparison of my settings against the factory setting. This year I will be using this specifically for landscape photography. Now the X-Rite Color Checker Passport has been very easy for me to comprehend. I now use it as the first shot at any outing. I wanted this to calibrate the four main cameras I use when I am out so I may achieve consistent color across each camera.

This is the first new meter I've owned in several years. In the past I owned several older analogue-type Spectra light meters for motion picture work as a D.P. Now, I'm retired and shooting lots of stills as well as digital video. This seemed like the perfect answer as I also own a bunch of Pocket Wizard units. This meter is so versatile! I can quickly set it for still photography, or light to a specific level for video, or control my strobes in the studio direct from this meter. I've done exhaustive tests and this meter is dead-on accurate for exposure. I haven't used the color chip canes that come with the meter yet, but I'm sure they'll be very helpful in post. This meeter is vey easy and simple to use which I love on a busy set!

I use this so far mainly for indoor flash photography. I find it very ease to use, though I am only using the basic features.

I really like the fact that after pressing the button to measure a flash I have 90 seconds to shoot a test flash.

Accurate and easy to use, works well with others (studio lighting etc.), I have my middle gray for each camera on line and in the field. Cameramen love having this info before-hand, as well as the cutting room during post-production. I love working my light meter to paint with light while my cameras sit atop their tripods.
