The Sony HVL-F20M External Flash is an on-camera flash that supports the use of the Sony Alpha TTL system and is compatible with Sony's Multi Interface shoe. When compared to the built-in pop-up flash of many cameras, this flash helps to extend the effective flash working distance by providing a guide number of 65.6' / 20m at ISO 100. Additionally, this flash can serve as a wireless controller for triggering an off-camera flash.

For controlling the flash exposure the Advanced Distance Integration (ADI) flash metering system works in collaboration with Alpha cameras and lenses that feature an integrated distance encoder to intelligently produce balanced results. By accounting for the subject-to-camera distance, as well as ambient light and subject reflectivity, the ADI system works to control the flash output in order to provide precise, consistent flash exposures.

A built-in diffuser helps to control the spread of the flash; when enabled the spread is wider to suit working with wide-angle lenses, and when disabled the flash beam is narrower and longer to benefit working with telephoto lenses. Additionally, the head can tilt between 0-75° for bounce applications and greater control over the direction of the flash.

The HVL-F20M provides a guide no. of 65.6' / 20m (ISO 100), which effectively extends the flash range beyond that of a built-in pop-up flash.
The Multi Interface shoe connection enables expanded compatibility with Sony Alpha cameras in addition to other cameras featuring a traditional hot shoe.
Accurate TTL flash metering is possible when used with compatible Alpha cameras and lenses that incorporate a distance encoder. The Advanced Distance Integration (ADI) flash metering system works to produce both exposure and white balance compensation regardless of background conditions. By measuring the subject to camera distance, ambient lighting, and pre-flash reflectivity of the subject, the ADI system intelligently calculates an effective guide number in order to control TTL metering.
When attached to a compatible camera, this flash can be used as a wireless controller to remotely trigger an off-camera flash.
The flash head is able to bounce upward to +75° in order to provide greater control over the direction and spread of the flash output.
A built-in diffuser helps to spread the light out over a wider range to better suit shooting with wide-angle lenses. Additionally, a tele setting enables a longer flash throw with a narrower beam in order to benefit working with longer, telephoto lenses.
Intuitive use is afforded through the automatic on/off function by simply raising the flash into shooting position. An easily accessible switch on the side of the flash permits quick switching between direct and bounce flash modes, and a charging lamp indicates when the flash is ready for use. The flash utilizes two AAA batteries as its power source and provides over 90 flashes when using new alkaline batteries.

The unit itself was a pleasant surprise. Gives great photos with the ceiling bounce, very pleasing to the eyes. Now let me explain how I came about this flash. I first purchased the HVL-F60M a few weeks back. I only did one "shoot" with it, which was for my newborn nephew. In 3.5 hours, trying as hard as I could I only was able to capture 73 photos with the flash (about 1 photo every 3 minutes average) because I spent the majority of the time waiting for the darn thing to not be overheated. Check this flash out - it is widely known for it's overheating. It never felt warm to me (batteries or flash) but kept displaying the error. So I returned that flash out of frustration. I decided to give the HVL-F43M a try, as it still had sufficient power for anything I needed photo wise. I was also interested in getting it to work as an off camera flash. Well this ended up pretty much being a no brainer! 2 Flashes for the same price of the overheating piece of junk I had previously. Now I came home, popped in fresh batteries and gave it the best stress test I could do. In 35 minutes, I snapped 362 photos with the HVL-F20M on the camera, and the HVL-F43M sitting elsewhere in the room. FINALLY after my finger was getting sore did the HVL-F43M give me the overheated warning (HVL-F20M still seemed to want to keep trucking). Batteries still seem to be sufficient in both flashes after letting sit to cool, so that is another plus. Let's see - 1 photo every 3 minutes, or about 10 photos a minute? I will take this super combo, thank you!One final note - as I was really mainly stress testing HVL-F43M, the only "ready" light I paid attention to was the HVL-F43M. Quite often I never let the HVL-F20M CHG light light up (meaning I was firing it at reduced strength) and EVERY time it was still strong enough to set off my HVL-F43M.

Bought the F20M specifically to use with my NEX-6, as an older 3rd party ISO-style flash does not trigger at all.
I've been shooting in manual mode, using the camera's TTL with the flash to do action and portraiture in a variety of rooms, the largest of which is roughly 24'x24' (garage-sized), and using both the stock 16-50 as well as a SEL18200 and the 16mm pancake. I've experimented with both bounce and direct as well as with and without the diffuser, which seem to be the only options selectable.
Some shots have come out beautifully. Others, not so much.
The main beef I have with the flash is that switching the flash on/off is done by rotating the flash. You would think that rotating the flash about the joint is what you'd do in order to get variable bounce angle. Au contraire. You have exactly 2 designed options: one is to flash direct, with the usual issues to do with hot spots and harsh shadows behind your subject, especially with such a small flash.
The second is to bounce directly above you. That's right -- if you shoot horizontal and are in a regular rectangular room, the bounce goes straight up. As near as I can tell, the bounce/direct slider is designed with detentes which make the flash unit rotate and tend to snap into either straight up or straight forward. If you want an angle, you're out of luck -- you need to add on a reflector of some sort. I experimented with doing a funny half-angle, but this was not very reliable and, worse, would make the flash intersect half the diffuser.
Under 10-12 feet from the subject, bounce mode gave me great pictures -- well-lit, good temperature, etc. Over that, I'd have to rely on direct, even if I tried bounce with the flash power cranked up to 2.0 on the NEX-6.
Apart from this limitation, though, the flash is what one of the other reviewers claimed -- quite a good trooper, getting through many shots on a pair of charged NiMH AA's.
I'll have to try experimenting with grafted-on diffusers and reflectors next and see if I can pull any better performance out.

Comments about Sony HVL-F20M External Flash:

The most irritatiing thing with most new Pro Cameras today is that they don't have a popup flash. I personally think it's one of the biggest mistakes with companies like Canon and Sony. I purchased this flash to make up for the missing popup flash on my new Sony A7. Pros:Provides great lighting.I like the bounce and direct feature. This however is the best small flash available for the A7 and A7s.

Comments about Sony HVL-F20M External Flash:

While I loved my pop-up flash on the A700 to trigger off-camera "real" flashes, it was the biggest sacrifice when I went to the A99. I have three Sony off-camera (well, could be used on-camera) flashes through their generations, and they are perfect with umbrellas and diffusers for studio flashes. Now I have the ability to fire them. And, in a pinch, the different orientations and diffusion options on the F20M allow for quick, creative flash in-a-pinch.

I basically bought this unit to facilitate the remote flash capability of my Sony DSC-RX10. It is a handy little flash, but perhaps not as sturdily constructed as I would like. It has a little "dial" on one side marked "tele" that by turning it onto the "tele" setting is intended to adjust the flash profile to improve shots of things that are a bit beyond the range of the standard setting.Frankly the difference it appeared to make was, to me, pretty marginal. But that is not the worst part! The little dial broke after only a few uses and now just spins uselessly...way too fragile or perhaps faulty from the outset?Disappointing, but bearing in mind my over-riding purpose for buying it in the first place, it still performs that function well.

I don't use flash often, but this is a great match for the RX10. Seems to work fine.

Picked this up as a wireless trigger for my other flash units - so far it is effective. I was hoping it would lay flatter against the camera when in the off position but it's certainly workable as is.

Works well with Sony RX100ii, including TTL and bounce features. I wish I could find a compatible cord to use the flash off-camera. So far, it seems none exists. Currently I use this mainly as bounce flash and trigger for cheap optical off-camera flash. Would give it five starts if Sony or someone else made an extension cord for it.

I use it on my A7r and find that it is great for those snapshot type pics. It has a few nice functions like bounce and telephoto, but the best thing is that it is so compact. Only negative I can see is that it is too expensive for what you are getting. Should be $[$]tops.

Comments about Sony HVL-F20M External Flash:

I bought this flash because I have the Sony 18-200 lens with a NEX-6 and the lens is so big that the flash incorporated with the camera makes a shadow.
I only use it for personal photograph.
So after some time with this flash I can say that has exceptional power, the height is ideal for any lens. No way can you make a shadow even with full zoom.
It has two modes, direct and bounce. And it also has a removable filter.
Only two thing I'm not totally satisfied:
1- It uses two AAA batteries. The flash I had with the NEX-5 used the battery from the camera so I didn't have to carry any additional chargers.
2- Size is pretty big compared with the flash I used in the NEX-5.

Despite Sony[s website saying that it is compatible with Alpha58, there needs to be an adapter , not included, which adds odd dimensions to flash and costs as much as 30% of the cost of the flash.

Cool little pocket flash for the RX10. No on/off switch, that had me confused a little. Just raise it upright in the hot-shoe and you're ready to shoot. It's ideal for close-up images, especially with the nifty bounce feature off a piece of card. It'd make a nice little fill-flash for portraits set at minus -3 stops in the RX10's flash menu.

Comments about Sony HVL-F20M External Flash:

Other reviewers gave plenty of warning that this is a flash with very limited capabilities and I won't claim to be surprised that its low output imposes considerable limitations.

I bought it for the small size and light weight benefits with the intention of improving the lighting when taking (very amateur) portraits. To that end it is more or less adequate although the control over the bounce angle is poorer than expected. One almost needs to also carry a reflector, which would completely negate any size benefits. If one has a patient subject and multiple shots are possible, a satisfactory result can be obtained. The cycle time for the flash is pretty good.

This unit is very particular about battery condition and I had to change batteries when the current pair still measured 1.32 volts.

Not unique to this flash, the Multi Interface shoe is a pain in the backside because it is necessary to remove contact covers from both the flash and the camera when installing the flash.

I'd intended for this flash to see limited use but am disppointed that it has even greater limitations than I'd expected. In fairness to the equipment, better results may be achieved if I put a lot more time and effort into learning to work around its power and bounce limitations.

Top marks to B&H for excellent customer service in this transaction.
