Comments about HighPoint RocketU 1144CM PCIe 2.0 x4 USB 3.0 Host Bus Adapter:

This card works perfectly. I have a mid 2010 (12 core) mac pro. You simply install the card and the correct driver from the enclosed CD and it works exactly as you would expect. You can plug and unplug USB-3 drives and see them on the desk top without having to restart. It seems to work well with a variety of different external drives. The card has extended the life of my hardware by adding uber fast USB-3 to my mac pro. I'm not using firewire 800 at all now as it seems so slow by comparison. Well worth the investment.

I have had very similar situations to the "KM" review of this product. After much headache and wasted time (months) attemptimg to deal with the highpoint "custom service". I gave up and removed it from my MacPro. Save your self some time and money and by another brand!

Specs - Early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1, dual 2.26 GHz Quad Core with Apple Raid Card, stock GeForce GT 120 video card, 32 GB ram, running Mavericks.Very hesitant to buy based on reviews I'd seen out there. Emailed Highpoint and they assured me it would work with OS 10.9. Installed card in slot 3(which was a little tight b/c of RAID card) and system recognized asap upon start up. Installed drivers, rebooted, checked drivers were installed, connected WD USB 3.0 2 TB drive and restarted. Drive came up right away and a Time Machine Backup was run immediately which took about 2 hrs as opposed to the 9+ hrs it took me on my WD FW 800 2 TB drive. Vroom. Couldn't be happier.

I should have written this before but I was hoping to get this card to work better:

The RocketU 1144 does not support card readers!

I have a MacPro5,1 and I edit video. I bought this card so I could more quickly download my SD cards, and use USB 3 HDs for video editing. With the RocketU you can only use USB 3 drives for storage, I don't know why, but you can't play and record video from a single, or multiple drives using this card; the video locks up. Having said that, data transfer is faster than using the USB 2 ports.

I have three USB 3 external drives; one the RocketU seems to like, one un-mounts & re-mounts every hour or so, and the third will not mount when plugged into the RocketU.

The RocketU 1144 destabilizes my computer; my projects in Adobe Premiere have some strange artifacts and problems which come and go. Since installing this card my computer crashes several times a week, for no apparent reason. I just tried to boot the computer using the Mac OS start up disk; the computer wouldn't start & I wound up having to remove the RocketU before I could extract the Mac OS DVD!

The Highpoint technical service website has a passive-aggressive, immature quality, which is made worse by a lack of english...
