The DT 770 Pro Studio Headphones are comfortable closed-back headphones for professionals who require a full bass sound as well as clinically accurate high and mid-range reproduction, and is an indispensable tool for audio and video professionals.
By design, headphones eliminate the acoustic interaction with a room that can affect the recording and monitoring of audio signals. The DT 770 Pro provides an excellent reference environment, the standard against which open-air room listening is judged.

I have owned the 80ohm version for over 3 years now and I love these headphones. They aren't the best in any single category but overall and for their price I just havent found any better for certain applications.
Pros:
They are extremely comfortable. They are a little heavy but so well padded I can wear them for 6 to 8 hours without discomfort even with glasses on. They can get a little warm, but much less than cans with pleather pads.
They are built like a tank. From the cable to the cups to the headband everything is solid. The combination of price and durability make me feel like I can really use them without having to baby them. The pads do flatten and get dirty after extended use (400 to 500hrs the first time, less and less each successive time). However, they are easy enough to remove and wash by hand. I only just recently felt compelled to replace the pads but am confident I put 1000+hrs on them).
They isolate extremely well both ways. I used them mostly for monitoring while laying guitar tracks with great results.
I also like the single sided cable. It is very easy to coil and has always remained nice and straight. Obviously coil it properly like any audio cable. Youtube it if you don't know how.
They also have a surprisingly nice soundstage for a closed headphone. Don't expect the width or depth of a nicer open can, but nevertheless compared to most of the common closed headphones I've tried (Sony V6/7506, AT M50, HD280, etc) they are really good.
One potential con:
The product description and many reviews here call it a reference headphone or say it is nuetral or accurate. These are relative terms, but I would say the dt770s are NOT an ideal reference headphone. There is significant bass emphasis and the mids are noticeably recessed. I think they are perfectly adiquate for monitoring while laying down tracks, but I wouldn't trust it for mixing. These are better in every other way, but a more nuetral and accurate headphone similarly priced is the Senn HD280 (also isolates better too, but way less comfortable). Also because of this, I wouldn't recommend it for lovers of classical music. However, for heavy rock and hip hop they are superb. I also love them for movies and I imagine they would be great for gaming.
Obviously, if you are moving up the sound quality chain (ie form apple earbuds) you will absolutely love these. If you are moving down (ie high end Beyers, Senns, Grados etc) you may be dissapointed. Personally I use Senn HD650s for most music enjoyment but still bust out the 770s for some bass heavy tracks. Now they have been mostly retired to late night movie viewing and I just don't know of a better can for this application (comfort + great bass + great soundstage = winning formula).
I obviously can't speak to the amping needs for the 250 from experience, but don't be surprised if it sounds muddy, dull, or generally quiet without adequate power (I just tried mine out of an ipod for the first time and it's no good). I expect your HT reviever should do just fine for movies, otherwise expect to look into dedicated headphone amps.

Cons:

Using these for my home studio. Flattest response I've heard at this pricepoint. Having used these in different recording studios over the years (or versions of these), its really great to now have these in the studio as a nice A/B for my monitors, or for the times when the kids are asleep but I need to do some tracking or mixing. Really comfortable, even for long sessions (4-6 hours). I bought a small headphone amp for these but ended up not needing them as my mixing board provides enough power to drive them - and the board sounded better than the headphone amp. I only mention that to say if you plan to use these with a powered mixing board, wait to see their performance before you buy a headphone amp.

It took me a couple of days to transition from some cheap headphones to DT 770 Pro, after that you just get adjusted to them and the sound really becomes so clear and the bass is deep. I do a lot of mixing / virtual instruments production, this is definitely the best pair I have ever owned.

I love these headphones - they are the most comfortable I've tried so they're easy to wear for long periods. They are very accurate for mixing as well. But they do wear-out. The low-end woofer has blown on me before. But I liked them enough to just buy another pair. I've had friends complain that they are too quiet when being used with an ipod or similar device. I use them in a recording studio with no volume limitations really, so I can't comment on that.

As a recording artsit and producer, headphones are imperative. And these headphones are terrific. They never will hurt you even after wearing them for 5 hours at a time. (done that...) I'd give 6/5 stars if I could. I'd pay $300 or $400 for these any day!

I record 2 to 3 concerts per week so I spend a lot of time with these headphones on my head. With that much time buried in headphones, comfort is a big deal to me. Besides that, they are incredibly accurate and don't color the sound at all. The low frequency response is tight yet not embelished. The velvet rim collects your personal "smell" so I don't recommend these headphones if you're going to share them with others (unless your into sharing toothbrushes and underwear and such.)

I'm a video editor and I spend hours wearing headphones. I'm definitely not an audio expert, but these headphones are a great upgrade. I've used over-ear headphones in the same price range and these are more fun to listen to. They are super comfortable. The closed back is nice for privacy. The cloth cups are really nice for prolonged use as opposed to pleather ones that can stick to your skin. However at 250 ohms and the fact that I edit on a macbook pro I don't get that full dynamic range with out an amp. Solid, flat sound with a nice little kick of bass.

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Studio Headphones:
Since I recently moved into an apartment complex, I was looking for a set of headphones that I could use to record and mix hiphop with since my monitors are a little too loud to use at night. After consulting an engineer at a nearby pro audio store, I picked up the DT-770's (he recommended the 250-ohm version since I have a headphone amp). I am VERY happy with the choice.
The fit and feel are great. I have big ears and wear glasses so most cans hurt my ears after long periods of wear. Not the 770s; these cans are very comfortable. The soft fabric on the pads also help me avoid getting my ears sweaty.
The sound is great for my project studio. Since hiphop is so bass-heavy, it's hard to find a well-balanced set of cans to mix with. These are great because they articulate lower frequencies without washing out the mids and highs. The result: a well-balanced mix that sounds great on cheap earbuds or high-end car audio systems (something I couldn't get when mixing with my trusty 7506's).
The thing that I don't like about these is that the build quality, albeit good, feels like it wouldn't survive too much abuse. While the frame is metal, the covers on the outside of the drivers are plastic (probably to save on weight). The hinges appear to be plastic also so I'm a little worried about bending them back too quickly. In other words, I wouldn't use these if I was a DJ. Also, they don't fold away.
I would definitely recommend these for someone looking for good cans to use in a project studio without spending too much (BUT only if they have a headphone amp). DJs and audiophiles might not like these (for different reasons though).

I have used many types of headphones working in different studios. I wanted a pair of headphones for my own personal use at home and work.
I chose these ones, cos they arent breaking the bank and deliver a good quality sound and are very comfortable and durable. The headphones in studios that looked the best and didnt crackle or have cables hanging off them were these.
Im not an audio engineer, but an editor. So I can only give my personal opinion, and that is you cant go wrong. Of course you can always get better of anything, but for $ and value. I recommend these.
Just be aware to get the best results, you'll need an amp for these.

These heaphones are amazing! They produce great sound in all areas low mid and highs. I would recommend these to anyone. Origanally i was looking to buy Beats but then i noticed a lot more on the market that were better, way better. I bought these with a fiio F5 amp that makes these sound great with iPod touch 2nd gen. The only thing about these that i dont like is the material around the ear. It's very comfortable but pretty warm. If you were to wear these in the summer sun you would be sweating. Other than that i would reccomend these big time! (make sure to buy an amp with these if planning to use with portable devices they're cheap and extremely effective.)

I use these phones for location recording of classical music. They are much more comfortable than phones I've used previously (Sony 7506, SV6) and provide pretty good isolation.
I would describe their sound as accurate and neutral, not nearly so forward as the Sonys.
