I have been using these headphones for the past 2 months. Here are my observations about DT 990 Pro.
      Design:
DT 990 Pro are Rock-solid. I mean that literally. The headband is of actual steel. But yet comfortable enough to be worn whole day long without you realizing wearing it.
The wire is flexible and long enough - a bit heavy if you are used to the light wire of street-style headphones.

      Music quality:
I have put these to the test of the heavy bass music, heavy metal, electronic, psychedelic, lounge and what not. I have not once been disappointed with the sound quality. Whatever you put in, you get exactly that out.
Just for the record, I used 48 continuous hours of Indian Classical music (which covers whole of the sound spectrum audible to human ears) along with Punjabi Bhangra music to achieve the break-in.

      Usage:
I have used these headphones so far with my MacBook Pro, iPod and TV. But I am sure these are very well suited for any amplifier you are about to use.
Just lower the sound volume initially to prevent accidental damage to your ears :)

      Summary:
      Extremely satisfied. Highly recommended.

Way too much bass and treble. High value

I use it to listen to all sorts of music; but mostly pop, rock and different kinds of regional music from around the world. I also own the Sennheiser HD600.

DT990 is an amazing deal, but the sounds is very biased in high and low frequencies. So if you have decent equipment, the sound will be harsh (too much treble) and bassy. Even though I prefer bassy phones, this was way too much.

I had to return and keep using my 10 year old Senns. I recommend to spend a little more to get a more balanced set of headphones.

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Studio Headphones:

I read many reviews about sibilant highs and boomy lows, and I've got to say that I don't agree at all. These headphones are definitely V-shaped, but very balanced (not neutral) and no particular frequencies are over-exaggerated (at least for me), and they have great bass for open headphones (I do miss the sub-bass of my hd380s, but I don't expect that in open headphones and the sound quality more then makes up for it). Make sure you try these before you buy them, they do have a lot of treble and if you are sensitive to treble these are not for you.

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Studio Headphones:

All the reviews i've read about DT990 Pro are true EXCEPT being boomy/bassy and harsh treble - for me at least. Of course, frequency perception varies from one person to another and headphones are, at the minimum, just as good as the source. For the build quality, sound performance, comfort and price, i'm giving this 5-star rating. I wish the cable is removable, but that's never been a deal-breaker for me. I can't speak of its durability yet, only time will tell.

My first open-back and they've been great. I use them at home so I don't care that they leak out sound. I especially love the earpads. The treble is a bit much but wasn't a deal breaker after the break in period.

after hearing my DT 990 Pro, many of my friends ordered it immediately.

I directly plug it into iPhone 5. believe me no need of any external headphone amp. It sounds surprisingly good. In fact I'd say it is best sounding headphone i tested < $1,000 with iPhone

Also it works even better with my Denon receiver's headphone jack.

It is very comfortable wearing headphone (I wear it as earmuffs during winter). It is open ended, The sound stage is much expanded and music is transparent. I wish it is folder-able and has detachable cable. so I can carry it with me all the time.

I purchased these headphones after reading a number of reviews, to use in my recording studio. Let me say that these are the best sounding headphones I have ever heard. Full low end and crisp highs, without being over-hyped anywhere in the frequency range. And comfortable too, I can wear them for hours with no soreness or fatigue. Highly recommended!

This headphone is excellent choice for just about everything: movies, gaming, studio monitoring.
It offers excellent natural soundstage, clarity, resolution, dynamic.
It does require proper amping to sound its best and requires longer hours burnin than average headphone - min 150 before you begin serious listening as its SQ will improve during those time.
Clamping force is very tight, i had to carefully flex/bend the metal headband to expand the natural distance btw earcups. Only apply force to the headband, do not apply force from the cups.
Also take extra care to the thin exposed cable connecting the cups.
minimal comfort issue after clamping force corrected and velour pads settled in and become softer. 8.5/10. even for a glass wearer in prolonged session.

I listen to Electronic Dance Music, and this genre definitely lets these babies shine! The bass is clean, tight, mids are a little laid back, but they are definetely there and to be hard, and then theres the highs, some people say they are too bright or screaming - i dont think so, they fit my music perfectly!
I have burned them in for around 100 hours plus 20-30 listening hours on them, and i dont know if it was placebo, but they did sound a bit cleaner and tighter to me! I would recommend anyone buying these headphones to either purchase an amp or an amp/dac, your music will shine like never before!
This is not a con - they ARE open back cans, which means they are not very usefull for on the go or in enviroments where you need to be quiet, because sounds goes in and sound goes out. Great headphone for a small studio og just someone wanting to enjoy their music at home!

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Studio Headphones:

These headphones are the top of their field. The sound they reproduce is clean, controlled, but at the same time, it is fun and exciting. The Beyerdynamic DT990's know how to deliver sound that has a deep bass impact, with sharp, clean treble. That wasn't to suggest that the sound is colored with any sort of artificial enhancement. I'd also be crazy not to mention the immense soundstage you feel listening to these. The open design truly gives these an airy feel. The headphones are built with a tough, durable plastic that is extremely lightweight. There is some nice texturing throughout the body, and is offset nicely by some polished areas. The velour earcups are simply exceptional, allowing these headphones to exert the maximum amount of sound quality. Another nice touch by Beyerdynamic is the ability to replace the earcups and leather headband, in the event they wear out. This is a product that is built to last, with the parts availible to repair it if nessecary.

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Studio Headphones:

About 45 years ago, I bought the Beyer DT-48S headphones. They were the best headphones I could find until a few years later when some electrostatic headphones appeared. But the Beyer headphones did not require extra electronics between the amplifier and the headphones. The electrostatics headphones where certainly NOT portable, and they were difficult to drive for my amplifier. (I once blew a fuse on a highly rated power amp.)In recent years, I suppose the DT-990 PRO headphones are better than my hearing. :-) I no longer have a big sound system, so I was looking for a good way to listen to the records stored on my computer with a minimal financial investment. I bought the 250 ohm model because of the low price and because I was pretty sure that Beyer headphones were still very efficient. I was not disappointed.I do not have access to others headphones for comparison, like AKG and Sennheiser. However, I do have a friend who bought DR DRE BEATS for his kids. (I decided to name my headphones MR CRE EATS because my middle name is Ray and I love to eat Blue Bell ice cream. :-) Getting back to the review, I like the Beyer sound better than the DRE sound, although I must admit the comparison was very limited in time and variety. But the Beyer headphones are over 40% less expensive, plus I did not have to pay sales tax. Also, the Beyer headphones do NOT require batteries to operate! The output of my computer is more than adequate; I have no plans to buy a headphone amplifier. It was good to hear great headphones again; I can't think of a cheaper way to enjoy music in the absence of a big, expensive system. Also, the Beyer headphones are well built, and they are MADE IN GERMANY. Sometimes I just like to sit and read the label because it does NOT say "Made in China" in several languages! :-)In conclusion, I can't imagine better headphones for the price. Maybe someday when I retire I will count the number of different headphone brands listed on Amazon. There were only a dozen or so when I bought the DT-48S; now there must be 100's of brands. I decided to stick with an old company and I am glad I did. Beyer introduced the DT-48 10 years before I was born, and that's a l-o-n-g time ago.The delivery from B&H was excellent and fast. Once or twice I had a faster delivery from [*], but that was an exception.

DT 990 features remarkable ratio between quality and price. The open-back characteristic, together with the absence of saturation and lack of resonant points over the spectrum, gives you the precious feel of being not in front of, but in the middle of an orchestra. Highly recommended.

Best headphones I have ever used. My previous pair had terrible stereo placement and I could barely tell where in the mix certain elements are. With these, I was blown away at how mono my mixes sounded. Now everything is wide and beautiful.

Bought these headphones last week and i must say this is a really sweet sounding headphone with good bass. These might not be the most detailed and transparent headphones i have heard or may not have the best mid range(which is a bit reserved) but apart from that every thing else is excellent. If you want an out of a box very good sounding headphone which are not over analytical and fairly easy to drive these must the right headphones for you. These headphones suit Rock, Electronic music really well. The build quality is great and rugged, personally i don't believe in the different ohm version can sound different with respect to this model so i went for the pro version which is the cheapest and i was not disappointed one bit.Another amazing thing about this headphone is that they don't really need good amplification or source to sound good cause they work well any amplifier and source, but i am sure they might sound even better with an amplifier which has the right synergy for this.Over all i would say if some one is looking for a headphone and not planning on spending a great deal on cables or amplification must seriously consider this.
