I am a music and film producer. I use Apple's Logic and Propellerhead Reason for audio on a quad-core Imac. I have an older motu 828 fire wire audio interface. I needed to have two monitors connected to my Imac as well as the audio interface. There are only two thunderbolt ports on my Imac, which only allowed for one additional monitor and the audio interface via a thunderbolt to firewire connector. The Thunderbolt Express has a firewire port which freed up using the Imac thunderbolt port for my 828 mkii audio device. There are two thunderbolt ports on the belkin one of them has to be connected to your computer the other for and additional thunderbolt device or mini display. The Belkin also added three aditional usb ports which really came in handy for other gear like my usb 88 key music keyboard and other devices like cd drive and midi interface. I am really happy with the device my only concern is the heat of the device.

We had to order a second unit as the first died, but B&H was very helpful getting it replaced. The format is nice and the lines are clean. It works well for low-bandwidth applications, but the USB 3.0 ports are not nearly as well performing as the ones on the Mac itself. I averaged 170Mb/s writes on the Mac and 34Mb/s on the Belkin. It's not as useful for large file transfers as I would like and it is definitely not something to use for external drives that will see a lot of data transfers.

Comments about Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock:

I have heard the expression "blazing fast" in connection with drives before, but this is the first time I noticed it. This dock allowed me to use USB 3 drives with my iMac (which has no native USP 3 ports). For the first time, I can use 3 with the same drives that I had previously accessed with FW800 only. What a difference.

Comments about Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock:

I purchased the Thunderbolt Express as part of a portable (plugged in not field recording) capture and editing package. The initial tests of both capturing video from the Blackmagic Ultrastudio Express and editing in Final Cut X seemed fine. However, when I went to capture/record the video from an event I document, the external drive kept unmounting randomly. I was busy with juggling mics, multitrack audio and live sound for the event and was capturing the video to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera's internal cards anyway, so didn't have time to mess much with it. I also used it hooked up in an audio only environment with my older MOTU 828mkII via FireWire and it had similar problems with the disk and the interface unmounting/not being recognized (after working fine for a while.)I have been on several calls and emails with Belkin's support and it's still unresolved. The support staff are nice and keep contacting me, but seem to have no clue that the FireWire port might be used for what FireWire ports are often used for, especially by B&H customers: that being streaming high bandwidth data from video and audio sources!?!? They keep asking me if my 2014 MacBook Pro (which I bought with the Thunderbolt express) has a FireWire port on the Mac?!?!!?? I'm a little doubtful of the support there.I wish I'd found this out in the return period. I went and bought the apple FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter and everything works great. So it's not the drive, the computer, etc.

Does everything it says it does. Firewire seems to run a bit slower than I expected.

My only real complaint: the design LOOKS nice. But it is sort of impractical. It's curved on the surface, so hard to stack things on top of it. Also it is only designed to be used as pictured. Not easy to put on it's side.

Also the power outlet/ thunderbolt to computer plug are both on the front side, which is annoying. The ports that you can't actually plug things into should be on the back, with the ports that you can plug things into on the front.

This dock is fantastic. I can plug a ton of peripherals into it, and connect them all to my Retina MacBook Pro with a single cable. My one complaint is that despite the fact that its UBS ports are powered you cannot use it with an Apple SuperDrive (which runs off bus power) with the dock; you must plug SuperDrives directly into your Mac. Otherwise, a fantastic product. Well worth the money, especially if you like to keep your desk neat and free of clutter as I do.

That is only used to connect petty and unimportant things. If you copy data to multiple disks connected to this device lento.Yo all gets connected it to a 2011 iMac Core i7 and 32GB of RAM.

Belkin Thunderbolt Hub is critical to making a seamless Mac workspace. Not only does it provide a quick and easy way to shutdown my workstation, it also looks like my other Mac peripherals. The "but" is for one or two more USB inputs. The Belkin Thunderbolt Hub quickly filled up with USB add ons. Overall, a great addition and only B&H had the lowest price and quickest delivery.

Wanted to consolidate a handful of various drives and connections into a single one to take to my Thunderbolt Display. This dock did the trick. I paired it with one of the new 5.5m optical thunderbolt cables and now all my drives, raid arrays and misc. items are hidden nicely in a cabinet. I have gotten everything but the FireWire port to work (haven't researched further as to why it won't). Would for sure recommend this product.

The power output from Apples Thunderbolt ports can be less then sufficient for some peripherals. This dock was purchased to aid in connecting my 15 MacBook Pro Retina with a medium format digital back. Originally paired with just a firewire 800 cord and thunderbolt adapter the digital back was not getting sufficient power to support full functionality. Once the Belkin Express dock was added the camera system worked perfectly. I was a little surprised at how big it was. The picture gave me the impression that it was a lot smaller. Overall I am very impressed with this product.

Comments about Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock:

My iMac is model identifier 12,2 aka 27" mid-2011. This is from a narrow window of time where Apple wanted to push Thunderbolt as the premier high-speed interface so badly that they sold intentionally crippled machines. These machines only have USB 2.0, and the ports are part of the motherboard, so they're not upgradable. I bought a bunch of 3TB and 4TB drives at a wholesale membership store that will not be named, and found out that they will only run at about a tenth of their speed for me.

Since USB and Thunderbolt are such different protocols, there will never be an adapter cable. The switching is complicated enough that by the time you've got a piece of equipment complicated enough to do it you're at the price of a major dock anyway.

There are lots of docks out there for MacBooks, but they look stupid being used as a hub for an iMac. This one (which I think of as more hub than dock) is pretty, streamlined, and matches the Apple aesthetics. Now I can use my USB 3.0 devices at near-full speed, and this thing is pretty, too. What's not to like?

Well what's not to like is that it doesn't come with a cable. What gives, Belkin? Literally every purchaser will need one. I've never heard of a USB hub that didn't come with a USB cable. B&H offer their own kit with a third-party cable, and I should have taken them up on the offer. Instead I bought the short (1.6-foot) cable from Apple, thinking that it would look tidier. It was a mistake. 1.6 feet is too short to be useful. I'm constantly worried that I'm going to accidentally unplug this hub from its cable every time I pull it towards me to see the back so I can plug/unplug something else to/from it.

Comments about Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock:

This Thunderbolt Dock really works great with MacBook Pro laptops in clamshell mode. It allows a user to easily dock their laptop with only two cables, thunderbolt and their normal magsafe power adapter. The laptop display lid can be closed during operation. All other cables attach to the dock rather than the laptop. We are equiping all our Guidance staff with these so they can use a 24" LED display, usb keyboard/mouse and connect to internet via an ethernet connection while at work. All of these connections are carried through the single thunderbolt cable to and from the laptop. When they go home for the day they simply unplug two cables and hit the road.

Nice format, not for high bandwidth apps

Comments about Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock:

We had to order a second unit as the first died, but B&H was very helpful getting it replaced. The format is nice and the lines are clean. It works well for low-bandwidth applications, but the USB 3.0 ports are not nearly as well performing as the ones on the Mac itself. I averaged 170Mb/s writes on the Mac and 34Mb/s on the Belkin. It's not as useful for large file transfers as I would like and it is definitely not something to use for external drives that will see a lot of data transfers.
