Comments about Brenthaven Collins Convertible Backpack (Charcoal):

I initially found the Collins Convertible Backpack (CCB) as I was searching for a bag to carry both a 15" laptop and and a tablet. Most airlines these days (mid 2013) allow a carry-on plus a "computer". Well no one carries their computer without at least a sleeve, so I was looking for a bag that I could dedicate as my computing bag for travel and possibly an everyday bag for work and days in the city. I think the CCB will meet those needs.

I was intrigued by this bag with its convertible option and after two weeks of use can't say if I'll use it more as a backpack or bag. I really like being able to stow the left shoulder backpack strap into the back pocket/sleeve. This makes the bag feel more compact without a seldom used strap flapping around all of the time. Being able to stow the bag strap/handles is nice too, but I find I leave those out so I can quickly grab the bag and go.

    Great about the bag:
It stands on its own! Whether it's fully loaded or not the CCB stands on its own when you place it on the floor. Maybe this is no surprise to you, but after years with a messenger bag flopping and falling all over the place, this was a nice surprise for me. Also nice - no great - was moving on from the messenger bag's huge, always in the way, front flap. The CCB's pockets and inner sleeves/compartments are easy to access through high quality zippers and velcro fasteners.

Also great: overall construction, sleeves for laptop and tablet, lifetime guarantee. The main compartment - after loading my laptop and tablet, I looked in the main compartment and found I easily had room for a DSLR with strap and stock zoom lens as well. But if not a camera, plenty of room for other stuff - like the power cord/brick for laptop. One drawback may be that this big main compartment is tall and deep. So once fully loaded, it would be a drag trying to get to that item you need way down on the bottom of the bag.

Just good: high density foam interior cradle - still decent though, just comparing this to other Brenthaven products I've used.

Not so great: interior accessory panel. There are three small sleeves between pen/pencil holders that I will call useless. They are so shallow I think even business cards would easily fall out and become lost. I was hoping for a place to store SD cards, but no way, not here. I would have liked to see a small zippered compartment in this space - to secure SD cards. And overall, I think the CCB is a little short on useful accessory panels and sleeves/compartments. There is a single gadget holder in the front compartment (probably for iThing feeding headphones). But I would have liked to see more than just one compartment - another, but more useful, panel and also at least one interior zippered sleeve somewhere would have been nice.

One last thing for the CCB v2 wish list is a strong leash with clip for keys. I'll probably be snipping it out of my messenger bag and stitching it somewhere into my CCB on my own.

Comments about Brenthaven Collins Convertible Backpack (Charcoal):

I use this product everyday and what I like the most about this product is that it has the perfect amount of space without being bulky or overly large as most backpacks.

I use it to carry my iPad, books, headphones and more.

My only complaint (very small) is that it uses these little velcro patches to seal the outside pockets on the side and it scratches my hand when I put things in them. May be, If Brenthaven does a redesign, they could use magnets versus velcro.
