The Polaris Digital Exposure Meter is a compact flash and ambient light meter that has many features of the more expensive flash meters. A unique multi-flash feature makes it simple to calculate how many times the flash must be fired to achieve a desired f-stop. Buying this light meter has resurrected my old Nikon AI-S lenses for use with the Nikon D-90 which does not offer metering capability with these non-CPU mechanical lenses. I use the meter mainly for ambient light photography and the meter is very accurate and easy to use from the outset. Using 2AA battery also helps because of its availability and low cost.
I was initially looking at the more expensive meters like the Sekonic and Gossen, but the good reviews guided me towards the Polaris. So far I have nothing negative to say about this product, and I will recommend this in a heartbeat. For the price it can't be beat. It's also made in Japan.

So far I have been happy with the purchase of this light meter. I have just jumped into the portrait world and after spending way too much money on a light set up (that I love), I purchased this meter. It's been easy to use and fairly strait forward. It doesn't have a remote trigger, you have to wire-sync with or have it wait for a flash to get the reading. I use the wait for flash function and it works. This is basically me pushing the trigger on the meter, then taking a test picture using the camera to trip the flash units. It was fairly inexpensive compared to the other units and I think this is mostly due to the lack of a remote trigger. I only gave it 3 stars because the build quality seems a little flimsy. It's vary light and mostly plastic and a little bulky. I'm not a big fan of sliding the dome to use the reflective metering, but I don't plan on using it much for these measurements so I'm okay with it. Overall, I'm happy with what I got for the price!

This is a "good enough" meter. Not too many bells and whistles, but it will get the job done at a good price for a photographer who doesn't need much fancy functionality beyond giving a good incident reading.

Like others have mentioned it does feel very light almost fragile. But I like the easiness/simple way of using the meter. I've tested it over and over to make sure the reading numbers were consistent each time and they are. I would recommend this meter to a up and coming photographer.

Comments about Shepherd/Polaris Polaris Digital Meter:

This meter replaces a much older model that I lovingly referred to as "old faithful". As a field portrait and wedding photographer, my equipment can take a beating from time to time. It also has been know, on rare occasion, to go MIA. I decided to keep that in mind with this purchase.

Its simple. Light-weight. Not the most 'solidly-constructed', but I knew that going in, and made the educated decision to put price over bells-n-whistles and whether or not it could take an impact from 100ft. I entrusted performance and accuracy to the extensive reviews from various sources, including BH... And it has paid-off.

I've used the meter for ambient conditions, as well as strobes, and I find it to be accurate, without exposure compensation, but it does offer that feature, which may come in handy.

I give it 5 stars, based on performance and value for price.

It´s my first lightmeter. When you touch it, it feels a little cheap plastic, and with a little cheap bag. It is veary light in weight, so it is a little baffing, you could thing if it´s real or it is a toy, but it works very fine. I would like more explicit instructions, some things are not good enought explained, but also, it have just a few functions. It does the job, the lowest priced light meter you can find, and it works at it should do.

Easy to use, well and smart design.

Is a good price for this device, acurately, simple and useful.

It feels a little like a cheap plastic in my hand, but solid, also.

Great for my practice at flash photography.Has a PC sync port which I hook to a cowboystudio remote to fire my flashes at the press of a button. It even has a reading adjustment in case your camera sees the light a little differently. I'm glad that I bought this cost-effective meter.

Nice cheap meter, takes the guess work out of lighting. Some of the settings are a little awkward so only 4 stars.
