The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Nikon is a versatile telephoto zoom lens that is compatible with both FX and DX-sized image sensors. This lens features an extensive zoom range of 80-400mm, with the DX-format equivalent of 120-600mm, encompassing both portrait and long-reaching telephoto focal lengths to suit working with a variety of subjects. Capture portraits with softly blurred backgrounds and get close-up telephoto shots of faraway subjects with or without a tripod.

The lens construction integrates one super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and four ED glass elements to help minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and contribute to higher image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity. The Nano Crystal Coat reduces surface reflections, helping to prevent lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and enhanced light transmission.

Built-in Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake up to the equivalent of four shutter speed steps. A dedicated VR setting for tripods is available for producing the sharpest imagery possible without countering the effects of the image stabilization system.

In addition to regular autofocus and manual focus, two other focusing modes are available: A/M (Auto-Priority Manual Mode) enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation, while M/A (autofocus with manual override, MF priority) allows switching from AF to MF with no lag time by just turning the focusing ring. Transitioning between these focusing modes can be done quickly and precisely.

The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) focusing system uses ultrasonic vibrations to provide quick, quiet, smooth and precise auto focusing performance that is ideal for use in video and subject-tracking. Internal focusing maintains an overall compact lens form-factor, enables faster performance, and allows for a closer focusing distance.

Extensive Telephoto Zoom Focal Range
Covers the broadest focal length range of any NIKKOR super-telephoto zoom lens. At 80mm, it's an ideal medium-telephoto portrait lens and at 400mm it's a powerful super-telephoto lens suited to wildlife and action photography, with or without a tripod. When used on DX-format DSLRs its 35mm focal length equivalence is 120-600mm.
ED and Super ED Glass Elements
One super Extra-low dispersion and four ED glass elements help reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and produce higher image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity.
SIC and Nano Crystal Coatings
The multilayer Super Integrated Coating is applied to the individual optical elements, as is a Nano Crystal Coat to minimize surface reflections across a wide range of wavelengths and prevent lens flare and ghosting--resulting in greater overall contrast and light transmission.
Vibration Reduction
Built-in image stabilization counteracts the effects of camera shake, allowing you to shoot at shutter speeds up to four times slower than would otherwise be possible. A dedicated VR setting for tripods gives you the sharpest imagery possible without working against the image stabilization system.
Focusing Modes
In addition to regular autofocus and manual focus, two other focusing modes are available: A/M (Auto-Priority Manual Mode) enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation, with a low possibility of unintentional switching, while M/A (autofocus with manual override, MF priority) allows switching from AF to MF with virtually no lag time by turning the focusing ring--letting you seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the camera's viewfinder. Transitioning between these focusing modes is controlled by a rocker switch on the lens barrel for quick switching and greater precision depending on the subject matter being photographed.
SWM (Silent Wave Motor)
Utilizes ultrasonic vibrations to provide quick, quiet, smooth and precise auto focusing performance that is ideal for use with video and subject-tracking applications.
Internal Focusing
Employed in order to maintain an overall compact lens form-factor and to produce faster performance. The lens will not change in size during AF operation, enabling a closer focusing distance without the danger of damaging the lens' front element. Distance information is displayed on an analog scale through a sealed window.
Focus Limiter Switch
A focus limiter switch on the lens barrel allows you to set a predetermined focus range for faster focusing. The two ranges are Full (5.7' to infinity) and Partial (19.7' to infinity).
Zoom Lock
A zoom lock switch on the lens barrel keeps the lens set on an established focal length to prevent changes when moving the lens.
Tripod Collar
A detachable, rotating tripod collar is included for stable use with a tripod or monopod.

Well, I have had the new Nikon 80-400mm for a week now and I am impressed, to say the least! Here's some of my experiences so far. The image posted here is of nestling Stellar's Jays, handheld, sitting in a chair, TC1.4, ISO 3200, 1/60sec at f8, VR set to "NORMAL" with the D800. The nest was under the eves of a porch and was dark but did have some reflected light coming in from the windows in front of it, you can see a shadow above and behind the birds. I did nothing to this image, just converted the raw in ACR with no raw presharpening and sized to fit BPN constraints. I don't know how the image stacks up to the products of higher end lenses but I do know that I would not have been able to produce it with ANY OF MY PAST EQUIPMENT!

I have used it exclusively with the TC1.4.

I can tell that it is a little heavier that the old version but not significantly for walking around with handheld (a shoulder strap is recommended though).

Although I haven't really got to use it for much BIF, I can say the the AF with the tc is way faster than the old version (which wouldn't accept a tc) and at least as fast as the Nikon 300f4+tc1.4.

I shot some really low light (in the Sierra deep forest shadows) and had no problem AF'ing. It is really nice to be able to MF while in AF mode to rough in the focus then let the AF take over.

THE VR ROCKS! Compared to the old version, this VR is amazing to me, even with the 1.4 attached. My old version's VR didn't even exist compared to this new version!!! I was able to get sharp images down to 1/60sec handheld, providing the subject didn't flinch!

I shot some small butterflies at close focus and the combo worked well but the lens does "breath" at the close focus, I have read that it losses focal length at CF and it does, but it was still nice to be able to focus on subjects under 5 feet away!

My D800 calculates the focal length with the tc1.4 as 550mm? Should be 560mm, according to my math skills? Oh Well!

I can't wait to get out and do some BIF with and without the tc.

I LOVE THIS LENS (so far)!

I have been waiting for this lens for a long time. I own the previous version, a practical lens but with many limitations. The lens is ergonomically good, although I expected the zoom to be internal rather than external like its predecessor. The focusing is very fast although a bit clunky ̶ it is noisy and it tends to search, although not as bad as its predecessor. My biggest disappointment was the resolution. For a lens of this price, I expected a crisp, sharp picture. I compared some of the shots with others taken with my 300mm F4.0 with the 1.4 teleconverter (a 420mm equivalent) and the latter left the 80-400 in the dust. Maybe I got a bad sample, but I sent the lens back.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Bought this lens for a couple of holidays. One to Morocco and one to Yosemite. Performed well in both situations. Morocco was a combitrip of bright skies and dark walks through the souks and medinas. It performed equally well in both scenarios. Walked around all day with it on a D800 with zero tripod availability. Tripod would have been better but was not disappointed with images. The trip to Yosemite had an equally good performance. I own a 200-400 as well but this lens gave me much more maneuverability. This is a heavy lens no question about it but it is a lightweight in comparison to the 2 to 4. I highly recommend moving forward if you are thinking about it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Received this lens over a week ago and have used it almost every day since then. Got it mainly for wildlife photography and it has worked great. I had previously used a Nikon 1.7 teleconverter with my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens as recommended by a well known Nikon blogger and there is no comparison, the 80-400mm is by far superior. I didn't get the Kirk bracket because so far I have pretty good luck using an arca mount on the bottom of the Nikon mounting bracket. I did learn to leave the VR on while it is mounted on a tripod especially when it is extended to 400mm. I am very pleased with the results.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I think this lens is great, I own the previous version and this one is better. The auto focus is faster, thanks to the motor in the lens. I dont think the barrel is to big as others have stated, but I have good size paws and actually think the lens feels better in my hands. I bought this for a trip I took to Hawaii with my wife to watch the whales. The only lens filter I bought for it is a B&W clear to protect the lens. Looking at the water was a dream, the glass in this is great, the nano coating and ED lenses reduced the glare and no filters needed, I got some great shots of whales with it. In the past trips to Hawaii I had the first version and needed to put on Polarizing filter to reduce glare on water, with the new one it was not needed and the colors in the water came out great also. The build is better than the first version and the layout of the focus ring and zoom ring is much better. The only thing the lens did not have going for it was the tripod collar. But I took care of that and bought an aftermarket one and problem solved. To be honest it bothered me at first but after using the lens I feel the money spent went into the glass and its contruction, so no more worries.

So if you are thinking about getting one just get it. If you have the first version and are taking lanscape pictures in good lighting maybe not, but if you are taking pictures in the dusk and dawn, water pictures, and or action photos then I think you should invest. Plus the lens price has just dropped which was a nice surprise for me because I used the rebate to buy a gopro hero 4.

I am very happy with the investment and have not looked back.

I purchased this lens and could not remove the rear lens cap. Even after using many utilities that open stuck jars to a huge plummer wrenched that removes the toughest bolts. Nikon customer care is indifferent to customer problems and thankfully B&H is exchanging the lens. The main concern I have is where has the Nikon quality control?

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I'm very happy with this new iteration of the Nikkor 80-400mm. About time, Nikon, but well done! I had the original (non AF-S) 6 years ago--used it once and sold it. The addition of AF-S has turned this into a great carry lens for me for birding. Not too big or heavy and with good reach. My Nikkor 500mm f/4 is a bit heavy to carry around for hours and really needs a solid tripod. And my Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 with 1.7x teleconverter is not as sharp as this lens, IMO, not surprisingly. I still won't sell the 70-200mm though as it's excellent for near-distant subjects.Image quality with this lens is excellent on my D7100 (DX), edge-to-edge and even at 400mm and f/5.6. I did fine-tune the lens focus with my body, as I do with all my telephotos--this can make a noticeable improvement.Focus is fast and accurate enough and the zoom is smooth. VR seems to work as advertised. Some CA is present but easy enough to minimize in Photoshop. I did replace the tripod collar with a Kirk Lens Collar, which supports the lens in 2 places and feels much more solid. If I had to find something to complain about it would be the price--Canon's new 100-400 is ~$ less at this time. Yes this lens isn't cheap, but it's a quality Nikkor and fits my needs very well. I've taken some bird photos that I love with it so far, and look forward to many more.

My wife and I share this Nikkor lens for long zoom shots. The image quality is amazing! It is a bit heavy, but I expected that from a long zoom lens. I was pleasantly surprised with the pictures my wife shot using this lens "hand held" capturing action shots. Amazing.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I use this lens to shoot wildlife, primarily birds, attached to a Nikon D7100 Body. I had been using the original 80 x 400 lens for many years before buying this new model. This lens does focus faster but frankly, my end image results are not noticably better than the results I achieved with my old lens. And the truth is, I haven't figured out if this end result is primarily related to the camera body, the new lens, or me, the photographer. It could be I'm just not very good.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

This lens is amazingly sharp. It focuses very well in low light. If you photograph very fine print (say at 40 feet) and then magnify the image to the maximum (on a D810 Nikon), the characters remains sharp with a clear view of the paper fibers. This lens is not light. You have a real hunk of glass in your hands but it can be easily moved about or held still. With slow shutter the VR yields motion-free images at speeds that would normally result in blur.I've only owned this lens for several weeks but is definitely a go-to lens for many applications.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Amazing lens that is incerdibly sharp throughout the range. Its auto focus is incerdibly fast, and quite despite it misfiring a little often. Its heavier than I would have liked but thats not a huge issue and its something I can work around. I use this lens for sports and nature photography and its perfect for that. Its VR helps alot and could theorectically be used handheld even in low light.

I bought this to replace my Nikon 200-400mm that I've had for years. I will use this lens mostly hand held for birds in flight, airplane photos and wildlife like whales from a boat.
It is much lighter and easier to hand hold then the 200-400, but I do lose a stop or two.
So far the lens it very sharp and quick to focus. My only complaint is the tripod ring which seems very flimsy and will wobble when mounted on a tripod. I may upgrade the ring to a Really Right Stuff after market ring which I assume will be more sturdy with less wobble. RRS makes high quality precision equipment, but they are not cheap.
All in all I do recommend this lens, especially for hand held action.
