The NIKKOR prime lens features a focal length of 18.5mm (35mm equivalent: 28mm) for wide-angle shooting, as well as a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture. Frame shots using the large 3.0-inch LCD monitor, which has a resolution of 921k pixels. Record Full HD 1080p video with stereo sound, and connect the supplied EG-CP16 cable for playback on your TV. DX-Format CMOS Sensor
Large APS-C size sensor--the same one used in Nikon D-SLR cameras--features a resolution of 16.2MP. It works with the EXPEED 2 image-processing engine to produce sharp image quality, high ISO sensitivity up to 25,600 equivalent, and low noise. The processor manages image data with high speed and accuracy while preventing the generation of excess heat. With the removal of the optical low-pass filter, the COOLPIX A is able to capture images with exceptional sharpness and extremely fine detail. Micro-lenses located above the sensor are arranged to produce natural, edge-to-edge sharpness
28mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Prime Lens
Despite its small size, the fine optics of this ultra-compact 18.5mm (35mm equivalent: 28mm) f/2.8 wide-angle NIKKOR lens are specially designed to deliver exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness, smooth tonal gradation, highly effective spherical aberration and coma correction--for consistent quality throughout the entire frame. Capture images comparable to those taken with D-SLR interchangeable lenses. The lens has an ultra-compact configuration of seven elements in five groups, as well as a seven-blade iris diaphragm for sharp detail at the focus points and pleasing background blur in the out-of-focus regions of the image
3.0" LCD
Featuring an integrated panel and glass structure, the large 3.0-inch, 921k-pixel TFT LCD monitor remains viewable even in bright sunlight. The structure minimizes reflections and decreases light loss for clearer visibility, while providing a wide viewing angle. The LCD features 9-level brightness adjustment and offers approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage
Comfort and Control
The buttons, dials and switches on the camera have been designed and arranged to afford maximum comfort. Manual options like focus ring adjustment allow you to wield precision control over your compositions. Most of the operation system and the GUI are consistent with Nikon DSLRs. The camera features a tough aluminum alloy frame with a top surface covered by magnesium alloy for greater durability.
Exposure Control
You can control the COOLPIX A exposure options with the same operating system used by Nikon DSLR cameras. The Mode dial makes it easy to choose from AUTO, P (with Program shift), S, A and M exposure control modes, as well as two of your own personalized setting configurations: U1 and U2. For still photos, exposure compensation is +5 to -5 in 1/3 steps, while for videos, it's +2 to -2. AE lock, AE bracketing and manual with exposure bracketing are also available
Autofocus
Contrast-detect AF with the following focus-area selections: Face-priority, normal area, wide area and subject-tracking AF
Manual Focus Operation
In addition to autofocus operation, the COOLPIX A has a manual focus ring for when you want to take creative control DSLR-style, with the ability to alter the focus plane slightly forward or backward. This can be especially helpful in macro work
Full HD Movie Recording
Capture Full HD 1080p videos at 30fps with stereo sound. The subject-tracking AF feature keeps even moving subjects in clear focus. By connecting an HDMI cable to the camera's HDMI mini port, you can output the movie to an HDTV for playback. The HDMI output provides the following resolution options: Auto, 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i
Continuous Shooting at 4fps
To help capture fast-moving action, the camera can perform continuous capture of full-resolution (16MP) images at up to 4 frames per second, for a maximum of 26 shots (when image quality is set to NORMAL)
Active D-Lighting
Reveal the details in both dark and light areas of high-contrast scenes. With Active D-Lighting, you can do it automatically. Set it either to Auto or select from several degrees of strength. Auto bracketing is also possible
Picture Control
Choose from six settings: Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Landscape and Portrait. When you desire further fine-tuning, you can manually adjust the sharpness, contrast, brightness, saturation and hue. The settings can be saved for future use
Auto White Balance
In order to determine an ideal white balance, this feature precisely analyzes scene color and brightness information. Select normal to render white as pure white, or choose to render the warmth of ambient, incandescent lighting. White balance bracketing is also available
Built-in Flash
TTL auto flash with monitor pre-flashes; manual flash control also available. The guide number is approximately 6' (21 m) when fired in manual mode at full power and ISO 100. Flash compensation: -3 - +1 EV in steps of 1/3 EV
Retouch Menu
Camera comes equipped with various in-camera image-editing functions. Selective color creates a black-and-white image in which only the specified color(s) remains. Miniature effect makes an image look like a small scene taken in macro mode, while Color sketch creates vivid, pop-art inspired images. Other options include: Red-eye correction, Trim (3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 16:9 and 1:1), Monochrome (Black-and-white, Sepia and Cyanotype), Filter effects (Skylight, Warm filter, Red/Green/Blue intensifier, Cross screen and Soft), Color balance, Resize, Image overlay, RAW processing, Edit movie, Quick retouch, Color outline, Straighten, Fisheye, and Perspective control
Virtual Horizon
The in-camera virtual horizon feature can detect and display horizontal inclination on the LCD monitor. This function is especially useful when shooting subjects such as still lifes, landscapes and architecture
Self-Timer
Choose 20, 10, 5 or 2 sec delay
Wi-Fi via Optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter
With the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter connected, you can wirelessly transmit images taken by the COOLPIX A to a smart device with Wireless Mobile Utility installed, allowing you to share your photos and videos via email or social networking services (SNS). Additionally, you can use your compatible smartphone or tablet as a remote shutter release for the camera while using the device screen as a monitor
Supplied ViewNX 2 Software
This simple and intuitive software helps you get the most out of your images and movies after shooting. ViewNX 2 provides importing and browsing capability while also incorporating image-editing functions such as Resize, Brightness, Crop, Straighten and NEF (RAW) image processing. High-definition and high-quality RAW processing is achieved by utilizing the same processing algorithm as Capture NX 2 that faithfully reproduces Nikon image quality. Its movie-editing functions help you create your own original movies quickly and easily, and Nikon's new and improved image sharing and storage service, NIKON IMAGE SPACE, works smoothly with ViewNX 2, allowing you to log in directly from the software for easy uploading without activating a browser.
File System
DCF, Exif 2.3, DPOF, and PictBridge compliant
Supported Languages
Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, European Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish
Recommended Optional Accessories
The DF-CP1 Optical Viewfinder gives you more freedom in determining composition. It covers the angle of view of a 28mm (35mm equivalent) lens and provides 90% frame coverage at infinity. You can use the UR-E24 Adapter Ring to attach an HN-CP18 lens hood and filters with a diameter of 46mm. The hood prevents unwanted stray light from entering your lens, thereby minimizing flare. Nikon's range of Speedlight flash units are also available to give you more power and creative control than the built-in flash can offer. Record your shooting locations via the GP-1 GPS Unit, which appends the latitude, longitude and altitude to EXIF data.
Recommended Optional Capture NX 2 Software
Nikon's RAW images (NEF: Nikon Electronic Format) maintain extremely rich data. Only Nikon's Capture NX 2 can fully utilize this data with its optimized file format and software processing algorithms. With the enhanced speed of the algorithms, high-speed processing is achieved. This enables high-speed, stress-free editing even if the data size is large. Also, Capture NX 2 supports 64-bit (native) to realize a comfortable working environment. You can focus on editing with ease because it is possible to leave the original image intact with NEF editing. In addition to the intuitive and simple editing using Color Control Points, it incorporates various functions such as Auto Retouch brush, Batch Processing, Quick Fix, Straighten Tool, Vignette Control, Auto Color Aberration Control and Distortion Control

I do almost all of my shooting with prime lenses and 28mm is my most comfortable focal length, so a camera of this quality that I can stick in a pocket and take anywhere is right in my wheelhouse. I also do a lot of street shooting and this is the best street camera I've ever used for how I like to work. Between a good distance scale and focus ring and a GREAT auto-ISO setup (the best I've yet seen or used), I can almost forget the details of focus and exposure (exposure compensation being the one control I use a lot while shooting) and just concentrate on the content of the shot. The AF speed is a non-issue for me because I'm always using zone focus for fast moving subjects at this focal length. And for more stationary shots where I might want less depth of field, the AF is more than adequate.

I also do plenty of other general shooting with this camera and its great for landscapes, urban scenery, abstracts, etc...Between its fine lens, great IQ, great low light performance, its really an amazing little camera. I also shot extensively with the Ricoh GR and its arguably a better value, but for how I work, the Nikon is the better camera for me.

The only things I'd change if Nikon was ever to do a firmware update is I'd make the manual focus distance sticky when you turn the camera off and back on, so it wouldn't always reset to infinity, and I'd make the ring around the OK button another exposure compensation control in aperture or shutter priority mode - this dial doesn't do ANYTHING in those modes and it would be great to have exposure comp that readily available. And the camera should always show the current exposure compensation on the screen, instead of only when you press the exposure comp button. Otherwise, I don't think I'd change a thing...

    2) No VR (vibration reduction)
    3) The silver finish feels slippery to the hands, compared to the black finish feels dslr-like.
    4) Video quality: despite the location of the video setting; the video quality has pronounced moire.
    5) Fixed lens: No Zoom
    6) f/2.8 maximum aperture

    Pros:

    1) Image Quality: the jpeg renders colors better than my Nikon D90 and D7000. Colors of the jpegs looks similar to the D3's
    2) Glass: The lens is superb

    4) Flash Hot Shoe: Used it with a wireless transciever.
    5) Manual Focusing
    6) Non-low-pass filter

    8) Lower noise at high ISO (compared with the D7K)

    Wishful Improvements:

    1) Zoom capabilties: 28-50mm
    2) Max Aperture: at least f/2
    3) VR
    4) Articulating screen

Comments about COOLPIX A Digital Camera (Black):

Photos of dog retrieving were easy, 28 mm wide equivalent lens, f 8 @ 1,500, pre-focus six feet away, release shutter. Very sharp. Buy it with the Optical Finder package, the finder clicks on firmly, it is small, and helps with outdoor composition. Great package, excellent Nikon colors, very, very quiet by turning of shutter and beep sounds. Good knock around camera at the new low price. Backpacking, bike trips, kids, and family shooter no problem.

      Pros:
Beautiful build quality including the the LCD glass. All metal case and controls are great. Excellent Nikon color and IQ. Totally pocketable with a decent APS C sensor. Easy to shoot manually.
      Cons:
Manual focus is best done with the forefinger below the camera body. I don't manual focus this camera. It hunts a bit in low light but it's a pocket rocket.
      And...well, it's a point and shoot.
But at the price B&H is selling these you cannot go wrong.
After owning this little camera I can see why Nikon wanted an arm and a leg for it.
That's no longer an issue here at B&H.
I would forget the optical viewfinder unless you shoot in full auto. It has no communication with the camera and it is just a nice little glass with frame lines.

Comments about COOLPIX A Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this as an alternative to my large and heavy D800 on the grounds that the best camera is the one you have with you and a fixed lens would force me to concentrate on composition. I use it to take pictures of my immediate rapidly vanishing urban environment and the 28 mm lens is ideal. The quality is excellent - pin sharp and effortlessly accurately exposed. I shoot in raw but the colors are spot-on and I need to do very little in Lightroom.

It will become my travel camera in Japan later this year.

I had always wanted a Leica for such things but this was way cheaper and exactly what I wanted.

Comments about COOLPIX A Digital Camera (Silver):

Excellent picture quality and great size. However, there are a few shortcomings. Aside from the fixed 28mm (equivalent) focal length, battery life could be a little longer and autofocus hunts. Should have optical vibration reduction for a camera with a list price of over 1K.

Overall, happy I got it. Sharpness and color are excellent. Shoots great B/W also. Camera limitations are to be expected if you want a small package.

Got an excellent deal from B&H on this camera. Worth every penny. Not sure I would have paid full price.

This is going to be a surprise gift for my daughter's 30th birthday. This camera will serve as a fine upgrade to her old Canon 630. Nikon makes dependable cameras and this one provides the manual controls she is seeking.I bought this model during a Deal Zone sale. I have been a B&H customer for over 25 years and their stock, sales, website, shipping, delivery and service are hard to beat. I highly recommend you include them whenever you are shopping for photographic, video, or sound equipment and supplies.

Comments about COOLPIX A Digital Camera (Silver):

At list price, the Coolpix A was wildly overpriced; at the holiday sale price, it was a heck of a deal. Super sharp lens, and having a DX sensor that'll slip into a jacket pocket is a definite treat. A fixed 28mm angle of view takes a little getting used to, and isn't for people who spend most of their time at the tele end of things. If you don't mind getting close to your subject, it's great.

lack of zoom, IS is no problem . I am mountaineer/hiker and need a quality camera in my pocket all the time. Takes very sharp pictures. Its video not so good nor autofocus but for nature photography they arent critical. Also no hdr. Noise very visible after iso 2000. All metal construction is a big plus.

Nikon mispriced this camera when it first came out. At $ this is a great camera for street photography. The Fixed 28mm lens is perfect. Image quality in both jpg and RAW are great. It is small enough to fit in your jacket pocket. Now you have no excuse not to carry a capable camera everywhere you go.

You'll know if you need or want this camera. Takes pics just as nice as my D7000 but doesn't focus nearly as fast.

Perfect for traveling when you want to go light.

Comments about COOLPIX A Digital Camera (Silver):

One thing I really like about some of the 4/3 cameras is the fact that they are incredibly user friendly despite their small size. The Coolpix A, a 'C sensor' camera, takes great pictures and appears to be well made, but it is hard to believe (after owing many Nikons) that they would make a camera that is so difficult to use. Going to a menu for video is insane! Nothing is intuitive. At its reduced price, this camera is a bargain, but would never buy at $1000.

If you don't already have a high quality pocket size camera AND if you don't need tele zoom, this is one of the best buys ever. An APS-C sensor puts it in the serious league, and its superlative 28mm lens makes it a serious contender for larger DSLR's.
Only alternatives are the Ricoh GR or if you do need smaller size and don't mind the lower image quality/ resolution, the Sony RX100.
Small niggles, as mentioned earlier, the manual focus resets to infinity ea time you power it back up .. and some subtle deficits on B&W rendition and color tones. Which other cams nail better without post processing.

This little gem creates very sharp and detailed images, and has most all of the flexibility of a DSLR. It is best used by someone who is willing to take the time to compose and shoot with deliberation. The 28 mm wide-angle lens limits the camera's use as a general point and shooter, but in the right situations it will shine. A great choice for backpacking.

Comments about COOLPIX A Digital Camera (Black):

I agree with everyone else that this is not the fastest-focusing camera - not even fast by today's standard. If you enjoy strolling in the park or down a street, leisurely picking the more static subjects and capture beautiful images, then this is your camera. You don't even have to worry about the zoom because it has none. Just walk up to the right distance, frame, hold steady and hold you breath (no stabilization) and click. Wait for the focus and shutter to do its magic and then enjoy the images later.

Comments about COOLPIX A Digital Camera (Black):

Defect became apparent as soon as I inserted the battery and tried to set the clock. The "up" and "right" positions of the rotary multi-selector were inoperative. As such, there was no way to move the cursor on the clock-set page to the right. There was no way to scroll up or access any submenu on any page. I could not move the focal point up or right in the viewfinder. Once the focal point was in the bottom left corner of the electronic viewfinder, there was no way to recenter it without cycling camera modes or camera power. Before I had shot even one photo, I knew I would be sending this camera back for a refund.

When I finally took some photos, they were fine. The camera's weaknesses and strengths are well-documented by other reviewers, and I found the same during the hour or so I used the camera for test shots.

The defect with the rotary multi-selector also manifested itself when I reviewed the test photos through the LCD screen. Now, the "up" and "right" positions became "Delete" buttons. So, I had essentially 3 "delete" keys on the back the camera: 1) The button with a trashcan mnemonic, 2) The "up" position on the rotary multi-selector, and 3) The "right" position on the rotary multi-selector.

I've been shooting Nikon since I was a kid and having out-of-the-box reliability issues for as long. My first Nikkormat FT2 had a light meter that would not shut off, a D70 had defective autofocus, and a D600 had the dust problem. I considered keeping this Coolpix A and sending it off for warranty repair, since Nikon factory-repair usually returns the camera in a better-than-new state. But, this Coolpix A was an impulse buy motivated by a price markdown. I didn't need the camera, and I sure didn't need the hassle. So, I sent it back.

B-H upheld its end of the deal. Their order process, delivery, and return process were all excellent.

Watched the camera for a long time. When the price dropped I went for it and couldn't be more delighted. So light weight and images are so sharp. Could not be happier. Also got the viewfinder but not needed to use it yet. The quality of the images and the convenience of having it at all times in my bag makes me sorry I have lived without a light weight camera of this quality until now.
