The Lowel GL-1 Power LED is a compact handheld light source that is ideal for any type of event or location photography that demands portability, flexibility and ease of use. The GL-1's ergonomic appeal is readily apparent, from the rubberized exterior to the lockable trigger that enables dimming from 5.0-100%. The removable, rechargeable battery is located at the base for precise balance and its flat underside and low-profile feet allow placement on a table or other flat surface. There's also a 1/4"-20 threaded socket for tripod mounting.

The GL-1's flexible qualities begin with the focusing head with a 5:1 spot-to-flood ratio that allows you to back light or hair light your subject or pull back to add some fill light when needed to open up the shadows. The trigger-controlled dimming and a thumb-operated light intensity dial allows 1 hand operation for multi-tasking scenarios. The GL-1 comes with the light head, battery, multi-voltage charger and AC adapter. Its 3,000K output can be cooled to 5,300K for use in daylight with the purchase of an optional filter that mounts to the GL-1's 82 mm front screw thread.

Focusing Head
The GL-1's 8:1 focusing range lets you zero in to highlight your subject with a tight spot or pull back to wide flood and add fill light to a larger area
2 Ways to Dim
Use the adjustable Dimming Trigger to quickly get the perfect light level for short term handheld use or lock the light in the ON position and dial in an intensity for longer term constant output at any level

Attached is an image from the very first time I attempted to photograph the Milky Way and was also the very first night I tried light painting. Using the GL-1 was so user friendly. No hot spots when the wide beam was used and when I used the narrow focused beam the reach was perfect. Light color/temp stayed consistent as I played w/ the focal intensity all in the same shot. The battery lasted longer than I did that night. I'm a big fan.

This light cost me almost one thousand dollars and it's not really up to its standard...I will explain you why...
By the time you buy the light, Tiffin filter and extra battery plus hood its almost comes close to one thousand dollars. That's a lot for a light
    - The light is NOT dimmable from 0% to 5% this matters because with today's DSLR ISO capability, I really need just touch of light to lighten the subject, by the time you turn on the light in tight space its little too bright...Which is not bad some time, but wish it was dimmable to 5% to 0%
    - If you install the Tiffin filter to get the daylight balance, you are losing 4 to 5 stop of light...That's way too much light loss and doesn't really help with that much of light loss when you need powerful light.
    - My biggest reason to give this light low rating is because the construction of the body itself...This maybe my 5th time using this light (and I take care of my equipment's like baby)each time for about 15 to 30 minutes and the battery holder comes out and battery falls out of the body. Poor construction, with the price you pay, you expect the product to perform for long time.

Comments about Lowel GL-1 Power LED:

I had bought this for use at weddings. Flash is great, but sometimes, seeing the light right away and adjusting the power to match the ambient light is definitely quicker. This is when the GL-1 comes in. It is heavy, the first time we used it, our female assistant struggle to keep the light focused (her hands were shaking after holding it up for a while). If you are holding it at chest/tummy level, its is easy to hold, but if you want your light to come from above...its gets heavy, quickly. I am bringing a long pole to mount next time. The light outout is quite good. It was more powerful than i thought (after reading some reviews) The centerspot of light can be a bit hotter than the edges. I used it for a few first dances and it was nice to have the light on the couple without having to worry about bouncing flashes and adjusting settings. Though an assistant is highly recommended! A second GL-1 would add a nice kicker...but I might need another assistant!! For an engagement session, my clients arrived late and the sun was gone, we shoot with the GL-1 for about 1 hour before juice ran out. I do plan to get another spare battery. In general, we like it (except for my poor female assistant...it is quite heavy after about 3 minutes holding it over your head). I hope they can improve on a few things in the next version, thus only 4 stars here. Wish for Lithium battery - so it can be much lighter 2) the battery compartment sucks...really! Needs a more secure/quality bottom part of the light. My battery was either stuck or dropped out easily. Its a heavy battery..would suck to land on my assistants' toes!

Comments about Lowel GL-1 Power LED:

Bought this reallllly expensive flash light for weddings. Firstly, if it's not dawn or dusk, don't bother using out doors, just not strong enough. The daylight balance filter steals quite a bit of output power as well. I like using the GL-1 for getting ready shots, toss a highlights into a portrait, and pretty legit for large venue receptions and table shots. The design, ergonomics, and hands-on usability are great, but the build quality is shat. My battery case/cover thing broke the 1st 3minutes of the first day on duty, had to do the rubber-band repair. I'm still not sure if it's worth the money. I'm using this much less than I expected and I could definitely do without.

Comments about Lowel GL-1 Power LED:

The battery will not come out and it cannot be charged inside the unit. My husband has been a welder for over 20yr but he couldn't remove it even after using clamps, pliers and unscrewing half of it. I tried it once before it went dead and became useless. It is nice with good white balancing, very dim with a daylight conversion filter, doesn't blend well with ice lights, studio lights or flash without the filter. BTW it says it's a 82mm bayonet mount filter but it's a screw mount. I planned on keeping it until the battery issues. Now I am undecided.

I bought the GL-1 light to use at weddings for some of my portraits. A bit heavy but when you get that shot you could not create with another light it is well worth it. I have my assistant carry it while it's attached to a Black Rapid Sport Strap.

I bought an extra battery just in case the first one drains during a wedding.

Comments about Lowel GL-1 Power LED:

We use a set of strobes for most of our lighting work, but there are times when timelines don't afford that luxury, which is why we looked at video lights. The market is flooded with LED panels... which can't really zoom or adjust like we need them too. Upon reading reviews on the GL-1, we decided to give it a try.

Upon arrival, our first impression was that its big... and cheap feeling. Reviews had mentioned this same thing, but it really doesn't hit until you hold one. The battery doesn't fit the best, the power dial roller is way too touchy... and the entire thing is made of plastic. While we don't plan to drop it, I don't think it would survive a fall.

However... the quality of light it produces is solid. Its even and consistent. The temperature is spot on. I do wish it had a bit more power... You're really only going to use it indoors, in the shade or at dusk... which is expected. If you need light during mid-day sun, you're going to have to use flash still.

We're still up in the air if we're going to keep it or return it... It does great things, but I worry about the longevity of it, especially when it costs so much to replace.

Bought this in preparation for wedding photography season. Since I come from a filmmaking background I like to see the light while I photograph and this light works wonders. I was very surprised by the amount of throw that this light has. I will definitely get a lot of use out of this. Would have given this product 5 stars if it were made with less plastic. Also it is a little difficult to disconnect the battery from the light.

The idea is truly innovative and the light is nice. However, when you hold this item it feels cheap. The plastic structure does not feel sturdy and the plastic controls feel loose and sloppy instead of responsive. You can buy a $[$]"homeowner" grade cordless drill or a $[$] "construction professional" grade cordless drill. I was hoping for the later and in my opinion it is more the former. I hope it stands up to travel and day to day use.

I will use it for events and weddings. I find the protability and brightness of the light to be very convenient. It is not for constant lighting but to be used in short shooting sessions turning the unit on and off. You have to pay attention to over heating and auto shut off. Mine shut off during my shoot I was not noticing the overheat warning my attention was in shooting.

This thing is amazing, outstanding light quality, with the ability to quickly zoom in an out, not having to deal with a snoot, and the ability to adjust the power gives you a great advantage over speedlights yet the same portability. The cooling fan is very quiet. Its a little heavy so if using the mounting threads on the bottom make sure the tripod has a good head or use a light stand you don't want this falling over. I haven't really pushed the distance on the unit but I am well satisfied with its performance and battery life is good enough for the weddings and portraits that I do. Very very nice.

First saw this light demonstrated at DPPA wedding seminar and knew I would love it. Made an end of year business purchase and so glad I did. Just used it on a location shoot for a home interior showcasing the holiday decor for next year's home tour. This light makes it so easy. It is light weight, no need to be setting up light stands, bouncing, diffusing, etc. This light can go dim or brighten, narrow and widen beam with the touch of a finger. In my opinion or is a fabulous light that I can see getting a lot of use - worth very dollar.

I bought it a month ago and only used it once. It will not HOLD A charge up. Works great plugged in. For the cost it should work longer than 1 time and less than 30 days.... not happy with it.

I've only had the opportunity to take a few pops using the gl1 so far, but I have had the chance to play with it, a light meter, and a reflector and was able to place and throw light quite effectively. I wouldn't have minded a few more lumens, and find the light quality to be a tad harsh and improved by diffusion. In fact I'm looking at diffusion lens filters for it now; its a tad tricky, and one instance where extra lumens would come in handy. Too much diffusion cuts light output noticeably. All said, its a game changer, it delivers on advertising claims but could still be better. Glad I got it, can't wait for next version.

I use this product mostly in the darkest of situations, right after a sunset when the glow of the color is still present, but the light is gone, weddings, and indoor portraiture. This light is great for me because I do not have to lug flashes and set them up. During events, people get moving, children move, and you do not have to be stationary in one location to get great shots. It is a bit heavy, but not difficult to carry. It is easier if you have an assistant to hold the light as you move.I tried to use this during the daylight hours in dark areas of locations and it performs ok depending on how dark it actually is. This will not light up your subject during the day very well. It performs better as it gets darker. I do wish that it were more balanced out and not so bulky feeling, it takes some getting used to. The construction could have been a bit more higher quality, the dimmer trigger is plastic and hollow, but overall, I am so grateful for this as its proven to be great lighting without ALL of the equipment and set up required of flashes and other external lighting.
