I must admit, before purchasing this mic I did some extensive research on the best kind of shotgun/boom mics for video work. After seeing several professional endorsements for the NTG-3 I decided it would give me the best overall quality and flexibility for what I do. I've only had it for about a week now and I pair it with Sound Device's 302 portable field mixer, and the sound quality is pretty incredible. It is so crystal clear, especially if you're recording sound effects and getting close to the action. It also works great for picking up vocals from interviews and narratives. Overall, I'm very happy I chose this mic.

The range of tones and general sound captured by this mic are just as good as all the other review say. However, I was personally looking for a directional mic that was directional. This picks up a lot of sound from the sides. In a crowded setting (like an event or a reception or a party), it's really hard to get a tight focus on one person speaking. I sort of feel like the mic is missing the point of its purpose because of this.

Comments about Rode NTG-3 Precision RF-Biased Shotgun Microphone (Black):

I purchased this for use in Filmmaking after I've rented and used this Microphone on a recent short film I shot and it does outperform the rest of the microphones I had on my list for consideration: The Sennheiser MKH 416, the Audio Technica AT8035 and AT8015 as well as the Sennheiser ME 66. Rich and pristine Sound quality with excellent Sound reproduction while rejecting interference from frequencies that would normally interfere with other Microphones on a budget price. Well built with a Storage Cylinder and Pop filter, both supplied by the manufacturer. It is also Phantom Power as this is the best way for a Shotgun Microphone of this quality to give you the clean sound you need for your production. If you take the recommendations of the Manufacturer, thou shall receive optimum performance from yee Microphone.

This mic is a workhorse. Extremely clear audio, very directional, and the build quality is excellent. I use this mic paired with Sounddevices MM-1 preamp, and a Tascam DR-40 recorder, and couldn't be happier.

This is my second Rode mic, the first being a VideoMic Pro for DSLRs. I have to say that this mic compares very favorably to the Sennheiser 416. I also love the padded cylinder that they include for transport - a very nice touch. All in all, I'd rate it excellent in both sound quality and for value.

Although, the only other shotgun mic that I have used is an Azden SGM-2. I will have to say that this mic blows the Azden out of the water. The self-noise is almost non-existent and the sensitivity is amazing. My recommendation is that if you are a fledgling indie film-maker like me, spend the extra money and get this mic. It will be well worth the extra money.

Comments about Rode NTG-3 Precision RF-Biased Shotgun Microphone (Black):

When I was starting out I didn't have the money for a nice shotgun mic like this one. Instead I got the cheaper NTG-2, which has its shortcomings but served me well at first. But after shooting a video on a rainy day once and hearing the little POPS and CRACKLES in the audio later I knew that it was time to upgrade. This mic performs in both wet and dry conditions, and it's WAY more sensitive than my old mic. I don't have to get as close to the subject to get a good signal, which is very helpful. It's phantom powered so that's different from my old mic. So far it hasn't been a problem. It's thinner too so sometimes I have to wrap some paper around it so that it fits into a standard size mic mount. The audio quality is much better than my old mic thought. I'm very pleased with this mic so far.

Wow, I was using an Audio Technica AT815b and this mic destroys that one. Of course they are a much different price point, but still. Good low end on voices from a reasonable distance. It is MUCH smaller but doesn't seem any less directional. The signal to noise ratio is light and day. I am a huge fan of this mic. I don't feel I will ever need to upgrade because this is so doing such a great job for me.

Another reason I bought this is because it is supposed to perform very well in hot and humid conditions. Since I work at a summer camp in Southwest MO, I could definitely benefit from that kind of durability. I interested to see how it hold up on the field as apposed to in my studio. Again, it is outstanding for voice capture in my studio when I shoot green screen.

Even without testing this in the heat of the summer yet, I think I have become a big fan of RODE microphones.

I've used a few shotguns with very pronounced sweetspots that have been pain due to the inconcistency throughout the polar pattern, but this mic does a great job of picking up sounds venly for a more natural sound. Use a lav to boost the signal , but keep this boom in the mix

The sound I've gotten from this mic is pristine! While the cost is a little on the expensive side for most, it is well worth the investment. It's phantom powered so make sure you have a camera or recorder that provides the 48v. I use this for everything.

How sick to use this broadcast quality microphone!
I can't find any cons on that item..

Perfect for interviews on a DSLR kit, weddings and conferences.

I would recommend it to anyone!

One of the best sounding shotguns I've ever used. Very good bass response for a shotgun and excelent side rejection. I'd argue this is the best shotgun you can buy for the money.

when i buy gear, i'm always looking to maximize the value i can get for my money. this mic has a great bang for the buck value in that it has a very clean sound that matches some higher end mics, great off axis cancelation (what you want in a shotgun mic), and still at a lower price than other mics in the same category

On one shoot thought I was hearing hum. Turned out to be the sound from a video game fan across the room. Clear highs and mids. Would be nice to have a little more bottom, but that's what mixers are for. Great with a dead cat.

This mic sounds really nice. I realized that together with a preamplifier this mic makes my GH2 way too bulky and costs almost as much as the camera itself with the lens. So, I decided to stick to my tiny MKE400 and use it more often on the boompole. But if I ever get a camcorder with XLR inputs NTG-3 will be my choice.

Comments about Rode NTG-3 Precision RF-Biased Shotgun Microphone (Black):

I use this mic to record mostly 'walk and talk' stories
                                                  Very sensitive.
If you're too close to the subject and they speak too loud it tends to distort...other than that it's nice.
