I bought this to upgrade the internal drive on my 17" MacBook Pro. The computer itself is very fast, but the traditional hard drive was keeping it slow. This SSD makes a HUGE difference. This SSD is the single most significant speed difference I have ever experienced from any upgrade. The drive is slightly thinner than a traditional hard drive, but does include a thin "shim" (looks like a rectangular frame) which makes the drive the same thickness as a traditional hard drive. My laptop did not require the shim but it's nice to know it's included.Watching the Mac "pinwheel" is now a thing of the past. I never wait on disk I/O anymore. If you need to clone your current hard drive (if you're upgrading an existing machine) then you may need an external drive enclosure so that you can copy the contents of your existing drive to the new drive. I use a Newer Technology Voyager Q -- this simple external hard drive dock allows you to temporarily attach external drives without having to deal with the hassle of mounting them into an external enclosure (the drive inserts into the Voyager Q like a cartridge -- no mounting screws. It's about as easy as dropping bread into a toaster.) Even after an upgrade, it's a much more affordable to buy external hard drives (sans enclosures) and attach them to hold your photo or video projects.Incidentally, if you are planning to use this drive as the internal boot-drive on a Mac running either Lion or Mountain Lion, you'll want to partition and format the drive and add an OS X "Recovery Partition" on the drive BEFORE installing it in your Mac. Apple provides the "Recovery Disk Assistant" (free) which will populate the recovery partition -- but for some reason they've hard-coded this utility so that it can only add the partition to an external drive and it must be connected via USB. Not knowing this, I cloned my drive to this new SSD, installed it (it worked!) and then I learned I couldn't add the recovery partition after-the-fact. I had to uninstall it, put the original hard drive back in my Mac, add the recovery partition to the new SSD (while attached externally via USB connection to my Voyager Q dock) and then put the SSD back into the Mac again. I wish I had known to just do this before putting it in the first time.Everything now works and my 17" MacBook Pro is extremely fast now.

I purchased this to install on my MacPro as the boot drive.

After installation & cloning, I discovered I had longer boot times than with a standard drive.

There was a firmware update by Crucial that had apparently been released recently that the drive needed to be updated to.

On a Mac, I was unable to update the drive's firmware after many hours of burning ISO's to CDs, flash drives running window's apps through bootcamps. I could not get any tech support from Crucial regarding the matter.

It was hopeless so I was forced to return the drive and get the Samsung equivalent. I haven't had any issues with the Samsung and I even successfully ran a firmware update on it from my Mac.

Comments about Crucial 960GB M500 2.5" Internal SSD:

I upgraded my early 2010 MacBook Pro from a regular 500GB to this Crucial 960GB SSD. Installation was very easy. The SSD itself is very slim, fits perfectly into the MackBook Pro drive bay. I did a clean install of Maverick, and copied the data from my old HDD. This SSD is AMAZING.. Before my MacBook Pro took nearly 1 minute once I cold booted the system and ready to login. With my old HDD applications such as Outlook and Office took longer to launch. With the new SSD, when I cold boot, 8 sends on the dot, and I can login.. every time . Outlook launches in 3 seconds and ready to use. Over all every app I use, Lightroom, Office, Safari, and Parallel Desktop launch really fast. My MacBook Pro just got a new life. I love this SSD. Battery life might have improved very slightly. Been using this SSD for nearly 6 months now. Highly recommend it.

Comments about Crucial 960GB M500 2.5" Internal SSD:

This is the second Crucial SSD I purchased in the last 3 months to upgrade aging MacBook Pros. This one is replacing my loaded up, tired old 5400 RPM 500Gig factory drive on my 4 year old MBP 17" with i5 and 8Gig RAM.

The competition wants a lot more for the same or less capacity in their offerings. I have used Crucial for years without any problems or complaints. They make a solid reliable product that doesn't completely empty your wallet in the process.

Boot up time on my MBP has been reduced down to about 20 seconds from the time I hit the power button until I am up and running on my desktop, and that includes a login screen inserted in the sequence. Programs launch and run extremely fast. I do believe I easily bought myself another 3 or 4 years of life from this machine, maybe more...

Comments about Crucial 960GB M500 2.5" Internal SSD:

With a four-year old Dell T3500 with Xeon processors and two non-RAID drives, the second drive failed. My son advised considering a SSD replacement. I have ended with two SSD 1 TB Crucial drives, the last from B&H, less costly than the big "A".

The drive is great, although the SSD drives needed updated Windows 7 Intel drivers, especially installing the setupRST.exe file from Intel's site to provide functionality for the Advanced Format (4k) aspect of the SSD drives. There is also a driver update if one already has the Intel "Rapid Storage Technology software installed. One needs at least the 12.5.0.1066 driver for Windows 7, maybe there are newer, but that works.

If you do not have that software upgrade or at least the newest driver to accommodate the SSDs, Windows Update does not work, no pictures or graphics load from emails (Internet loads fine), and a few other issues arise.

B&H does a great job with shipping and on-time delivery. As we migrate to faster drives (and the Crucial has made my old machine faster than when new on every count, notwithstanding the RAID 1 installation), we need to look at the Intel software that controls these things so the upgrade works out of the box.

So, install the latest Intel Rapid Storage technology software, follow the instructions in the on-line user manual for converting to RAID 1 without having to do a clean Windows install (the software keeps the master drive software intact and just copies it to the second drive for RAID 1), and allow the migration process to do its thing.

                Thank you, B&H for a cost-effective upgrade!

This is fast. Installed in 2006 Mac Pro with no problem - partitioned into 2 partitions, one for Lion and one for Mavericks. It loads both systems in about 5 seconds compared to the old HD at about 30 - 45 seconds. Crucial makes some of the best memory, so I hope this measures up in the long run.

Comments about Crucial 960GB M500 2.5" Internal SSD:

I've had an older than dirt 2006 15" Macbook Pro. The machine just works, but I have had to upgrade the hard drive 2 previous times, more out of space concerns than drive failure.

Recently, my drive failed and I had the option of either a) buying a new Macbook Pro or b) buying a new drive. I decided upon b) as it saved me a good amount of money while also being a component I could install in another Macbook when I finally decide to put this old machine to pasture.

Nowhere on the internet does it state that my machine would be compatible with this drive. Granted, I only get half the throughput from this drive as my machine has older hardware, but amazingly, everything works great. My machine is fast and snappy, and I can now store everything on the go without any external drives.

In terms of price/performance, you cannot beat this drive. I would totally recommend this to anyone looking to boost performance, especially if you work in music/video or do gaming.

Comments about Crucial 960GB M500 2.5" Internal SSD:

This drive met all my speed expectations and it was a nice upgrade from my older Crucial 256GB M4 SSD. I primarily use it in an external eSATA bus-powered enclosure for video editing purposes.

The only issue I have with the drive is that it occasionally unmounts especially during writes due to its peak power consumption of 5.34 watts. Most laptops are only capable of supplying up to 4.5 watts via bus power, per the latest USB 3.0 spec. I have fixed this issue by purchasing a power adapter for my enclosure that is capable of supplying up to 10 watts. If you are using this drive internally, you won't have this issue.

Bought this as a present to myself during the online holiday sales for my editing MacBook Pro (Late 2011) laptop. Very easy to install. I copied the main HDD to the new SSD using Disk Utility in the Startup Manager (took about 10 hours for 550GB of data via USB 2.0). Once complete, I swapped drives with a cheap OWC Tool Kit and the machine booted right up! I've definitely noticed an increase in speed, but perhaps not as much as I had hoped. Although, using Trim Enabler 3.0, the SSD is writing around 400MB/s and reading 440MB/s.

B&H offered a great deal on this 960 GB SSD so I purchased it. This Crucial SSD is known for its reliability and should be trouble free for years. I popped it in and it worked as expected. Boot-up times are now around 10 seconds.

Comments about Crucial 960GB M500 2.5" Internal SSD:

I have a 2010 15" MBP which is the older Sata 2, about half as fast as the 2011 onwards Sata 3. This means the performance boost is about half of what one would expect from replacing a HDD with an SSD since the SSD is faster than the connections on my MBP. That said, the boost is significant and noticeable - about 100 - 150% faster depending on the task. My read/write speeds went from about 105mb/s to 255mb/s with this drive compared to my 750Gb 7200rpm (a relatively fast HDD). Later models can boast 500mb/s.Boot times went from 45 seconds to about 23 seconds, opening Photoshop went from 11 seconds to about 5 seconds.... Everything is snappier!!!!Installation was easy, 20-30 minutes. First I made a clone of the hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. Then, after watching a video on OWC website, I opened and swapped drives. That was it. Oh, one more thing, remember to get TRIM software for maintenance. Prices are now coming down. I got my 960GB drive on the B&H Black Friday sale for only $[$] shipped. Much cheaper than a new MBP, especially the insane prices apple charges for a large SSD.
