Questions? Ask our experts:

A 77mm Hoya FL-W Fluorescent Hoya Multi-Coated (HMC) Glass filter is used to balance daylight film under warm white or white type fluorescent lamps.

NOTE: The FL series of filters alone does not always guarantee 100% correct color balance when shooting under fluorescent lighting. They are general purpose filters intended for moderate correction and will not, by themselves, necessarily provide perfect color rendition.

An FL-D Fluorescent Glass filter is used when you wish to correct for the greenish tone that appears when shooting daylight film under general purpose fluorescent lighting.  An FL-B filter is used to correct the color balance when shooting tungsten film under fluorescent lighting.

Fluorescent lamps burn at many different temperatures and often require more demanding filtration for exact results. For specific filtration and professional use, it is strongly recommended that a color temperature meter be employed along with Color Correction filters (i.e.CC30M) when shooting under fluorescent lighting. This is the only proven way to achieve exact color correction.

Multicoated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.

Pleasing skin tones under fluorescent lighting without flash
True-to-life color rendition
Essential in any environment where ambient light source is fluorescent
As one of the premier filter manufacturers, Hoya filters continue to made from quality glass assuring the photographer clear, sharp and accurate images
Hoya filters consistently provide even color all the way through the filter; All surfaces are ground and polished to specific thickness and tolerances
Even non-multi-coated Hoya filters have one layer of anti-reflective coating applied to each surface of the glass; Hoya's single layer coating decreases light reflection off the surface from approx. 9% to an average of 4-5%

Comments about 77mm FL-W Fluorescent Hoya Multi-Coated (HMC) Glass Filter for Daylight Film:

This is a well-made, high quality product. Few of us use film very often any more, but if you do and need to correct for this type of fluorescent lighting, here is an excellent color correction filter. Most often, as in my case, we are using FL-W for artistic reasons. This filter provides enhanced magentas which can give a very popular rendition of golden hour and blue hour skies. Bottom line: except under quasi-white fluorescent lighting, you will not achieve technically correct white balance, but you will achieve quasi-grooviness.

I like having one of these with me for helping me with bossting my sunset shots and giving them an extra splash of color. Don't use it with people or your faces will be purple too. Remember to gel your flash green if you do. I plan on using it as often as I can when doing sunset landscape shots.

Comments about 77mm FL-W Fluorescent Hoya Multi-Coated (HMC) Glass Filter for Daylight Film:

I purchased and use this filter for my digital images of cityscapes pre-dawn and post-dusk. Adds a nice "feel" to theses images.

Comments about 77mm FL-W Fluorescent Hoya Multi-Coated (HMC) Glass Filter for Daylight Film:

Like some of the other reviewers, I also purchased this filter after seeing a video from Bryan Peterson on enhancing sunsets, cityscapes, etc. at dusk. I've used this filter a couple of times and it certainly enhances the magenta colors and, in the right lighting circumstances, it has enhanced my images. However, I would recommend that you also shoot the same images WITHOUT using the filter in case you don't like the purple hue it creates. It's nearly impossible to remove the filter's color effects in post-processing. Just be somewhat judicious in how/when you use this filter. It's a neat tool to have in the camera bag!

Like most of the other reviewers here, I purchased this after reading that Bryan Peterson uses this filter to enhance the look of the sky in photos taken at dusk. It does not disappoint. If you commonly take a lot of city scape or landscape shots just after sun set, then you'll find it advantageous to get this filter.

I decided to try this after watching a Brian Petterson video on shooting the Tower bridge in London at dusk. I've only tried it once and the results are very promising. One thing though, you have to wait until light is just right, to early and the sky doesn't look right.

a color tone not available in post processing gives desirable enhancement of evening skies. It does sometimes require intensity adjustment by editing application.

I had ordered this product after seeing Bryan Peterson Youtube video on how ot shoot Cityscapes at night. He had referred to a FLW filter, and the search wasn't easy, I hope after this review is indexed by Google, people will find this easily. This filter add the WOW factor in my cityscape that I had shot with it.

I would highly recommend this product.
