The Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Super Multi-Coated (S-HMC) Glass Haze Filter is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.

Hoya's high transmission Super-Multi-Coating minimizes reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.

This outstanding filter offers revolutionary performance in light transmission and color balance. 12 layers of Super Multicoating are applied to the surfaces of the Skylight 1B and UV(0) models, which produces an average transmission of 99.7%.

Coupled with maximum surface precision, this allows increased resistance to flare and stunning images can be recorded at wide apertures without compromising the performance of your lenses.

If desired it can be left on the lens at all times for protection
Haze filters provide additional benefits of correction for Ultraviolet(UV) light which can register on film and videotape as a bluish cast and can obscure distant details
Ultraviolet filters allow you to correct for the UV effect to varying degrees

This is perfect for all wide angle lens... This is the perfect protector. After about a week i noticed that the UV filter had SOME BUT LITTLE finger prints on it..... so..... without the UV filter the lens would have been dirty and harder to clean. With the UV filter it's easier to clean because all you really need is an eye glass cleaning cloth and you're set to go.

While this may be a good filter, it is a maintenance nightmare. When attaching for the first time, I had the case open and decided to remove any dust on my Nikkor lens. Used a blower, and the little bit of dust from the lens must have flown onto the filter on the table. But once there, my nightmares started. I just could not get it off the filter surface. It just kept getting worse everytime something touched it (incl a lens cleaning cloth). After a lot of googling, I found out the easiest way to clean was to wash it in water with soap!!! As scared as i was, it was my only option. But that didn't help either. The dust and stuff are still there (and this is a new filter). I can't imagine what it'll be like when i actually use it.Despite all the cleaning, I'm "stuck" with a filter with lots of dust on it that'll never go away. Luckily, there is no effect on the pics as yet, whew! Before you buy this filter, I implore you to google two things:1. "thom hogan filters"2. "clean hoya filters"There is also a school of thought on whether HMC filters are actually better than non-coated ones. So do some reading on that as well. After that, if you're still convinced you have to have this, more power to you. I'd rather you spend your [$]on some other camera/lens accessory.Bottom line: I will never buy an HMC filter again. My lens hood is more than enough to protect my lens from scratches and bumps. I hope this will save you [$] - I know mine's in the drain.

Comments about Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Super Multi-Coated (S-HMC) Glass Haze Filter:

It is difficult to know what to look for in a filter like this, which I use to pritect my Canon 18-200 mm lens. I had read an on-line technical review on this filter that was very positive though, and I am happy with it.

Just purchased the new 50mm zeiss lens and was a little leery of putting glass in front of it, I just took a picture shooting right into the sun with absolutely no flare and crystal clear quality. Cleans very easy compared to others that I have, what a great investment.

Comments about Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Super Multi-Coated (S-HMC) Glass Haze Filter:

I use Hoya UV filters for protection of most of my lenses. I have one regular HMC (not super) UV filter, two Hoya HD UV filters, and this HMC super filter. I do not bother with a UV filter on my cheapest lens (Canon 50 mm f/1.8). The quality of materials and assembly on each Hoya filter is quite similar. They are all nicely assembled, and attach smoothly to the lens. The HD filters are reputed to be more impact resistant, and as such, I use the HD filters on everyday lenses that are more likely to get hard use. I use the regular HMC filter on a telephoto that has a large hood (which minimizes the risk of impact damaage to the lens or of problems with flare from the filter). This particular reviewed Super HMC (S-HMC) UV filter has the greatest number of coatings, and as such, is supposed to provide the best transmission and least reflectivity and flare of Hoya UV filters. It is possible to see the differences in the coatings on the filters by looking at reflected light on the surface of each filter. There is a difference between the different Hoya models.I use this filter as full-time protection on a higher-end lens, where I am least willing to comporomise on any reduction in image quality.Whether to use a UV filter or not is a personal decsion. If you want to use one for protection on your lens(es), then I can recommend Hoya's HMC Super filters. They can protect your lens and in most circumstances will not degrade your image quality.

Even though it seems a bit expensive for a simple UV filter, it's the excellent multi-antireflection coating that makes the product. Precision tooling on the threads is noticeable. Works great with other special effect filters.

Comments about Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Super Multi-Coated (S-HMC) Glass Haze Filter:

Most people wouldn't think there's much to a UV filter and if you're one of the ones who know better you can skip this.

However, when it comes to putting a UV filter on the front of your lens the usual justification is "I'd rather replace a filter than a front element." That's my situation.

When you choose a filter for that purpose you want to make sure that it won't alter the picture overmuch. And there's a great blog entry over on a lens rental site talking about the differences between cheap and not-cheap filters.

Needless to say I did a lot of research before deciding on this one and I am very pleased with it. In an overwhelming majority of the time I can't get ghosting or flare even if I try to do it. That's just what I was going for. About the only time I take it off (other than if I need to put a different filter in place, of course) is when I'm taking shots with the moon at an angle. Otherwise, I feel my lens is protected more than it otherwise would be and it's one fewer thing for me to obsess about.

Also, a word about the threads: I know it's partially dependant on the lens as well, but this one screws on and off "butter smooth."

I have this both to eleminate haze when necessary but mostly to protect the glass on a 17-55MM Tamron lens with the glass right at the front of the shell. I have not done with/without tests using the targets I have but the lens does seem to meet its advertised performance with the filter on.

Comments about Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Super Multi-Coated (S-HMC) Glass Haze Filter:

                                Good anti-glare lens protector.

Got this filter for lens protection on a new Nikon 24-8mm lens. Since I don't like to use a lens hood, the anti-glare of the S-HMC coating is a plus.

With Digtal and fixing everything in a computer, filters are old school now. But the cost is less than a new lens, so I would always have one on for protection.

I use this filter on my Fujinon 17:1 16x9 Movie lens and it is a nice heavy duty lens protector. I was using teh "C" compact UV before and it is was delicate. This is a very good lens protector for runa nd gun event shooting.

Comments about Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Super Multi-Coated (S-HMC) Glass Haze Filter:

After testing revealed noticeable deterioration of images taken at the 200 mm zoom setting of my Nikkor 18-200 mm, compared to no filter at all, using a cheap non-multi coated UV filter, I bought the Hoya S-HMC UV filter. My new comparison showed no difference between filter and no filter in sharpness, a significant improvement.

Got this filter as a protection for my front lens. Very good quality as expected from the Hoya brand. Slightly difficult to clean in the field but withstands scratching well.
