The MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base from Manfrotto is designed with a wide platform, optimal for HDSLR camera bodies. Smooth and precise, it has a maximum weight load of 11 lb and professional quality fluid cartridges on both its pan and tilt axes. It has a pre-set spring-loaded counterbalance of 5.3 lb, its lateral tilt range is -70°/+90° and it provides 360° panning rotation.

The side lock system on the MVH500AH allows the camera and sliding QR plate to click quickly into the head from above, instead of needing to be aligned and slid in from the back. This makes it easier and safer to mount your camera on this head. The head attaches to a tripod via a 3/8"-16 thread and offers both a 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 camera attachment. It also provides an Easy Link 3/8" connector on the side of the head to attach accessories such as a video monitor. The 500PLONG quick release plate is included with this head.

This head, in general, is rather nice. Tilt action was butter smooth out of the box. Quick release plate and mechanism are nice and easy to use.
However, pan action was horrendously stiff. It would actually shift the whole tripod, or would loosen the attachment plate from column. I popped off the pan screw cover, loosened the bolt, then re-tightened it with less torque. It now pans easily and smoothly.
Another thing is I think the tilt balancing spring is too tight. Tilt it more than 20 degrees either way, even with a DSLR+70-200 f2.8, and you have to struggle to keep it there without tightening the knob. Though gotta say, with video, you rarely need large angle tilts. Still, I will try to find a way to loosen the spring.

I got this as a leightweight option to my heavier tripod head and I understand that there are compromises with a head of this size and price. However, I still feel like this head has nowhere near enough drag for pans and tilts, especially at longer focal lengths.

Additionally, the drag tension for the pan and tilt seems to be set at different ammounts. This makes combination pan / tilt moves difficult to execute smoothly.

On the other hand, the new quick release system is excellent. It's much quicker than the older sliding plate mount design. The counterbalance works well too, although it still isn't enough for my camera.

I understand that the 502 has many of the features that are missing from this model and it isn't much more expensive. However, it weighs nearly twice as much, which is unacceptable for me.

I bought this to replace the Swarovski head which is pretty much garbage. This is more solid, better adjustments, I don't have to use the balance rail with it. Perfect!

I've used 500$ tripod heads and still love this one for [$]. Smooth, and very easy to use, nothing I don't like about it. Better movement and fluidity from the previous model, not to mention cheaper, huge improvement.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

I've been shooting stills for years but recently purchased a Nikon D7100 to finally explore new horizons with video so was looking for a nice tripod head (at a reasonable price) that smoothly pans for video and securely holds my new investment in place. I think I found it with the 500AH flat base. It screws on to most tripods, including my Manfrotto 3221WN and lighter Induro travel tripod, is a solid build and I purchased it with a mail-in rebate to boot. So far the 500AH seems like a win-win-win and based on approximately three weeks of use, I recommend it for up-in-coming DSLR video shooters like me.

This head works great. My tripod was all set up for still photography with a ball head. I started doing some video and found it very limiting. This head works great with Canon 5d ii and 70-200. So much more stability and nice smooth pan and tilt. I am very happy with the purchase.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

We purchased two of the AVH500AH flat base heads, one for use on a existing tripod, the other for use on an existing geared elevating rig mounted to the back of a pew in church. Normally I run the switcher, but I was the lone ranger for our Christmas concert and ended up running one camera for the 90 minute concert myself so I got a good feel for the new head. So nice to be able to balance the head so I didn't have to lock the tilt after every move. I used the head with an old lightweight DV camera, but we plan on using them with Canon XA25's starting next month. My only complaint is that the pan drag is not adjustable and I find it a bit heavy. The sliding plate is great for fine tuning the balance point.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

I needed a second fluid head and found the Manfrotto 701 no longer readily available. The closest I could come to it is the Manfrotto 500. It meets my needs for an excellent head that is on the smaller/lighter size. I use it with the Canon XA 20 camcorder. I'm happy.

I especially like the way the camera with quick release plate attached clamps onto the base. No more sliding in from the back. The screw-in lever that opens the base up to accept the plate doesn't look very sturdy, but I bought a replacement in the hardware store to carry in my bag in the event of breakage. So far no problem.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

I bought this head for travel, and it looks like it will do just fine. It is very light, the most important factor, fairly compact, and the detachable handle is short enough to fit easily inside a camera bag. I have attached it to an MeFoto Road Trip tripod and it seems nice and sturdy. As others have mentioned, the action is a little stiff, so I need to practice a move to see if I need to hold the (very light) tripod for added stability. However, I prefer some resistance to a move, since I tend to use slow pans and tilts anyway.Of course, it does not come with features that I would expect from higher end heads, such as balance and friction adjustments, etc. But I am not going to be able to easily take my Sachtler FSB-4 on a trip with me either. I needed this head to allow me to get some fluid moves when I am travelling, and perhaps when I am backpacking some distance. This fits the bill.

it's too soon to say anything so far. First when i got it I thought it was too big and I wanted to return. Then I researched and found out that this is the smallest of all fluid heads. So i fixed to my Manfrotto tripod and truly loved it. It feels solid and smooth to control. I still didn't use it but I think i will love it and going to keep it

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

The slide-out / click-in mounting plate on this tripod head has to be among the most confusing, frustrating and counterintuitive that I've ever used. It works, but there just has to be a more elegant solution than this, for mounting and dismounting the camera. The large knob on the side, for adjusting tilt is great, but the other controls for adjusting pan and for locking / unlocking the mounting plate are much smaller and harder to manipulate than the tilt knob. I've seen video heads with a more user-friendly design than this. Performance wise, movement in all directions is fairly smooth, and the counter-balance on the tilt is nice. Overall, it is just average.

It's lighter than the previous replacements of the 701hdv and I believe it's due to less aluminum frame in its build. The pan and tilt is exactly what I need for DSLR. Only downer is compatibility with previous 501pl plates. They work fine on this fluid head, but the plate it comes requires additional turns to loosen the lever to allow it to slide in.

Bought to shoot video on my slr - compact, well made and smooth operation would have been stellar if the release was part of the grip but those heads are more expensive. Very pleased with operation amd highly recommend

LOVE the snap in QR plate. I have a bunch of the other Manfrotto QR slide in types to top sliders, smaller tripods. etc and they're ok. But this is SOLID and FAST. The longer base makes balancing easier and the snap in function is so valuable, I sold all my other Manfrotto and Benro (s4) heads and went 100% to these for my light duty applications. Seems to handle the C100 better. The Benros were just too small and not as nice. About the only negative I'd give it is the pan lock bolt is pretty small. I sure hope it stands up the the bumps it'll get during use. It's almost flush with the base, so when put on larger platforms below (slider deck) the knob *barely* clears the base of the other device. But it does. Overall a stellar value. I bought three after my initial test.

the top locking clamp, combined with the plate notches to prevent it from slipping off are very helpful. It is a quality head, for a great price, allowing me to get great shots.
