The Manfrotto MVH500A Fluid Drag Video Head with MVT502AM Tripod and Carry Bag features a a fluid head with a wide platform to support the HDSLR form factor, and a 60 mm half ball for quick leveling without adjusting the legs. The head supports a maximum weight load of 11 pounds and has a built-in pre-set spring-loaded counterbalance of 5.3 pounds. It features a tilt range of -70°/+90° and it provides 360° panning rotation. The head also features a side lock system for the sliding QR plate, and an integrated bubble level.

The 2-stage tripod feature a 75 mm bowl and includes a 75 to 60 mm adapter so you can use the MVH500A head. The legs are individually adjustable, and feature a mid level spreader for stability on uneven ground. The minimum height of the tripod and head is just over two feet, for getting low angle shots, and the maximum height is just over 5 feet. The legs feature non-removable feet suitable for exteriors and interiors, and are gentle on delicate floors. The included padded carry bag makes transporting your tripod and head simple and easy.

Fluid Head

The wide camera platform provides support for DSLR cameras, making this head suitable for both camcorders and DSLR cameras.
The 60 mm half ball allows you to quickly level the head without having to readjust the legs. It also makes it simpler to create dutch angled shots without dangerously unbalancing the tripod.
The spring loaded counterbalance is fixed at 5.3 pounds, however the head supports 11 pounds, and the counterbalance will still provide assistance when using camera set ups heavier than 5.3 pounds.
Professional fluid cartridges provide fixed fluid drag in both the pan and tilt axes.
The head features a tilt range of 90 degrees forward and 70 degrees back, allowing you to tilt the camera straight down, and tilt it almost straight up.
The head pans through 360 degrees, allowing you to take long panoramic shots or spin the camera around on the head.
The side lock system allows the sliding QR plate to click into the head from above, instead of needing to be aligned and slid in from the back. This gives you the speed of a touch and go quick release with the balance adjustment capability of a sliding QR plate.
An integrated bubble level on the head aids you in quickly leveling the fluid head.
The included 500PLONG sliding QR plate also includes both a 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 camera tie down screws.
The head includes one pan bar, and features two pan bar mounting rosettes, one on each side of the head, for left or right handed operation. A second optional pan bar allows you to operate the head with two pan bars at the same time.
The Easy Link connector, is a 3/8"-16 threaded hole in the side of the head that allows you to easily mount accessories to the fluid head itself, and not the camera.

Tripod legs

Featuring a 75mm bowl for attaching a fluid head, a 75 to 60 mm adapter is included for using with the MVH500A head.
The tripod legs can support over 33 pounds, easily carrying the weight of the fluid head and camera. The closed length (without fluid head) is just over two feet, and has a height range of 22.4 to 56.5 inches and weighs only 4.3 pounds.
The legs are constructed out of oval aluminum tubes for strength and durability. Each leg can be independently raised and lowered when required.
The mid level spreader helps prevent instability that a ground level spreader can introduce when working on uneven surfaces.
Non removable rubber feet provide secure grip, and are gentle on delicate surfaces, such as interior floors.
An elastic leg strap helps keep the legs secured together during transportation and storage.

Padded Carry Bag

The padded carry bag, keeps your tripod and head together during storage or transport.

It's a good set of sticks for light weight cameras. Sturdy, quick and easy to setup, and smooth operating. No complaints on the legs at all.

The head is decent and the new release plate functionality is a lot better than previous versions. You do have to tighten the locking mechanisms a bit to really LOCK a shot, but overall it's not bad. Does take getting used to if you're more experienced with the 501 or 503 style heads. It's much more compact compared to those heads.

One big gripe is that this head doesn't quickly or easily become the "FLAT" version. Yes, you can disconnect the ball adapter, but you're still left with a half ball at the bottom with a threaded screw. Yes, you CAN connect it to another set of sticks without a bowl if needed, but I wouldn't recommend it for extended periods of use.

I was hoping to get double duty out of this head and use on a flat base slider and other applications. I'll look into a small bowl adapter, but likely would end up being cheaper to buy an additional head... mostly because an additional quick release plate is HALF THE PRICE OF THE HEAD. Seems insane and haven't purchased one, unfortunately. Hopefully the 3rd party market will pickup on this and make some cheaper plates.

The bag it comes with felt quite cheap compared to other Manfrotto bags I've used in the past. The original one out of the box arrived with a tear and B&H replaced it. Hopefully the replacement will hold up. If not, I'll look into other bags.

The pan arm doesn't fit well in bag when attached to the collapsed tripod. You can make it fit, but it's extremely snug. Again, may be looking into other bags at some point.

Build quality I'd have to put at mediocre due to much plastic throughout the design, especially on the legs. But I guess that translates into this being a pretty light tripod, which is a plus.

I've used a lot of tripods and for the price this is an excellent tripod. It's durable and has a good fluid head. I'm using this tripod with my Canon 7D and I'm very happy with it thus far. I think it will last a very long time.

Having previously owned this set of sticks at a previous company, I wasn't going to deviate from this tried-and-true performer. Very satisfied with the sticks, and the 502 head is a solid performer for the price. If you're producing low- to mid-range client videos, internal communication pieces, or short documentaries, this is a rugged, reliable tripod system. Can't go wrong with this setup!

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500A Fluid Drag Video Head with MVT502AM Tripod and Carry Bag:

I purchased this for my wildlife scope but can use it with my DSLR Camera and my Handycam too. I needed a tripod that would let me follow an eagle across the sky, to watch an egret catch a fish and then fly off or to follow a coyote walking along the tree line looking for his next meal. The fluid head of this unit provides me this capability; the 360° panning rotation is perfect to follow the animals that I love to watch. The head maneuvers fluently; no "bumpy" viewing like I have when I hold the scope by hand and the long pan bar makes my movement slow and steady. The tripod needed to be adjustable so I can sit in a chair or stand to view the local wildlife. The 2-stage feature provides me just what I needed. The tripod will go as low as 2 feet to 5 feet and the legs can be adjusted independently which is nice when I'm on uneven ground. All of the features are easy to use: knobs are user friendly, latches easy to open and close. The detachable plate is great! I can remove the scope with the quick release, pack everything up (in the carrying case) and head out to another favorite wildlife viewing destination. So far, I have not found anything about this unit that I do not like.

I use this product for regular one to one interviews for short videos. What I really like about it is how fast and easy it is to set up and make a adjustments. I primarily use DSLRS for the interviews so I am not a big fan of the big plate, but I think that is just a personal preference. The one thing I didn't really like was how small the carrying case is and its construction. The fabric seems a light and like it might rip if you pull on the strap too hard. You definitely get what you pay for tripods and this is no exception.

For $ it is hard to find a better deal. The MVH500 head was the main reason I purchased this as I already had one and wanted a ball head. The tripod is light but at the cost of sturdiness. It is a very good height for weddings, my main fear with switching to a ball head was the lack of center column but it seems to be fine.

There is no doubt that anything with the Manfrotto name on it is reliable and built to last, even their low end products. I am always amazed at the quality and I will only own Manfrotto tripods from here on out.

very pleased with this tripod: great functionality and ease of use. For a tripod that is not very expensive, you can feel the sturdiness when it's in your hands. Definitely recommend this product and thanks to b&h for the prompt delivery

very light weight and compact, but not sturdy enough. should be cheaper or should be better built. for a couple more bucks you can get a sachtler ace that is so much more bang for the buck.

After having my Bescor tripod break on me it was time for a new one. I figured a Manfrotto would be out of my price range but this one is really fair. I have used much pricier Manfrottos and I didn't notice much difference in the quality of the fluid head between this one. Really smooth pans and the legs are easy to use and adapt to funny surfaces such as banked slopes and tight nooks and crannies. This unit is very light which is a blessing and a curse. With my DSLR it's no problem but with my HVX I sometimes have to hold the legs to avoid having them slip due to the cameras weight. That's easily solvable by placing a sand bag on a leg. Love this thing.

As an amateur photographer and videographer, I've had a hard time budgeting and figuring out what investements into my gear are worth it. I've usually resorted to renting equipment for work or my own personal projects and it's all worked out since I've been able to find really affordable pricing for otherwise ridiculously priced gear. For many years I've been using a "Hollywood Junior" tripod that I bought in a garage sale for $ bucks. It's been with me ever since and it got the job done. Until recently it was my only tripod, so you would see a brand new Canon 5d Miii on a $ photo tripod that's at least 20 years old. I realized that inorder to get more out of my equipment and to get better shots and panning and safer positioning set-ups, I needed to make an invest into a reliable video tripod. This Manfrotto was the best choice and for the best price, it comes with the trusted brand name and it is sturdy, versatile, and reliable. I use it with shooting stills and/or video. I also hook up my gopro to get steady time-lapses. It's got a great max height which is more than enough for any interviews or setups that require you getting higher and the head is very smooth both up and down and panning left to right. When money is tight and yet you wanna increase your works production value this tripod for the budget filmmaker will get the job done and more. You will not regret it, so upgrade today!
