18MP CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 5 Image Processor
High resolution, low-noise imaging and fast performance speed, including 4 fps continuous shooting, is provided by the combination of the Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor and 18MP CMOS sensor.
3.0" Clear View II Touchscreen LCD Monitor
A 3.0" Clear View II Touchscreen LCD monitor with 1,040k-dot resolution provides clear composition and playback viewing even in bright light. Its smudge-resistant coating keeps the monitor clear. The touchscreen features multi-touch operation with direct access to functions for setting changes and provides Touch Autofocus. Seven brightness levels are available for better viewing depending on lighting conditions.
Full HD 1080 Video Capture
Full HD Movie mode supports Movie Servo for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects during recording. When shooting video with one of Canon's STM lenses, Movie Servo AF takes advantage of the lens' stepping motor (STM) for smooth and quiet continuous autofocus. Manual exposure settings provide complete control over your shooting, and multiple frame rates and resolutions provide quality-level and stylistic shooting options. The ISO range in Video mode is 100-6400, and is expandable to 12800. Stills can be recorded during video shooting simply by pressing the camera's shutter button. The in-camera microphone records in mono however an external stereo microphone jack is also available.
Compact Form Factor
The Rebel SL1 is a particularly compact and lightweight DSLR, weighing approximately 13 oz.
9-point Autofocus System
A 9-point AF system (including a high-precision dual-cross center point) provides fast and accurate autofocus performance when shooting with the viewfinder. The Center AF point is AF cross-type at f/5.6, Center AF point is vertical line-sensitive at f/2.8.
Hybrid CMOS AF II
The Hybrid CMOS AF System is utilized when shooting photos and video in Live View. Combining two different kinds of AF-phase and contrast detection-continuous focus tracking becomes faster and more accurate than ever before in Live View. Hybrid CMOS AF II boasts an increased AF area (compared to Hybrid CMOS AF) that covers approximately 80% of the sensor for easier composition.
ISO Range
An ISO Range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) provides low-noise capture in low light situations and saturated colors in bright conditions.
Continuous Shooting
The Rebel SL1 offers continuous shooting rates of 4 fps for up to 7 consecutive RAW files or 28 full resolution JPEG files.
Video Snapshot
With the Video Snapshot feature, the SL1 captures short video clips (of 2, 4 or 8 seconds) and combines them automatically into one video file as a snapshot or highlights album. With no editing needed after shooting, the compiled video is perfect for sharing online or displaying directly on an HDTV via the camera's HDMI port.
Optical Viewfinder
The SL1 features an Optical Viewfinder with 0.87x magnification. Shooting with the optical viewfinder ensures steadier images and is effective when shooting in bright conditions when shooting rapidly. The viewfinder displays exposure, AF, flash, plus other relevant image information right along with the image. Depth Of Field Preview is supported and enabled by pushing the depth-of-field preview button.
Scene Intelligent Auto
Scene Intelligent Auto Mode automatically delivers optimally adjusted photos and offers improved scene detection for better results when shooting at night.
Special Scene Modes
Special Scene Modes including Kids, Food and Candlelight give you advanced presets to ensure the best possible photos under difficult shooting conditions.
Creative Filters
Creative Filters add expressive touches to your images, and can be seen in real time when shooting in Live View. Seven different creative filters are available: Art Bold Effect, Water Painting Effect, Miniature Effect, Fisheye Effect, Grainy B/W, Soft Focus and Toy Camera Effect. Each effect can be applied in three different levels (low, standard and strong). Miniature Effect is also available in Movie mode.
Effect Shot Mode and Background Simulation
The Effect Shot feature automatically captures two shots simultaneously: one without effect, and one with a Picture Style or Creative Filter effect. This makes it easy to see how each effect changes the photo without compromising the original image. Effect Shot mode is available in both Live View and viewfinder shooting, and can be viewed immediately in playback mode. Background Simulation, which makes it easy for beginners to achieve dramatic blurred or sharpened backgrounds. The image is previewed on the LCD screen so you can see in advance how the final image will look.
Lens Compatibility
The Canon Rebel SL1 is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses.
Lens Aberration Correction
The SL1 features lens correction tools that compensate for specific lens characteristics that can affect image quality. Peripheral Illumination Correction adjusts light falloff in the corner of an image based on the type of lens being used. It has correction data for a number of popular lenses stored in its memory. With the chromatic aberration correction tool distracting color fringing can be corrected at the time of shooting.
JPEG Resizing and In-camera Cropping
For images easier to email, the SL1 can resize JPEG files in-camera, while leaving the original image untouched. And because the SL1 creates large 18MP images, in-camera cropping creates files large enough for direct printing or other purposes. You can choose vertical or horizontal images, and 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, even 1:1 aspect ratios.
Photobook Set-up
Photobook Set-up feature allows you to share you images in book form. Users can easily choose specific images, images in a folder and even all images, then specify their sequence and layout. The results can be printed in book form with ease.
Optional GPS Compatibility
With the optional GPS Receiver GP-E2 attached to the hot shoe or the digital terminal, the SL1 can record location, including latitude, longitude and altitude, and has the ability to track the trajectory of movement with its logging function. An electronic compass records the camera's orientation during each shot, and world time information is recorded through GPS syncing.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

With canon 40mm pancake lens, this is the smallest DSLR-lens combination in the world while keeping the image quality as good as larger products such as 650D. The responsiveness and the image quality of the LCD display makes the adjustments an easy task. If size and weight is important for you (it is for me) with high image quality, this camera is one of the best choices.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I use this professionally as a macro camera. It is much more user friendly than another (big name) camera that I own. It was SO lightweight - before I added the heavy (non-Canon) lens. I used both cameras at the same photo shoot and found the photos from the SL1 to be more vivid than my other camera. It's very easy to use, the menu is set up so I can easily find what I'm looking for, and the touch screen is awesome! I love this camera and I'd recommend it for personal and professional use. (I have not used the video yet)

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The same power from its bigger brother (T5i), in a smaller body. Compact and excellent to use as a backup since fits most modern Canon lenses. Only complain is that the grip could be bigger without altering the overall size.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I am a pro photographer and wanted a lightweight camera for international travel. WOW!! This camera has blown me away!! I purchased body only, having plenty of lenses on hand. Every lens I put on this camera seems enhanced even more than my high dollar cameras! Extremely sharp detailed photos! Vivid color. Tons and tons of user friendly options built in, many automatic settings that are awesome if you're in a hurry. Extremely easy to access everything, especially with the touch screen! Wish my high end cameras had such easy access at just a touch! I put an old 55-250 kit lens on that I had laying around. I have never, honestly, had that lens perform with the quality it gave on this body! I cannot say enough good things about this wonderfully small, lightweight camera! I can add my heavy lenses and only have half the weight I would have had without compromising photo quality. I'm sitting here having a hard time thinking of what ISN'T great about it...any problems I have had have been the result of the learning curve, not the camera! I guess perhaps there are times that my expensive lenses search longer than normal for focus. (I had previously purchased, and returned the T5i, due to lower quality photos...no comparison to this camera, in my honest opinion)

This was a gift to my 14 year old granddaughter as her first DSLR. I had a couple EF lenses for her to use as she gets familiar with it. What a blast. Her poor cat is becoming blind from the flash. When she starts her photography class in the fall she'll probably have shot 10,000 exposures. It does have everything!

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This little camera may not "impress", but while other people are getting cramps dragging around their hulking big and heavy cameras, you will be getting shots as good or better than they are with this small, lightweight beauty. I have had the pro level Canon cameras, including the 1Ds and the 5D MkII. I actually like this little shooter better than any of them. Use it with the pancake 40mm lens and you have an amazing device that is a joy to use all day long. My ONLY wish was that it had a little cleaner images at high ISO, but it is totally clean at 800 and usable at 1600 at moderate size prints. Any higher ISO and quality does suffer, so try to keep the ISO to 800 and under and you will be very pleased with this camera.

This camera is hardly larger and heavier than most point and shoot cameras - but the image quality is light years ahead, the manual controls are the equal of more expensive DSLRs and yet - you can use it on full program, too.

A great camera that proves good things come in small packages

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Long time user of Canon camreas and lenses, this camera is perfect for my needs. As Canon says, 'world's smallest and lightest dslr.' It travels very well yet is comfortable in my large, man hands. This camera has great features including HD video. It runs w/ a standard HD memory card. (The camera ships w/ a 16gb card, which gives you almost 2200 shots, on high settings.)It has all of the great features I've come to expect from Canon. Definitely worth checking out!!!

They say that the best camera is the one you carry with you.
This is a small camera but great for bring with you. Pick a lens that will make it bulky.

I have 2 Canon Eos 5D MKIII and this one is for my wife. She loves it. I would use it too - if it was not for work.
For the price of the body, you can't go wrong.

I am using this great Canon SL1 DSLR to learn photography. Having used a Canon G9 for over 5 years I wanted a camera whose lens I could change and whose settings I could manipulate to get that perfect shot. The Canon SL1 meets that criteria and more. The camera is small, portable, and light weight. Most importantly, it takes a great photograph. I would high recommend it.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This camera is my first foray into the DSLR world, after owning several point and shoot digital cameras. I must say, so far it has been a blast. It's easy to use and the quality of the pictures is fantastic. Several shots I've taken of surrounding flora look almost fake because of the clarity of the pictures. I haven't delved into the more complicated features just yet, but I'll get there soon. One of the main reasons I chose this camera is for the touch screen display, which I love. I think anyone with a smart phone will love it, too. I'd definitely recommend the SL-1.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I wanted to reduce the weight and bulk I carry on photo outings, to birthday parties, grandkids' softball games, live stage performances, and generally all the time. My requirements were fairly minimal otherwise. Originally, I was looking to mirrorless, but Canon hasn't figured out that even mirrorless cameras need eye level viewfinders, so the EOS-M was out.

What a surprise! This camera is fantastic. I have the original digital Rebel, 20D, 40D, 5DMk2 and 7D to compare to, so I have a fair idea what Canon DSLRs can do. This is 90%, and that's more than enough.

I've used it on several outings now with a Sigma 18-200, Canon 50mm 1.4, Canon 35mm F2, Canon 85mm 1.8, Canon 100-400, Canon 70-200 F2.8, Canon 300mm F2.8, Canon 500mm F4, and my great surprise lens--the Sigma 8-16mm ultrawide. No disappointments with any of them.

The camera has a few less features than the 7D, including no micro-adjust AF. It also is slow in continuous shooting, but I never really did that anyway (you know...those annoying people at bird sanctuaries shooting 50 frames at a time.)

One suggestion for anyone who might shoot video with this camera: Get the kit with the STM lens. Even with my external microphone and vibration-isolating holder, I pick up AF noise shooting video.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The camera is perfect for personal uses and hobby. It is unbelievable small and light! Nevertheless, it is easy to use, the grip in not awkward at all. The reasons I am giving it four stars are the built in flash not acting as a master and the AF system with only on cross-type sensor. Otherwise, it is a perfect camera! Put a 40/2.8 pancake on it and it is almost pocketeable.

I had a EOS-M camera before, and the absence of an optical viewfinder annoys me. So glad Canon gave us this SL1 alternative!

The touch screen LCD is a pleasant bonus! It is very responsive, and is nice to zoom the pictures with the fingers. Also, it compensates a little the absence of a secondary dial.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this as a stop gap until Canon learns to make the next generation of cameras: high quality mirrorless with EVF. As it turned out, it's a fine camera compared to the big and chunky 7D and 5D2 that also live in our house. I even bought the Sigma 8-16mm ultrawide so it would have all the capabilities of the full frame.

Comparing price, size, weight and capabilities, with other Canon DSLRs, this camera is a wonder. I did some test comparison shots with the SL1 and the 7D with the 50mm F1.4, 24-105, 14mm F2.8 and the Sigma 8-16. ISO from 100-800, I could tell no difference. Some might find call the full-auto frame rate slow. I don't shoot that way, so it doesn't matter to me.

Video does well, and it's easier to do than with the 5D2 or 7D. I did have to modify my Hoodman crane to fit, as its lowest setting was still too tall for this little camera. The live view full time autofocus during video is good, and with the Hoodman crane and an external mic, it's not a bad video camera at all. I've not taxed the battery yet with long sessions, but for the typical kids in the park stuff, it is more than OK.

Bottom line. As an only DSLR, I see no problem with this camera. In fact, my wife and I used to switch off with the 5D2 and 7D. Now I tell her just keep both bodies. I have my own.

I bought this camera both as a backup for my new Canon 70D body and to use with my 40mm pancake lens. Because of it's lightweight size, I've been using it much more than I ever expected. Very handy to use with my 24-105mm zoom lens. Great camera!

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I purchased the Rebel SL1 as a back up to my other, larger Canon DSLR.The size is convenient to carry along anywhere and features are comparable to the more expensive models. The ability to use and interchange lenses with the other camera makes it a win win
