The EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only) from Canon is a lightweight APS-C format digital SLR camera with an 18MP CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 image processor. It provides sharp details, accurate colors and low-noise imaging in compact form factor with an easy to use interface. A 9-point autofocus system provides fast focusing when shooting with the viewfinder and Hybrid CMOS AF II increases autofocus speed and accuracy when shooting in Live View. The Rebel SL1 can continuously shoot up to 4 fps, and its wide ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) allows for confident shooting in bright and low light situations.

A 3.0" Clear View II Touchscreen LCD with 1,040k-dot resolution provides composition and playback viewing. Its intuitive touchscreen operation includes multi-touch operation with direct access to functions for settings changes and Touch Autofocus. Smudge-resistant coating keeps the monitor clear, even in bright sunlight. An optical viewfinder with 0.87x magnification is also available for stable eye-level composition.

Full HD 1080p at 30 fps and 24 fps is supported with Movie Servo for continuous autofocus during shooting. Manual exposure is provided in video mode and 60 fps is possible when shooting at 720p HD. A built-in mono microphone with manual audio level adjustment is provided, and Video Snapshot with editing is supported.

Scene Intelligent Auto Mode automatically makes the optimal camera adjustments based on scene recognition, and improved scene detection is particularly helpful when shooting night scenes. Advanced imaging features such as Effect Shot mode and background Simulation are available and Creative Filters add expressive touches to your images and can even be viewed in real time during Live View shooting. Special Scene Modes including Kids, Food and Candlelight let you set the type of shot you want and have the camera do the rest.

The EOS Rebel SL1 utilizes SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards including Ultra High Speed UHS-I cards and is compatible with the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses.

18MP CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 5 Image Processor
High resolution, low-noise imaging and fast performance speed, including 4 fps continuous shooting, is provided by the combination of the Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor and 18MP CMOS sensor.
3.0" Clear View II Touchscreen LCD Monitor
A 3.0" Clear View II Touchscreen LCD monitor with 1,040k-dot resolution provides clear composition and playback viewing even in bright light. Its smudge-resistant coating keeps the monitor clear. The touchscreen features multi-touch operation with direct access to functions for setting changes and provides Touch Autofocus. Seven brightness levels are available for better viewing depending on lighting conditions.
Full HD 1080 Video Capture
Full HD Movie mode supports Movie Servo for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects during recording. When shooting video with one of Canon's STM lenses, Movie Servo AF takes advantage of the lens' stepping motor (STM) for smooth and quiet continuous autofocus. Manual exposure settings provide complete control over your shooting, and multiple frame rates and resolutions provide quality-level and stylistic shooting options. The ISO range in Video mode is 100-6400, and is expandable to 12800. Stills can be recorded during video shooting simply by pressing the camera's shutter button. The in-camera microphone records in mono however an external stereo microphone jack is also available.
Compact Form Factor
The Rebel SL1 is a particularly compact and lightweight DSLR, weighing approximately 13 oz.
9-point Autofocus System
A 9-point AF system (including a high-precision dual-cross center point) provides fast and accurate autofocus performance when shooting with the viewfinder. The Center AF point is AF cross-type at f/5.6, Center AF point is vertical line-sensitive at f/2.8.
Hybrid CMOS AF II
The Hybrid CMOS AF System is utilized when shooting photos and video in Live View. Combining two different kinds of AF-phase and contrast detection-continuous focus tracking becomes faster and more accurate than ever before in Live View. Hybrid CMOS AF II boasts an increased AF area (compared to Hybrid CMOS AF) that covers approximately 80% of the sensor for easier composition.
ISO Range
An ISO Range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) provides low-noise capture in low light situations and saturated colors in bright conditions.
Continuous Shooting
The Rebel SL1 offers continuous shooting rates of 4 fps for up to 7 consecutive RAW files or 28 full resolution JPEG files.
Video Snapshot
With the Video Snapshot feature, the SL1 captures short video clips (of 2, 4 or 8 seconds) and combines them automatically into one video file as a snapshot or highlights album. With no editing needed after shooting, the compiled video is perfect for sharing online or displaying directly on an HDTV via the camera's HDMI port.
Optical Viewfinder
The SL1 features an Optical Viewfinder with 0.87x magnification. Shooting with the optical viewfinder ensures steadier images and is effective when shooting in bright conditions when shooting rapidly. The viewfinder displays exposure, AF, flash, plus other relevant image information right along with the image. Depth Of Field Preview is supported and enabled by pushing the depth-of-field preview button.
Scene Intelligent Auto
Scene Intelligent Auto Mode automatically delivers optimally adjusted photos and offers improved scene detection for better results when shooting at night.
Special Scene Modes
Special Scene Modes including Kids, Food and Candlelight give you advanced presets to ensure the best possible photos under difficult shooting conditions.
Creative Filters
Creative Filters add expressive touches to your images, and can be seen in real time when shooting in Live View. Seven different creative filters are available: Art Bold Effect, Water Painting Effect, Miniature Effect, Fisheye Effect, Grainy B/W, Soft Focus and Toy Camera Effect. Each effect can be applied in three different levels (low, standard and strong). Miniature Effect is also available in Movie mode.
Effect Shot Mode and Background Simulation
The Effect Shot feature automatically captures two shots simultaneously: one without effect, and one with a Picture Style or Creative Filter effect. This makes it easy to see how each effect changes the photo without compromising the original image. Effect Shot mode is available in both Live View and viewfinder shooting, and can be viewed immediately in playback mode. Background Simulation, which makes it easy for beginners to achieve dramatic blurred or sharpened backgrounds. The image is previewed on the LCD screen so you can see in advance how the final image will look.
Lens Compatibility
The Canon Rebel SL1 is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses.
Lens Aberration Correction
The SL1 features lens correction tools that compensate for specific lens characteristics that can affect image quality. Peripheral Illumination Correction adjusts light falloff in the corner of an image based on the type of lens being used. It has correction data for a number of popular lenses stored in its memory. With the chromatic aberration correction tool distracting color fringing can be corrected at the time of shooting.
JPEG Resizing and In-camera Cropping
For images easier to email, the SL1 can resize JPEG files in-camera, while leaving the original image untouched. And because the SL1 creates large 18MP images, in-camera cropping creates files large enough for direct printing or other purposes. You can choose vertical or horizontal images, and 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, even 1:1 aspect ratios.
Photobook Set-up
Photobook Set-up feature allows you to share you images in book form. Users can easily choose specific images, images in a folder and even all images, then specify their sequence and layout. The results can be printed in book form with ease.
Optional GPS Compatibility
With the optional GPS Receiver GP-E2 attached to the hot shoe or the digital terminal, the SL1 can record location, including latitude, longitude and altitude, and has the ability to track the trajectory of movement with its logging function. An electronic compass records the camera's orientation during each shot, and world time information is recorded through GPS syncing.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have been working with EOS1Dx's and 1Ds's since 2002. They are my bread and butter. For my carry-around camera, I've tried the little Olympus X10-20-30, and the Sony X100's. I've TRIED to like them, but the trade off in speed and image quality is a huge gap. The reviews were positive on the SL1, so I bought it at B&H, bundled with the EF40mm2.8 pancake. All I can say is wow!
The proof is plugging the SD card into the laptop and dropping my jaw. Image quality is simply amazing, compared to ANYTHING. I could make my living off from this camera and lens alone. Yes, it's plastic....and that makes it lighter and stronger. The touch screen is amazing...better than an iPhone! I thought this would be a cheap toy.....right up to the first 1000 photos....now I think its one of photography's best bargains anywhere. This camera makes photography FUN!

Perfect

By Lauren

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This was my first DSLR, I was looking for something simple to use but yet very effective in the quality. I have a friend that is a professtional photographer that helped me along the way and we came to this one its been an awesome camera. Its lightweight and easy to use, and its small frame makes it not too bulky. The quality of the images have been fantastic as I'm learning, and the live view makes it easy to see the setting as you go along. So glad I chose this one!

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I mainly shoot with my 5Ds, but I needed a smaller body for some experimental street photography. This little SL1 has been an amazing addition to my collection of gear. It's super-light, small, quiet, and focuses quick with an assortment of lenses.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I got this body as an alternative to lugging my heavy Canon 50D on vacations. This weighs significantly less and is a bit less conspicuous. I get very usable images from this body with my existing Canon lenses (24-105L, 17-55, 50, 40 and 25). It is not going to be as good as a 5D, 6D, or 7D, but for the amateur hobbyist with the ability to shoot in Manual and RAW, it is an excellent choice. Added benefit is HD video, though this takes some getting used to as the camera works a bit to find its focal points. The STM lenses make a difference with focus noise. But good video will take some practice. Overall, highly recommended for the right purpose with the right expectations.

Works very well, takes good quality pictures and video for prosumer purposes. Great for the price. Some of the menu navigation can be tedious though, and not having a physical button/dial for aperture is annoying.

It's my first DSLR. I'm reading the manual about how to begin shooting movies.
B&H has very helpful videos about all that kind of stuff. The delivery came fast, and in perfect condition across 3000 miles.

I'll be able to give a better review after I try my first project! I'm psyched to have an audio in and manual options for movies!

              Discreet street camera

              By Steven

              from San Francisco

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Bought this paired with a 40mm pancake. Street photos are a little easier to shoot now. Some don't notice it. Those who do usually don't care, they just assume I'm a tourist.

This camera shines with a small lens for mobility as it weighs next to nothing. Paired with a larger lens it starts to feel more like a t4i without an articulated screen.

If you want something for video, this camera is capable but not ideal. An articulated screen is a huge convenience you shouldn't ignore.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

There was something missing in my Canon assembly of cameras and lenses and the EOS Rebel SL1 turned out to be that something. I needed a true DSLR that would accept my array of Canon lenses but have a smaller body than my other Canon cameras. Now I have it from good old B&H.

The SL1 fits right into the palms of my big hand and my shutter finger is always poised just right over that button. The photos I take with the camera as fine and sometimes better than the ones I take with my other Canon cameras.

I do miss the articulated LED that I have on, for example, my Rebel T3i's. But the LED that is at the back of the SL1 is big and beautiful.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I just ordered this camera last Thursday and received it promptly on Monday as expected. So first and foremost, kudos to the folks at B&H for shipping my product on time and in great condition.

I mainly use this camera to take photos for a client for publication on their website. The subjects can range from students in a classroom to a basketball game. My old camera, a Rebel XSi, was not great with low-light photography. I've only used the SL1 for a few days, but already notice a great improvement in the quality of both low-light and action shots.

The camera is very light and small, which I also appreciate. I have small hands, so for me, it's a perfect fit. I can see where a man or someone with larger hands might have difficulty holding it comfortably, though.

I was able to use all of my existing lenses with this camera, so that was another plus.

So far, I'm not seeing much of a down side to this camera. If you're a professional photographer, this camera is most definitely not sophisticated enough for your needs. But for those of us who are using a camera recreationally or just occasionally, it more than fits the bill.

I researched a lot of cameras before purchasing the Canon EOS SL1. It fits perfectly in my hands. It accommodates other lenses. Very easy to use. Included software and online tutorial make it fun to learn how to use it in manual mode. B&H was great to order and return. I would order again from them and highly recommend anyone else to order with confidence.

I bought this product primarily to take candid photos of my family as well as portraits of our two children as well as our family together.

This camera is fast, durable, quiet, and comfortable to hold. I've always loved Canons. My last camera was a 60D and this one outperforms it in many ways.

Updated my EOS 30D. Wonderful improvements .. like going from a flip phone to a smartphone. The chromatic aberration correction for all of my Canon lenses is a plus. My old Canon film camera remote and cable work on the SL1, takes great pictures in the program mode for me, my wife took great pictures in the auto mode (you should change the the auto ISO MAX to 400 for less grainy results). The small size is of the SL1 is perfect. The programmable options are outstanding. B&H delivered on time as ususal

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this because I needed something small and light to get more use out of my Canon EF lens collection. The image is deceptive. You need to look carefully at how much of the front of the camera the lens mount takes up in the photographs. When I got the box I was disappointed in how big the box was. Then I opened it and had to dig about a bit to find the camera body. It is quite small and very light.

Surprisingly it is not that ugly with the 40 mm pancake lens on it and it seems to love that lens. The controls are of course shoved around and pushed together, but it is Canon for sure. The fingers found everything after just a bit of experience and in no time I was changing settings without removing my eye from the finder as you should be able to on a Canon with its nice ergonomics. It fit in the hands surprisingly well! The initial images are very impressive and even with it set to shoot RAWS in Neutral they were crisp and "Canon like".

It is a fat little spud and with the 40 mm pancake mount it is not going to win any beauty contests but it seems to belong together and the main thing is the way it fits the hands and how much fun it is to shoot. With the pancake lens it hangs on the strap perfectly waiting to be used. The 40 mm is a bit long in the focal length however.

Overall it is just what I was hoping for, a light weight option for some of my smaller Canon lenses to create a constant carry around type camera from a system I have already invested in. And in spite of the compacting the fingers think it retained the essential Canon controls. The isolated ISO set button is especially handy as I shoot a lot of AP and using ISO to help determine shutter speed is very important to me. So a simple method of doing an ISO reset quickly by feel is nice.

The battery is more G series than EOS series and the second one is a bit pricey. But I have had bad experiences with third party camera batteries and never had a problem with the Canon factory ones so I just forked over for a second one.

The only thing I did not like was the bright red Canon strap. Forgive me. I put on a Sony Alpha black strap I had which was less conspicuous...

The camera produces brilliant images straight out of the camera. The in camera software and menus are easy and straight forward to use. For a small camera, there are the right buttons and dials for experienced photographers for full and quick control over the camera operation. Plus there are useful auto settings on the top dial. There is an ISO button next to the front function wheel. There are also exposure lock and exposure compensation buttons on the rear. It even has a depth-of-field preview button! Plus lens correction data built in.There is also a handy built in flash that works great for fill flash. The rear LCD is bright and accurate and also a touch screen, which I have now become accustomed to using and it well laid out. There is live-view which is activated by a button on the rear and also allows different image aspect rations to be used. There is also an adjustable viewfinder diopter.I am using an older EF 35mm f/2 lens on the camera and the EF 50mm f/1.8 II. This is a responsive camera that produces wonderful, high resolution images. It is so light to carry and I am so happy with this purchase.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera (Body Only):
