The black EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens from Canon is a lightweight APS-C format digital SLR camera with an 18MP CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 image processor. It is combined with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens for an effective range of wide-angle to standard focal length shooting options.

The EOS SL1 provides sharp details, accurate colors and low-noise imaging in compact form factor with easy to use interface. A 9-point autofocus system provides fast focusing when shooting with the viewfinder and Hybrid CMOS AF II increases autofocus speed and accuracy when shooting in Live View. The Rebel SL1 can continuously shoot up to 4 fps and its wide ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) allows for confident shooting in bright and low light situations.

A 3.0" Clear View II touchscreen LCD with 1,040k-dot resolution provides composition and playback viewing. Its intuitive touchscreen operation includes multi-touch operation with direct access to functions for settings changes and Touch Autofocus. Smudge-resistant coating keeps the monitor clear, even in bright sunlight. An optical viewfinder with 0.87x magnification is also available for stable eye-level composition.

Full HD 1080p at 30 fps and 24 fps is supported with Movie Servo for continuous autofocus during shooting. Manual exposure is provided in video mode and 60 fps is possible when shooting at 720p HD. A built-in mono microphone with manual audio level adjustment is provided, and Video Snapshot with editing is supported.

Scene Intelligent Auto Mode automatically makes the optimal camera adjustments based on scene recognition and improved scene detection is particularly helpful when shooting night scenes. Advanced imaging features such as Effect Shot mode and background Simulation are available and Creative Filters add expressive touches to your images and can even be viewed in real time during Live View shooting. It is paired here with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens which offers wide-angle to standard length shooting capability specifically designed for APS-C cameras. It is equivalent to a 28.8-88mm focal length in the 35mm format and its minimum focus distance is 9.8". This lens features Canon's Optical Image Stabilization system, providing 4-stops of compensation against the blur caused by slow shutter speeds when shooting hand-held in low light or at longer focal lengths. An internal focusing system provides fast autofocus and with a Stepping Motor (STM) and six group zoom system it supports the Rebel SL1's Movie Servo AF feature for smooth and quiet continuous autofocus during video recording. Manual focus override is possible. A high precision aspherical lens reduces chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range for sharp imaging and Canon lens coatings provide accurate color balance and minimal ghosting and flare.

Manual exposure settings provide complete control over your shooting, and multiple frame rates and resolutions provide quality-level and stylistic shooting options. The ISO range in Video mode is 100-6400, and is expandable to 12800. Stills can be recorded during video shooting simply by pressing the camera's shutter button. The in-camera microphone records in mono however an external stereo microphone jack is also available.
Compact Form Factor
The Rebel SL1 is a particularly compact and lightweight DSLR, weighing approximately 13 oz.
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens
The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens offers wide-angle to standard length shooting capability specifically designed for APS-C cameras.
Lens Compatibility
The Canon Rebel SL1 is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses.
9-point Autofocus System
A 9-point AF system (including a high-precision dual-cross center point) provides fast and accurate autofocus performance when shooting with the viewfinder. The Center AF point is AF cross-type at f/5.6, Center AF point is vertical line-sensitive at f/2.8.
Hybrid CMOS AF II
The Hybrid CMOS AF System is utilized when shooting photos and video in Live View. Combining two different kinds of AF-phase and contrast detection-continuous focus tracking becomes faster and more accurate than ever before in Live View. Hybrid CMOS AF II boasts an increased AF area (compared to Hybrid CMOS AF) that covers approximately 80% of the sensor for easier composition.
ISO Range
An ISO Range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) provides low-noise capture in low light situations and saturated colors in bright conditions.
Continuous Shooting
The Rebel SL1 offers continuous shooting rates of 4 fps for up to 7 consecutive RAW files or 28 full resolution JPEG files.
Video Snapshot
With the Video Snapshot feature, the SL1 captures short video clips (of 2, 4 or 8 seconds) and combines them automatically into one video file as a snapshot or highlights album. With no editing needed after shooting, the compiled video is perfect for sharing online or displaying directly on an HDTV via the camera's HDMI port.
Optical Viewfinder
The SL1 features an Optical Viewfinder with 0.87x magnification. Shooting with the optical viewfinder ensures steadier images and is effective when shooting in bright conditions when shooting rapidly. The viewfinder displays exposure, AF, flash, plus other relevant image information right along with the image. Depth Of Field Preview is supported and enabled by pushing the depth-of-field preview button.
Scene Intelligent Auto
Scene Intelligent Auto Mode automatically delivers optimally adjusted photos and offers improved scene detection for better results when shooting at night.
Special Scene Modes
Special Scene Modes including Kids, Food and Candlelight give you advanced presets to ensure the best possible photos under difficult shooting conditions.
Creative Filters
Creative Filters add expressive touches to your images, and can be seen in real time when shooting in Live View. Seven different creative filters are available: Art Bold Effect, Water Painting Effect, Miniature Effect, Fisheye Effect, Grainy B/W, Soft Focus and Toy Camera Effect. Each effect can be applied in three different levels (low, standard and strong). Miniature Effect is also available in Movie mode.
Effect Shot Mode and Background Simulation
The Effect Shot feature automatically captures two shots simultaneously: one without effect, and one with a Picture Style or Creative Filter effect. This makes it easy to see how each effect changes the photo without compromising the original image. Effect Shot mode is available in both Live View and viewfinder shooting, and can be viewed immediately in playback mode. Background Simulation, which makes it easy for beginners to achieve dramatic blurred or sharpened backgrounds. The image is previewed on the LCD screen so you can see in advance how the final image will look.
Lens Aberration Correction
The SL1 features lens correction tools that compensate for specific lens characteristics that can affect image quality. Peripheral Illumination Correction adjusts light falloff in the corner of an image based on the type of lens being used. It has correction data for a number of popular lenses stored in its memory. With the chromatic aberration correction tool distracting color fringing can be corrected at the time of shooting.
JPEG Resizing and In-camera Cropping
For images easier to email, the SL1 can resize JPEG files in-camera, while leaving the original image untouched. And because the SL1 creates large 18MP images, in-camera cropping creates files large enough for direct printing or other purposes. You can choose vertical or horizontal images, and 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, even 1:1 aspect ratios.
Photobook Set-up
Photobook Set-up feature allows you to share you images in book form. Users can easily choose specific images, images in a folder and even all images, then specify their sequence and layout. The results can be printed in book form with ease.
Optional GPS Compatibility
With the optional GPS Receiver GP-E2 attached to the hot shoe or the digital terminal, the SL1 can record location, including latitude, longitude and altitude, and has the ability to track the trajectory of movement with its logging function. An electric compass records the camera's orientation during each shot, and world time information is recorded through GPS syncing.

Comments about EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

My experience is in 35mm film and TV production, so I haven't shot a still camera in years and have never used a DSLR. I charged the battery, turned the camera on, didn't make any adjustments, just focussed and shot right out of the box and the digital photos were excellent. Frankly the light handling capabilities are great, as the camera instantly handled a three F stop difference with ease. Focus was a breeze. Just very impressive and I purchased the camera based on research but especially the B & H video review. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=b+and+h+video+review+canon+del+i&FORM=VIRE3#view=detail&mid=1E3E6EE0B1758FC840C41E3E6EE0B1758FC840C4

Comments about EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

My wife and I are expecting and decided it's time to move up from our cell phone and point and shoot cameras six months before the due date. So ultimately it'll be used for kid pictures.

It seems to be a great camera for someone like me who likes to tinker with manual settings, yet still fully capable in full auto for my wife.

I've used larger DSLRs before and it seems that the smaller the DSLR the more difficult it is to handle, but I think that's just me. One of the things that offsets that though is the on screen touch controls, which are awesome.

I definitely need to get a prime lens and a higher zoom lens now though.

Comments about EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (White):

I own a 5D Mark III and of course love that camera but the weight makes it hard to carry back and forth to work everyday. I have been finding that I have been talking less images and really wanted to get back to photography. I looked at the mirrorless cameras and was about to buy one when this little WHITE camera popped up during my research. This camera is so light and FUN. It has (most) of the same dials, etc as the 5DMIII plus touch screen capabilities. The images (with the 18-55 STM and the 55-250 STM) are great. In most cases I do not see much difference between this and the 5DMIII. People stop me to ask what white camera I have. Fun to use and great images - plus very light weight. Can't ask for more.

Comments about EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (White):

This camera is an entry-level DSLR with a great compact frame and lightweight build that is conducive to travel. This camera packs a punch at a very affordable price, and has all the features you could ask for without breaking into the professional arena.

The touchscreen is handy and you are able to toggle it on or off with the click of a button. The lens that the camera typically is packaged with is the 18-55 Zoom lens that has a good range of capture. Images look sharp and focused, with fantastic light capture even in very dark scenarios. Flash is small and glary at times, but it does come with an option to upgrade, of course.

I would highly recommend this powerful camera to anyone looking to get into the realm of photography. Batteries have good life and are affordable. User function is a snap. Transfer rate to your PC is wicked fast.

        I absolutely love mine!

Comments about EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

I have a 70D (previously a 60D) and my wife would never use my camera because she found it too large and needlessly complex (I have single point autofocus, AI Servo, back button focusing, and manual modes enabled all the time). She wanted something smaller that wouldn't weigh a lot, be large, or too hard to use but still offered superb image quality and the ability to use additional lenses. After trying Nikon's 1 system, the Sony A6000, and the T5i, we decided to give the SL1 a shot... She LOVES IT! It's a fantastic size and fits easily inside the diaper bag or any of her purses (she carries medium sized purses) and provides fantastic images and video (with no audible focusing sounds) with the 18-55 STM lens. Yet it still has enough flexibility that I can use it however I want on occasion.
In some respects it's not on par with the T5i (only 1 cross type point vs 9, no articulating LCD, flash isn't as powerful, max shutter is 1/4000, and many of the dedicated buttons are gone on the back) but for someone looking for EASY, this is an excellent option!
If you're looking for something smaller/lighter for whatever reason - don't overlook this option!

As a walk around camera when I don't want to carry around my full frame DSLR.
For night use because it has a pop-up flash.

Comments about EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

I'm a film student and amateur photographer, this thing is perfect for both. When I don't want to use my huge professional video camera, I use this thing which has quality that's still fantastic. It's small, yet not too small (and I have big hands), and fits on my rails rig perfectly fine with follow focus and all. The depth of field can go from anything from super-shallow to very deep, and it looks amazing!
Photography wise, I'm a paintball player who also does media on the side, so laying down or sitting on the sideline and dodging paint with this thing is a breeze. Slap a telephoto on it and you're good to go, don't have to worry about taking a hit to the body of the camera because my hands cover nearly the whole thing! It shoots amazing sports shots and is so customizable that you can do basically anything you need to with it. Check out the attached picture, this thing catches paintballs mid-air all the time, makes for really cool shots!
This thing is amazing! Just get it!!!

A very nice little camera. Let me say I had some concerns regarding the size of the body itself, I do not have big hands (neither small) but I own a 70-200 f4 which I thought it could be very hard to use with this camera. Oh well, not a problem at all! Felt pretty much the same as using my t3i!

I am new to the DSLR cameras and bought this camera to take pictures at sporting events and family photos. This camera is very easy to use, did not read the manual except on how to get the battery in. Takes great pictures at baseball games and soccer games. Bought a package deal and was taking pictures that afternoon at the game. great deal at B & H.

Comments about EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

So far I have taken the SL1 out a few times. It is noticeably smaller than other cameras in its class but for me this was not an issue as I have not consistently handled other DSLR's. The picture quality is as great as I had anticipated. Prior to purchasing this camera I had spent time in educating myself of the different manual settings. I highly recommend doing this so you can get the most out of your purchase. The camera does shoot well in auto for most quick shots, but I have achieved much higher quality images in manual in the short time that I have owned this camera.Bottom line, you will not be disappointed if you purchase the SL1. In my opinion it is a great entry level camera at a reasonable price. The quality and feel of the camera is not an issue as I had worried purchasing this smaller frame DSLR.

This is my first DSLR camera. That being said I purchased this camera because it looked to be intuitive for a first time DSLR user and I like the compact size. I have been very impressed by this camera this far. Some reviews have said that it lacks performance in low light, but it beats the socks off my point and shoot. While I have never spent this much on a camera in my life it was more of an upgrade than what I had hoped for. I also purchased a canon 55-250 STM lens at the same time for some longer distance shots. I am more than impressed. I have also seen longer battery life than what was expected by the reviews and advertising of the camera.

I've been resisting buying anything, since I sold my equipment for pennies on the dollar ten years ago. I'm having a lot of fun with the sl1. Digital photography has a long way to go. It's convenient and fast but the tonal range is in need of much improvement. The camera fits in my hands perfectly, all the controls I need are in the right place. It's frustrating that the auto focus only works 80% of the time. Sometimes the auto exposure leaves something to be desired. I'm glad I'm retired and I don't have to use these new cameras to shoot jobs. I suppose working photographers use their software to put tone where the highlights bled out.I'm having a great time with this camera, it's a pleasure to use. It weights 1.5 lbs. with the lens attached, it's like having a feather around my neck.I'm hoping that when I start making prints, I'll at least be able to make a 16x20 without the image falling apart.

This is my first DSLR camera. I was torn between the Canon T5i, Sony Alpha A58 and this Canon SL1.

I've had it for only a few weeks but so far so good. The kit lens that came with it is a good all around lens. Pictures are nice and clear. The camera is easy to use and the menus are straight forward. The camera is pretty light but I can't say thats a bad thing. Overall, I've been very satisfied with this camera.

I would recommend this camera to any one looking to get into the photography hobby.
