Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The B+W #900 lens hood is made out of a high-quality matte black rubber and folds down and protects against contrast-reducing, uncontrolled, stray light. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm).

Comments about B+W 40.5mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
Purchased to use on P7700.
It is a well made product but suffers two problems.
It vignettes at wide angle.
It keeps the lens from fully retracting on shutdown.

This hood is simple, works well, and easily folds out of the way. It doesn't take up much space in the bag either.

It didn't work for us though. We got it for the kit lens of a Olympus PEN, but it vignettes and blocks the on camera flash. Good construction though.

Comments about B+W 40.5mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
I bought this lens hood for my Olympus E-PL1. Unfortunately it's a little to thick so that you can see it on the picture when at full wide angle (14mm aka 28mm). But the lens hood itself is great.
