The B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Extra Wide MRC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann-type filters feature greater optical efficiency than regular polarizing foils and are more neutral in color. The polarizing foils are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass layers, which are then precision-polished to achieve the most accurate plano-parallel surface. This edge sealing protects the filter layers from humidity and are ideal for use with high-speed telephoto and apochromatic lenses.

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention. The extra wide filters feature an oversized ring that is much larger than the male threads for attachment to the lens. This oversized ring permits the use of glass that is also larger and helps to prevent vignetting when using wide angle lenses. Lens hoods should not be used in conjunction with extra wide filters as vignetting may occur.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Kaesemann polarizing foils provide highly neutral coloring and higher image quality than conventional polarizing foils.
Multi-Resistant Coating offers both protection to the glass and helps to improve light transmission and image quality.
Extra wide filter ring provides room for a larger glass substrate and reduces vignetting when used with wide angle lenses.
Constructed from high quality Schott glass for optical clarity.
Brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.

I needed a circular polarizer for my 16-35 lens that did not vignette at 16mm. I looked everywhere for a review but found nothing, so went ahead and ordered from B&H with confidence. The item was exactly as described. What I really like about this polarizer is that it has 95mm threads on the front so you can always add an extra filter to the front. Easily screws onto lens with a good fit. It turns smooth when mounted to lens and does not have too loose a feel.

I very recently purchased this great filter - a very high quality product, that I am happy with. However, it did not come with a simple press on lens cap as other B+W filters have. (My local camera store has shown me their boxed B+W stock to "prove" this.) Due to the oversize outside diameter (probably near 100mm), I cannot find anything that works. If you at B&H do not have a solution, I will then be forced to remove the filter every time I want to protect the filter surface. I hope this will not be the final result.

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Extra Wide MRC Filter:

This polarizer never leaves my camera bag. It does what a polarizer is supposed to do, and it does it well. There is no visible image degradation and while I used it almost exclusively on my wide angle lenses for outdoor, scenic work, it is equally effective with my zooms. The MRC version does indeed make a difference and the extra wide mount virtually eliminates the potential for vignetting. There is one caveat, however, and that relates to standard, lens-included sun shades ... they will not fit over this large ringed filter.

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Extra Wide MRC Filter:

As others have noted, the oversize external ring of the filter basically means you have no way of using your factory lens hoods on any lens you attach this too. The case provided is frankly lousy, and the absence of a lens cap for the filter is not what you should expect from B+W and the price they charge. There is an 'ok' lens cap available though [95mm] sold by B&H - the 'sensei' lens cap B&H # SELCC95, $8 for the cap, $4 for postage !.
Because of the fussy and bothersome handling requirements for this I don't recommend & I ordered the slim XS PRO Kaesemen variant ..

Circular Polarizer with wide rim.Takes a while to get used to but because the filter is larger than the thread size of the lens. Makes it easier to rotate the filter to get the polarizer effect. I have had many polarizers and this is best. Can also easily used on multiple lens with lens rings of different sizes so I only need one for many lens.

Am new to photography and a friend suggested I get a circular polarizing filter to help capture the colors of Fall. I contacted B&H and told them what I needed and the lenses I had, and they suggested this filter. I have already noticed a huge difference in the color quality of my photo's and the way it cuts glare on the water. I love this! Am very pleased with it!

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Extra Wide MRC Filter:

I use this for landscape photography primarily on the 17-35mm lens. It genuinely avoids all vignetting on the 17mm end. Colour is completely neutral which is great.

I would suggest 2 minor improvements:-

                1) It might be good to tell potential customer what the outside diameter of the extra wide mount is so one can easily get a lens cover for it.

                2) the case that come with the filter is poor. For such an expensive filter (or for any filter for that matter), I expected a better case. This plastic case is misaligned and doesn't stay closed. It springs open on its own in the bag.

There is no vignetting, the color rendition is excellent.

It is a bit wider than the lens, so using your standard lens shade will be out, but it is worth it for the quality of the image.
