Questions? Ask our experts:

The Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder is a compact "run-and-gun" camera that is suitable for ENG, event coverage, independent and documentary filmmaking. The camera features a 1/2.84", 1920 x 1080 CMOS sensor that captures video at various frame rates up to 59.94p, including a 24p mode for a more cinematic feel. The integrated Canon 20x HD Optical zoom lens has a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 26.8 to 576mm and features an 8-bladed iris to render highlights in a more natural manner.

The final piece in the image chain is Canon's Digic DV 4 Image Processor. This high-speed image-processing engine powers Canon's Dynamic IS (Image Stabilization) mode reducing image distortion over traditional up-down left-right image stabilization by adding correction for camera roll in three axes. The power of the Digic DV 4 allows the camera to simultaneously encode your video to two different codecs and bit rates, allowing you to have web-ready versions of your master footage available as soon as you stop recording.

The XA25 features both a 3.5" OLED Touch Panel view screen with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, and a color electronic viewfinder with 1,560,000 dots of resolution. The camera features full manual control and auto modes for exposure, focus, white balance, gain, and shutter speed. The camera provides professional features such as a pre-record buffer, peaking, zebra bars, color bars, and reference tone. The zoom speed is adjustable with variable, constant (with 16 different speed levels), fast, normal and slow settings. The camera features a detachable top handle with zoom toggle, record start/stop, IR emitter, tally light, accessory shoe, external mic holder and two XLR connectors with phantom power and manual audio level controls. The XA25 includes a built-in headphone jack and an HDMI mini connector, and outputs composite video and audio via a 3.5 mm four pole mini jack. The XA25 also features a built-in SD/HD-SDI output with embedded audio and time code via a BNC connector.

Two built-in SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots allow you to record video to available media cards in both slots at the same time. This allows you to create an instant back up copy for archiving and data protection or you can capture high resolution AVCHD or MP4 video files on one card while creating a lower data rate MP4 more suitable for the web on the other card. When using two media cards and the camera is in Relay mode, there is no need to stop shooting to swap out a full media card. When one card becomes full, recording seamlessly switches to the other card. Built-in dual-band Wi-Fi allows you FTP video files directly from the camera, or playback footage from the memory cards to Wi-Fi enabled TVs and Computers. You can also remotely control select camera functions from a smart phone or tablet over Wi-Fi, freeing you from remote cables.

Canon Native 1920 x 1080 CMOS Sensor

The XA25 features a new 1/2.84-inch HD CMOS Image Sensor with 2.91 Mp. The large size of the individual pixels enable a minimum subject illumination of 1.2 lux for shooting in low-light conditions.

20x Optical Zoom Lens

The Canon 20x HD Zoom Lens provides a zoom range with 35mm equivalent of 26.8mm-576mm, and a minimum object distance of just 23.6 inches (60cm). The lens features an eight blade iris design providing a more natural look, out of focus areas are smoother and more appealing. The lens features an endless-type manual focus/zoom ring and the built-in power zoom control includes user-programmable direction and sensitivity modes. Zoom speed can be set to variable, constant (with 16 levels), fast, normal or slow.

Digic DV 4 Image Processor

The DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor works in concert with the HD CMOS Image Sensor to provide images with low noise and rich color depth. It also powers the new Dynamic Mode of the image stabilization system, which is an electronic correction of rotational distortion. The processing power of the Digic DV 4 enables the simultaneous encoding of video to different codecs and bit rates for recording to two separate SD cards at the same time.

Image Stabilization

The XA25 offers optical image stabilization (IS) useful for reducing image blur in a wide variety of shooting situations. Additional IS modes can be manually selected to enhance the optical image stabilization, or you can select Intelligent IS and allow the camera to identify the appropriate stabilization mode for the situation.

IS Modes
  • Dynamic IS: improves on standard on translational IS (up-down/left-right) stabilization, by adding three additional corrections - roll axis correction (tilting/rocking of the camera forward and back), horizontal roll correction and vertical roll correction for five-axis correction when shooting on the wide end of the lens.
  • Macro IS: corrects angular and shift-type shake in wide-angle shots.
  • Powered IS: corrects for low-frequency camcorder shake when shooting at the long (telephoto) end of the lens

Auto Focus

Canon Auto Focus (AF) features include natural-looking medium-speed, instant, and Face Detection AF, which can significantly reduce the effort required when shooters need to keep a particular face in focus in a jostling crowd or similar situation.

Advanced Displays

Zebra bars selectable between 70 and 100% are available to help you judge exposure.

The features peaking and 2x image magnification as focus aids.

The camera can display and record color bars or color bars with reference tone. The color bars comply with the SMPTE standards. Reference tone levels can be set at -12 dB, -18 dB or -20 dB.

3.5" OLED Touch Panel View Screen and EVF

The 3.5-inch, 1,230,000-dot equivalent Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) display provides vivid color and a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. The viewscreen has a viewing angle of over 80 degrees in all directions, which allows you to see a usable image even when you are off angle to the viewscreen. The Color EVF is a 0.24 inch with 1,560,000 dots of resolution, and tilts up to 45° to accommodate different shooting positions.

Manual Camera Control

The XA25 features selectable manual/automatic control on the camera functions, allowing you to choose the best settings for the situation. Functions include: Exposure, Shutter Speed, Iris, Gain, Exposure Lock, AGC Limit.

White Balance features 6 presets (Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent H, and Fluorescent), as well as two manual white balance settings. Additionally when specific adjustment of the color temperature is desired, the color temperature may be adjusted in 100K increments from 2,000 to 15,000K.

The cameras body features five user assignable buttons so you can customize the camera to access features without having to enter the menu system.

Audio

The XA25 features an integrated mic, and the detachable handle houses 2 XLR Line/Mic level inputs with +48V phantom power for connecting external mics. The detachable handle also houses the manual audio level controls

A built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack with 16 volume settings provides for accurate audio monitoring.

Outputs

The XA25 features an AV mini terminal for composite video (and audio) via a four pole 3.5 mm mini jack, a mini HDMI out connector which delivers video, audio and allows you the option of superimposing timecode over your video. SD/HD-SDI and timecode is available via the BNC connector on the side of the camera.

Media Card Slots

Two SD/SDHC/SDXC card slots are built into the camera allowing you varied recording options

  • Dual recording: allows you to simultaneously record the same footage to different media cards using different codecs and bit rates
  • Double-slot recording: allows you to record simultaneously to each of the two SD memory card slots, providing an instant backup for your footage
  • Relay recording: the XA25 automatically switches video recording from one memory card to the other when the first memory card becomes full.

Infrared Shooting Mode

Engaging the Infrared (IR) shooting mode, moves the IR Cut filter out of the optical path for shooting in extreme low light conditions. An IR emitter built into the detachable top handle provides an IR source, and the built-in IR diffuser helps prevent IR hot spots on the subject. In IR mode you can select from the traditional green hued IR image or the default setting, which produces a black and white image.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

Dual-band Wi-Fi (5GHz and 2.4GHz) support is built into the camera, allowing FTP file transfer of MP4 video. The camera supports a web browser interface that combined with Wi-Fi support allows you to control key features of the camera, including start/stop recording, zoom (limited to three speeds), exposure functions, and focus using a smart phone or tablet. You can also view and download recorded MP4 footage from the camera on a PC or mobile device. When the camera is in playback mode video files can be uploaded to social media websites via the free Movie Uploader app for iOS devices.

Wired Connectivity

USB
An integrated Hi-Speed USB (mini-B) port allows you to download footage from the memory cards, this port is for output only.

Remote Control Port
The camera features a built-in 2.5 mm stereo mini jack for LANC control.

Detachable Top Handle

The detachable top handle contains the audio controls and external XLR audio inputs, as well as a tally light and the infrared emitter and accessory shoe. You can remove the top handle from the camera to create an even smaller shooting package.

Bluetooth

The XA25 is compatible with the optional Canon WM-V1 Wireless Bluetooth Microphone. This feature allows high-quality audio to be recorded from up to 164 feet away (50m), making it ideal for events, ceremonies, nature recording and other situations that call for unobtrusive sound recording. With optional earphones attached, the WM-V1 Wireless Microphone can also be used as a two-way intercom.

Additional Features

Photo capture: The XA25 offers the ability to capture 1920 x 1080 still images. Photos may be captured to an SD memory card during recording, as well as "frame grabbed" during playback.

Pre-record: The XA25 continuously buffers approximately three seconds of video in memory. When you begin recording the contents of the buffer memory are added allowing you to capture footage before you pressed record.

Intelligent battery system: The XA25 is compatible with Canon's Intelligent Lithium-ion batteries, which communicate remaining running time (down to the minute) to the user.

Language support: The XA25 supports 27 languages: Czech, Danish, German, Greek, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Hungarian, Malay, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Farsi, Thai, Chinese (simplified characters), Chinese (traditional characters), Korean and Japanese.

Church sanctuary event videography has been a primary focus of my ministry for the last 10 years and basis for my review. The Canon XA25 has proven to be a tremendous benefit in optimizing my workflow and the quality of the result. The dual SD card slot recording feature is number one time saver because we conduct as many as 4 events on a given Sunday. One 32 GB SD card stores 4 hours of MP4 formatted continuous HD video. Two cards basically lasts all day. Church services are also recorded realtime to a writable DVD recorder for duplication/distribution post-event and content is streamed live to desktop & mobile viewers on the Internet using video output from the XA25. In our case, we implemented an external H.264 encoding device to manage streamed transmission for Internet broadcast. Hands-on configuring the XA25 and remote management over WI-FI is a relative snap. A high quality stereo shotgun mic was added to provide greater audio and noise rejection from behind and beside the camera. 16:9 wide screen viewing in HD is awesome due to the XA25's standard 20X optical lens. Wide angle viewing can be enhanced if necessary by adding a wide angle lens. The XA25 is light and a joy to have and use on and off the tripod. A great overall piece of optical, electrical, mechanical, software and video hardware engineering by Canon !!!

Ordered one. After using for 3 hours at a conference, screen flickered and went totally white for about 3 minutes, then went black. Camera continued to work, but the screen never came back on again after multiple power cycles.

Returned it to B&H. Got another one.

Again, within about 4 hours of use at a conference, the Zoom got stuck all the way in. You could zoom out but when you let go of the trigger, it zoomed all the way in on its own. Fixed itself after a power cycle, but then it happened again an hour later.

No extreme temperatures or out-of-the ordinary use here. Standard tripod shot. Kept in hardcase.

Called Canon and they were nice but said there was nothing that they could do except process the repair request.

Also, the auto-focus on the XA25 is awful. When you go from all the way zoomed out to all the way zoomed in, it will stay in focused the entire time, but once you release the trigger it will adjust yet again, and try to focus itself for the next second. Not at all the action that I expected with Canon cameras.

Really wanted a small SDI camera with 20x optical zoom and SD card. This camera had all three requirements but it is just so buggy.

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

We use this camera for a church service, we are capturing the Video HD on the memory cards, we are also broadcasting via the SDI-HD output to another location 300' away. We also use it for gerenal video needs and it has been outstanding and extreemly reliable. we distribute the video on Youtube and this has been perfect. We are using a wireless mic input which has been best but can use the mounted mic in a pinch.

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

We use the XA25 for its ability to capture video in a non-live streaming format for corporate events. After the event the mp4 video is stream-ready for VOD delivery on a website. As a bonus, the XA25 has great quality for field production projects, using the SDI out to the Blackmagic Shuttle2 recorder. The Shuttle2 gives us ProRes 422 1080i.
When we start shooting live streaming event in the future, this WiFi features on the XA25 will come in real handy.
What I like best on this camera is the touch screen menu system. By far the easiest menu board to navigate, and it is fast.
We bought the kit with carry bag and 64 GB SD cards. I would also recommend a second back up battery.
The other great feature is the zoom speed adjustments.

I have been using the Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder to capture local events. The camera is a very high quality unit, feels solid and performs great. Although packaged in a small chassis, it has a respectable feature set.
My only concern when using the camera is nose weight (especially after adding a shotgun mic and any additional attachments). Perhaps an additional rear accessory shoe located on the top handle would have provided some options for quickly balancing the camera.
Overall, I am very pleased with the camcorder.

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

Handles well, very versatile, modular, manual control over everything, though it's also very easy to operate in full-auto, and does a good job with it. 20x zoom is very nice. If only this thing had genlock and timecode! But if you don't need those, this is a very, very solid unit that does the job in many different situations.

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

I ordered this Camera from B&H about a month and a half ago, and was disappointed to see it offered now with some very useful extras, that I could use now! But that of course takes nothing away from how good this Camera is! Unquestionably the best one sensor camera on the market and outperforms some 3 sensor cams that I have used in the past. One of the biggest gripes I have had with "Pro" cameras is not having auto focus. This made for much more strenuous shoots over long periods, having to ride the focus ring. The XA25 has the best Auto Focus system I have ever used. And the image quality is simply outstanding. The more I use the Camera, the more I am able to quickly access manual controls quickly getting the right exposure, focus lock and depth of field. And the abiltiy to hook the Camera up to a dual handle tripod equiped with lanc control makes for some silky smooth pans and tilts during interview style shooting. Color is rich and low light shooitng is much better than you would expect from a one sensor camera. So are there in drawbacks, sure?! There is significant vignetting when zoomed out full in daylight shooting. And the Microphone opening on the XLR attachment is a bit to large, as most mics will need some taping to fit. The dual use focus/zoom ring could be twice a wide as it is a bit narrow to to use witout shaking the camera. Bokeh is very good, but just a bit murky compared to 3 chip and full frame DSLR's. These are minor quirks as the XA25 is really a well thought out piece of equipment whose size is just about perfect! The touch screen is very nice and is just about as responsive as an iPad. Understanding how to navigate the Menu will take some getting used to, but its well worth the effort. The XA25 will soon be the Camera that makes those looking to buy a DSLR for video, think twice. With outstanding Image Stabilization, Auto Focus, Exposure, dual card recording, absolutely wonderful slow motion mode shooting capabilities, this Camera is feature rich. I discovered that when shooting handheld, I can activate the on screen zoom controls, and use my thumb on my left hand and effortlessly zoom at variable speeds, keeping my right hand dedicarted to keeping the camera steady. No one has talked about this, but this is a very cool feature that is very useful when you need it. To sum it all up....Canon's XA25 represents one of the best Camcorders ever built under 4 Grand!

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

I only consider this camera to be good for one recording format: 1920x1080 at 59.94 in AVCHD. All other formats require very strict limitations. For instance, we work in 1280x720p59.94 in MP4 at 35Mb/s. This camera cannot do that. In fact, the only 720P format allowed is 720p29.97 at 4Mb/s. So one cannot actually select the raster, frame rate and compression level independently of the other.

To make matters worse, the operation menu and manual are very convoluted about getting this information to you. It looks like the B&H specs have been updated to reflect these settings, but I did not know this before purchasing, while using B&H website for these details.

Because of the limited formats, I would not buy this camera again.

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

I was looking for a camera that I could use to record conferences, awards ceremonies, maybe some sports - and possibly be used in multi-camera studio-setup productions as well. The excellent image quality of this camera is a solid foundation for all the modular, "when needed" goodies that it also has. The full-auto mode is quite good for run-and-gun and point-and-shoot (home videos...or passing it off to someone for a "day in my life" type of shoot...), but there's also deep manual control over just about everything when you want it, for those times when it's being controlled by YOU, the one who really knows what they're doing. For format and media, I can record AVCHD to inexpensive SD cards, and that's plenty for most shoots - but if I ever need to go studio switched mutlicam, or uncompressed, the HD-SDI output is there for me. Dual recording (simultaneous copies to both cards) means an instant backup, or a client copy, etc. There's no timecode input, so for multicam shoots, that means use a slate, or sync it in post. No genlock, so that means you must go through a TBC or use a switcher with internal sync. If you can accept those caveats, this camera gives you many options. The 20x zoom is great in large spaces or for sports. There are numerous customizable buttons to let you access the settings that are important to you on a given day. The touchscreen is generally intuitive and easy to use, with quick access to important functions. It has some nice Wi-Fi features that might be useful in certain situations (especially remotely controlling it as a lock-off camera). Perhaps the most shining example of its versatility is the removable handle - when I need a mic, or a mixer feed, I put the handle on, and carry my larger "work" event bag with its full accessory set. However, when I want to just walk around and shoot some video, I remove the handle (maybe the lens hood too), put it in a smaller bag, and I'm set to go. It becomes very inconspicuous, looking like any other consumer-level "handycam"-type camera, and it's lightweight and comfortable to use. I can use it for b-roll, stock video, even home videos. This removable-handle option alone means that I will begin to carry my camera with me in everyday situations where I otherwise wouldn't bother - and that's exciting, it makes me more able to just go out there and have fun shooting great-looking video of whatever I want, whenever I want, without carrying a massive bag. I don't need a second "home" camera anymore. I wish there was some kind of XA25 / XF105 hybrid that combined the best features of both (SDI, genlock, timecode, 20x zoom, detachable handle, ND filter switch) - but overall, for the price, it's hard to match the quality, versatility, and feature set of the XA25. I'm very pleased with it, it's going to serve me well for a long time.

Canon finally came out with a small camera with a big zoom! The Lanc controller and the ability to shoot to multiple formats at the same time is extremely handy. Picture quality is great. Battery life on supplied battery is not quite lengthy enough, but the ability to purchase a larger one solves the problem. Would recommend highly. Have two already. Will have two more shortly.

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

Film sports mainly for local teams. We use this camera on an Endzone Video Tripod to capture football games from the end zone. The combination of 20x zoom, Lanc control and the ability to shoot AVCHD & MPEG at the same time make this camera very versatile. Would buy again, actually have three of them now!

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

Thus far, I have only used this camera for filming one Indycar race event for vacation video. As a personal camcorder, it is at the large end and was noticeably heavy to hold with the attached wrist strap for extended shooting. I bought it primarily for shooting highschool sports, however, and for that it will be on a tripod. For a prosumer, the controls are well laid out and the camera is easy to use in both automatic and manual mode, with 5 customizable buttons, and one customizable dial (not including the focus/zoom ring).

The image quality is great right out of the box, and I imagine would be even better using the uncompressed HD-SDI output. Though I have not used that feature, it is one of the reasons I chose this camcorder. The XA-25 is one of the least expensive cameras (at this writing) to offer HD-SDI output making it easy to upgrade the image quality without buying a whole new camera.

I only have two real gripes, one minor and the other more significant. The first is that the included charger takes about 4.5 hours to charge the battery from fully drained (for about two hours of shooting time). Not a real problem unless you expect to be shooting a lot throughout the day. Then you'll want either a second battery or the optional rapid charger.

The second gripe is more troubling for me. I have been unable to play footage shot at the highest quality in AVCHD mode (1080/60p with LPCM audio) in Windows Media Player or import it into Premiere CS5.5. I checked the internet, and this appears to be a common problem with that container/codec combination. I don't think it is an issue with the camera per se as I was able to transcode the files into MP4 container files that imported just fine, but audio quality was downgraded from LPCM to AAC in the transcode.

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

I purchased my XA25 about 60 days ago and waited until now to share my opinion. Mostly because I wanted to give honest feedback after being in the field.
I shoot video for commercials and have found the XA 25 to be the perfect camera to get you in the spots larger cameras just can't! Light but rugged this camera handles interior and exterior shots like a Champ.
I have used shotgun mics as well as wireless lavs mics with this camera and the sound is always just right.
I recently shot an actor who was walking toward, past and then away from the camera in a single take. The XA 25 face detection feature worked great and kept the actor in perfect focus.

A couple of negatives (very minor)
                                  1) the mount for microphone was a hair large for my audio technica shotgun mic, perhaps an adaptor ring would be a nice add-on in the next version.
                                  2) the focus ring is small/narrow and not the easiest to operate when you are using the manual settings.

I am buying another xa25 right away for an upcoming two camera shoot!

I am overwhelmed by the performance and value in this gem. GO CANON!

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

I am simply blown away by the features and quality of this camera. I do corporate audio/video production and just used this camera to record a keynote session. The camera was right about 70' from the presenter on stage and was able to get a great waist up shot. Recording two individual streams on SD cards at the same time is wonderful.I had considered the Sony NX30, but the Canon had a better lens and removable media so you're not tying up the camera while downloading footage. I may also use this camera for IMAG since it has HDSDI out (provided the delay isn't too bad). The manual is very easy to reference also. My only gripe (if I have to have one) is that the camera is too small.

Comments about Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder:

Three months ago I purchased a G20 on condition I could return it when the G30 became available at the end of June. When the G30 and XA25 were introduced, the G30 was selling at full list. Popular? Yes! But the XA25 is discounted 10 %, so I thought I'd give it a try because I liked the added extras.

I was so pleasantly surprised to see how much better the quality of build between the two products. Everything about the XA25 looks, feels and functions so much better. It's much sturdier too. I am so delighted to have made this upgrade.

The WiFi functioning through a quality firewall like SonicWall can be a bit of a challege. Requires a bit of geek knowhow.

It's a pity that the HD SDI port only puts out 1080 60i. Were it 1080 60p, this would be a full blown professional camera. Using this port is the only way I know to get this camera to deliver MPEG-2 quality recordings, through an adapter or RAW data to an editor first, then to MPEG-2.

It's great to buy a product that turns out to be more than you expected it to be.
