The 528E is a complete, self-contained voice processor, that performs six separate functions. In addition to a microphone preamp, the unit performs de-essing, compression/limiting (with sidechain input), downward expansion, voice symmetry alignment and the signal can be sculpted with parametric EQ. All six processors may be used simultaneously, and although the unit is referred to as a "voice processor" it is perfectly suitable for any signal.

Each function features a full complement of controls in an easy-to-use layout. Separate LED meters monitor microphone gain and dynamics gain reduction functions. The 528E works with any professional microphone. The preamp's gain is variable up to 60dB, and 48-volt phantom power is provided for use with condenser microphones. The de-esser senses and regulates selectable high frequencies to reduce or eliminate annoying sibilance and "lip smacking".

The compressor/limiter maintains uniform levels while the downward expander eliminates "pumping," "breathing," and noise build up. Because it's program controlled, the unit's dynamic range processor responds quickly to transients. The three band parametric EQ performs both creative and corrective operations, with bandwidth variable from 1/3 octave to 4 octaves, 15 dB boost/cut, and overlapping frequency ranges. The voice symmetry switch of the 528E corrects for excessive positive or negative signal peaks of the human voice. A simple in/out switch controls this function.

Comments about Symetrix 528E Single Channel Voice Processor:

I'm a professional narrator with a home studio. I use an M-Box mini with Pro Tools. Despite my best efforts at soundproofing, my noise floor became prohibitive. A client loaned me an older model of the Symetrix 528e and the difference is astonishing. It's pricey and the EQ functions aren't worth much, but the downward expansion, compressor and de-esser have increased my production standards exponentially and are absolutely worth the price.

Comments about Symetrix 528E Single Channel Voice Processor:

I'm using this with an Electrovoice RE20 into and MBox 2 (the new third-edition unit). Although the pre-amp isn't mind-blowing, it's certainly good for my purposes (podcasting), and having the rest of the features right there alongside the pre is fantastic. I'm particularly impressed by the downward-expander/gate. Only word of caution is you need to spend some real time futzing with the dials to find your ideal sound--it's worth the trouble I promise!

Comments about Symetrix 528E Single Channel Voice Processor:

At first I was hesitant because although I could learn about EQ,Compression etc..I really didn't understand it. So I asked my voice coach in NY about how I could I learn how to professionally enhance my voice on my own . He suggested this Symetrix, I never heard of it. He explained it contained all the EQ's, compress, gate ettc..that I needed to thicken, enhance, my voice with perfect clarity. After plugging it in, and once I heard myself I was amazed at how clear and resonant my voice sounded! It did all that I mentioned above and than some! It's easy to use, my voice now has quality sound behind it. This should be the "LBD" to any girls VO essentials. (little black dress). I love it!

Comments about Symetrix 528E Single Channel Voice Processor:

Having used the 528's extensively over the past several years through work and in my home studio, I can say this is a wonderful processor for most voice types. Though it sounds good out of the box, play around with it to get settings right (especially if your a stickler for perfect audio.) That being said it's easy to maintain your settings by printing off a few worksheets from the symetrix website and documenting things, especially if you use multiple mics or in broadcast situations. Best voice processor on the market for the money.
