The Teradek VidiU On-Camera Wireless Streaming Video Encoder is a consumer-grade video streaming device capable of sending 1080p HD video from a camera to the Web in real-time. You can be recording a kid's baseball game in the park and simultaneously broadcasting it to family at home. VidiU features an HDMI camera input and encodes video in the popular H.264 codec.

VidiU streams to content delivery networks and media servers and is set up for native integration with the Ustream and Livestream platforms -- you'll just need to log in to one of these, select a channel or event, and stream. VidiU streams by dual band WiFi and features a 60-minute internal battery to fully support wireless streaming, and it can also stream by Ethernet or by an optional 3G/4G USB modem.

VidiU attaches right on top of a camera by an included hot shoe adapter. An OLED display indicates connection status and other info and is operable by joystick-type navigation buttons. Audio support includes AAC encoding and a headphone output. In addition to streaming to a platform, you can also simultaneously stream to an iOS device so you can monitor your live broadcast.

Live Streaming without a PC
The Teradek VidiU lets you wirelessly stream live HD video from a camera or switcher directly to the Web without a PC.
Ustream & new Livestream Native Integration
VidiU offers API level integration with the Ustream and new Livestream platforms, letting you stream to your channel as easily as logging into your account.
Broadcast to Any Streaming Platform
Choose the CDN you want -- VidiU's generic RTMP interface allows you to stream to a Wowza server or the platform of your choice.
Go Live Anywhere Cable-Free
VidiU streams over dual band MIMO WiFi, Ethernet, or via one optional 3G/4G USB modem. For events that require you to be completely wireless, VidiU's rechargeable lithium-ion battery lets you roam cable-free for up to 60 minutes.
Stream to iOS Devices
VidiU offers a free application for iOS that allows you to stream a second video feed to your mobile device for monitoring your live broadcast. Since VidiU acts as its own dual band Access Point, you can choose to connect your iPad or iPhone directly to the device or to your local network.
Full HD Video
Connect your HDMI video source to VidiU and stream at resolutions up to 1080p. VidiU encodes video in real-time using high profile H.264 compression and AAC audio at up to 5Mbps. Embedded HDMI audio, headphone output, and a mic/line input are supported.

I'd give this product a 5 star rating but the interface on the box is just flat out difficult to use. I've had trouble using the mobile app as well because my phone seems to be on the fritz but....while on the phone with support I discovered there is a web browser interface app included in the latest firmware update (not documented in included documentation) which pretty much eliminates all the interface problems in my book and I love it even more now. You just point your web browser to the IP address of the Vidiu. I have 2 of these. One as my primary encoder the other as my backup.

Unfortunately, the unit I received was defective and I had to ship it back to Teradek for repairs. Once I got it back it works flawlessly. Be aware that only certain USB 3G/4G modems work and Teradek does not have a list online of which work and which don't. My AT&T Beam does NOT work so that's still a headache for me since I would have to pay a restocking fee if I returned it to AT&T. On WiFi and Ethernet the units works like its supposed to. I've only used it with Ustream so I can't speak for other platforms. Quality of streams is excellent although expect :30 to 2:00 delays in the stream depending on the quality of the stream and your Internet connection. Overall it's a great device if you get one that works. Unfortunately I've heard from several people who got defective units and had to ship them back to be fixed. Great news is Teradek customer service is excellent and get an A+ grade.

Comments about Teradek VidiU On-Camera Wireless Streaming Video Encoder:

Seems well thought out. Setup was easy once you understand the legend icons for what the buttons do. I couldn't see at the time of setting it up so that was the only difficult thing. Flashlight took care of that.
Seems well thought out and build is decent.

Comments about Teradek VidiU On-Camera Wireless Streaming Video Encoder:

I help run a live lecture-in-a-bar series & wanted a way to stream our shows both online and into the next room. This does the trick well at a pricepoint that apparently can't beat. Streaming to ustream and YouTube worked well. We use the ethernet streaming for reliability, but it worked reasonably well over wifi and with a USB 3G modem I tested with. I wish the front panel interface was a bit more useful. I've found the android app is nearly essential in changing settings. This has proved to be more more dependable than our HDMI (over cat5) extenders.

Fought with a Blackmagic Design Ultrastudio Express, and a Matrox MXO2 Mini to setup a live streaming rig. Between drivers and compatibility issues it was an unsuccessful headache. Tried the VidiU, and all my problems were solved. Client was very impressed.

Comments about Teradek VidiU On-Camera Wireless Streaming Video Encoder:

The unit got hot quickly and did not stream HD (720P) at a nominal speed, slow updates to live feed with minuscule changes.

To operate this device streaming HD (720P) content you need:

-high mbps upload speed from ISP (perferably 5mbps)
-cat-5e/6 cable from encoder(VidiU) to network switch/wired router
-phone/table/PC to view UI from app or web browser
-be subscribed to Livestream/Ustream/JustinTV or FMLE (Though not recommended due to hassle)

            You cannot:

connect to the internet wirelessly from the encoder, 4G stick is useless as data will be used up after a single broadcast

Comments about Teradek VidiU On-Camera Wireless Streaming Video Encoder:

I do live stream giveaways over my YouTube channel. I've been practicing with this unit to see if it will work and so far it's a bit hit and miss. While I can get it to work, sometimes the audio and video are out of sync. Also, so far the best I can get out of it is 720p. When I try 1080p from different locations it just doesn't want to work. When in 720p it looks good. I'm still going to try it out on my next live stream giveaway because I'm tired of being forced to stay in one place and this should free me of that.

I use it plugged in to power and have not had any issues with it. I haven't tried to plug an external mic into it to see if that helps the audio but it is on my list.

Comments about Teradek VidiU On-Camera Wireless Streaming Video Encoder:

I chose this product because I was looking for a way to stream video to livestream while being portable with a camera. I almost bought the livestream broadcaster until I found this unit. The nice thing about this device is that you can send to different CDN's. However it only works with the newer livestream service. The other livestream broadcaster that I was looking at is only livestream specific. I also loved the app that you can install on an iPad. It allows you to configure the device quickly and see the live feed from the camera. One downside that I have found is that the battery life is limited to about 1 hour. Since the battery is integrated you can't swap in a new battery when it dies. You will have to recharge it with the provided AC power supply.

Id recomend download the app to set everythign up as the buttons on the front can be a bit troublesome to use. Overall, Bravo Teradek on designing something that has been missing in the broadcast world.

So it's not going to replace your Sat truck and there are some other things you could get that are better. For the money though, there really isn't much better out there.

This box does one thing and one thing well. It broadcasts for your on your favourite CDN and makes it look good. It's a great little box and to put anywhere and get runnign so well.

Comments about Teradek VidiU On-Camera Wireless Streaming Video Encoder:
