The Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K features a Super 35mm sized image sensor with a global shutter and a Canon EF lens mount. The camera is capable of recording Ultra HD 4K (3840x2160) and 1080p video using the 10-bit Apple ProRes 422 family of codecs, as well as the visually lossless, compressed 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW at 4000x2160 resolution. The built-in recorder utilizes removable 2.5" SSDs, which enable the high data rates required by RAW and 880Mbps ProRes HQ. The camera's ability to expose for 12 stops of dynamic range lends the image a truly film-like look, and the Super 35mm (21.12 x 11.88mm) sized sensor approximates the standard of traditional film.

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K retains the beautifully crafted design and machined aluminum chassis of the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Much like its predecessor, this camera features a 5" touchscreen LCD display with 800 x 480 resolution, which enables monitoring and playback as well as an efficient means for navigating the menu and entering metadata. The camera also includes a full license for DaVinci Resolve color grading software and UltraScope for live scopes via a Thunderbolt connection.

Super 35 Sensor with Global Shutter
With a large Super 35 size sensor you get familiar framing and behavior from the lenses you already own. The sensor features a global shutter so you get perfect panning, without rolling shutter artifacts.
Canon EF Lens Mount
With the Canon EF compatible lens mount you can choose high quality optics that are designed to take advantage of the large Super 35 size sensor with minimal cropping. This lets you use Canon's extensive line of EF lenses, as well as Zeiss ZE lenses and other third party EF mount lenses. The active mount enables full electronic control with compatible EF mount lenses.
Ultra HD 4K and 1080HD ProRes Recording
The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K records Ultra HD 4K (3840x2160) and 1080p using the ProRes 422 family of codecs (HQ, 422, LT, Proxy). At a massive 3840 x 2160 pixels, Ultra HD 4K is four times the resolution of 1080p. The camera also features a single 6G-SDI output which supports Ultra HD live production.
CinemaDNG RAW Recording
For the highest quality and most post-production flexibility, the camera can record using the compressed, yet visually lossless, 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW. RAW recording yields 4000x2160 resolution, using every pixel from the sensor. This gives you a little extra width to work with, useful when cropping to 3840x2160 or upscaling to DCI standard 4096x2160 for your final deliverable.
Built-in SSD Recorder
The camera's built-in recorder utilizes removable 2.5" SSDs. You can playback directly from the camera, mount the disk to any computer, or use Blackmagic Design's HyperDeck Studio deck. When finished shooting, simply connect the SSD to a computer and edit or color grade shots straight from the disc.
12 Stops of Dynamic Range
With 12 stops of dynamic range you get amazing looking images beyond those of regular video cameras or even many high-end broadcast cameras. All this dynamic range is captured into ProRes or CinemaDNG files at 4K resolution, so images retain a beautiful film look. By capturing more detail from the sensor you have greater creative flexibility in post production. You can really push the shadows or highlights in either direction and preserve fine details.
Standard Connections
The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K uses standard connections, so you never need to source custom cables. It includes a 6G-SDI connection for Ultra HD resolution or down converted HD output over a single SDI cable. The built in Thunderbolt connection lets you plug into a laptop computer and use the included UltraScope software for real time waveform monitoring, and the 1/4" jack mic/line inputs enable high quality uncompressed audio recordings. Other connections include a 12 to 30 volt DC input, a 3.5mm headphone input socket and LANC remote control.
Touchscreen LCD Display
The integrated 5" LCD display features 800 x 480 resolution and touchscreen technology. Use the capacitive touchscreen to access menus and change settings such as recording format, shutter angle and more. Double tap the screen to zoom into the image for fast and accurate focus. Tap once on the screen to display the metadata entry page where you can enter information such as shot number, search tags, scene number, timecode and more. You can even set shot number and other data to increment automatically. This metadata saves directly into your files and is compatible with popular editing software, simplifying file management in post production.
Flexible Power Options
The inclusion of an internal rechargeable battery makes the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K a truly portable high resolution camera. You get up to 90 minutes of recording time from the battery and the remaining power information is shown in the data strip at the bottom of the picture. The wide input voltage of 12-30V means you can connect external professional battery packs that will let you operate the camera longer while recharging the internal battery at the same time.
Remote Control
The LANC protocol is a standard method for the remote control of many professional cameras. The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K features a standard 2.5mm jack for connecting to a remote that lets you trigger the camera to start and stop recording, plus it supports electronic lens control of the focus and iris, all using an industry standard protocol and jack connection.
Other Features
  • Includes DaVinci Resolve color grading software and UltraScope

  • IRIS button adjusts iris settings when used with a compatible EF mount lens

So I waited about six months before I pulled the trigger on this purchase. My biggest fears were FPN and hot pixels. When I got the camera, it was heavier than I expected. With the external battery, it was even heavier. I rigged it up and I must say, it's not as small and handy as a dslr, but it's still pretty compact. So let's talk image. Out of the box there was a lot of FPN (fixed pattern noise). I was understandably concerned. But I did some research and did some firmware upgrades and found that if you upgrade sequentially, from 1.8, to 1.9, instead of going straight to 1.9, it help with the sensor calibration and I can say my FPN is pretty much all gone. Hot pixels are sort of an issue. I say sort of, because they are present in tests, but not practical use. When I test the camera in a pure black situation at ISO 800, I see hot pixels. However, when shooting in low light in a practical situation, I honestly can't find any hot pixels. I've come to terms with this black magic (pun intended). More about the picture. I really wanted to see what it could do, so I went out and shot some 4k raw, and the picture was absolutely stunning. The raw is VERY gradable, even if the workflow is a bit of a pain, the images were great. The in camera color profile is flat and neutral, and with the right LUT and some grading the images sparkle. I still have some tests to do as far as long takes go (recording for 20-30 minute stretches) but I can say all in all I'm very happy with the camera. Also, they say this is not a low light camera, this is true, it is a light hog, however, I shot an interview yesterday where I used a couple hardware store bucket lights with 100w bulbs and got a fantastic image. So of course it's best to have some cinema lights around, and outdoors is a no brainer, but practical indoor shoots are very possible. Lastly, the audio is garbage. Not a big deal for me, since I almost always record audio separately. But I used to run a line from my audio recorder to my 5D which saved me a step of syncing in post. Even when running a line in to this camera, the audio is crackly and thin. I can't figure it out, and I am a certified audio engineer and these issues have me baffled. So do yourself a favor, make sure you have an audio recorder, and a slate and just sync in post like a big boy ;)

I bought the BM 4K camera in hopes of getting everything they promised: A S35 Sensor that shoots in RAW and Prores. I was willing to work around the fact that there are no scopes or histograms included on the camera and that there would be a need for external batteries and sound (no xlr's).

However, I started noticing Vertical lines showing up on my camera picture. I notified Blackmagic and they described it as Fixed Pattern Noise. They acknowledged the problem but REFUSED to return the faulty sensor. Here instead is what they suggested I do "You can check the forums for workarounds. I believe you can underexpose, use a lower ISO then fix it in post. "

The camera is useless at 800 ISO even with a well lit shot. This is a serious problem on ALL camera's. Not just a few.

Comments about Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K (EF Mount):

I've been using this camera for about a month now and I can say that this camera produce beautiful footage.
Before this camera,I used canon 5DMKIII with magic lantern installed and there is no comparison between the two system. I only shoot raw file format and after good post processing and color grading, it is beautiful to look.
Only drawback I can say is that the battery life is very short and only the fastest SSD deliver no drop frame when shooting in RAW.
Sandisk Extreme Pro are among the usable SSD and I used Toshiba bought from B H works fine too.
All in all I'm very happy with this camera compared to others that shoot 4k that cost thousands more.

Comments about Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K (EF Mount):

We recently did an institutional video recordings involving factories and forests in Brazil. We work in very harsh conditions. Under the sun and heat and humidity in the china factories. The camera endured hours of work over 12 hours straight. We use an adapter with Sony batteries, and each battery dual stand about 3 hours of continuous use.The camera came to be very hot, but still continued working properly. Remembering that we use an appropriate adapter for BMCC who left the obstruction-free fan.
The camera make great time lapse takes! We use most o times a laptop apple with a thunderbolt cable to check the vector scope and video quality.
We recorded all the material in ProRes 4k, and use a mac pro with helped by a UltraStudio 4K and raid blackmagic on the issue. We generate approximately 10 hours of material consumed 3 TB. We did a rough edit in premiere cc with completion in DaVince, which proved to be highly stable and fast in the 4k mode.
An honorable mention for the lens rokinon, very useful in low light (use only kit of 3 LED lights for close-ups and generate volume and shade in the stations nearest scenes).

Comments about Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K (EF Mount):

There are problems with the 4K RAW working consistently. You have to have the right card or you start dropping frames. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.

After all the updates from BMD are done for the camera, the 4K pro res and everything else work great. Still an awesome camera, but 4k RAW is a bit misleading because of the card speed issues.

It's a very good camera. But need to buy a lot of accesories eg. Rig, batt, monitor, adapter for mic head. Which cost a lot (Previously i used to use 5d mkii). But the picture is super awesome.

now that Blackmagic has updated to the new firmware that supports audio levels, in camera disk format and multiple ProRes selections, this camera is incredible. the bigger sensor and 4K makes this camera worth getting over the older 2.5K camera which I also own. color grading is a breeze with Davinci Resolve once you get the basics. LCD screen is still hard to see outside in daylight but I have a ext. monitor to help.

The video quality is great. For low-light scenes, e.g. anything inside without study lightning, requires a fast lens. The camera audio can be used to scratch but a separate audio recorder is going to be helpful.

Pros: Image quality when lit well is beautiful.Comes with Da Vinci Resolve - great softwareVery high quality codecsCons:Low light is absolutely atrocious! only 3 ISO settings. Camera connections are strangeThe screen is useless outdoors or around light. It also doesn't tilt in anyway so theres only one way to shoot with it and view.Camera DOES NOT shoot 59 fps. This was confirmed to me by Black Magic. They had the intention of adding it later on, however, the camera sales with the specs of 59 fps. It only goes up to 30fps. Also, Black magic isn't being upfront about the fact that this is NOT a super 35 sensor. It is actually smaller. It a camera such as this one with a terrible low light performance, this is crucial. Battery life is very disappointing. Think of it as a backup only in case your power chord got pulled out for a few minutes. The fan is very noisy. present in all audio recordings from the camera. Very limited white balance options. Overall, this is a bad camera. Theres more to a camera than a nice image outdoors. The design is cool but don't let it fool you. Its a camera that works against you, not for you.

Comments about Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K (EF Mount):

Like others have said, this camera is not for everybody. You are buying a box with a sensor. It's a no frills production 4K UHD workhorse. With the right lenses and support system, you will be amazed at the output. But you need good lighting and a controlled environment, similar to what you might expect on a movie set. I have the Cinema Camera 2.5K and the Pocket Camera (HD), which are much more capable in lower light. But they all have a "Blackmagic cinematic look" that allows them to cut together nicely in post. The strong pluses are: 1. Global shutter (no jelly roll) 2. Big image UHD 3. Codecs: RAW 4K and all the flavors of Prores 4: I can use all my EF L series Canon glass. 5. Images are some of the best you will see from any camera!Minuses are: 1. Firmware updates are adding features that many believe should have been there already, ie being able to delete a clip "in camera", which is still not available. But to be fair they have made a lot of updates to the firmware recently which has quieted the clamor of critics. 2. You will not be happy with 4K RAW images produced at ISO 800 in low light. They will be noisy and probably unusable without serious post noise reduction. 3. I am not a fan of the design erganomically. Once it is tricked out with follow focus matte box etc, it is very functional. 4. Screen is not usable in bright light. I use a broadcast monitor on set. This is not a run and gun camera. Having said all that, I am a Blackmagic Cinema devotee. I love the look and feel of my work with these cameras. The included Davinci dongle is the icing on the cake. Davinci Resolve is a the "gold standard" when it comes to color grading... But wait... There's more! Recent issues of the software include robust editing capability that may obviate the need to use any other NLE. That is cool. If you love the dynamic range and creative latitude allowed by working with RAW footage, you will love the breadth, depth and sheer power of the Davinci Resolve engine. Just make sure you have the fastest most powerful computer you can afford.

It is a great product. Great pictures. But the storage is very expensive. Unless you compress your footage with a good codec to keep some more spave in your hdd,the cost to record with camera can male you spend lot of money.
