The Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Monitor is a PCIe slot playback card with both SDI and HDMI outputs for color-correcting or delivering client presentations in more precision on top-resolution HDMI or SDI monitors. You'll be able to send video from your computer to a large HDMI display locally or to an SDI monitor up to 300 ft away.

The card outputs up to 10-bit uncompressed video, and you can output by SDI and HDMI simultaneously or through only one of these. All the outputs are active, so once you plug a cable into them, they'll begin functioning. The card automatically switches between SD and HD, so it'll handle all common video formats.

Outputs
  • SDI 10-bit SD/HD switchable video with 16 ch HD / 8 ch SD embedded audio
  • HDMI type A video with 8 ch audio embedded in SD and HD
4-Lane PCI Express Card
The Mini Monitor is a 4-lane PCI Express card and is compatible with 4, 8 and 16 lane PCI Express slots on Mac OS X, Windows 8 and Linux. The only Mac capable of accepting the card is a Mac Pro as other Macs can't be opened to enable installation.

Can't beat the price for sure but there are some limitations. The output is application specific, i.e. you can't use the monitor it's hooked up to as a general second monitor. It will only work with the software specified by Blackmagic.
I use it with FCP7 and Davinci Resolve, I was hoping to also use it with Photoshop for color correcting stills but so far I haven't been able to get it working.
Another issue I'm having is it threw audio and video synch waaaay off in FCP7, both on the Panasonic BT-LH 1700 monitor it's hooked up to and my computer monitors. I've messed with the output settings in FCP but haven't been able to fix it. There's nothing on the BM forums about this yet and no BM literature/ instruction specific to this product that I can find.
Which BM software you need from the install disk is unclear. I installed one at a time until it worked so as to avoid installing unnecessary software.
All that said, you'll be hard pressed to find a more economical way to get an SDI signal out of your tower.

Comments about Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Monitor:

Tried many HDMI cables, monitors, drivers and slots on the motherboard, but always had flickering, distorted, garbled picture. Phone support was nice, but didn't help. BM online forum is totally scattershot. It's mpossible to search for your product, because it's all lumped together (cameras, cards, high end stuff). Search engine works poorly as well.

This product is great for using an external monitor. Be sure to download the drivers from BlackMagic. Also be ware that upon updating you will loose all your favorites and settings in FCP. However the ability to view your media in virtually realtime is worth reloading all the favorites and shortcuts.

Added this piece to my 2009 Mac Pro and it works great! The HDMI and SDI outputs work simultaneously so I can power 2 screens with the outputs. I thought I was having issues with it interfering with my bluetooth magic mouse at first, but that problem seems to have gone away. I've read about that in a small percentage of users though, so we'll see.

You can't beat the price if you are installing this on a system dedicated to playing back video to a projector/television (using one of the supported programs). So, if all you need is a "plug and play" option with virtually no scaleable options; it is a good one.

That being said, the lack of extended desktop is a product killer for home studio/commercial use.

Purchased card for a Dell Precision T5600 Workstation which I use for video editing. Card would not function at all. Contacted Blackmagic Design tech support. Short hold time and very helpful. They said they have experienced problems with the card on Dell computers. Tested the card in a different Dell computer and got video out (both HDMI and SDI) but no audio. So the card appears to be functioning (at least partially). I'm wondering if it could be a driver issue/conflict. Since I need the card for the workstation, I'm going to try to return it.
