This was the first stereo receiver I had purchased since 1987, so I was already intimidated by all the features this one has (except the WiFi since I work with PCs and wireless home networks on a regular basis) that my old one doesn't, before it even arrived. However, the setup was a lot easier than I anticipated including speaker calibration, and setting up the WiFi and Bluetooth to stream audio from other devices on my home network. I really like how the menu for the receiver appears on the TV, especially for setup and when streaming audio.
I like the Internet features that the receiver offers, like Pandora, Slacker, and SEN. I now listen to several local stations through the Internet because I get better reception than when listening to them over the air with an indoor antenna.
The 6 HDMI inputs are great because I am using every one of them. Because of the HDMI inputs, I was able to get rid of all of the component, and composite and audio cables I had been using to connect devices to my old receiver, as well as an HDMI switch box that I had connected to the TV. I like the bypass feature which allows you to watch TV in the standby mode if you don't want to use the receiver for the sound.
Although I am currently using a 5.1 speaker setup, I like the fact that the receiver supports a 7.2 system should I want to expand in the future.
The owner's manual does not specify which WiFi protocol the receiver supports. But, information I read elsewhere about the receiver says it supports only 802.11b/g, but not "n" like all of the other wireless devices in my house. However, I have no problem streaming audio from any device on my network over an 802.11g wireless connection without any "hiccups," even though the WAP in the router is on the opposite end of the house on an upper floor.
The two buttons near the bottom of the remote for the volume and Sound Field were confusing at first, and I kept hitting the one for the Sound Field when I meant to hit the one for the volume.
The choice of Sound Fields or schemes is still a bit overwhelming and I am still playing around with them to determine the best ones for different applications (watching TV, movies, and listening to various soures of audio).
This receiver was listed as CNET's best AV receiver value of the year, and I also believe it was an Editor's Choice, which is one reason I chose it. With all of the features, especially the 7.2 channel, WiFi, and Bluetooth support, and the 6 HDMI inputs, I think it truly is a great value, especially for the price that I got it for from B&H. CNET did not like the fact that it does not have any MHL-compatible inputs and does not support true second zone audio. However, since I do not need either feature, this was not an issue for me.

I got this because I have been waiting for years to bi-amp my pair of bozak B-4000 speakers and with a 7.2 channel amp I could do it.

This is for a livingroom stereo system without VIDEO! Unfortunately I did not pay enough attention to the other components is the system. I still have a reel to reel 10" tape recorder and a cassette recorder along with a turntable.

There just are not enough inputs to this receiver! I still am trying to get the network connection to work but because I have it sitting in a shelf in the rack, I can't raise the input antenna for my wireless network and I can't remove the antenna to add an extension cable to mount the antenna externally.

I wondered why there was no rear view of the unit on the website but failed to follow through to either find or read the specs close enough to catch that limitation. Now I will have to mount an external switch to implement the playback/record functions on the tape players and either add a preamp for the turntable or use its USB output to record the albums, record on CD, and play them back on the CD player ( that's why I got the new turntable with USB output).

So, it's a great sound and the AM/FM tuner works fine except I can't setup the sound channel levels properly until I connect some type of video monitor so I can see the menus.

Not to impressed with the manual. Terms are not consistant with the button functions between the text and the diagrams of the remote so you have to try verious combinations to get some functions to work.

I guess knowing what I know now, I don't think I would buy this model but it would be hard to find something that was not video-centric in this price range.

      Comments about Sony STR-DN840 7.2-Channel 4K Wi-Fi Network Receiver:

I bought this Sony STR-DN840 a/v receiver to replace an Onkyo unit that was damaged during an electrical storm. I haven't had it up and running for very long, but so far, all is well with this unit. Hooking it up was very straight forward and the sound quality with my old Cerwin Vega speakers is very good! Like I said, I haven't had it long, but my initial impressions are good and I'd recommend this Sony product to anyone considering an a/v receiver in this price range. Thanks again, B&H!

Syncs up well with my Sony HDTV. No issues. Instruction manual is a tough read but managed to get the needed info for proper setup. Enough power for 7+woofer system for my needs. I'm no audiophile, but am satisfied thus far with surround sound experience with the added sound experience options. Remote takes some getting used to as it is not as straightforward for easy use. Simple cabinet design, nothing fancy, but efficient for purpose.

      Comments about Sony STR-DN840 7.2-Channel 4K Wi-Fi Network Receiver:

I ordered this after my Onkyo receiver that failed after 2.5 years. From what I can see on the forums, Onkyo has a significant issue with sound dropping out on these and they won't back it after the warranty is over. Therefore, I was not interested in purchasing a third one (the first one was fine). I have had many Sony products over the years and this one was rated highly on the web. B&H had the usual competitive pricing, so I ordered it and received it in two days which is typical for B&H. It was easy to set up and the functionality is intuitive. The sound and the picture quality passed through it is superb. I highly recommend this receiver if you need this many channels and have a large room. I only need 5 channels, but I now have room to add.

I bought this to upgrade my home theater system which uses a HD projector and Bose speakers.

Simple to set up the unit and the DVD players, plus a Sony Google TV box.
The smartphone APP controls both the STR and the Sony TV/BD box. Makes using the system a breeze. No need for Logitec remotes, etc.

Sound is awesome (which is the most important thing really). Crystal clear sound imaging.

Also, the unit can connect to the internet for music from Pandora (which I could do anyway with the Sony Google TV) and it has Bluetooth to connect to my phone and tablet to play music. And the tablet controls the volume, etc.

I use this receiver with a new HD TV, DVD player and a DirecTV satellite receiver. Since I had an old receiver previously setting up this one was fairly easy as far as connecting speakers, etc. but the Sony has many more features that I was unfamiliar with. I like the nice clean look and the capabilities of the receiver.

Would have given it 5 stars if the manual was a little clearer. The instruction manual often told me to consult a different page for more info on setting something up but the page I was referred to really didn't explain it well.

All in all though this is a great receiver for the price.

This receiver is built for today's media devices in mind HDMI, 4k not yesterday's 20 year old stereo equipment like turntables and tape decks with RCA jacks. HDMI, USB, iPod, Android and streaming devices. It even has built-in App's like Pandora and Slacker. It's very simple to connect to a home network and stream from a media box, Blu ray player or Bluetooth device. If you don't understand today's basic computer technology like Wi-Fi then stay away from this receiver. The sound is great and the 7.2 ability is amazing. This receiver has all you need to connect your HDMI equipment and enjoy great entertainment in your living room or wherever. I have had this receiver for 1 month connected to Mirage Nanosat's 5.1.

          Comments about Sony STR-DN840 7.2-Channel 4K Wi-Fi Network Receiver:

I am very happy with this receiver. Set-up was a snap and the performance exceeds this unit's price point. The remote is a little kluggy but since I'm switching to a universal it won't be a long term factor. Over All high praise!

Admittedly I am NOT an expert. That being said, I love the unit. Extremely easy to set up, sound's great on 7 surround setup.

              Comments about Sony STR-DN840 7.2-Channel 4K Wi-Fi Network Receiver:
