The GR Digital Camera from Ricoh is a high performance compact camera with a 16.2MP APS-C size sensor and the GR Engine V Image Processor for sharp, high resolution imaging and fast response time. The camera's sensor is designed without the optical low-pass filter in order to produce particularly sharp details.

Its fixed focal length 18.3mm lens has the 35mm equivalency of a 28mm lens, and with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 you can effectively work this wide-angle lens in low light situations and produce shallow depth of field images. Two aspherical elements in the lens design minimize aberrations for sharpness from corner to corner within the frame.

An expansive ISO range from 100-25600 provides further low light capability and the GR Engine V works to keep noise-levels down, even at high ISOs. Full HD 1080p video capture is supported with continuous autofocus during shooting. Multiple resolutions and frames per second are available including 60 fps in 720 HD.

A 3.0" 1,230k-dot LCD monitor provides composition and playback viewing and WhiteMagic technology, which adds white pixels to the standard RGB colors, improves image brightness, contrast and visibility even in the brightest lighting. The camera itself offers a compact, lightweight design built from magnesium alloy with an ergonomic rubberized grip and conveniently placed controls all accessible with one hand. A pop-up flash and hot shoe mount are incorporated as is a dual-axis electronic level for proper image alignment.

The GR supports both JPEG and RAW formats and offers fast performance, including one second start-up time, fast autofocus speeds and up to 4 fps continuous shooting speed at full resolution. A designated AF button provides continuous AF when shooting moving subjects and an aperture preview button allows you to check your exposure and depth of field before shooting.

Fully automatic modes, including Face Detection, are available as are aperture and shutter priority modes and full manual exposure control. The GR also offers Shutter / Aperture Priority mode which automatically sets ISO sensitivity based on your exposure adjustments. Macro mode for detailed close-ups is supported and a 35mm crop mode allows you to size your images with 35mm film frame ratios. Nine image effects are also available to add creative expression to both your stills and videos. Image Effects include Retro, Cross-Process and High Key.

Function-enhancing firmware upgrades, which have been popular with all GR-series models, will become available for the new GR as well, keeping its advanced performance features up to date.

16 MP APS-C CMOS Image Sensor
The GR's 16.2MP APS-C CMOS image sensor offers low-noise characteristics even at high ISO, super-high resolution imaging quality, color accuracy and a wide dynamic range.
GR ENGINE V Image Processor
The advanced GR ENGINE V imaging engine offers high-sensitivity shooting with minimal noise and fast response times, including fast autofocus and up to 4 fps continuous shooting.
No Optical Low-Pass Filter
The omission of the low-pass filter in the sensor design enables particularly sharp details and color-rich images. To balance for lack of the Optical Low-Pass filter, a chromatic moiré compensation function is added to minimize wavy moiré patterns and distortion in certain images.
18.3mm f/2.8 Lens (28mm Equivalency in 35mm Format)
The GR's fixed wide angle 18.3mm f/2.8 GR lens, equivalent to 28mm in the 35mm format, provides high resolution images with edge-to-edge sharpness and low distortion. The seven element lens design includes two aspherical elements to minimize chromatic aberrations. With its newly designed nine blade diaphragm, the GR lens produces a natural bokeh effect at larger apertures.
3.0" 1,230k-dot LCD Screen with WhiteMagic Technology
Featuring Sony WhiteMagic technology which adds white pixels to the standard RGB colors to improve image brightness and visibility, the rear 3.0" LCD provides composition and playback viewing.
Optional Optical Viewfinders
Two optical viewfinders are available (both sold separately) to enhance composition capability and stability. The GV-2 28mm mini viewfinder and the GV-1 21/28mm viewfinder both attach to the camera's hot shoe mount.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording
Capture Full HD video in widescreen 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) with efficient, high quality h.264 compression at 30 fps. Continuous Autofocus remains active with movement as the camera stays focused on moving subjects in the center of its angle of view.
ISO 100-25600
Supported by its APS-C sensor and the advanced GR V imaging engine, the GR offers high sensitivity shooting from ISO 100 to ISO 25600 with minimal noise.
High Speed Autofocus System with 4 fps Continuous Shooting
The high speed autofocus system captures crisp subjects in a mere 0.2 seconds, and start-up time is only one second. The GR's AF Continuous Shooting function captures a series of photos at a maximum speed of four frames per second, allowing capture of fast-moving subjects in sharp focus.
Designated AF & Aperture Preview Buttons
An AF (autofocus) button is accessible with the thumb on the back panel. When the AF lever is set to the Continuous AF (C-AF) mode, you can capture a series of images of a moving subject - all in sharp focus - by pushing the shutter release button while depressing the AF button. An aperture preview button is on the camera's side panel for quick confirmation of the depth of field before shooting.
JPG or DNG RAW Capture
Capture both JPG and open-standard DNG RAW images. The GR offers a variety of computer-free image processing functions, including in-body RAW-data development to output JPEG format files.
Manual and Automatic Modes
You can set the GR to shoot on fully automatic mode, allowing the camera to determine the optimal settings for each shot or shoot in manual, controlling all settings to you exact needs. Aperture-priority and Shutter-priority modes as well as custom My Settings mode are available also.
Shutter Speed/Aperture Priority Mode
The GR features the original Shutter speed / Aperture Priority (TAv) exposure mode, featured only in PENTAX/RICOH-brand digital SLR cameras. This innovative mode automatically sets the optimum ISO sensitivity based on the shutter speed and aperture selected by the photographer.
Shutter Type
The GR utilizes an in-lens leaf shutter and enables flash sync up to 1/2000 of a second.
Built-in Flash and Hot Shoe Mount
The GR offers a convenient built-in pop-up flash unit with several flash modes, a Guide Number of 5.4 (at ISO 100) and an effective range of 3.3 - 9.8'. In addition a TTL-A (TTL with pre-flash) hot shoe mount for an external flash is provided. The maximum sync speed for an external flash is 1/400 seconds.
Neutral Density Filter
For further exposure control the GR incorporates an ND filter in both manual and automatic modes.
Image Effects
The Image Effect modes allow the user to add a variety of visual effects to create distinctive expressions without the need for a computer. The direct-access Effect button positioned on the camera's side panel makes selection of one of the nine image effects easy. Effects include: B&W, B&W (Toning Effect), High Contrast B&W, Cross-Process, Positive Film, Bleach-Bypass, Retro, Miniaturize, High-Key.
Macro Mode
Macro mode allows you to capture the details with sharp close-up imaging. Minimum focus distance in macro Mode is 3.9".
35mm Crop Mode
For that classic 35mm look, use the specialized crop mode to instantly set a 35mm frame ratio crop.
Durable Compact Design
Despite its large image sensor, the GR has a compact and portable design. Its casing is made of a lightweight magnesium alloy, while its exterior design retains the style typical of the GR series. Designed for maximum comfort and operational ease, all control buttons are laid out for easy access with the right hand.
Dual-axis Electronic Level
For high precision horizontal and vertical alignment, use the electronic dual-axis level to make sure your shot is perfectly aligned with the horizon or framed just the way you want it.
Eye-Fi Card Compatible
With Eye-Fi wireless LAN SD memory cards, the user can automatically transmit recorded images to a smartphone, and even select favorite images and resize them before transmission. In the playback mode, the user can also recall the transmitted images on the monitor using the Effect button on the side panel.
Languages Supported
GRs shipped outside of Asia or Japan will include: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Turkish, Greek and Russian.

The new Ricoh GR is the latest in a long line of compact street shooter cameras going all the way back to the classic GR1 released in 1997.The GR is a very small camera equipped with a large 16MP APS-C sensor and a high quality fixed 18.3mm (28mm equivalent) f/2.8 lens. The sensor does not have an AA filter for super sharp images.Speaking of the lens, it is superb. Very little distortion and very sharp wide open. In fact, I see no reason to stop down whatsoever unless you need more depth of field. It has good close focus ability, though at 28mm, I wouldn't call it a 'macro' lens. That said, I find the bokeh to be pretty smooth when focused closely. All in all, a first class optic in my opinion. The camera has a tough alloy body with a grippy textured outer surface and a generous and comfortable grip. The large display on the back is very bright and very usable in most conditions, through can be a little harder to see fine details in bright, direct sunlight. While the specs are fantastic, what makes makes this camera truly great is the GR heritage and DNA that is so evident in the camera's design and implementation. Just do a web search on "Ricoh GR1" and you will instantly see the family resemblance, and with good reason - the original design, control layout and ergonomics were excellent. Successive GR models refined the basic design over the years, up to and including the previous GR Digital IV. The new GR retains all of the best traits and expands on the original theme in meaningful ways. This camera is a shooters dream and is designed to get out of your way and let you concentrate on what's important. Operation is fast and responsive and I never get the feeling of waiting for the camera. Everything is at your fingertips and logically laid out. Best of all, even with all of the new technology packed in, the GR is still small enough to fit in your pocket! The only word of warning - the GR series sports a highly configurable and customizable user interface. This is the first camera in years that I've had to read the manual for to learn how to set up and use. While getting started will take some work and patience, you will be rewarded with a camera that does exactly what you need it to do.As a point of comparison, I am a Nikon D800 user and love the camera and the results I get from it. I wanted something smaller for family and travel and very seriously considered the Nikon Coolpix A. I really liked pretty much everything about the Coolpix, which is very similar specification wise to the Ricoh, however the gestalt of the Ricoh, combined with the signifigantly lower price swayed me. And I'm very happy it did!

I've owned this camera for over a year and its has yielded me some of the best images i've shot on the street with it. I mean what else could you ask for? APS-C sensor, 16mp decent low light ability and a very very fast AF system in good light and its almost the size of my iphone 5s (just thicker) and fits in my back pocket. Cons: It hunts alot in low light, I get away with using it at night setting it to snap focus and flash but it takes a bit to focus in low low light. The biggest issue is the dust issue. These cameras love dust more than my Dslr likes it when i walk around with the sensor exposed on my DSLR. Dust will get into the lens when it retracts back in unless you protect it with a UV filter. That being said only 2 places in the USA will repair it and give you a warranty after. Be prepared to spend -$$ for sensor cleaning. One is good and slightly more money (my body is out of warranty) and the other repair center never picks up its phone (its in CT) and has horrible reviews on google (google it you'll see who). Its really sad because I love using this camera but the spot will not disappear even at f2.8.

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

Such great sharp pictures I no longer feel the need to carry a large DSLR for a "better picture".I like the snap focus mode, good for quick street shots.I had doubts about the wide angle only, but that has not been a problem. In fact, it is an asset to photograph the beautiful murals in SF's Mission district.

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

Ricoh GR is really a nice camera because of its light weight, which is convenient for people to carry everyday, and its excellent performance on documenting social life. For four reasons that GR is perfect for documenting: 1. Color: the color is very important because it determines the tone of the image. If you like to record what happened on the street, the color of GR creates will give you feeling of social life, which is boring but interesting. 2. Lens: Ricoh's lens is fixed, and the focal length of it is very suitable for recording social life around us. It can contains a lot of information in an image. So the image will have special visual levels. 3. The shutter speed is not delayed at all and the sound of the shutter can be turned off (it is gorgeous for street snapshot!!!!!!). So you will not miss any interesting moment that you observe on the street. 4. The length of time to open the camera is extremely short, which means that once you get target on the street, you can open the camera in 0.5sec and shoot the moment. Otherwise, also because of the color, focal length and the aperture, GR it is not ideal to be used by learners who just want to record travel, food, or beautiful flowers. The color is not vivid enough for food or flowers; the focal length and the aperture cannot focus on details of food. For the conclusion, I just want to say that if you interested in recording social/street life, have already known a lot about the camera, and have used camera very proficiently, you should definitely buy a Ricoh GR and you will deeply love it just as I do. If you just want to buy a camera for food, flower, or selfie, don't consider about Ricoh GR because it will let you down.

I really like this camera. I own the original 8mp Gr D and the basic design has changed very little. It is the only camera I've encountered that seems designed from scratch to be used as a self-enclosed unit. By that I mean : The owner can charge the battery, convert RAW files, download files to the computer in a simple, straight forward manner without "disassembling" the camera. Other cameras will do these things, but not in as intuitive a manner.

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

I typically tote around a Nikon pro or semi-pro, and right now (after ~1 week of use), my favorite thing about this Ricoh GR is that it is TINY in comparison. I LOVE that it fits in my pocket, and that it is inconspicuous (on the street, in a museum, when dining out, etc.).

I also really like it's capacity to take clear photos in low light, without too much color distortion.

Things I need to use more before having more of an opinion:
              1. I've used the video function, but have only viewed the results in-camera. Need to download, process, and play with the video to know better how good it is. Thus, no idea re audio, yet, either.

              2. When zooming in on an image (after taking it; there's no zoom on the camera itself), the images look horribly pixelated. I need to fiddle some with photos on the computer, and see how they do when enlarged. If it turns out that enlargements aren't an option, I will be deeply disappointed. I'm optimistic, since the camera shoots RAW and RAW+, that the pixelation and noise I see in-camera are just that - in-camera only.

If the second issue turns out to be a non-issue, this could wind up being my go-to camera for a lot of street and event photography. I am a freelance photojournalist specializing in science and sustainability, and it will be immensely helpful to have an inconspicuous camera that takes great images.

Ricoh GR is excellent camera for demanding users. Outstanding IQ, fast response, solid construction is what I like most. Inconspicuous look and 18mm focal lenght are ideal for me - I`m photoessay photographer. One wish: battery life could be longer.

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

This camera has changed my life I only wish I bought it sooner! The picture quality is so clear and crisp the photos look professionally taken with little experience needed!
Doing a lot of travel it really is worth having a good camera -the expense you take to travel it is more than worth having excellent quality pictures to match.
You only realize how poor other camera qualities are after you see the difference with this camera!
100% happy with this purchase truly worth the investment and you will never regret it!

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

Street photography, an amazing 28mm lens, with great depth of field f9 at 3 meters to infinity all in focus. The "snap focus" (pre-focus at specific distance), in combination with the depth of field, ensures that everything is tack-sharp, to capture 1/1000th decisive moments on the street without an lag. Even if you use auto-focus that is very quick too.The sensor is amazing, the auto-ISO function which calculates automatically the sensitivity based on the light and your aperture / shutter speed settings is great. I've have street shots at f/9 with 1/300 speeds where the ISO shot up to 6200, and I've cropped 50% with no noise visible, amazing !I have neve felt the way I felt for this about another camera I've owned before (and I've owned my fair share in 25 years as photographer). Worth every single dollar spend on it.

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

I love this camera! It's lightweight, compact, has decent presets and performs reasonably well in low light. This is my first "real" camera, so I'm still learning all the extensive features. I primarily bought this to take on bike rides... it is the perfect jersey pocket-sized camera. I've found it fast enough to snap pics while on the move, both of moving and stationary objects. The rubberized grip gives me the confidence to pull it out on the fly. I've also used the camera to take some photos of food in dimly lit restaurants and night markets and I am impressed with this camera's low light performance. The battery life isn't great, but it was sufficient for a weekend of shooting.

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

After reading lots of reviews and articles and analyzing the latest work I've been doing I realized 28mm is one of the focal lenghts I use the most when I'm out in the street shooting.I currently own a 5dmkIII which is great for almost all the work i do, which mainly involves video. The thing about it is it's size, is just too big to be carried all around all the time, the GR is just perfect. It is small, well built, easy to use, and discreet. I put it in my jean's pocket and ride my bike and the GR is always ready to shoot with it's "snap focus" feature.I use it for scoutings, street shoooting, travel and just for everyday use.The only con I find with this thing is it's short battery life; It's incredibly short. When I bought it I decided to test it first since I had read lots of commentaries concerning this problem, now I'm about to order a couple of extra batteries, because it just drains so quickly I can't rely on it for lasting a whole day.All in all, it's a perfect small, lightweight, pocketable camera. When your iPhone is not enough, get this thing.

I was considering a Nikon Coolpix A or a Fuji x100S but in process discovered the GR. It has the same size sensor and is much lighter than the other two. Ergonomically it is perfect in terms of controls and settings. Pictures are super and WB controls work great. Best value and professional always count on B & H.

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

I gave this camera 4 stars instead of 5 just because I prefer the options of a zoom and don't shoot a lot of landscapes. But other than the focal length, which I was aware of when I bought it, I can't find any faults with the Ricoh.
                  Things I like:
Solid, well made, great natural colors, fits in purse or pocket, easy to use.
                  Things I don't like:
Nothing really except the fixed focal length and wish the lens was a bit brighter.

The GR is exactly what I have been desiring for a long time... big sensor in a small body, no gimmicks like a viewfinder, tilt screen or a zoom. I really was excited to use it.When it gets it right the photos are lovely.Unfortunately, I am experiencing a tragic back focusing problem under almost all shooting conditions. The focus assist light doesn't help at all. Will have to figure out an alternative.

This camera is good, great file quality both in JPEG and RAW.
only slight issues is the focus system at night. A bit of a hit an miss and you cannot rely on it. Other than that very good for outdoors and interior pics. Certainly one i will keep for a while

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

Finally, two decades into the digital transformation of consumer photography, we have a point-and-shoot that produces images of technical quality comparable to those from a "pro" (D)SLR. The original Ricoh GR-1 could produce slides that vied with those from any of the then current SLRs equipped with their bulky 28mm lenses, and this digital camera is as good or better than any APS-C DSLR with a lens of this (equivalent) focal length. Not surprising, since the sensor is the same and the lens is a dedicated 28 mm-e. The control interface is superb. The lack of an OVF and IBIS are limitations. The tripod hole is placed too close to the battery compartment. This last is a problem if you carry this as your only backcountry camera and want to do, for instance night photography.

The cameras larger sensor, f/2.8 lens and computer make a fast little camera to capture my toddler. I was constantly deleting blurry images on my DSLR and my other Point & Shoot. Not with Ricoh GR. The camera's auto focus is so quick I am rarely left with a bad picture.

The camera has so many manual features too. It can keep your dslr enthusiast happy with so many options. Built in filters and long exposure programing keep my deeply technical side happy too. A quick flip to auto lets you snap away without worry too.

Comments about Ricoh GR Digital Camera:

Camera is a joy to use, very small (fits in my pocket rather well), and the quality of the pictures is very impressive. I certainly recommend it if you want a good travel/light camera.
