Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

Got this mic to replace my first mic for a web instructional project my brother and I are working on. After researching mics at B&H and looking at the Shure website the impresion I got was of a quality company with quality products. When I first got the mic and opened the box the quality of the packaging confirmed the initial impression of the company.Removing the mic from the box the all metal body and build quality is what I was looking for. The enclosed cable is quality and it comes with a printed manual. Also ordered the Shure Fur Windjammer cover and that came in it's own box.The real test came with using it. The double A batteries are readily available and easy to replace with solid access doors. The Micro SD card allows for use as a stand alone mic or to back up your camera audio. Having the LCD display provides graphic feedback on your audio settings and battery life. The audio settings provide a wide range of flexibility.Recording quality is outstanding as is the ease of use.The bottom line is that you are buying quality and if you can fit it in your budget, I highly recommend it.

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

Sound quality(both clarity and strength), and ease of use, are absolutely "as advertised". Glad I bought it.

And the sound that is sent to be recorded to my Canon Vixia audio file is just as good as the sound of the file recorded on-board the mic.

I suspect that for most people, they will want to turn the audio-in on their camera down about as low as they can, because the SHURE sends a very strong signal. Even with the SHURE Gain set at about half (30 or 60).

If you hate your camcorder's sound, buy this puppy. You will almost certainly be glad you did.

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

It's built like a tank, sounds fantastic, and the ability to record crystal clear and hiss-free audio directly to memory is a killer feature. The pass-through signal can be set quite strong which allows the horrible DSLR preamps to be turned way down as well, eliminating most hiss when recording to camera too! It's well balanced and well designed (if a bit heavy due to the all-metal body... which is a good thing in general). Battery life is so-so at best; I can't record a whole wedding day on NiMH rechargeables but surprisingly I can generally on alkalines. My only real complaints are the needlessly complicated battery/microSD compartment (why a door within a door??) and the lack of a USB port (requiring you to physically remove the microSD card every time you wish to transfer files). But I can overlook those flaws due to the amazing performance of the device itself... a definite keeper!!

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

One of the most solid and well built devices I've owned in a long time. It really has everything you could ask for in a product of this type at this price. The headphone jack and the visual levels meter for monitoring audio was perfect for my DLSR.

Only downside was formatting flash cards... if your on a Mac you need to partition your cards using Apple Disk Utility; MBR (partition) + Xfat. Then the device will give an error when reading the card but then you can reformat it using the internal Shure utility. In another other format the Shure mic will give an error when reformatting the card.

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

I've always loved shure microphones, and the quality it brings, so when i got the news of this new LensHopper I had to get it!
I've been using this LensHopper mic with my Nikon coolix P7700 to capture interviews and live performances, and I must say that it really have made a huge difference in the sound quality of my recordings. It blocks out the majority of those noisy backgrounds, and gives the subjuct a much warmer, richer tone. I also love the ability to record the sound separately while sending audio to the camera- Super kool! Oh, and the transfer for editing in post production is a breeze. Love it!... I gave it four stars 'cause there's always room for improvement ;)

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

I wanted a good audio device (shotgun style) for my blackmagic pocket camera, but didn't want to buy an external recorder and a shotgun (too expensive for me and hard to use in solo). I know that bmpcc preamp is kinda poor, so I wanted an alternative solution to a direct microphone. This product is the answer! Not only it's giving the bmpcc a way better internal audio (you have to put 0% input level and lower a little bit your mic to have better result), but the audio on the microSD card is even better!

Otherwise, it's made of metal, it's solid, and looks great on a bmpcc cage.

For the "clicking sound" issue, it's only true when shaking the camera... I do not expect to use this kind of footage anyway so it's okay (and I should believe that every cold shoemount microphone have this kind of problem... I guess).

Not going to replace a real shotgun or a wireless lavaliere, but it worked better than I thought it would. I was especially surprised that it didn't pick up much autofocus noise. I hope I live long enough to see high quality audio and audio controls integrated into DSLRs.

STRONG BUILD! Suspension system is solid, cold shoe mount it great. Worth it's weight which is very manageable. Great mic with great sound and nice on-board controls. Two real pluses, the onboard mini sd card for direct recording, (and playback), and a headphone jack for Canon D1X users and Nikon bodies without a audio-out jack. Fits and balances well on 5-D Mark III. Optional wind screen (dead-cat) fits snugly over existing foam screen for further wind noise cancelation. Great Product!

I choose this shotgum mic over the others in its price range for it's metal construction, flash recording capability, and relatively nice user interface compared to the others I looked at, which included the most comparable RØDE mics. I am happy with my choice and recommend this product.

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

I have yet to compare it with similar mic's (meaning DSLR specific mic's as this is still the only one in it's class that has the ability to record) but the build, the functionality the display are all perfect... It is a little heavier than I would like BUT I would not sacrifice the weight if it made the mic more fragile... I like the solid metal build... the front door is a bit "odd" getting to the microSD card and the batteries can be a bit challenging ESPECIALLY when you have the optional SURE / RYCOTE Windjammer. I plan on using this with my JuicedLinked RM333 in unison with the onboard flash recording... this way I will have a constant track from the LensHopper that can then snap everything (my lav's, my handheld Tascam, and the LensHopper) in sync using plural eyes...I will report back with how this theoretical workflow works in real life.

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

I bought the vp83 version first, and realize that
I better just go with the vp83f with build-in recording feature. So I exchanged to the vp83f.
This device has very professional looking. feel solid. The menu is very intuitive. I can change setting very fast.
So why build-in reocording? seems redundant, right?
The main purpose for me is for capture unintentional dialogue from any events. Many times you were't recording video for some reasons. Maybe you think that part is not important for your editing. but there might be some interesting dialogue occurs. and you missed it. you might use some part of the dialogue for editing. so this vp83f come handy. you can just let it rolling for entire events. and you won't miss any dialogue. You can later use any part of the audio for editing. This is the main purpose for me to buy this vp83f.
The only feature it miss for me is the limiter. It is important to prevent clipping.
Also how come no pouch included..Man for this price, it should include.

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

I had just purchased the Rode Videomic Pro when I bumped into a friend who wouldn't stop singing the praises of the VP83F. And, sure enough, after taking the VideoMic on a test run, the little rubber shock mounts seemed poorly attached and designed.

I returned the VideoMic and used my balance (plus a little extra cash) to buy the VP83F and I haven't looked back. The build seems much sturdier than the VideoMic and I don't worry about having to reattach the shock mount. I love the recorder, too. No more DSLR-hiss from the pre-amps from recording to camera. All in all, a great little mic that's a wonderful addition to my 5D.

Only con would be battery life. It's strongly reduced by the LCD display, but just buy some rechargeable AA's and keep them handy and it shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience.

The design, build quality, ease-of-use and durability are impressive! I haven't used in the field yet but was immediately compelled to write a review on this one and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality run-and-gun mic...but only if you don't have the money in the budget for a sound person. It's a bit heavy though, a small price to pay for a solid piece of gear.

Comments about Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recorder:

I purchased this mic to capture quality sound for my 5D II. I literally opened the box on a Friday and and shot a wedding with it the next day. Everything worked extremely well. The build quality is solid and feels very durable for the long term. I used the mic to record to my camera for syncing in post but the power of this mic is to record straight to its micro-sd card.

It works perfectly for capturing solid audio on the run. I also recommend purchasing a deadcat, Shure hadn't released it so I bought a rode deadcat and it worked great.

                                  Have fun recording!
