Photogenic Umbrella - "Eclipse" Silver with Black Cover - 60"

B&H # PHUE60S Mfr # 909375
In Stock
Free Expedited Shipping on Orders over $49
You Pay: $48.95

This Photogenic 60" Eclipse Umbrella with black backing has an extra silver panel added during construction. The result is the elimination of the reflection of the metal frame of the umbrella in the eyes of your subject, or on highly reflective surfaces, such as chrome or brass.

This size is perfect for portraits of small groups of people, and medium sized product set ups.

This umbrella is designed for use with strobe lighting.

Softens and broadens the light output of any strobe or lower wattage constant light.
A silver umbrella will add specular highlights -- a little bit more "snap", than a white umbrella.
May add 1/2 to 1 F-Stop of light output, depending on the light source used.

Comments about Photogenic Umbrella - "Eclipse" Silver, Black Cover - 60":

Good umbrella for a larger group. I used two speedlite flashes for each of my two umbrellas for a black family for an indoor photo shoot.

I needed the silver reflectence because I needed more light for their faces. This does not leave spoke shadows. Also, their eyes don't leave that spider web look because the spokes don't show. The eyes show a nice almost perfect circle. I also used CFL constant lighting along with the umbrella flashes. The lower placed contant lighting took out the facial shadows when shot at slower speeds. It all worked out pretty good. They really liked the portraits. These umbrellas give studio results on a part time photographers budget.

Comments about Photogenic Umbrella - "Eclipse" Silver, Black Cover - 60":

In one case, the umbrella fell and the plastic tip to keep the black backing on broke. Very cheap and fragile.

In another case, the umbrella has not been abused and did not fall, but the black backing has been tearing at the central seams around the plastic tip and is now basically worthless as a bounce umbrella.

Light quality was OK while they lasted (a few months, fairly light use - 5-10 times each)

Not really happy with these. I am looking at a new 16-rib umbrella next.

Comments about Photogenic Umbrella - "Eclipse" Silver, Black Cover - 60":

This is a relatively inexpensive umbrella for it's size, which is why I'm being gracious and giving it three stars.

My biggest complaint is that after just a couple of months of very light use, the thing is starting to come apart. The interior silver lining is stitched to the inner tines (this is what gives the umbrella its shape), and that inner stitching is starting to come undone.

I don't have a permanent studio, which means I do open and close this umbrella every time I use it. Maybe if I had a permanent studio and left it set up this would not be a problem.

I'm shopping now for a replacement. I'll be spending a little more and hope that I get something with a little better construction.

All my umbrellas were white with black covers. So I wanted to try something different and had read that silver was good for larger groups. So I went looking for something in silver in my price range and found this one.

It is solidly built, great construction. The light this umbrella produces is great! I may never use white again, ha ha.

I wanted a 60" Silver umbrella. I thought the design of the Eclipse would be an advantage since the ribs are covered. It turns out that the ribs still show up pretty good in catch lights and I wasn't very satisfied with the construction of the umbrella. It just didn't seem that it would last very long so I sent it back.

Purpose: Outdoor portraits, with small speedlights (SB-800) on a boom-stand.

Pros: Cheap, Big, versatile, fast and easy to set up.

Cons: Very weak and unusable in windy conditions, no-wind-or-nothing. Heavy counter-weight or assistant needed for hold/secure it.

ps: perfect in studio/interrior with high ceillings.

I love the 60 inch(2) size I purchased. Throws some nice even lighting. Used a pair for some group dance shots. Always easier to use than comparable size softboxes and just as nice of lighting.
The covered ribs are a nice feature when shooting headshots, don't show up in the catchlights of the eyes.
