With Scott Kelby's Light / Shoot / Retouch It B&H has put together a host of Elinchrom equipment that features power, flexibility and creative potential.

The heart of this kit is another kit: the BRX 500/500 2-Light To Go Kit that features two 500W/s BRX 500 monolights, two light stands, an EL Skyport Speed Transmitter and two 26 x 26" softboxes. You also get a sync cord, a bag to protect your light stands and a carrying case for storing and transporting the heads. The multi-voltage 500W/s heads have five-stop power variability and fast 1.45 sec. recycling. They also boast built-in Skyport receivers that can pick up a signal from the included EL Skyport Speed Transmitter from up to 393' away. The BRX 500s also come with two 9.0' light stands with case a sync cord and kit case.

Using this gear as a core setup, B&H continues to build on it with the inclusion of a 53" Midi Octa Light Bank; a large light shaping tool with a special quality of light that is especially useful in portraiture. A 14 x 35" Rotalux Strip Bank is an ideal combination with the Octa as a main light with the strip bank serving as a hair light, side light or rim light.

But this is not just a soft-effect kit. For those who need a bit of directionality, detail and grit, the kit also includes a 17" Softlite reflector as well as a 7.0" grid reflector. The Softlite reflector is a medium sized beauty dish that disperses the light via its interior deflector to its soft white interior. The result is a light with a fair amount of directionality that combines soft light quality with crisp rendition of detail. If you want to soften it more, a fabric diffuser is on hand to slip over the Softlite. The 7.0" grid reflector has a convenient lip built into the front of it to accept the included spring-loaded 7.0" grids. Three grids are included: a 30 degree, 20 degree and 12 degree. The lower the number in degrees the tighter the soft circle of light that it will project. A gel holder is also included.

Comments about Elinchrom Scott Kelby's Light / Shoot / Retouch it Kit:

This kit has great products in it. The rotalux modifiers are excellent. I added a 3rd mono light and it works flawlessly.

Comments about Elinchrom Scott Kelby's Light / Shoot / Retouch it Kit:

The set is awsome, the range of modifiers and the quality of light is great. The price is a deal for what you get. The use is easy and the modifiers are brilliantly easy to set up and offer superb light quality. Why a 1? I have had these for about 3 years now. I shoot regularly, but not that much with these specific lights, and the specific set I am referring to were used only on average 2/month as the studio I shoot at has also decided to adopt Elinchrome. Also a mistake (see below). As I write this review, I brought them on an international trip to shoot more intensively with them, what a mistake. The problem is this - the firing. They progressively fire less and less, over time, despite the electronics recognizing the signals from the Skyport. So you hear the trigger (and the back of the strobe indicates recycling is happening, but many times I can take 8-10 shots before the strobe fires AND this is with all units so it is impossible to meter as you may have one, two, or three go off. I added one to the Kelby set. Is is purely random fire. At the studio, that had adopted Elinchrome based on my recommendation - had a similar issue and fluids actually leaked out from inside. Looked like an oil but when getting repaired it had something to do with a capacitor. A quick search online also reveals many others have the same issue. So unless you want to develop patience shooting, making excuses for why your lights are not somehow either firing or sequencing with your shutter - avoid Elinchrome. That's about all I can say. When they work, a charm they are - and you will be questioning my review. I hope that you can never have my issue and wonder what I was writing about. I wish that for you. I also wish you don't need to go through what I am going through as came to NY to do a series of fashion shoots and am getting better at giving excused for my appearing inability to use a strobe. It is frustrating, it is embarrassing, it is Elinchrome. Out of the box they were fine - not an issue for a year or so. I am contacting them now - and if they deal with or explain this issue, I will update this review.

Comments about Elinchrom Scott Kelby's Light / Shoot / Retouch it Kit:

The products within the kit are great "as they are". I would recommend the lights and stands and some of the additional items.

I should have done a bit more research on the soft boxes. There appear to be no compatible eggcrates/modifiers available for these items beyond what's in the box. Given Kelby talks about the use of modifiers in his lighting videos, I didn't give a thought to getting items I couldn't add to.

Pleased with what I have, but disappointed in the limitations.
