In combination with the BIONZ image processor, the 20.4MP CMOS sensor provides sharp imaging and fast autofocus speeds. The Sony G 30x optical zoom lens has a 35mm format focal length equivalency of 24-720mm which means its powerful zoom covers a full range of shooting situations from true wide angle to ultra-telephoto. In addition, the BIONZ image processor creates Clear Image Digital Zoom which allows you to double the optical zoom range for extreme close-ups and distant image capture.

The HX50V also supports Full HD 1080p video capture in the AVCHD format. This is high grade video resolution that allows smooth recording of moving subjects and, combined with the long zoom lens, is a potent movie maker in such a compact body. Smaller video resolutions are also provided in M4 format for easier playback on computers and portable devices. In both still and video modes, the HX50V provides optical image stabilization. The high-performance capabilities of the HX50V include fast continuous shooting of up to 10 fps in full resolution, full manual exposure with P/A/S/M modes and a dedicated exposure compensation dial. The camera also features a multi-interface hot shoe for attaching accessories such as an external flash. microphone or electronic viewfinder. Of course, the HX50V is also very manageable as a point-and-shoot, with Intelligent Auto to make picture taking easy and other assistive modes such as Background Defocus, Face Detection and Scene Modes such as Gourmet, to automatically adjust the camera's settings for a particular kind of subject. A pop-up flash is built-in and several Picture Effects let you add creative touches to your images.

I cannot understand why there have been so few reviews of this camera on the big review sites. Perhaps it's because of the new management structure at Sony but finally they have started listening to what the customer wants. This camera harks back to the good old days when a Sony produced good, clear, sharp, usable photos. Sure, if you pixel-peek at full size you will see distortions and so on but why do you need to? I suspect the people who print photos bigger than A4 are very few and far between and the number who have screens which will show any distortions at normal screen sizes are almost zero. Of course, this camera does not equal the RX100's quality ( I have one) but it wins hands down on versatility. In reasonable light, even the long end of the zoom is good and the macro is stunning, especially as you can zoom in to 5x (equivalent of portrait on a DSLR) and still focus down to about 2cm/1in. Turn the noise reduction down and any 'watercolouring' at normal settings is minimal - a huge improvement over the HX9, for example. Colour is exceptionally good.
I have been a long-term Sony user but rather reluctantly so over the last few years until the RX100 came along. My Alpha and all the lenses are now all lying unused in drawer - why lug that lot when I can get very close to the same results with two little 'toy' cameras? Given the obvious restrictions of a small-sensor camera, it is hard to think of anything negative about this little gem.

This is a very versatile piece of equipment, used on hikes for telephoto, macro, landscapes even low light by the fireside. as well as shooting broadcast video when a large camera would have been too obtrusive.

Major issues I have had are that it now has dust on the sensor after only a few uses, making it too unreliable for any professional use.
Also auto focus will not work in lowlight ... manual focus is not an option on video setting.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

-This camera had become my default camera. I carry it in my pocket at all times to capture those unexpected moments. -The super zoom is really great, goes from fairly wide angle, ~24m, m to near 700mm+ (35 mm equivalent)-Of course it has optical IS and also multiple exposure to reduce blurr and noise and low light exposures. Both work really well.-The great, ~20 MP sensor comes handy to create detailed photos and also if cropping is needed.-I find that low light exposures tend to be a bit noisy, but there is no escape to that.-My main gripe with these cameras is the lack of a viewfinder as the LCD is unreadable in many situations due to outdoors light. But this is nto any different thatn similar cameras.-The grip feels good, the basic controls accessible and the screen is very informative and has verious modes.-It can accommodate external flash (it has a multi purpose shoe) and has a pop up one.-It is great for wildlife photography due to the large zoom. I have taken it hiking and camping, as it is so compact, yet powerful.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

No regrets about this purchase. Durable build (I dropped it once, from hip level onto concrete, and it still worked....not that I want to do that again). Sharp pictures and really good video in a wide range of conditions, including low light. Excellent image stabilization. Long lasting battery, which was a great boon as I was travelling in areas where I couldn't charge the camera for days on end. The amazing zoom has proven more useful than I thought it could be, as well as the panorama function (which the Canon cameras I had been considering lacked). I though about getting a DSLR, but I'm glad I got this instead: even a small DSLR would have been too much to haul around.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

I have had the HX-50 for 3 weeks. Fits in my belt pack just fine... with me 24/7. New suprises all the time WIFI, remote shutter timer, or remote radio shutter control. Clear at full zoom. Using an adapter for 37mm filters, the IR filters down to 850 nm works well, 950 nm in bright sun. Love the 30X zoom for birds. USB will accept triggers. HDMI output handy for table top macro.Only con... needs a 58mm push on protective cap. I have one from a lense or binocular, not sure.

We had the HX9V but it got wet and we had to replace it. If we had known how good this was we would have bought it sooner. Takes fantastic pictures and is extremely easy to use. I use my DSLR (Sony DLT-65) and my wife uses this. Her pictures are just as good if not better than mine. I'm jealous.

the worst thing I can say about this camera is it is made by Sony, cause sony support is the worst.

I bought the camera two months ago in anticiaption of a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons. It exceeded my expectations. With the 30x zoom I was able to get great "close up" photos of wildlife and scenery even without a tripod. the camera was small enough to keep in my pocket, focused quickly and handled multiple types of lighting with ease.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

Have been with this camera for over 3 months now. Bought it for video purposes. It works excellent for what I bought it for. When recording it focuses pretty nice! When doing macro on recording mode it's a little bit slow but that's not a problem for me. The quality of the voice on videos is excellent also. Pictures quality are excellent & the fact that it has a 30x zoom it's amazing!! Definitely recommend this versatile camera. It's handy & has all you are looking for!!

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

This is a very versatile piece of equipment, used on hikes for telephoto, macro, landscapes even low light by the fireside. as well as shooting broadcast video when a large camera would have been too obtrusive.

Major issues I have had are that it now has dust on the sensor after only a few uses, making it too unreliable for any professional use.
Also auto focus will not work in lowlight ... manual focus is not an option on video setting.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

I use this camera while hiking and walking to take pictures of nature and keep a GPS record of location. The image quality, zoom, and image stabilization are excellent. Even at 60X zoom, the image shows little camera movement. Exposure and GPS are accurate. Cons are the display which is diffiult to see in sunlight even at its brightest setting. A viewfinder would be nice, but the price of the accessory viewfinder is exhorbitant. Another con is the cover to the battery compartment - it is awkward to close and sometimes pops open unexpectedly. Another con is the occasional error message, "Reinsert memory card", when the memory card is firmly inserted. This requires you to open the compartment, pull out and reinsert the card, resulting in missed shots. All in all, the positives outweigh the negatives.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

              Great:
-The 30X zoom is excellent with sharp optics, little distortion.
-The 20 Mpixel chip become really handy to keep high resolution and matches the optics well.
-Relatively easy to use at basic levels (more later)
-A bit heavy, but feels solid, good grip.
              -Most controls nicely accessible
-Nice display, good resolution, sharp, plenty of info to make decissions on shot, like histogram, etc.
              -Excellent battery life
-Image stabilization works great, took handheld photos at 750 mm (30x) and came out really sharp

              Not so Great:
-Manual is bad, little info on how to set basic things suh as picture resolution. Had to go online to Sony.
-Changing setings at a deeper level can be a challenge (to find how) except shooting mode and exposure (nice thumbwheel for that)
-Under low light conditions, soem pictures can be grainy (more than expected) still working on determining what/where/when.
-Autofocus a bit laggy...nothing too extreme

              General Comment:
-Wish manufacturers of these superzoom, almost pro cameras, realized that the LCD screen is crippling in almost any daylight situation. Some sort of viewfinder is needed

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

I'm disgusted with this camera. Photos are OK for a point and shoot camera. However, I bought it to have all in one photo / video. I liked the idea of having a telephoto zoom for video. The problem with the camera is primarily the video quality. It takes up to five seconds to focus every time you move the view, the audio clips (distorts) very easily, and the video is noisy. The video lacks life and color, even at highest quality settings. I'm also disgusted with the limited options for both photo and video, even in the advanced mode there isn't much to adjust.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

The image quality in bright light (low ISO) is very good. The clarity of the lens is good throughout the range of the zoom. Distortion and other artifacts seem well controlled for this type, size and price of lens. Above ISO 400 the noise is high and the detail decreases rapidly. I guess I shouldn't expect much more from a 1/3.2 sensor with a lens aperture of f6.3 (at the long end). The LCD screen has good resolution and color but is almost unusable in bright sunlight. Overall, not a bad little camera for the size and price, with a strong zoom lens. However, its low light performance and the fact that the LCD is not useable in bright sunlight (and no viewfinder) seriously limits the usefulness of this camera. Video quality is not bad for this type of camera.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera:

I bought this camera for my 70+ year old mother in law. She loves to travel, do long hikes but also loves photography. I wanted to get her something that was small but still had a fair amount of zoom. We just put this camera through it's paces on a trip to Patagonia. I was pretty amazed at some of the photos she got. While I was lugging around my SLR and heavy lenses, she got some shots that were pretty awesome. The camera does really well in daylight and took great zoom and macro photos. The only drawback is that it doesn't perform as well in low light as my sony RX100 or Fuji x20. For what it is, it's a great little camera.
