The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon is a wide-angle to normal-length zoom lens that features a fast, bright constant f/1.8 maximum aperture. It is specifically designed for use with APS-C-sized sensors and provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-52.5mm.

The lens integrates four aspherical elements into its construction as well as five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements to help minimize various aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range as well as provide greater image sharpness and clarity. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting to produce images with higher contrast and color fidelity. The lens barrel design is constructed from a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material that is akin to metal in texture and resistance to temperature and environmental changes while also remaining lightweight and compact. An internal focusing and zooming mechanism also helps to maintain a compact and consistent overall length and non-rotating front ring also better enables the use of circular polarizing filters. For control of focus, a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) is used to ensure fast, precise, and quiet focusing capabilities that are well suited to continuous shooting and movie recording.

For updating lens firmware and fine-tuning its nuances to best suit your personal shooting, this lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock. The dock allows you to specify certain parameters and other settings through the Sigma Optimization Pro software, such as AF speed and focusing limitations.

Art Lens Line
This lens is part of Sigma's Art line; deeming it well-suited to creative image making due to its large, constant f/1.8 maximum aperture and ability to produce aesthetic bokeh by way of a nine-blade circular diaphragm. The range of focal lengths it covers, from wide-angle to normal-length, is nicely situated for everyday and artistic shooting applications.
Optimized Lens Design
Four aspherical lens elements, as well as the incorporation of five SLD glass elements, help to minimize the appearance of distortions and aberrations throughout the zoom range and provide clear imagery with enhanced sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating also benefits the image quality by reducing reflections and flare and contributing to greater overall contrast and fidelity.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The Hyper Sonic Motor provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications. This AF motor can also be manually overridden at any time by rotating the focusing ring, giving you the ability to fine-tune image sharpness through manual focusing.
USB Dock
Compatible with Sigma's USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software for fine-tuning your lens' performance, updating its firmware, and better suiting it to your needs.
Other Lens Features
  • Constructed using a TSC compound material, this lens is lightweight while also exhibiting notable durability and resistance to environmental changes.
  • An internal focusing and zooming mechanism helps to maintain a consistent overall lens length and a non-rotating front ring facilitates more efficient use of circular polarizers.

The built quality is great. It's silent and sharp. What bothers me is how slow the autofocus is. So slow I can't use it for a real job where fast AF is a must. Also it's bulky and heavy...not comfortable to carry around all day on your neck for sure. Thinking of returning it and get a real pro lens.

    Best lens for DX. Period.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

This lens has some of the most creamiest bokeh I've ever seen. I was about to get a D750, but this lens + D5300 can create some magic. yes, there's art lens for FX. But add the cost of FX camera + both art lens, and you easily are 3x the price of DX combo. Don't just use this lens at f1.8. move to f4 or f8, and compare it to any of your other lens. The colors and contrast that comes out of this lens is unmatched. I love it so much that I now only carry this lens in the past 6 months. Even on my entire Disney trip!!!

Video Considerations, Using with Speed Booster

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

I echo the other reviews on the quality of the lens. Here are some thoughts on my application for video with a Lumix GH4 and a speed booster. The use of a speed booster results in a wider field of view, meaning that zooming in to frame a headshot interview puts the end of my lens about 2 feet from the subject. For me, a 50mm prime gives a more comfortable working distance for this shot. It is a wide zoom lens so if you are considering this lens to replace several other primes, remember that, with a speed booster, it's a little short at the long end of the zoom.

If you're using the lens to capture wide shots outside in the daytime, decide if you need the speed of 1.8. There are less expensive lenses if you're not shooting wide open. f1.8 is great for late evening exteriors and night time city shots.

I'm happy with the lens and will keep it, but with my video setup, I would give up some of the wide end to have a little more reach.

I just got this lens in last week with the primary consideration of landscape and nighttime when I purchased it. I haven't gotten out to do night time yet, but so far this lens has been an absolute joy to work with. The images have been tack sharp with consistent output.

This lens is a hidden gem and well worth the price. The quality that Sigma is putting into their gear is raising the rung higher and higher. This is now my 3rd lens of theirs to my lineup.

This lens is phenomenal ! Extremely sharp, great AF speed and accuracy, pro quality construction and lets not forget the f/1.8. Used on my D7100, this lens has completely replaced my standard 17-50mm lens for indoor and low light applications. For my use, the focal range is perfect and lack of VR hasn't been an issue. The Sigma USB dock is a great tool and makes me feel more secure that this 3rd party lens will continue to be compatible in the future. Yes the lens is heavy, but the upgrade in image quality makes it worth it.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

This is my second take at this lens and it is the best. The reason I returned it the first time was due to its weight and limited zoom.

Since then, I have used at least four different zoom lenses. While those lenses are more flexible in terms of their zoom range and weight, they are limited in image quality.

I finally bought this lens again. It is now a replacement for 20mm, 24mm, 28mm and 35mm prime lenses.

The reason I came back to this lens is that its image quality surpasses all those wide-angle primes. This 18-35mm, 50/1.8 prime and a 70-200/2.8 zoom cover about 95% of my needs.

I use the lens in low light and anytime image quality is top priority. Otherwise, I think twice to carry the weight around.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

After having this lens for about a month, it has become my standard lens for day to day shooting, and only rarely is switched out for something longer. The lens is absolutely amazing. I have it paired with a D7200 and everything works perfectly. Focuses fast and reliably even wide open. Pictures are sharp across all apertures and focal lengths.

With this lens and the D7200 high ISO capability, I am able to shoot my kids, running, indoors, with low light and no flash, and still capture the scene perfectly with a fast shutter and great image quality.

The 2x zoom range is limiting, but I've learned to extend that with the 1.3x crop factor, which I rarely used before, but now have learned to use regularly.

If you are on the fence, buy it.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

I thought the zoom range of the 18-35 F1.8 would be too short. But in use, the zoom range has been just fine. I have been using the lens on a Nikon D7200 for three weeks. The lens is fast, which turns out to be very useful when I use the lens as a walk around lens. The extra speed of the lens allows me to use lower ISO settings in some situations. It really behaves more like a very good prime. The flare characteristics are extremely good for a zoom; it's the best zoom for flare I have ever used. You can do sunsets, no problem. I love to shoot back light so this is a big issue for me. It has the added benefit of very close focus, which adds to the walk around abilities of the optic. Picture quality it top notch. It has become my go to optic for general photography. I am not a sports photographer so auto focus abilities are not as important for me, but so far Autofocus has been fast and accurate. This has replaced my Canon 5D MkIII 24-70 F2.8 MkII setup as my primary setup; mainly because it is lighter and easier to carry around. I have been surprisingly happy with the lens.

        Hi,
I bought this together with the GH4 and Metabones Speedbooster. This is my first DSLR dedicated to video. This lens is solid and smooth in manual settings. Haven't shot much with it yet, but it seems like I'll be using it quite a bit. It's fairly fast aperature makes it ideal for the GH4. I do primarily corporate video work.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

2013 Lens of the Year Award...x3. That's pretty interesting. The very first of its kind zoom with a constant f/1.8 aperture. That's pretty amazing, groundbreaking even. First off, this lens is as sharp as you think it can be; however, with that sharpness comes a warning. Don't use this lens with anything but a superior auto-focus system. Nothing lower than a D7000. The D5300's and below are great cameras, but they don't have the refined auto-focus systems of the Nikon flagship APS-C cameras. What will end up happening is instead of getting tack-sharp focus on the eye, it will be tack-sharp focus on the eyebrow or right above it...unless you use single point auto-focus. There's your caveat. On a D7000/7100, it's incredibly sharp. On rare occasions, I will take it off f/1.8, but the lure of this lens is the incredible image quality and sharpness at f/1.8. This is a replacement lens for someone ready in skill, to set up to full-frame, but without the budget. F/1.8 allows TWICE the light as a f/2.8 lens. My Auto ISO has never reached above 1600. Your pics are going to be grain-free. There was a comparison between perhaps the best zoom lens ever made, the industry benchmark, Nikon 24-70 f/2.8. You could barely tell the difference in bokeh, IQ, and sharpness. What the industry gloats about is that with crop sensor cameras, you get that extra 1.5 zoom range. What they don't tell you is that same 1.5 is also multiplied to the aperture. DxOMark uped the ante with this lens. It's evaluation deemed it to be a f/1.6 lens. 1.6 x 1.5 = 2.4. That's the aperture you are actually getting in comparison to FF cameras. That fast f/2.8 you have is a medium f/4.2 and your f/5.6 zoom lenses, you ready for this, f/8.4. Are you kidding? You will not go wrong with this lens. The one true downside is the weight. Go to your local camera store and either put this lens on your camera, or if they don't have it, Nikon's 24-70. They're roughly the same weight. You have to ask yourself if you are prepared to carry around this lens, camera body, and maybe an extended battery grip (I have large hands) all day on a shoot. It essentially hits the top weight bar for hand holding. Any additional weight and you're looking at a tripod collar. 1.5 lbs is that heavy. Silky smooth zoom ring and full-time manual override focus. Ferrari-type sexiness and construction. I don't mind the lack of image stabilization since I shoot at 1/125 sec or faster. No motion blur there. A minor setback would be the range. Your crop sensored 27-52.5mm range is limiting; however, all you have to do is take a step forward to get additional zoom. Overall, an incredible lens. Happy shooting.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

I really love this lens! I bought it because I work in wedding videography and needed a lens that worked well in low light but gave me the range I was lacking from my primes and I have to say this lens really does that. The only thing I will say is that the auto focus isn't especially fast/accurate. Though manual works fine and I'm not bothered by it I'm sure that would be a major con for others.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

(Used on a Nikon d5200)So far, I'm loving this lens! I'm a portrait photographer, using mostly natural light, and all of my portrait sessions are outdoors. I have wanted to be able to do more lifestyle/photojournalism style, indoor, family sessions. (Think Kirsten Lewis.) I also have three young kids of my own. I always felt that my 50mm, my shortest lens, didn't allow me to thrive in small spaces, like living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, or even hospital rooms (for birth or fresh 48 sessions.) I was always pinned up against a wall! I needed a shorter focal length and a wider angle. I also knew I needed and wanted the lowest aperture available. After a lot of research online, and honestly, asking both Nikon experts and family storytelling experts in facebook groups, this is the lens I decided on. I'm thrilled so far!! I was also considering the 35mm, the 18-55 2.8, and the new nikon 20mm 1.8. This lens is awesome!! I've only used it indoors so far, but I'd love to see what it does outdoors. I feel like I can finally capture the entire scene and I'm not crawling out a window to do it! I think it's the perfect compliment to my longer portrait lenses, and I don't see the need for any other everyday lens. It IS huge and heavy...but not overbearingly so. When I switched on my 50 the other day, it was a huge difference, but I had gotten used to it while it was on (and it's back on!)

It's 3 prime lenses in one! I use this for video on my Panasonic GH4 and it is my primary workhorse lens. It's fast, wide and beautiful. Lens flares look great, super sharp. If you're thinking about buying this lens, do it!NOTE: It's only designed to cover APS-C and smaller, so sorry full frame folks, you'll have to keep looking.

This was the best lens for my buck. The versatility and compatibly is so ideal for me. I DJ so I'm not a a photographer or videographer. However, this lens gives me the freedom to use a zoom lens under low light. I can take it anywhere. Great buy and highly recommend it!

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

I opened this up, as soon as I got it, and was wowed by how fast and silent -the focus makes almost no noise- this lens is.

And then, I began firing off shots and was immediately wowed by the excellent color rendition, the bokeh, and the precise depth of field at f1.8.

I was skeptical that this lens would -as billed- be as sharp across the focal length. And it is.

I can't tell you how happy I am with this lens. I've had it for 2 weeks now and I have yet to put my Nikkor 16-85 back on. This is a particularly appealing focal range.

          Heavy and slow to focus

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

The built quality is great. It's silent and sharp. What bothers me is how slow the autofocus is. So slow I can't use it for a real job where fast AF is a must. Also it's bulky and heavy...not comfortable to carry around all day on your neck for sure. Thinking of returning it and get a real pro lens.
