The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon is a wide-angle to normal-length zoom lens that features a fast, bright constant f/1.8 maximum aperture. It is specifically designed for use with APS-C-sized sensors and provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-52.5mm.

The lens integrates four aspherical elements into its construction as well as five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements to help minimize various aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range as well as provide greater image sharpness and clarity. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting to produce images with higher contrast and color fidelity. The lens barrel design is constructed from a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material that is akin to metal in texture and resistance to temperature and environmental changes while also remaining lightweight and compact. An internal focusing and zooming mechanism also helps to maintain a compact and consistent overall length and non-rotating front ring also better enables the use of circular polarizing filters. For control of focus, a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) is used to ensure fast, precise, and quiet focusing capabilities that are well suited to continuous shooting and movie recording.

For updating lens firmware and fine-tuning its nuances to best suit your personal shooting, this lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock. The dock allows you to specify certain parameters and other settings through the Sigma Optimization Pro software, such as AF speed and focusing limitations.

Art Lens Line
This lens is part of Sigma's Art line; deeming it well-suited to creative image making due to its large, constant f/1.8 maximum aperture and ability to produce aesthetic bokeh by way of a nine-blade circular diaphragm. The range of focal lengths it covers, from wide-angle to normal-length, is nicely situated for everyday and artistic shooting applications.
Optimized Lens Design
Four aspherical lens elements, as well as the incorporation of five SLD glass elements, help to minimize the appearance of distortions and aberrations throughout the zoom range and provide clear imagery with enhanced sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating also benefits the image quality by reducing reflections and flare and contributing to greater overall contrast and fidelity.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The Hyper Sonic Motor provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications. This AF motor can also be manually overridden at any time by rotating the focusing ring, giving you the ability to fine-tune image sharpness through manual focusing.
USB Dock
Compatible with Sigma's USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software for fine-tuning your lens' performance, updating its firmware, and better suiting it to your needs.
Other Lens Features
  • Constructed using a TSC compound material, this lens is lightweight while also exhibiting notable durability and resistance to environmental changes.
  • An internal focusing and zooming mechanism helps to maintain a consistent overall lens length and a non-rotating front ring facilitates more efficient use of circular polarizers.

The built quality is great. It's silent and sharp. What bothers me is how slow the autofocus is. So slow I can't use it for a real job where fast AF is a must. Also it's bulky and heavy...not comfortable to carry around all day on your neck for sure. Thinking of returning it and get a real pro lens.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

I really love this lens! I bought it because I work in wedding videography and needed a lens that worked well in low light but gave me the range I was lacking from my primes and I have to say this lens really does that. The only thing I will say is that the auto focus isn't especially fast/accurate. Though manual works fine and I'm not bothered by it I'm sure that would be a major con for others.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

(Used on a Nikon d5200)So far, I'm loving this lens! I'm a portrait photographer, using mostly natural light, and all of my portrait sessions are outdoors. I have wanted to be able to do more lifestyle/photojournalism style, indoor, family sessions. (Think Kirsten Lewis.) I also have three young kids of my own. I always felt that my 50mm, my shortest lens, didn't allow me to thrive in small spaces, like living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, or even hospital rooms (for birth or fresh 48 sessions.) I was always pinned up against a wall! I needed a shorter focal length and a wider angle. I also knew I needed and wanted the lowest aperture available. After a lot of research online, and honestly, asking both Nikon experts and family storytelling experts in facebook groups, this is the lens I decided on. I'm thrilled so far!! I was also considering the 35mm, the 18-55 2.8, and the new nikon 20mm 1.8. This lens is awesome!! I've only used it indoors so far, but I'd love to see what it does outdoors. I feel like I can finally capture the entire scene and I'm not crawling out a window to do it! I think it's the perfect compliment to my longer portrait lenses, and I don't see the need for any other everyday lens. It IS huge and heavy...but not overbearingly so. When I switched on my 50 the other day, it was a huge difference, but I had gotten used to it while it was on (and it's back on!)

It's 3 prime lenses in one! I use this for video on my Panasonic GH4 and it is my primary workhorse lens. It's fast, wide and beautiful. Lens flares look great, super sharp. If you're thinking about buying this lens, do it!NOTE: It's only designed to cover APS-C and smaller, so sorry full frame folks, you'll have to keep looking.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

I opened this up, as soon as I got it, and was wowed by how fast and silent -the focus makes almost no noise- this lens is.

And then, I began firing off shots and was immediately wowed by the excellent color rendition, the bokeh, and the precise depth of field at f1.8.

I was skeptical that this lens would -as billed- be as sharp across the focal length. And it is.

I can't tell you how happy I am with this lens. I've had it for 2 weeks now and I have yet to put my Nikkor 16-85 back on. This is a particularly appealing focal range.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

This lens is probably one of the most beautiful gifts humanity has bestowed upon the world. Reccommended to me by a cousin and I got it for myself for my birthday-could not be happier! Photos taken by it are crystal clear and maintain an almost glowy pristine-ness. The manual focus is incredibly sensitive and glides seamlessly as you turn it, allowing you to get just the right shot. While it is heavy, and is difficult to tote around, I definitely prefer it over every other lens I've used. Highly reccommended, beautifully made, and amazing clarity. I'm going to take good care of this one. :)

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

This is a good lens. It's very sharp at f1.8, distortion is simple and low and easily corrected with one click, color rendition is excellent, focus is silent and acceptably fast. The lens feels great in the hand, the zoom ring has a nice dampening, and the lens is just 'small' enough that it doesn't feel like a behemoth when walking around. If you want an 18-35mm DX range at f1.8, it's absolutely worth it. Does it replace three primes? For many, yes. I mostly shoot at 18mm or at 35mm, but having that flexibility is wonderful. Would I prefer a 17-50mm f2.8? Nope. The 18-35 is sharper at f1.8, and if you shoot at f1.8 at 35mm and crop the frame in, you get a similar depth of field and sharpness to a comparable 50mm f2.8 zoom lens. The cons? My focus ring has a little bit of play to it. Very minor, but noticeable. Takes away from that whole "super high quality dampening on the rings!" bit that all the reviews talk about. If focusing at closest focus (almost macro distance), the foreground and background will take on two different color tones, and that makes this lens not-so great for close shots of certain things (ex. try shooting at closest focus a page on a book, the letters will all have coloration to them that shouldn't be there). The focus isn't amazingly snappy, but is fast enough (not bad at all). The focus accuracy can occasionally be a little here and there, but I'm a picky guy and I find it to be good. For such an "amazingly built lens", I have no idea why they chose to go with plastic filter threading at the front of the lens.Overall, good buy. Feels a little pricey for a DX lens, but for the enthusiast it can really reduce (or eliminate) the desire to go full frame.

I'll start off with the bad: It's large, and the zoom range is limited.

        That's it.

You want the good? It's fast. It's sharp. It's parfocal. It focuses internally. It focuses close. It's built smooth and solid. Zoom and focus rings are delightful in form and function. It works with Speedbooster adapters on micro-4/3. Quality is solid enough to displace 3 excellent prime lenses in my 'usual kit'... and at a fraction of the price of all 3.

It's a great lens, full stop.

El diseño y calidad de materiales son excelentes y ergonomicamente muy agradable, Un peso que brinda buen soporte, Solo no me gusto que el anillo de enfoque gira contrario a la linea de Nikon.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

I bought this lens a couple weeks ago and wasn't sure whether I'll keep it because a very high (for my budget) price. After two weeks of testing the lens I decided to keep it without any kind of hesitation. I use it shooting portraits, streetscapes and interior' details and everywhere it works beyond my expectations, especially in portraits.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

This lens is well-matched with a crop sensor camera. It is way better than carrying 4 separate prime lenses, with an image quality that can match and most times surpass some high-quality Nikon prime lenses. It is on the heavy side but all good quality lenses are heavier. Some have complained about the short zoom range but that should really not bother anyone as this lens has a good balance between zoom range, weight (size) and wide aperture. I highly recommend it!

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

I purchased the lens to use with the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera. It is a really nice lens. Very well built. It is a little heavy, but I like that.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Nikon:

Knew I wanted this for my kit but didn't realize how it would be used as I have several other lenses in similar focal lengths. The new Sigma 18-35 f:1.8 HSM Art is sharp as a knife. Heavy and the build shows it. Very bright and great contrast. Get it and you'll love it just like I did.
