The H6 Handy from Zoom is a portable handheld recorder and USB audio interface that features an interchangeable microphone system. The recorder ships with both XY and mid-side microphone modules, foam windscreen, 2GB SD card, four AA batteries, USB cable, Cubase LE and a hard carrying case. Optional module attachments can be purchased for expanded functionality.

The H6 Handy allows for versatile recording techniques, giving you several options right out of the box. The included XYH-6 XY microphone module is made up of two matched unidirectional condenser microphones and is intended for capturing accurate, phase-correct stereo audio. The module allows you to adjust the angle of the two mics to either 90 degrees, or for a wider stereo image, 120 degrees.

For situations that call for audio that allows for width control over your stereo image after it has been recorded, the XY module can be switched out for the MSH-6 mid-side stereo microphone module. Contrary to the appearance of the capsule, the mid-side module actually contains two elements positioned on top of one another: a unidirectional mic which faces forward (mid), and a bi-directional mic set perpendicular to it (side). In addition to providing you the ability to adjust the width of your stereo audio after it has been recorded, MS recording also provides true mono compatibility, a factor that comes into play in situations such as television production.

In addition, the H6 is equipped with four XLR/TRS combo inputs for connecting external mic/line sources such as microphones or mixers. All four inputs and each of the mic modules are equipped with their own preamps with dedicated gain knobs that are easily accessible whether you have the unit mounted to your camera, or strapped over your shoulder. Also, each of the four combo inputs has its own -20dB pad.

The recorder allows you to record up to six channels at once and stores them to SDXC memory cards up to 128GB in size. It also features a backup-record option that tracks a duplicate of the left and right channels with -12db input gain. This means that if you find that you have tracked your main audio too loud and that distortion has occurred in your audio, you will have a backup stereo mix with 12 db more headroom as a fail-safe. The unit also doubles as a 6-in/2-out USB audio interface and it can be used with your computer running the included Cubase LE or other DAW software.

      Zoom H6 review

This versatile flash card recorder has been available for a few months and sets a major standard for economy and performance in a handheld unit. In brief, it allows three different microphone capsules to be used with the recorder as well as room for six inputs via XLR/TRS connectors and line-in. It can also be used as an audio interface via USB.

The three microphone capsules include an XY stereo unit, as well as a Mid-Side one that allows mono recording as well as varying the stereo spread, and a short shotgun (SGH-6) that must be purchased separately. They allow many choices for recording without an external microphone. The Mid-Side microphone is slightly noisier than the XY unit.

Many different use situations can be imagined. My interest is in field recording so configuring the H6 to cope with wind and handling shocks required some innovation described here. The recorder with an attached microphone can be mounted in a Rode Blimp suspension body by using elastic hair ties around the front of the unit as well as through the strap attachment slots all connected to the thumbscrews on the suspension hoops. I find a crochet hook about size F/5 or 3.75 mm helps place and remove the elastics easily. This way the recorder can be carried with a shock mount. The blimp and wombat cover acts as a substantial wind screen. When used this way, the accessory H6 remote control (part of APH-6 package) allows control of the recorder from outside of the blimp setup. It comes with an extension cord as well allowing use from an extended distance. An earphone cord can also be routed out of the blimp for close monitoring of the recording. If you use the short shotgun mic (SGH-6), you would best use a boom pole to position the shotgun mic as you would for good recording technique.

Using either of the XY or MS microphone modules allows recording at -12 dB as a back-up in case the levels are set too high. This option is not available for the six other XLR or TRS inputs. There is also a limiter/compressor option available with three separate settings. No automatic level control is available but the compressor can act as an ALC. There is an auto-record capability for which you can set the activation start threshold so the recorder could be left unattended to capture evanescent sounds. You can also set a stop level.

There are some limitations in this versatile unit. If you want to use an existing microphone with a 3.5mm (1/8 inch) plug and require plug-in power this is available only when the XY microphone is mounted. This jack also functions as a line-in input. If you want phantom 12 or 48 volt power, this is only available on the four built-in XLR/TRS jacks. The accessory EXH-6 external input, attached where the XY or MS mics would go does not provide phantom power.

Combined with a video camera, or DSLR, there are great extended sound recording capabilities. For musicians requiring more than six inputs use of an external mixer will be needed. It takes some time to navigate the controls but they become intuitive with use.

With a wide range of usage and a reasonable price the Zoom H6 system can't be beat.

This is a well thought out device, it has a lot of usage, and iLife many reviews, it's good for general purposes.

For DSLR filmmakers, you may find it very hard to view the screen or adjust the dials when it is mounted on top of the camera, you CAN use additional supporters like a cage or a hotshoe mount, but it will add more stuff around the camera making it less portable.

I have been using both extensively and tested both the Zoom H6 and the Tascam DR-60D and between all my filmmaker friends that had used both devices, the Zoom renders more noise even though it is better than the H4N.

Don't get me wrong, it IS a good device but it has its application. I do love the fact I can use 4 XLRs but I hate the menu and option buttons they make it hard to change the settings.

Also, the backup recording options ONLY applies to the front modules L/R input not the 4 XLRs.

Comments about Zoom H6 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I use my H6 to record concerts, receiving a feed from XLR mics. It's great that such a small device can power 4 XLR inputs with instantly accessible level adjusters. I really like the color screen. I do wish it had a 4-way controller for navigating the menus. I find the little rocker panel on the side a bit slippery. So far, I've used the H6 on USB power, using an old Apple charger, with batteries in the recorder for backups. So far I've had good experiences with it.

Comments about Zoom H6 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

Using the H6 I realized that the compression works better in the interchangeable capsules than in the XLR inputs. I'm not saying that doesn't work well in the XLR inputs, just that I was gratefully surprised while I was recording in the X/Y capsule.

Comments about Zoom H6 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I dreaded the 104-page manual, fearing a weekend's study, but operating the Zoom H6 turns out to be straightforward and intuitive. You'll master the basic operations after 30 minutes 'playing around' with the recorder. In addition to the XY and MS mics that come with the recorder, I've bought the SGH6 shotgun mic and the EXH6 inpout module.Changing the mics and adjusting recording levels is a breeze. Versatile and quick transfer of recordings to computer (SD card and USB cable). Max. storage capacity on SD card more than enough for even highest quality recordings. Mics and recordings very good quality (to my ears). The shotgun maybe a bit limited in focus and reach. With the H6, the Zoom H-series has reached its size and weight limits as a 'portable' digital recorder.Zoom should make it possible to have user-named folders (now a fixed FOLDER01 to FOLDER10), and projects/recordings (now either ZOOM0001 to ZOOM9999, or date-time: YYMMDD-HHMMSS). Zoom should make its recorders rain/splashwater-proof, esp. the connectors when nothing is connected and dials, to allow out-door use.The case that comes with the recorder is OK, but a bit flimsy. I'm much more happy with the SKB iSeries Waterproof Case for Zoom H6 Recorder and Mic Modules. Very robust and also protects against tropical humidity (provided some silica gel is put in it).

Seems to function well. Sound recording excellent. Simple usability enhancements would make it a 5 star product...a small raised red led at the back to show that it's recording - hard to see the panel when mounted on a camera or rig; larger on/off switch.Very well made; good manual of instructions. They should also make a small table-top stand!

So far, I've used this for camera-mounted interview audio (shotgun), studio recorded voice-over work (mid-side mic), and round table discussion capture (xy mic). It excelled in each area and the results have more than exceeded my expectations.

The product itself works like a charm, only if you put another battery that is not supplied in the pack. I trusted the battery and it wouldnt even turn on. Dont make the mistake of not taking 4 extra AA batteries!

Just purchased this baby a few weeks ago. Stress tested it at a live concert (XY and mid-side adapters) with uber loud music. It did better than anticipated, some EQ will help a lot in post. Sounds great under ideal conditions as well.

I posted a glowing review of this recorder earlier but I would like to add an update. The built-in microphones are insanely sensitive to wind noise. You CANNOT use this thing outside without a very good wind screen on the built-in mics. I mean the slightest movement of air is death to the sound quality of the built-in microphone. The AGC will pump and the rumble makes the audio worthless.

Also, it absolutely cannot be hand-held while recording with the built-in mic. The handling noise transfers right to the mic. You need to have it on a tripod.

This little guy is AMAZING! You can use it as an audio interface for your mac/pc, you can rum phantom power to condensers. The only slight problem is that it does not come with a power plug for the wall, but you can pick one up at a local store for under $ or $. It also does not include the microphone holder to allow you to put it on a microphone stand, but B&H has those as well. This was, for me, an upgrade from the Zoom H4N and it was worth every penny. I saw one reviewer lament the screen functionality, but I cannot see any problems with the menu/interface. It is intuitive and easy to use. You'll love this thing! It also doesn't seem to be quite as much of a power hog as the H4n (although this one has 4 AA batteries whereas the H4n has 2).

I work in video, mostly consisting of interviews, short film and documentary. The first audio device I bought apart from using shotgun or lavs into the camera was the Zoom H4n. It was a game changer for me, instantly making my work much more professional from an audio standpoint. Now I've graduated to the H6. This is the Cadillac of Zooms as far as I know, and I love the ease of use, options and the sturdiness of the structure. It's phenomenal. You'll never regret making the Zoom H6 a part of your video arsenal.
