The black LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera from Panasonic is a sleek, compact camera with a 12.1 High Sensitivity MOS 1/1.7" sensor and the LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 7.1x optical zoom lens. The sensor is large by compact camera standards and provides clear, high resolution images at both high and low ISO settings and rich tonal gradations with a wide dynamic range. Its Venus Engine image processor enables fast performance including 10 fps of continuous shooting at full resolution and fast Sonic Speed autofocus. The LF1 supports HD 1080i video capture in the AVCHD format with stereo audio recording and 30i capture in the MP4 format for simplified playback. A dedicated button immediately starts video recording even from stills mode.

The lens on the LF1 provides the 35mm focal equivalent of a 28-200mm lens which provides broad coverage from true wide-angle to telephoto. Its maximum aperture is f/2.0 which enables fast shutter speeds, effective low-light imaging and shallow depth of field focus. In addition, POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) suppresses the vibration from hand-shake for clear shots in low light and at long focal lengths.

Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with Near Field Communication (NFC) allows for instant transfer of your images to a computer, smart phone or tablet. NFC lets you connect your smart phone to your camera by simply bringing them together. This significantly simplifies the process of image transfer. And with the free Panasonic Image App you are able to use your device as a remote control and monitor, upload directly to social media sites, playback wirelessly on compliant TV's and sync and store your images in the cloud.

For image composition and playback the LF1 features a 3.0" 920k-dot Intelligent LCD monitor with automatic brightness adjustment and also offers a built-in 0.2" Electronic Viewfinder with 200k-dot resolution and 100% field of view. Use either as your needs demand, the LCD for odd angles and large screen viewing or the EVF for stable control and to reduce the effects of glare.

A control ring built around the lens enables direct, intuitive adjustment of numerous settings including zoom and manual exposure control. Also, the LF1 provides a Level Gauge for proper image alignment and a composition guide to assist in the creation of pleasing images. Intelligent Auto allows the camera to adjust itself according to the scenes it reads utilizing each of the camera's assistive modes and Creative Control lets you add creative filter effects in standard still mode and in panorama mode.

12.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor
The DMC-LF1 integrates 1/1.7", 12.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor which is larger in size than standard digital compact cameras. Thanks to the extensive light receiving area, low light capture is superior with excellent S / N ratio and wide dynamic range. The result is clear, high resolution images not only in high ISO sensitivity recording but also in low ISO setting reproducing rich tonal gradation with a wide dynamic range.
LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 7.1x Optical Zoom Lens
The DMC-LF1 is equipped with newly developed 28mm wide angle LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 7.1x optical zoom lens with the 35mm equivalent of 28-200mm. This lens features a maximum aperture of f/2.0 which allows using higher shutter speeds to capture sharp, blur-free images in lower lighting situations as well as providing shallow depth of field focus.
3.0" 920k-dot LCD
The 3.0", 920,000-dot Intelligent LCD with high resolution and a wide viewing angle features automatic brightness adjustment in 7 steps as the surrounding brightness level changes, ensuring easy visibility at all times. The big screen with Anti-Reflective coating displays fine details, making it easy to check focus before shooting.
Built-in 0.2" Electronic Viewfinder
The DMC-LF1 comes with 0.2" EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) with 200k-dot resolution and a 100% field of view. It assures stable framing and high visibility of live view images even under strong sunlight.
1080i HD Video Recording in AVCHD and MP4
The DMC-LF1 records HD 1080i video at 60 fps with full-time AF and high quality stereo sound in the AVCHD format which excels in both compression efficiency and compatibility with AV equipment for playback. With a dedicated video record button on the back, users can instantly start recording videos while shooting photos without having to make any extra setting adjustments. Videos can also be recorded in HD 720p and in MP4 format for playback on a PC or other portable electronic devices without having to convert the files. Zoom function is supported during video recording.
Built-in Stereo Microphone
Video recording also comes with the high-quality stereo sound of Dolby Digital. The stereo microphone comes with a zoom noise reduction system, and the Auto Wind Cut function blocks out most of the noise from background wind.
Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC
With NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, you can connect the camera with a smartphone or tablet by just bringing them together. The Wi-Fi setup is extremely easy and finishes within a few seconds, making it possible to pair the camera directly to the device without connection procedure of information input for authorization. With Wi-Fi connectivity you can instantly transfer images to your smartphone the free Panasonic Image App lets you perform multiple wireless tasks, including remote shooting and viewing from your smartphone, direct sharing to social media sites, geotagging, real time broadcasting and Cloud Sync storage of images across compliant devices.
POWER O.I.S. with Active Mode
The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) suppresses the low-frequency vibration created by hand-shake, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed. The O.I.S. also works for powerful zoom shots, which are especially susceptible to hand-shake. Plus, the Active Mode is effective for video recording.
Wide ISO Range and Extended ISO
The combination of the MOS Sensor and the Venus Engine achieves ISO 6400 (Auto) and maximum of ISO 12800 in Extended Mode. Images shot in low-lit situations are clear with sharp resolution and minimal noise.
Control Ring
Manual control is easy to try thanks to the Control Ring, which enables direct, intuitive control over frequently-used settings - zooming, aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and the filters of Creative Control and Creative Panorama.
Built-in Flash
The built-in flash provides numerous modes including Auto, Auto / Red-eye Reduction, Forced On, Slow Sync. / Red-eye Reduction, Forced Off and Digital Red-eye Correction.
Composition Guide
To assist learning photography, Composition Guide is available in the DMC-LF1. It is easy to shoot a photo in good composition by just choosing the most suitable pattern of composition from Rule of Thirds Offset, Diagonal Lines, Tunnel, Radiation 1, Radiation 2 and S-shape; and framing the subjects along the guided lines.

    L U M I X L F 1.

    Where I come from
My 'real ' camera is a micro four thirds (MFT) systems camera. It does everything well I wish for in a camera except it does not fit my pocket. That's why sometimes I prefer a second camera that does. A Canon S 95 filled that place admirably until my canoe capsized submerging it in the floods of a local lake. I wanted a replacement similar to the S 95 but, if possible, with a built in electronic viewfinder (EVF), which was something I got to like very much in my MFT camera. I am far sighted and the diopter adjustment of the EVF will make glasses unnecessary. The LF 1 is the one point and shoot camera to offer this.
It does not blow my MFT out of the water and the viewfinder image reminds me
of pre high definition TV. But I can reliably frame the image and see the
numerical information. When there is no hurry and the sun doesn't blank out the image, I will gladly get my glasses out and use the screen. After using it for a couple of weeks I find the LF 1 to be a likeable companion. It produces well defined photos in point and shoot manner that I am not embarrassed to show side by side with the ones taken with the MFT and even for projects that call for a more deliberate approach the LF 1 does well. The dial for exposure mode settings is of the familiar P/A/S/M layout so I started taking pictures right away without having to go too deeply into the manual.

Optics and low light level photographs
I had been used to zoom lenses that cover the focal length range from 28 to 90mm and I was concerned that to stretch this out to 200 mm might take its toll on the general image quality. Not so. I tested the lens at several focal lengths and apertures with an USAF test target and always counted at least 1000 lp/image height. Vignetting and geometric distortion are barely detectable. The jpg compression appears not to reduce the resolution when compared to RAW image files. f:2/28 and ISO 1600 suffice for urban night scenes, snapshots in restaurants and the like and as a last resort in desperate conditions, one can still increase the speed up to ISO 12800. At longer focal lengths the aperture is gradually reduced by maximally 3 f-stops at F 200 mm.

Image stabilization and use of a tripod
When using of a tripod it is typically recommended to disable the image stabilizer. The LF1 manual does not mention this and I took some pictures with and without image stabilization. There was no difference I could detect.

    Scene mode settings
There are 16 scene mode settings. I have not tried many of them except high dynamic range (HDR) where the camera takes three shots of different exposure times in rapid succession and then consolidates them into a single frame. Preliminary experiments look promising.

I have had this camera now for about a month and I like it very much.
Yes, I would like more battery capacity. No, I would not like the camera to be bulkier in exchange.

The camera comes with printed brief instructions and a 256 page manual on CD.
It is richly illustrated but some things got lost in translation and the lack of an index is regrettable. The LF1 does not take more gladly to a full bath than my S95 and I am selling my canoe.

At first glance, this is a compelling product. It is super small, similar to the category leading Canon S120, but boasts a lens that travels to 200mm that is unmatched in its class. The positives pretty much end there. Although it produces okay low-light photos, I couldn't help but notice the images were coming out with relatively poor image quality. This lens is SO soft that it appears to be more of a children's camera than an enthusiast camera. The softness is present throughout the lens range, but becomes far more apparent at the wide end. It is fairly sharp in the middle, but the bur around the edges of the photo is so bad it renders the images unusable. I truly believe this camera suffers from either a design or manufacturing defect. I have returned this camera and will be giving the Nikon P340 (which is purported to have a super sharp lens) for a spin.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

I had been looking for a few years for something to replace my Canon SD1000 but nothing looked right (too large for not enough performance) until I spotted this as one of the few in ths category with a viewfinder. It would be nice if Panasonic made a case, especially if it didn't increase the bulk.

Got this as a gift for my wife and she loves it. I was able to try the camera out and it does very well in low light and no flash. Fill flash is not an overkill balances very well. Fast 2.0 Leica lens and great color. Have not notices any issue with noise in low light high ISO. Remember this is not a pro camera that cost thousands of dollars but does very well and I would not have a problem printing 11x14 images made with this camera.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

To start, let me begin by stating that my normal 'do-all' cameras are typically along the lines of a pro-sumer DSLR with a set of primes and a couple of good-quality zooms. I have also owned a Canon S3is for about seven years now. Whenever I couldn't take the DSLR along, I reached for the S3is. It's important to note that I used the 100k dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) on the S3is as much as the optical viewfinder on my DSLR and with very good results. For a lot of travel situations, I found that the little S3is couldn't be beat. But, after nearly 8 years, it's gotten a bit dated in terms of its features, resolution and low light performance. All in all, when I bought the Lumix LF1, I was looking for a camera that could do what the S3is does very well, but with higher resolution, better low light performance, and the possibility of shooting RAW files all without sacrificing too much space or convenience - and certainly not leaving out the viewfinder!

After a lot of reading, I had a tough time choosing between the LF1 and the new TZ60/ZS40. Both cameras are well-specified and have a 200k dot EVF. I was really tempted by the reach of the TZ60's lens, but the sensor size and pixel pitch was a bit too much of a negative trade off. That was really driven home when I compared some of the images from both cameras; without a doubt, the images from the LF1 were sharper and more defined at equivalent focal lengths. I bought the LF1 and immediately took it on vacation.

So, how much have I missed the 425 mm equivalent lens of my S3is when using the 222 mm equivalent maximum lens on the LF1? Not much, actually. The resolution is so much greater (12 MP for the LF1 vs 6 MP for the old S3is) that simply cropping images from the LF1 really does give an equivalent image about 90% of the time. With the exception of photographing wildlife, the LF1's 28-200 (closer to 30-222) mm equivalent is plenty of range.

A lot of reviews have picked on the AF performance of the LF1 and also its color rendition. I would say that the AF focuses very fast in all but the worst combinations of light and greatest focal length. As far as the quality of the standard output of the JPEGs is concerned, the colors are extremely accurate and the corner-to-corner sharpness isn't bad even at the wide end of the zoom. I vastly prefer the natural fidelity of the LF1 to the 'hot' images produced by the default settings of most of the compacts I've tested or owned.

On the other hand, a lot of reviewers have complained about the position of the power button. I will have to agree that it is perhaps the worst placement of a power button on any camera I have ever used. I accidentally turned the LF1 on so many times on my recent trip that I had to re-learn how to hold the camera to keep from doing it. It's especially easy to turn on while removing it from the Ruggard neoprene case I bought with it.

Overall, though, after three weeks of use I think the LF1 is a great little camera. I can say that its image quality and low-light performance are better than average for a camera so small, light and inexpensive. It's also got a viewfinder, and even though it isn't the best available, is incredibly handy in bright sunlight or when using the lens at full telephoto.

I definitely recommend this camera to anyone who typically uses a DSLR or bridge camera and needs something smaller. I doubt you'll be dissappointed.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

I am very pleased with the camera. It takes very clear pictures, which is what I was looking for. The stabilization works well. It has a lot of options to manually adjust the settings. I still need to learn more about these features but it is going to require reading the guide that came on an accompanying CD. The only thing that I have had problems with is the WI-FI connection. I cannot get the program on my phone to recognize the camera. I have tried the other options for connecting WI-FI with no success. This was my first purchase through B&H and it was terrific. I will definitely recommend them to others. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase. I would have given it five stars except for the WI-FI problems I am having.

Bought this camera because of its having an eyepiece viewfinder. My wife takes daytime landscape shots where as often as not the LCD screen is washed out by sunlight. The viewfinder makes accurately seeing what you are taking possible. So far she loves it, we both do, as I use it as well. It has many more customizable options than we are likely to use, but that's fine. The lens is Leica, none finer. So far no complaints. GREAT COMPACT CAMERA

Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

I mostly take family travel pics, bought this for a Hawaii wedding trip because it fit in my pants pocket!I loved having a viewfinder and zoom lens on a pocketable camera. Pic quality is great in good light.I found the viewfinder very usable and used it on 95% of my shots in Hawii. (I don't wear glasses.) However the v.f. diopter dial on mine was very notchy & hard to set. Twice the size & resolution would make the viewfinder & diopter setting better. The LCD display had excellent resolution, I used it to review pics and for navigating menus. (And for surreptious shots.)Low light pics had sensor noise, needed to use flash after dark. Tripod would have helped for outside night shots.B & H was very helpful.Overall I am very happy with this camera. Haven't tried the video yet.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

This is the best pocket camera I have had and since it shoots RAW I am using the DSLRs less. The viewfinder has made for good photos when the lighting was bad for the LCD screen. The battery/SD card cover is solid with good latch, while another P & S latch went bad and camera went to recycle. I seemed to get only a bit over 100 photos before the last bar of the battery indicator went away which is far less than advertised. I shot RAW until the battery died and got about 200. The large sensor has captured good photos at high ISO.

I've enjoyed having this compact camera along with me. It takes great photos and it's very sturdy. My only complaint is that the shutter button is right next to the on/off button. I'm still getting used to that and have, unfortunately, missed photo opportunities. Can't quite understand why Panasonic would think that's a smart place to put the on/off button.

It's small enough to carry easily. Takes very sharp crisp photos with good color. One problem is that the ON button can easily be pressed by mistake when taking it out of one's pocket, thus extending the lens - I'm afraid it will get hurt. Feels well-made.

I carry a camera everywhere I go. Used to be big Nikons. Switched to a V2 with 10/100 for trip to Alaska. Saw a guy using the LF1 and was surprized by the viewfinder. Can't live w/out veiwfinder. I'm still learning about it, but the pictures (snapshots mainly) are really good. It's a little troublesome to suppress the flash. Very handy. How much did Panasonic pay for the Leica name?

I am happy with my new Panasonic Lumix. I got it to take on a European vacation when I didn't want to tote my Canon EOS 50D and large tripod. My Canon S 100 was being repaired and I wanted to make sure I had a top point and shoot, with manual controls, and an excellent sensor. Had fun trying out the creative settings, though I doubt I will be using them: Toy, HDR,etc.etc. And it has a viewfinder!

The LF1K is a small camera that fits in a shirt pocket very well. In the little time that I have used it, the pictures and movies look very good. I did not use it in low light indoors or at night at this time. Movies in IA mode can zoom to 14x, but, if you use P mode you can zoom until the movies get too grainy(i.e. lots of zoom). Great little camera.
The view finder id great in bright sun light, much better then no viewfinder.
The one thing that I would like to see with it is an external battery charger. You will need extra battery(s) for it, since battery life is not that long. (small camera=small battery) which is expected.

I bought it and things seemed fairly decent for the price (barely any shutter lag, decent write speed for RAW were my big concerns). I would have kept it except for the fact the images were all soft when you opened it up in Photoshop, and most of them where just blurry. The autofocus was having lots of issues. Overall, there was also more noise than expected.

It's easy to use, small enough to fit in my pocket, and takes excellent images.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

This camera has a great sensor, low ISO, and just the right amount of settings. I have had many point and shoots but none performs like this. It takes me back to the days of my 35mm SLR; like photography rather than just taking pictures.
