The black LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera from Panasonic is a sleek, compact camera with a 12.1 High Sensitivity MOS 1/1.7" sensor and the LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 7.1x optical zoom lens. The sensor is large by compact camera standards and provides clear, high resolution images at both high and low ISO settings and rich tonal gradations with a wide dynamic range. Its Venus Engine image processor enables fast performance including 10 fps of continuous shooting at full resolution and fast Sonic Speed autofocus. The LF1 supports HD 1080i video capture in the AVCHD format with stereo audio recording and 30i capture in the MP4 format for simplified playback. A dedicated button immediately starts video recording even from stills mode.

The lens on the LF1 provides the 35mm focal equivalent of a 28-200mm lens which provides broad coverage from true wide-angle to telephoto. Its maximum aperture is f/2.0 which enables fast shutter speeds, effective low-light imaging and shallow depth of field focus. In addition, POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) suppresses the vibration from hand-shake for clear shots in low light and at long focal lengths.

 Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with Near Field Communication (NFC) allows for instant transfer of your images to a computer, smart phone or tablet. NFC lets you connect your smart phone to your camera by simply bringing them together. This significantly simplifies the process of image transfer. And with the free Panasonic Image App you are able to use your device as a remote control and monitor, upload directly to social media sites, playback wirelessly on compliant TV's and sync and store your images in the cloud.

For image composition and playback the LF1 features a 3.0" 920k-dot Intelligent LCD monitor with automatic brightness adjustment and also offers a built-in 0.2" Electronic Viewfinder with 200k-dot resolution and 100% field of view. Use either as your needs demand, the LCD for odd angles and large screen viewing or the EVF for stable control and to reduce the effects of glare.

A control ring built around the lens enables direct, intuitive adjustment of numerous settings including zoom and manual exposure control. Also, the LF1 provides a Level Gauge for proper image alignment and a composition guide to assist in the creation of pleasing images. Intelligent Auto allows the camera to adjust itself according to the scenes it reads utilizing each of the camera's assistive modes and Creative Control lets you add creative filter effects in standard still mode and in panorama mode.

12.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor
The DMC-LF1 integrates 1/1.7", 12.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor which is larger in size than standard digital compact cameras. Thanks to the extensive light receiving area, low light capture is superior with excellent S / N ratio and wide dynamic range. The result is clear, high resolution images not only in high ISO sensitivity recording but also in low ISO setting reproducing rich tonal gradation with a wide dynamic range.
LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 7.1x Optical Zoom Lens
The DMC-LF1 is equipped with newly developed 28mm wide angle LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 7.1x optical zoom lens with the 35mm equivalent of 28-200mm. This lens features a maximum aperture of f/2.0 which allows using higher shutter speeds to capture sharp, blur-free images in lower lighting situations as well as providing shallow depth of field focus.
3.0" 920k-dot LCD
The 3.0", 920,000-dot Intelligent LCD with high resolution and a wide viewing angle features automatic brightness adjustment in 7 steps as the surrounding brightness level changes, ensuring easy visibility at all times. The big screen with Anti-Reflective coating displays fine details, making it easy to check focus before shooting.
Built-in 0.2" Electronic Viewfinder
The DMC-LF1 comes with 0.2" EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) with 200k-dot resolution and a 100% field of view. It assures stable framing and high visibility of live view images even under strong sunlight.
1080i HD Video Recording in AVCHD and MP4
The DMC-LF1 records HD 1080i video at 60 fps with full-time AF and high quality stereo sound in the AVCHD format which excels in both compression efficiency and compatibility with AV equipment for playback. With a dedicated video record button on the back, users can instantly start recording videos while shooting photos without having to make any extra setting adjustments. Videos can also be recorded in HD 720p and in MP4 format for playback on a PC or other portable electronic devices without having to convert the files. Zoom function is supported during video recording.
Built-in Stereo Microphone
Video recording also comes with the high-quality stereo sound of Dolby Digital. The stereo microphone comes with a zoom noise reduction system, and the Auto Wind Cut function blocks out most of the noise from background wind.
Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC
With NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, you can connect the camera with a smartphone or tablet by just bringing them together. The Wi-Fi setup is extremely easy and finishes within a few seconds, making it possible to pair the camera directly to the device without connection procedure of information input for authorization. With Wi-Fi connectivity you can instantly transfer images to your smartphone the free Panasonic Image App lets you perform multiple wireless tasks, including remote shooting and viewing from your smartphone, direct sharing to social media sites, geotagging, real time broadcasting and Cloud Sync storage of images across compliant devices.
POWER O.I.S. with Active Mode
The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) suppresses the low-frequency vibration created by hand-shake, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed. The O.I.S. also works for powerful zoom shots, which are especially susceptible to hand-shake. Plus, the Active Mode is effective for video recording.
Wide ISO Range and Extended ISO
The combination of the MOS Sensor and the Venus Engine achieves ISO 6400 (Auto) and maximum of ISO 12800 in Extended Mode. Images shot in low-lit situations are clear with sharp resolution and minimal noise.
Control Ring
Manual control is easy to try thanks to the Control Ring, which enables direct, intuitive control over frequently-used settings - zooming, aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and the filters of Creative Control and Creative Panorama.
Built-in Flash
The built-in flash provides numerous modes including Auto, Auto / Red-eye Reduction, Forced On, Slow Sync. / Red-eye Reduction, Forced Off and Digital Red-eye Correction.
Composition Guide
To assist learning photography, Composition Guide is available in the DMC-LF1. It is easy to shoot a photo in good composition by just choosing the most suitable pattern of composition from Rule of Thirds Offset, Diagonal Lines, Tunnel, Radiation 1, Radiation 2 and S-shape; and framing the subjects along the guided lines.
Intelligent Auto Mode and iA Plus Mode
iA (Intelligent Auto) mode allows taking beautiful pictures with a variety of assist functions including AF Tracking, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Recognition and Intelligent ISO Control. The iA Plus mode lets you adjust defocusing area in the background, exposure compensation and white balance for more flexible control.
Creative Control and Creative Panorama
The Creative Control mode allows you to enhance images prior to shooting and includes 15 filter options. With the new Creative Panorama function, it is possible to shoot a horizontal or vertical panoramic image and adjust it by using 12 filter effects of Creative Control. The Creative Control Filters in Still mode are Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Star Filter, and One Point Color.
Creative Retouch
Creative Retouch makes it possible add the filters of Creative Control after the image has been shot.

    L U M I X L F 1.

    Where I come from
    My 'real ' camera is a micro four thirds (MFT) systems camera. It does everything well I wish for in a camera except it does not fit my pocket. That's why sometimes I prefer a second camera that does. A Canon S 95 filled that place admirably until my canoe capsized submerging it in the floods of a local lake. I wanted a replacement similar to the S 95 but, if possible, with a built in electronic viewfinder (EVF), which was something I got to like very much in my MFT camera. I am far sighted and the diopter adjustment of the EVF will make glasses unnecessary. The LF 1 is the one point and shoot camera to offer this.
    It does not blow my MFT out of the water and the viewfinder image reminds me
    of pre high definition TV. But I can reliably frame the image and see the
    numerical information. When there is no hurry and the sun doesn't blank out the image, I will gladly get my glasses out and use the screen. After using it for a couple of weeks I find the LF 1 to be a likeable companion. It produces well defined photos in point and shoot manner that I am not embarrassed to show side by side with the ones taken with the MFT and even for projects that call for a more deliberate approach the LF 1 does well. The dial for exposure mode settings is of the familiar P/A/S/M layout so I started taking pictures right away without having to go too deeply into the manual.

    Optics and low light level photographs
    I had been used to zoom lenses that cover the focal length range from 28 to 90mm and I was concerned that to stretch this out to 200 mm might take its toll on the general image quality. Not so. I tested the lens at several focal lengths and apertures with an USAF test target and always counted at least 1000 lp/image height. Vignetting and geometric distortion are barely detectable. The jpg compression appears not to reduce the resolution when compared to RAW image files. f:2/28 and ISO 1600 suffice for urban night scenes, snapshots in restaurants and the like and as a last resort in desperate conditions, one can still increase the speed up to ISO 12800. At longer focal lengths the aperture is gradually reduced by maximally 3 f-stops at F 200 mm.

    Image stabilization and use of a tripod
    When using of a tripod it is typically recommended to disable the image stabilizer. The LF1 manual does not mention this and I took some pictures with and without image stabilization. There was no difference I could detect.

    Scene mode settings
    There are 16 scene mode settings. I have not tried many of them except high dynamic range (HDR) where the camera takes three shots of different exposure times in rapid succession and then consolidates them into a single frame. Preliminary experiments look promising.

    I have had this camera now for about a month and I like it very much.
    Yes, I would like more battery capacity. No, I would not like the camera to be bulkier in exchange.

    The camera comes with printed brief instructions and a 256 page manual on CD.
    It is richly illustrated but some things got lost in translation and the lack of an index is regrettable. The LF1 does not take more gladly to a full bath than my S95 and I am selling my canoe.

    I bought it and things seemed fairly decent for the price (barely any shutter lag, decent write speed for RAW were my big concerns). I would have kept it except for the fact the images were all soft when you opened it up in Photoshop, and most of them where just blurry. The autofocus was having lots of issues. Overall, there was also more noise than expected.

        Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

        We were on the hunt for a high-end compact with a fast lens and an above average sized sensor and WITH A VIEWFINDER. This is one of the very few that fits the bill, and the price is unbeatable. The LF1 takes great shots, does quite well in low light, has very flattering and sharp optics and is overall just a great pocket camera. I'm very impressed and very happy with the purchase. For a camera in this category and price range, I think it's the only choice.

        Used it to take casual photo. The camera is small enough to put it in pocket but powerful enough to take good picture. Having a view finder is good for taking picture in sunny situation. Very happy with the discount I got from B&H. Proud to be the owner of this little camera.

        This is my hiking camera. It fits in a case that clips to my belt. It is easy to use, but lets me do many manual adjustments. I can do wide-angle landscapes, but also really good close-ups of flowers or butterflies. In addition it takes very good movies of waterfalls or wildlife.

          Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

          I have had both the Lumix LX-5 and LX-7 cameras, and I like the LF-1
          better overall. It is substantially smaller and lighter, yet has most of the feature set of the LX-5, and close enough to the LX-7 specs to meet my
          needs for everyday photography. Also it has a decent viewfinder, which both of the LX's do not. The big trade-off compared to LX-7 would be the 2.0 lens vs. the 1.4, which is a no brainer it would seem, yet the low light capability of the 2.0 is still very good, as is the quality of Bokeh, in my estimation. I do a fair amount of macro photography, and when hand-held I prefer the LF-1 as it is smaller & lighter. Plus giving virtually the same results as far as focusing, although in that area it gets pretty subjective. The LF-1 also excels in with its extended zoom lens, which is far greater than either the LX-5 or 7.
          And I also prefer the overall look and sharpness of the photos compared to the other two models. And when compared the similar size Canon S110 type camera, it looks to do better in most areas to me.
          The only real minus point with this camera is the on/off button, which is
          fairly easy to activate due to its proximity to the shutter release button.
          Once I got used to handling this camera, that has not been a significant deal, compared to the general ease of use, and capabilities of this model.

            The camera - LF1 - is well built has the right amount of features yet keeps in mind the most important fact that it's main purpose is to help capture a very good photo. It has enough capabilities for simple shots or to manipulate it manually for more difficult levels.

              Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

              Features I like: Leica lens, EVF viewfinder, RAW capture, and will easily fit in a pocket. I also have the FZ-150 and like the way Panasonic's sensor handles noise. I call it a combination of smooth sharpness or sharp smoothness. The output reminds me of film quality with a faint grain depending on the ISO choice.

              The EVF sensor is tiny, but again it will do the job - all information is displayed - or some depending on user set-up. A nice feature is the movable multiple use ring lens collar which can even act as a zoom control.

              If you own Panasonic cameras, very little learning is required to get you started.

                  I love this camera! It can easily be used as a point and shoot camera and will take great pictures. It also offers a lot of features that allow the user to make adjustments and enhancements. It is compact and light weight. My only complaint is that it took me a little while to get used to the location of the on/off switch. It is where I naturally hold my finger to take a picture and was a bit frustrated at first when I shut the camera off instead of taking a picture.

                  I wrote another review and promised some pictures, so here's a sample.

                  While the Lumix has more noise, do keep in mind that it's still an excellent camera and the images are extremely sharp. According to a colleague, the lower noise level in the Canon is likely to be due to in-camera, built-in, noise-reduction.

                  Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

                  As a freelance photographer, I use both DSLR and Mirrorless systems as well as 35mm to 4x5 film cameras for my work. Funny is that I hate carrying camera bags around if it isn't necessary, not even the small one for the light weight mirrorless camera. I was looking for a tiny point & shoot camera to be in my pocket everyday but pretty much all of them in the market didn't shoot in RAW format; even those did were quite expensive. I had in my mind that I wanted a point & shoot for taking casual candid and street photos which:
                  1) has RAW format;
                  2) has big aperture;
                  3) has good zoom range for scenery and portrait;
                  4) has manual function;
                  5) has a viewfinder for shooting under the sun;
                  6) has an attractive price tag.

                  So, I had done quite an extensive research online before I finally decided to purchase this LF1. I was taking a chance since this is my first Lumix camera and I had never tried it before, got no idea what the quality of the machine and picture would like; but boy, what a great camera it is! I have got it for almost a week now and I'm still testing it indoor, outdoor, on M mode, on P mode, Scene mode, Creative Control mode, and all the pictures have come out breathtakingly gorgeous. I haven't tested the video function of it yet but besides the audio could be a bit problematic due to the small microphone, I'm sure the video picture quality is superb.
                  The photos below are straight from the camera, from RAW to JPEG without any correction.

                    If you are looking for a pocketable camera with a lot of options that DSLR offers for less than [$], this is the one. Fast focus, good closeup, shooting mode, manual controls, F2.0, EVF. I usually carry my big full frame dslr with prime lenses but once in a while, I like to be hand free but not miss any photos opportunity and this is the solution. I would have bought the Sony rx100 II For [$]if the LF1 is not on sale. I am very happy with this purchase.I have been buying my cameras, lenses and photographic accessories from B&H since 2007 and have been fully satisfied.

Good quality and I love the panorama feature plus it is small enough to carry in my coat pocket. And the sale price was great too.

                            Comments about LUMIX DMC-LF1 Digital Camera (Black):

                            Hi,

                            Considering that the S110 dates back to Sept. 2012, and this camera has a viewfinder, which the former doesn't (and the price right now is excellent), I figured this should be a good idea as an upgrade.

                            Both, the DMC-LF1 and the S110 are practically the same size and weight.

                            In essence, the Lumix is a good camera, but I expected the image quality to beat my S110, since the sensor is the same size but about 2 years newer. In this regard, image quality is fairly similar for anything under iso 800 with no in-camera enhancements (I'm basing this exclusively on RAW images), but above that, grain becomes more noticeable than in my S110's images. I'm not going to mention image quality in the pros/cons section because that wouldn't be fair. The image quality is good, don't get me wrong, but not as good as the S110 or as good as I expected. I took the exact same pictures using the same settings on both cameras in order to compare the quality. While not a lab test, it was pretty structured and controlled. (If I can update this review, I'll post a link to my blog or some comparison images in about a month.)

                            The Electronic View Finder, while a very practical thing to have has very low image quality. I'm mentioning this so you know what to expect. It's good for composing and I would've ended up using it exclusively if I kept this camera, but color rendition and resolution are nothing to write home about.

                            At the time of this writing, the S110 is still available here in B & H and at an excellent price. If that weren't the case, I would, maybe, recommend the Lumix at the sale price, but you would be doing yourself a favor taking a look at the S110 (if anything, you'd save some money).

                            The only thing about this camera that's actually irritating is the power button. Very close to the shoot button and very soft to press in spite of being recessed - I accidentally turned off the camera a few times. This is something you could get used to, but it's quite possible that if you hand the camera to someone else to take a picture, s/he will turn it off instead.

                            Timer-release is for 10 seconds only (I sometimes use the 2s release on the S110 when I place the camera on top of something to take a long exposure.

                            It doesn't come with a separate battery charger. You must connect the camera to the power adapter (which, thankfully, is very compact) or use a computer (iPhone or any USB charger would work too).
