The Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF produces a slightly telephoto angle-of-view on full-frame sensors. It features a very fast maximum aperture of T1.5 and an 8 blade iris, for shallow depth of field with attractive bokeh. The focus and aperture control rings are outfitted with industry standard gearing, which provides an interface for working with a traditional follow focus. The aperture control ring has also been "declicked," which facilitates smooth iris pulls.

The 85mm has a minimum focus distance of 3.6'. Internal focusing minimizes the effects of lens breathing, which insures a more consistent angle-of-view when adjusting focus. The lens is composed of 9 elements in 7 groups, including one aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations. In addition, multi-coated elements help improve light transmission.

Comments about Bower 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

Nice basic cine lens which very nicely attaches to my follow focus. Declicked aperture. Is it a $[$]zeiss lens quality, of course not, but it's pretty darn good and 5% the cost. It gets a tad soft around the edges wide open, but yeah thats t1.5 for you. If you are looking for a medium tele prime this is an excellent bargain.

Comments about Bower 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

It's a great sharp and solidly built lens for video application. I say it's for video because it's got manual focus and also smooth (not stepped) aperture that's marked in cine T-stops instead of F-stops. You can still take photos with this lens obviously BUT it works better in video applications with a follow focus system.

      Significant improvement

      By Gpmedia

Comments about Bower 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

I do local event videography. My camera is the Canon 7D and this lens is a significant improvement over the stock 28-135 lens that came with my camera. Evening video is nearly exactly the same brightness reality. I love it. Next on my list the 24mm.....that 1.7 crop factor plays a big factor with prime lenses.

Comments about Bower 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

I use this lens for video on a Canon 60D for my personal small projects as most of my work consist of bigger shoots mainly on RED Epic/Scarlet which I rent cine lenses for.

It's great to have a fully manual lens with de-clicked aperture for video use. The lens is quite sharp, not as a Canon 85mm 1.2L or a Ziess ZF but you do get really nice video features.

For the price it's on a league of it's own. but don't expect a real cine lens quality or really long focus rotation. Also, the marks on the lens are not as accurate as for example my Ziess 50mm, so if you hit the 6feet mark and you're 6feet from a subject it doesn't mean you'll be in focus...

Another important note, on a personal level is that for me the lens doesn't have a unique look, like the Ziess, Canon L or Cine lenses like Cooke. It lacks the "character" expensive lenses have, but that's totally understandable considering the price. I'm just saying as I know some people will prefer to save up and wait till they can just buy the "one" lens that will last them a lifetime.

All in all this lens for the price is a no brainer, even as a back up lens or a part of a second set of video Primes to someone that have a more expensive set.

      Inexpensive Cinema Lens

      By Pedanes

      from Boston

Comments about Bower 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

After using DLSR and prime lenses for video in the past 4-5 years, I wanted to learn and take advantage of capabilities of cinema camera and lenses and recently acquired a Canon C100 camera. Professional quality cinema lenses (Canon, Zeiss) are very expensive (for me), so I found this lens as an alternative. This lens is probably the cheapest cinema lens you could find for C100 camera, it is 10-15 times less expensive than Canon/Zeiss counterparts. Obviously, I don't claim that the quality of the glass will match those expensive ones, but as an introduction to fully manually operated cinema lenses this is a good choice for a hobbyist like myself. I used the lens for a few weeks so far and I am very happy with my purchase. The focusing and declicked aperture rings function flawlessly and I recorded beautiful images. In fact, I started enjoying manual focusing and iris control so much that I am planning to purchase 24 and 35 mm version of these lenses soon.

I use this lens for stills and video work and it performs well. The click free aperture is great for video work. The glass is fast for low light work and the gear teeth make it easy to attach my follow focus rig.

Comments about Bower 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

Purchased primarily for studio video production with 60D and 5D3. Will also go on location for occastional video and photography work.

Lens feels substantial (i.e. good) in your hands for it's size. Initial testing with 5D3 produced beautifully sharp video and photos both in studio (chromakey) and indoor/outdoors (Christmas family portraits and a few candids). Rings operate very smoothly. Lens hood is cheap plastic, but fits and functions properly. Have not rigged it to use the gears yet, but expect it will work fine when the time comes.

Wide open, it produced cleaner images than the Canon 24-105 in low light.

I would not use this for fast moving event photography - lack of automation makes it unsuitable.

Being accustomed to Canon photo lenses, it was a bit of an adjustment, though not difficult, to go fully manual. I expect to really like the manual aperture with more use.

I plan to purchase other focal lengths from the same manufacterer, if not under the same brand name (Bower = Rokinon = etc...).

This is a great lens for anyone who shoots on a DSLR! I use this lens for videos I produce through my business and I absolutely love it! The de-clicked aperture is amazing and the follow focus rings give you a great option to use this with a rig. I had heard the compact size was a problem for some, but I have found it to be a plus because it makes it easier to tote this lens around town. I highly recommend this lens and I am thinking about even using it to shoot a film project I plan on producing early next year.

Comments about Bower 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF:

I use this lens for event videography, primarily for range in low-light scenarios. It works well, but is nearly impossible to use without a tripod, or a very steady hand on a monopod.

The amount of light it allows at 1.5 is incredible. I rented it just to try it out, and ended up buying it, as well as the 24 and 35 because I was so impressed.

The declicked apature is great for switching from a bright area to a dim area on the fly.

The focus is extremely shallow at 1.5, and it can be very difficult to keep a moving subject in focus. If you shoot events, you'll likely find yourself constantly micro-managing focus.

If you need something longer than a 50 for low light, you can't beat the quality or price.
