The Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount) is a wide-angle prime lens designed specifically for use on APS-C-sized image sensors, and as such provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm. This lens is compatible with Sony E mirrorless cameras and supports all camera functions, including autofocus and exposure control.

The Distagon design of this lens integrates a floating element design that includes two aspherical elements and three partial-dispersion elements to reduce aberrations and distortion to produce high image clarity, sharpness, and even brightness. Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have also been applied to all lens surfaces to improve light transmission and image contrast by minimizing surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting.

The construction of the lens features a metal lens barrel with rubberized control rings for high precision when manually focusing. A rigid metal bayonet mount ensures accurate alignment and a nearly circular nine-blade aperture works to produce an aesthetic out-of-focus highlight quality.

Sony E Compatibility
Designed for use on Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras and provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm. The lens offers complete compatibility with all camera functions, including accurate autofocus and exposure control. It features a wide f/2.8 maximum aperture that aids in low-light shooting as well as greater control over the focus plane for shallow depth of field and selective focus applications.
Optical Design
This lens features the Distagon optical design with a floating element construction and includes two aspherical elements and three partial dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion while offering increased sharpness and even illumination. Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
Physical Design
The lens features a rigid, durable metal barrel with rubberized control rings to provide improved handling abilities. The metal bayonet mount ensures a solid connection between the camera and lens, and a nine-blade, nearly circular aperture is used to smoothly render out-of-focus highlights.

The 12mm f2.8 Touit is as handsome to look at as it is to use. The anodized light metal outer shell with its solid and snug fitting rubber focusing ring contains a wonderful eleven element set of optics, a nine blade iris. Shot in vertical "portrait" mode on the NEX-7, the 12mm Touit enables architectural shots without vertical convergence (as with a view camera) and I have seen NO evidence of barrel distortion nor chromatic aberation. Diffraction probably sets in after f11 but without formal testing on my part, I'd guess it is quite mild (the attached photo was shot at ISO 100 and f11.

Wide angle lenses are not the most common focal lengths for shooting pictures. Typically, people buy these types of lenses for specific purposes -- typically for real estate or architectural photography, or for wide angle landscapes. In my case, I was looking for a lens for use in my underwater photography (I have a professional grade scuba housing for my Sony NEX camera). I tested the lens extensively, and really enjoyed the images, but in the end, I decided to return the lens.

I don't use wide angle lenses that much on land, but I do use them extensively underwater -- particularly for underwater video, as well as photos. This lens takes beautiful pictures, but be warned, it focus hunts like crazy!!! Seriously, it will drain your camera's battery. It is pretty much a continual focus hunt. The focus hunting was annoying, but if I primarily wanted this for land photography, I would have kept the lens. However, since I am reliant on the autofocus underwater (where you can't open a scuba housing and use the focus ring), I don't think this lens would have cut it. I think would have been especially problematic for underwater video.

That said, the images are gorgeous -- rich, textured, beautiful color. I practiced what is known as "close focus wide angle" shots since that is what I try to do underwater, and I got some great shots of flowers and food -- even though this is not a macro lens. For landscapes or architectural shots, where you can intervene and focus manually when needed, this is a great lens. For the right purposes, this is a nice tool -- just not for the purposes I need it. On balance, I would give this a tightly qualified positive recommendation.

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

Great lens for outdoor landscape and capturing architectural elements. Love the sharp photos and bokeh. I wish they will integrate OSS. The real downfall was during video recording. You can hear the focus noise throughout. I already upgraded my NEX-7 firmware and still same results. After a week of use, I have to return it. I will try the Sony 10-18 mm next. Overall, if you are taking photos only, I will strongly recommend this lens.

    Good quality but glitchy

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

I like the clarity and the picture quality. Great for landscapes and fun for some nature and people shots but the camera sometimes freezes up when I'm using this lens. Maybe there is an update that will help this problem.

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

Excellent sharpness into the corners a f/4 and above, improves to f/8. Nicely built and lightweight. Yes, it makes a little noise when focusing, but so minor you really don't notice (nor does your subject). Rubber adjustment rings for focus and aperture a nice design touch that work well. Despite complaints in other reviews, I do not have a problem with easily adjusted aperture ring... you get used to it quickly. Adapts out beautifully to 77mm filters with no vignetting even with two stacked. I got mine refurbished from Zeiss, at a 40% discount, so certainly will not complain about price, though I was ready to dive in at suggested retail. A nice alternative to the excellent (and equally good) Fuji x 14mm lens, especially if you already have the kit 18-55mm or plan to get the upcoming 16-50mm f/2.8. I have fallen in love with this little jewel very quickly. Highly recommended!

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

Interested in a extreme wide angle lens to bring on a trip along the California coast, I took the chance of investing in this 12mm Zeiss Touit for my NEX-7. I fell in love with this lens as soon as I unboxed it. I find the design very pleasing and enjoy the handling of its solid build quality. But the performance surpassed my expectations. Distortion in raw format was minimal for such a wide-angle lens, and it can be further corrected in post-processing. The lens was so interesting that I began to use it for all kinds of shooting, not just landscapes. I found all kinds of dramatic results from shooting the most ordinary subjects. As you would expect with a Zeiss lens, pictures and sharp and colors are rich. Highly recommended!

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

This has excellent Image Quality but it is a bit noisy when focusing, and it isn't fully compatible with the A6000's phase detection.

When it focuses, it sometimes takes a bit longer than my other E-mount lenses, and it has a relatively louder mechanical, sound when focusing.

Although it is only F2.8, I'll probably use this Lens mostly outdoors so it shouldn't be a problem.

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

Very nice lens. Sharp, minimal distortion for such a wide angle. I couldn't see any chromatic aberration at all. I bought it for use with the a6000. So far I love the results I have been getting with it.

The only thing that I wish was different is the hybrid AF function that is not supported on this lens (yet). My understanding is that Zeiss will put out a firmware update to enable this function later this summer.

My first opportunity to use this lens was to photograph the "Stunning Lady of the Lake Mosiac" in Stockholm's city hall with my NEX 7. It did a super job in the mixed lighting conditions of the building's hall. I'm sure your question is would I buy it again - yup, I certainly would.

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

The rendering in this lens approaches the quality of the glorious Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 lens for SLRs. It is far lighter than its big brother, but the optical performance is still excellent. Vignetting is well controlled, and distortion is minimal and easily corrected in post processing.

The Zeiss experience start the moment you receive the package....very fancy packing to remind you this is a nice little lens.

Like the colour rendering, build and touch. Excellent addition to my street photography kit.

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

Great lens for the nex 7, a significant improvement over the other available options. Excellent contrast and resolution, exceptional handling of chromatic aberrations given the wide field of view, and overall performance that is exactly as expected.

The size is a bit large mostly due to the flare at the end, but is quite manageable with this small camera. Focus is slower than with a native Sony lens but nothing that impacts a shooters workflow in any meaningful way.

Overall i highly recommend this lens

** Note - make sure to upgrade the camera firmware to the newest version. I was originally using the 1.02 version and the lens struggled to focus. The update made a world of difference by correcting this issue.

Comments about Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount):

This is one sharp lens with a fantastic angle of view. I could see no fall of image quality even wide open.
Its a great lens for availble light photography, such as interiors of churchs, museum, etc.
Beside its wider angle of view it is much sharper than the Sony 16mm wide angle.
