The Photoshop Lightroom 5 Software for Mac and Windows (Boxed Version) from Adobe is a complete photo management and editing suite for Mac OS X and Windows. Ideal for enthusiasts and professionals alike, Lightroom takes a nondestructive approach to photo editing, leaving the original files uncompromised. All your adjustments and edits are stored in a database and applied to an image on the fly, so that you'll always be able to go back to the original image. This enables you to execute as many post-processing adjustments on a photo as you'd like, without making permanent changes to the original image.

Lightroom also serves as a powerful organizational tool for your photographs. Organize photos to suit your needs via an intuitive folder-based data structure. Lightroom lets you store images on multiple storage devices, and it stores low-resolution previews of each image in its central database, allowing you to browse photos even when the original files are offline. You'll be able to search your images based on any number of criteria, accelerating the process of locating a specific image.

Lightroom's interface is divided into five major components: Library, Develop, Slideshow, Print, and Web. Each screen serves its own purpose, and you can go back and forth between them easily. There is some overlap in functionality, but for the most part, the components are compartmentalized.

The Library screen is where you organize and browse your photos. Enjoy full access to all folders in your library from this screen, allowing you to reorganize as needed. Apply keywords, ratings, color labels, and metadata additions to images. You can make custom searches to create "Collections" based on any of these criteria. The "Smart Collections" function updates on the fly as additional images meet your criteria. For example, you can have an up-to-date collection of all images that you've given a 5-star rating. There is also a "Quick Develop" panel allowing you to make minor adjustments to an image, without having to venture into the Develop screen.

The Library also serves as the gateway to import and export images. When you click "Import," the Import window expands to fill your entire display. Browse through your hard drive or a memory card to find images for import. You can leave the images in their original location, copy or move to a different folder, or copy and convert them to Adobe's DNG format. Apply Develop settings, add metadata, and add keywords during import, such as one for the camera used to capture the photos. Rename files and save a second copy to a backup drive during import.

When you've finished editing, use the Library screen to export your photos with ease. You can use the "Export" function, which brings up a window with numerous settings -- including image size, sharpening, file format, and the like -- that you can customize. There is a "Publish Services" section, enabling you to send images to your hard drive or Flickr with ease. Create as many presets for Publish Services as you'd like, giving you one-click access to frequently used export operations. This section can be further expanded via third-party plug-ins, available from Adobe's Lightroom Exchange website.

The second major component of Lightroom is the Develop screen. This is where you'll do the vast majority of your photo editing and toning. Perform any adjustment imaginable here, including color temperature, exposure, black levels, contrast, sharpness, and brightness, to name just a few. You can make adjustments via sliders or tone curves, discretely modify color channels, and convert images to black and white. Numerous presets are available, allowing you to quickly apply a certain "look" to a photo, and you can create your own presets based on your favorite settings.

The Develop screen also features useful History and Snapshot functions. History lets you browse through all of the adjustments you've made to an image, in the order that they were made, so that you can revert back to any stage in the image process. At any time, create a Snapshot of an image, which saves all of the settings you've applied, allowing you to continue to experiment with a photo after you've found a look you like.

Remove dust spots and red eye from photos, thanks to Lightroom's spot editing tools. Create image masks to apply graduated filter adjustments to a photo, or use the brush tool to dodge, burn, and make other spot adjustments. You can add vignettes and simulated film grain to images, great for breathing analog life into digital photos.

With distortion correction, "defishing" of images captured via fisheye lenses can be done from within the program. Correct for both fisheye and rectilinear distortion, a capability highly useful for those shooting with extreme wide angle lenses. Numerous lens profiles are included with the software, and you can save your own presets for oft-used lenses.

Lens corrections can also eliminate the keystone effect that ensues when your camera is not straight-on a subject. Basic crop and rotation tools are also available for quick and easy adjustments. If there is anything that can't be handled by Lightroom, it's easy to export a photo to Photoshop CS4 or CS5 for editing; any changes you make to an image in Photoshop will be automatically reflected in Lightroom.

Lightroom's other three screens are all about sharing your images. The Slideshow screen gives you all the tools necessary to create digital slideshows of your images, complete with transitions and music. View these from within Lightroom or export them to a PDF or video file to share.

The Print screen allows you to print your images in any way imaginable. Adjustable for many standard paper sizes, it lets you visually lay out photos on them, allowing you to maximize the number of photos on a single page -- thus helping to reduce printing costs. Lightroom can automatically position photos so that space on a page will be used as efficiently as possible. Adjust prints for different paper types and color profiles, and add a signature plate if you wish.

The Web screen gives you numerous means of outputting photos to the web. Adobe includes a number of HTML and Flash galleries, allowing you to create a web gallery without any knowledge of programming. These can be customized to suit your needs, and third-party galleries are available via the Adobe Lightroom Exchange website.

Top new features in Lightroom 5 include Smart Previews, improved photo book creation, video slide shows, an Advanced Healing Brush for quickly making images spotless, an Upright tool for easily straightening images, and a Radial Gradient tool for emphasizing important parts of images.

Lightroom is sold as multiplatform software, which means it can be installed on either Mac OS X or Windows. It's compatible with Windows 7 and 8, as well as with Mac OS X v10.7 or 10.8. This is the English language version of the software.

I bought this product because Aperture (Apple's competing product) was so slow to offer support for the Nikon D4S. When Lightroom arrived, I had high hopes. Lightroom installation went well. But as soon as I tried to use it, I began experiencing problems. If I didn't have anything to compare Lightroom to, I might like it better. However, having used Aperture for the last decade, I found it very difficult to transition to Lightroom. Specifically, the whole scheme for storing photos is different. Aperature incorporates them all in one master file that's easy to backup. Lightroom stores them as individual photos anywhere you happen to download them. This can get pretty confusing and, I think, makes the system more vulnerable to accidental disruption...for instance if you decided to delete or move an image while at the Finder level.

Another pet peeve. The interface relied heavily on tiny icons which were far from intuitive and difficult to decipher. This was hard on my aging eyes and really slowed me down. Worse, the commands didn't seem to be logically clustered. And many often-used commands were nested within other commands where they were invisible to a novice user. Adobe products are generally powerful and bulletproof, but the learning curve is long, difficult and steep.

About the time I was ready to throw up my hands in frustration, Apple released an Aperture patch for the D4S. After downloading and testing it, it took me about a nanosecond to delete Lightroom and go back to Aperture.

The other thing I worry about with Lightroom is Adobe's forced migration to the Creative Cloud. They have announced that they will no longer upgrade many of the products they SELL. Basically, you can only RENT them on a monthly basis. If you decide you no longer want to rent the product, the product stops working. You could lose access to years of work. Tens of thousands of creative professionals have signed online petitions asking Adobe to reverse course on this policy. So far, they have turned a deaf ear to their users.

Net: I've decided NOT to use Lightroom at all.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Software for Mac and Windows (Boxed Version):

As a hack hobbyist photographer, storing and editing photos has always been an annoyance. Producing great looking edits when they are needed can be intimidating. Preserving RAW images while editing with some programs gets tricky. Lightroom 5 has been a fantastic purchase for me. It is easy to use. B&H and others have fantastic tutorials available on YouTube. Anyone can learn this. The editing tools are plentiful and powerful. My main PC is a powerful machine, and editing on it is lightning fast. However, even my cheap Dell with a low end i3 processor and integrated graphics does the job without much fuss. I do get slight delays when I'm trying to move fast. I expected it to be far, far worse. They have obviously done a great job keeping the program from getting too bloated. The moral is that a high end computer is not required to use Lightroom effectively. This is a great program. Highly recommended!

I love this program. You can use it straight out of the box without any training, and it can manipulate jpgs better than I would have expected. Haven't tried it with the a7s raw files yet but that will be next.

        Happy I Upgraded

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Software for Mac and Windows (Boxed Version):

I have been using Lightroom for a few years now and have come to know which featuress I like to use regularly and which ones I just don't. I debated for a bit about upgrading. But I finally decided to go for it and I am so happy I did. I have only been using the new version for about a week, but have already found several changes that I love, including changes to the cropping tool, the healing brush, and the ability to work remote (smart previews). I am excited to see what else Lightroom 5 has in store for me!

I made the choice to go hard disc vs. subscription after consulting with several professional photographers. Break even comes after 14 months and I already have 5.6 as part of the package. Don't know if we will have a choice next time around but it just made financial sense for me. So much to learn and use I don't think I'll get to need the next full version anytime soon. Booted up and installed like a champ. My opinion? Look at it from the dollars and cents and see what makes sense (NPI) for you.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Software for Mac and Windows (Boxed Version):

First off, for what Lightroom is meant to do, it is best-in-class. For most development level work, it has capabilities that sometimes exceed Photoshop. It has basic lens and skew correction, great rubber-stamp like abilities, and a built in library for tagging pictures and creating collections. Emphasizing shadows or highlights are a breeze.Finding more advanced tools is difficult, but this was to avoid intimidating the beginner. There is no documentation, but help is all over the net.It is when you get outside of the intended use that problems appear. Lightroom is designed to import photos directly from the camera or memory card and place them in some unknown location that the user doesn't need to know about. If the user tries to control any of this, they will run into problems. The file browser is quite buggy. You will normally have to open a folder, close it, and open it again to get all the sub-folders to appear. There is code that *prevents* the user from creating a library on a remote drive (like a NAS), so sharing between a desktop and a laptop or backing up the library is very hard.Overall, Lightroom is worth having, but there are some things that need improvement.(All comments are about Lightroom in Windows 7 64)

Just had this for a few weeks but it really is very nice for post processing my RAW files, in particular shots that needed fine tuning because of poor lighting.
I certainly have rescued some shots that the software that came with my camera would not have had a chance of recovering.

There is obviously a learning curve and I will likely get a tutorial for LR5, to learn some tips etc. but just starting out I have not had trouble through just some basic trial and error in figuring out import and processing.

I have had LR v5 for about a month. It's a pleasure to use and is capable of quick enhancements which are excellent. I didn't get it for it's database capability, but I can see how it would work well with my "home-made" folders once I get aroud to full utilization.I'm saving the 5th star until I have had more time to explore its capabilities.

I really love how quickly and easily you can enhance your photos. I also love the keywords feature- super helpful for organization and going back to find photos. This is a great product. It will take some time to learn how to fully utilize it but you can also just start organzing and enhancing photos right away.

I have used a couple of other brands of editing tools, moving to Lightroom was a bit of a shock. My main complaint is the program came in a box and that seemed to be that. I got into a bit of a mess when I tried to "wing it". I needed to e-mail some pictures and send others to be printed, a major problem. Since then I have discovered there is lots of excellent help places on line including Adobe! I wish there was something that came with the disc that said something like .... if you are new to Lightroom visit www.adobe.com and select "getting started with photoshop lightroom 5" by Julieanne Kost. There are 14 tutorials to view.
