I purchased this lens specifically to use at the wider apertures not for more light per se, but for the very shallow DOF. I plan to use this mostly for close ups such as still life and food shots, shots where I want a very soft background, candid shots in social gatherings and casual portraits. As bonus, it certainly has given me some "breathing room" in low light conditions.

I checked numerous reviews and this lens seemed to measure sharper from F1.4 through F4 than the AF-S 50mm F1.5G lens, which then measured sharper after F4. I don't plan on using this lens much beyond F4 so I choose the AF-D version.

I am currently using this lens on a D80. So we have full frame lens made for 35mm film cameras being used on a DX-format digital camera. I added the Hoya Pro 1 Digital filter to help eliminate internal reflections that the coatings on the newer design lenses are supposed to eliminate. The field of view is of course more like a 75mm on a film camera so you do get slight image compression you might expect from a telephoto in that range. The slight image compression and effective length of 75mm presents both advantages and challenges.

Personally, I LOVE the color and contrast rendering of the AF-D lenses more so than the modern AF-S lenses. I am sure this will be a minority opinion. At F1.4 I was not expecting razor sharp and it is not, though it is sharp enough for what I wanted. Stopped down a bit it seems as sharp as my other (more modern design) lenses. At wide apertures, the colors are very natural and not overly saturated or contrasty...which is precisely what I wanted.

The bokeh can at times exhibit some "outlines" or appear busy or jagged, though I find this much as the same as on the AF 50mm F1.8D lens that I have tried.

Focus is as fast and accurate as my other lenses. I purchased the Grey Market version. The lens is currently doing everything I had hoped for. Being relatively new to using a DSLR I am looking forward to exploring the world at F1.4!

I usually shy away from primes, but the small size and large aperture made this one appealing since I shoot at crowded club events. After a few weeks of use, I find that the lens is very sharp stopped down to F/2.8, but at 1.4 images are very soft. Focus is accurate and fast, a definite plus, but that's where all the good ends. I'm disappointed with the build quality as the lens just feels too plastic. It just doesn't compare to any of the newer nikkor primes, such as the 60mm AF-S or the 85mm PC-E. Also, the bokeh is a bit harsh due to the 7 bladed design. The lens is prone to CA and flaring, so you have to be careful when shooting in certain conditions. Overall, I'm not too impressed, but the small size and speed of this lens makes it useful for club shoots. Nikon seriously needs to update some of there primes and this lens would be a good start.

This is my go to lens for video. With this 50mm prime I use it for interviews and getting a nice shallow depth of field when shooting b-roll. I love having the ability of shooting with a f/1.4 lens for those specail artistic shots.

Including a f/1.4 shot of Maestro The Cat, shot with my D200 in 2007. Sure, it's a D lens from my film days, but it works great on my D200, D700 and D300s. It's still holding up well, so why replace it? I shoot a lot of available light photos of my pooch, and she absolutely does NOT like flash! So, I shoot wide-open a lot with WB set to incandescent - and D700 at IS0 6400 (looks great!). I focus on her eye (she's usually laying down), and I don't care if the rest of her Husky fur is soft! I guess I'm just not an "everything has to be tack-sharp" and "absolutely no noise" kind of person. Since it's a D lens, you've also got a DOF scale, so you can shoot in manual focus mode at f/16, focus at a bit less than 20', and shoot NON-tack-sharp pics all day from about 10' to infinity. It's really fun! Great lens.

Through my own incomplete research, I ordered the wrong lens. I contacted B&H and the problem was corrected immediately. I was surprised at how easy it was to exchange the lens I had bought for the one I needed. Now I'm happy with the first photos I've made, and mechanically the lens works perfectly, as well.

I got this lens last week and have really been enjoying it! Great bokeh and does very well in low light! The only issue I've had so far is that it's a little tricky to attach because it doesn't have a dot on it to line up with the camera body.

A 50mm prime lens is the one lens to own, if you only buy one lens. This Nikon 50mm f/1.4D is fantastic. I bought it used to go along with my refurbished Nikon D600. And there is my kit, and the pair work beautifully together. I never miss a picture. Focuses right on, and the color and bokeh are fantastic. I've always owned and used a Yashica 3 SLR with a 50mm f/1.9 and that was a great lens. My Yashica still takes dynamite film photos. The D600 is my first DSLR and this 50mm f/1.4D is the perfect complement. I own a wide angle and a telephoto zoom, but this 50mm prime is always my go to lens. Go to the used section at B&H. You won't be disappointed.

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

Works great on my D7000. I also use some Nikon extension rings it works well with. Great DOF and beautiful bokeh. Solid build. The manual focus ring is also very smooth. The fit is a little tight on the D7000, but works fine. I would recommend the 52mm Nikon Clear NC Glass Filter.

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

Used on a D800 the focus is really fast and accurate. Very happy with the quality. The only issue I had was that the lens was shipped with a very cheap slip on rear lens cap. The slip on cap would pop off in a draw string case leaving the rear element exposed. This was unacptable. B&H replaced this unusable cap with the standard Nikon rear cap at no cost. The question is - Is this the new Nikon standard or did I get someones return.
