The 3TB Network HDD Retail Kit from WD features a WD Red internal HDD equipped with a SATA 6 Gb/s interface along with a large 3TB storage capacity giving you fast access to a large amount of data. This drive is designed for optimal performance in 24/7 NAS environments. Along with enhanced NAS performance you also benefit from enhanced energy efficiency, greatly reducing the cost involved in running a variety of NAS solutions.

Optimal compatibility for NAS systems
This WD Network Drive is specifically engineered for NAS systems with up to 5 drive bays. Each drive is extensively tested for compatibility in the unique 24x7 operating environment and demanding system requirements of home and small business NAS.
NASware 3.0 Technology
NASware 3.0 further optimizes the WD Red drive for the NAS environment with added support for 6 to 8 NAS bays. WD Red now supports small NAS systems from 1 to 8 bays thanks to NASware 3.0, which further improves drive compatibility and reliability. At 48 TB of total capacity in an 8 bay system, WD Red expands your NAS experience.
Energy Efficient
Take advantage of reduced power consumption and lower operating temperature, resulting in a more reliable and affordable solution for always on 24x7 NAS environments.
Enhanced Reliability
With a 35% MTBF improvement over standard desktop drives, the WD Network drives are designed and manufactured to be a more reliable and robust solution for your NAS system.
3D Active Balance Plus
The enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves the overall drive performance and reliability. Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system, reduce the hard drive life span, and degrade the performance over time.

I bought a pair of these to put in my new Synology Diskstation (I reviewed it as well if you are in the market for one). THey are built for 24/7 use. They're a bit more $$ than standard drives but isn't your data worth it? mine sure is.

    I purchased 4 drives and a DS415+ NAS box 2 weeks ago.

The next day after I initialized the box and copied my data over it reported one drive was unplugged. I thought it was due to a loose bay so I replugged it (with shutdown and restart properly). The drive showed up again and I rebuilt the RAID 5 volume. It took roughly a day.

The next day the same issue happened again. The same disk was reported unplugged. I thought it was some glitch of the NAS system. I replugged it and rebuilt the volume again. The drive showed up.

And it was reported unplugged again. I talked to the NAS support and told them it was their hardware's problem, because SMART test reported no error and I have never seen a hard drive failing on the first day like this (I started playing with 500MB hard drives back in last century and have seen a lot). I was suggested to change the bay to see if it is the bay's problem or the drive's. So I switched two drives and rebuilt the volume for the 3rd time. All seemed ok again.

And you know what, it turned out to be the drive's problem. The drive failed the same way as before but this time it was in a different bay.

The drive is now being sent back to B&H for a replacement. I have no idea how WD does QA.

Comments about 3TB Network HDD Retail Kit (WD30EFRX, Red Drive):

I am sorry but WD's warranty is a joke. Bought two brand new HDDs, one failed a few months after being in my RAID 1 NAS. Returned under warranty (had to pay for shipping) - got back a RECERTIFIED HDD. Which, of course, failed after 1 month and lost ALL data. Returned it again (had to pay for shipping) - again got a RECERTIFIED HDD which was simply DOA and could not start at all. So their "5 year warranty" is simply feeding you with faulty recertified HDDs until you run out of money for shipping them dead ones. Great idea, WD. Sorry, cannot trust you my data anymore. Going to your competitors.

I now have 4 of these drives and have been using one for over 2 years. These drives are excellent for using in a setup that houses movies for Plex, as I use them for. If I were to get rid of these drives, I'd only replace them with their Pro counterparts.

This drive lasted 10 months in my Synology NAS and then crashed. The warranty replacement lasted less than 48 hours. Let's see if WDC takes care of this or if I have to pay to send their bad replacement drive back.

Installed in an external USB 3.0 adapter and initialized and formatted fine, 1 partition 2.7 TB as expected. Moved to internal SATA cable and Windows 8.1 disk manager showed as 1 partition and unallocated space and would not do anything to the drive. After much online reading, I had to use a DOS program to reset the drive (while on SATA cable) and then disk manager initialized and formatted it fine with1 partition 2.7 TB as expected. Who knew... I always prepped my drives using the external USB 3.0 device previously but it won't work with > 2 TB drives.

Recommended WD Red drives for WDMyCloud EX4 and took 3-4 to go across the country. Took a few minutes to install. Very low noise to nothing when they're running and got plenty of diskspace. Will come back for more at later time.

Aside from the stock drives in my computers, I have never bought or considered anything other than Western Digital. I run two of these in RAID1 and am very happy with the performance.

This is a solid, stable, reliable performer in the NAS category. I have about 32 of these drives, and have had 0 actual failures. I did, however, have them report failure under high temperature (>100F degrees), and then perform fine after being moved into a new enclosure. The only downside, is sustained streaming reads from ZFS are lower than what I have come to expect from 7200 or 10k drives. All that being said, you get exactly what is advertised. A solid home NAS disk, that's great for backups, streaming video, and the like.

I looked around for a NAS drive and everything said this was the best. Got it home installed it and preforms as good as it should. Reads and writes as fast as I can throw data at it.

Comments about 3TB Network HDD Retail Kit (WD30EFRX, Red Drive):

I have been using WD Reds for a while in my multi computer household.
This time I decided to jump over the 2GB barrier.
There is a learning curve if you are replacing a (bootable) RAID of MBR drives with the ones over 2GB ones (GPT).
At some point I even regreted that I bought 3GB drives.
Fortunately, I figured it all out. Now, it's just the drive quality. They are great - silent, cool, reliable.
I was using WD Blacks before but their noise was too much to bare for a quiet office. The reds cost less too.

Not as fast as the WD blacks but less than half the cost, use them in my OWC Thunderbay IV RAID cases

8 out of 8 of these arrived working perfectly, and have been running non stop for about a month (I will post again with an hour count at my first failure)

For a single internal drive I would want something faster (I think these are energy savers) or even SSD but with 4 bay RAID cases they rip and are not even close to being the weakest speed link in my system also more than fast enough for back up as single drives.... the price is less than half the cost as the blacksso for backup I would much rather get 2 of these that one black (all drives will fail, 2 is always better than 1)
