Domain Integration

Extensive Support for Active Directory & LDAP
Synology NAS provides extensive support for Active Directory and LDAP to give businesses the flexibility and simplicity they need to manage a complex organization. By joining to the Active Directory or LDAP domain service, end users gain single sign-on to the Synology NAS through their domain account. IT managers can host their own LDAP server and centrally manage access and account control with ease. With the same domain account, end users can also access various DSM services directly.
Joining Active Directory
The Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) from Microsoft provides many advantages in managing a complex network. IT managers can centrally store device names, user names, passwords, and other information in one place, enhance network security, reduce overhead cost and more. When a Synology NAS is joined to an Active Directory, IT managers don't need to create separate accounts and duplicate security information and end users can use a single domain account to access the Synology NAS.
Hosting LDAP Server
Synology NAS can act as an independent LDAP server to provide businesses with centralized account and permission management and enhanced security through a simple-to-use management interface. IT managers can use the LDAP server to create domain user accounts and define access rights for shared folders, storage quota and various DSM applications on the Synology NAS. IT managers can also join a Synology NAS to an existing LDAP domain service.
DSM Apps Integration
In addition to accessing shared folders and files in the network, Synology NAS also allows end users to access various DSM services and apps directly with a single domain account.

Synology High Availability

Ensure Business Continuity
The Synology High Availability solution provides a reliable, simple-to-use failover mechanism to recover from physical and service failures
Automate system recovery and resume service efficiently
Heartbeat mechanism to detect and respond to system failure timely
Web-based, easy to use management interface
Heartbeat & Failover Protection
Synology High Availability harnesses dual Synology NAS storage servers into a high available cluster. The Heartbeat feature allows a primary and backup server to determine if the other is "alive." When one of the servers experiences service or physical failure, the other will fail over resources and resumes service automatically. Install SHA on your Synology NAS storage servers to minimize service downtime.

In some ways I wish i had bought the next step up to get the USB3 connections for the back up drives but at an additional $100 I felt that was over priced. This unit has the same fast RAM. It has a faster (Although single core) processor. Easy to install. Light weight. MANY more networking options than I'll ever need. It;s fast and quite. Both my PCs and my MAC read and write to it perfectly.

I put 2, 3TB Maxtor Red NAS drives in it and formatted them for Raid 0 to get max space. I then attached 2 Goflex drives I had previously bought to try and network the MAC and the PC (Without a lot of luck BTW) as back up drives and set the Synology BU program to make a full BU and then incrementals every week. It can be done more or less often as you need.
I set mine up as a server so all 4 computers have access to the same files. You could set it up to be the backups of your computers if you like but I wanted it as a file server. So 6TB of space with 6TB of attached backup space and I'm ready to rock!

I will say to stay away from the free cloud ap it comes with. I have very large photo files stores on the Synology and that ap grabs a ton of space, in fact more than I had left in my case. It takes enough to hold MANY copies of your files. Search on line and you will see what I'm talking about.

Software is great UI, however. Speed read/write is much less than published. Quite, and looks good. Adding drives could be much easier, why we need to use screws? Also, if you want to use block-level don't follow quick start, it will be too late. You need to start with clean drives. Some features couldn't get it working or maybe not exist in this model as software is generic for many models. Things like snapshots, block-level single file. Will be great if they add another Lan NIC.

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

I have been using a 4 bay drive as a local source for my backups and it worked great, except that it connected to my desktop via eSATA so I could only look at the files with my desk top computer but not my lap top. Well, my desktop has some issues and has been in the shop a lot recently with some intermittent problems. I had been thinking about setting up a NAS as a back up and after reading a lot of reviews I picked up a Synology DS213j. I also ordered two Western Digital Red 3 tb drives to add to the unit, and the unit is now about 60% full with my photo archive.

It was easy to set up and I have been using it for about 2 weeks now and it has been great. I can find and look at my photo archive from any of the several computers in the house, via wired and wifi connections, and the unit is quiet and much faster access that I had thought it would be from the reviews I had read. I would not want to have it as my only access to my photos as it is not that fast!

All in all the unit is everything advertised and works very well. I wish I would have picked up one earlier than I did. I access the data from both my windows computers and my iMac.

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

As the model is from the last year the price is acceptable. The only difference from DS214 is that the DS213j has one-core processor. All other features are the same.First of all, I would like to warn those who do not like digging inside the software internals or wandering through forums searching for answers. This device is not for you, guys. If you like to read documentation, google for answers, experimenting - a good choice. You ask me why do I think that? For example, you transfer all your video/music library to the device. At some moment you see that the CPU load ~ 100%.You are starting to search the reason for that, you open Resource Monitor, Processes tab and discover that process with name synomediaparserd do that load. When the CPU load is high the NAS gets slower and less responsive. You can't stop this from the dashboard for some reason (why? ask synology devs)You turn on SSH. You login as root, you enter some Linux commands, you try different ways to kill daemons, processes etc.Do you like that? Well, I do sometimes. From the other hand you can install hdds, init them and load stuff not bothering yourself about CPU or memory load. All will work as expected. But sometimes the system gets slower and you cannot speed it up.BUT. If you like to control all your devices and know what happens inside them, you dig into details. As I do. From my point of view, the device worth its money.

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

This is my second experience with Synology DiskStations. I love how easy they are to use (however, I must confess that I have a Computer Science degree and most things tech come as second nature to me).I love how easy it was to connect to my PS3 to show pictures I backed up to the unit. In Windows / Mac / Linux, I found it easy to map the network location to a folder and can easily manage files as if it were a local folder.Overall, it is a great place to put your pictures if you are worried that your main computer hard drive is filling up. Remember it is not truly a back up of your data (a house fire / flood may completely destroy the unit). If that is your intent, look into Amazon Glacier.

The Ajax based Disk Mgmt System (DSM) and the ease of use via the GUI is superb! It has enough power to use readily available add-ons (via the Package Manager) such as SVN, CloudSync, etc.

Very reliable and easy to migrate to!

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

I purchased this unit to use as a LAN backup device, to serve several small websites using PHP and MySQL, and as the hub for my home automation system. So far everything I've thrown at it has worked far better than I've come to expect from NAS devices in the past. The online help answers most questions along the way and if I try to setup a feature without doing prerequisites, it pops up a window telling me what I've done wrong and links me to where to fix it. One question to customer support was answered within 24 hours. I considered getting the DS214 or DS214+ before purchasing this but haven't noticed any real speed deficit from the single core processor so far.

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

Synology made it easy to back up your photos. The software works great with Windows, Ubuntu, Samsung Smart TV and iPhones allowing my house to easily view and edit photos from where I want.
The only issue I had was trying out Synology's BETA face recognition, it ran the NAS at full power for a couple of weeks with no indication of how much longer it would take (I do have thousands of 18meg pics from a Canon 7D). However, during this time the system was smart enough to make this a low priority item and still allowed me to do what I wanted in with minimum delay. I called Synology after trying everything I could to stop the face recognition (I am computer/network savvy) and they were honest... they admitted that this was occasionally a problem, hence still in beta, and emailed me the fix. Outstanding customer service with a great product = 5 starts in my books.

Very happy with the NAS. Very quick to set up with 2 3TB drives set as Synology Hybrid RAID. Disk Station Manager Synology's NAS manager application is fantastic. Easy to use, quickly set up multiple iSCSI targets, Apple TimeMachine share and multiple shares for IP cameras. Will purchase a larger NAS by Synology from B&H when space requirements increase. B&H as usual shipped very fast (I had the NAS in 3 days outside DC) and was well protected with recyclable inflatable padding. B&H also had the best price. Thanks B&H!

I bought this product so I could backup all my movies and use it as a media server. Thirty minutes after receiving my delivery, and one firmware patch later, the box was fully functional. I couldn't ask for anything more simple.

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

This is a really nice NAS server. I bought it as well as 2 3TB drives from B&H. I had everything installed and running in about 10 minutes. Configuration took longer for me to figure out. I started by dumping my 35gb music library to the server. That part was easy. Sharing my library with a couple of Win7 PCs was very straight-forward. Configuring backup took me a bit longer to figure out. There are lots of options and the documentation should have included a step-by-step for a simple home-based network backup. I cannot comment on quality (only owned the box for a few weeks so far) nor on support (haven't needed it). If you're not familiar with NAS servers (or not so technically inclined) then do look at the forum and other information as you might get a bit overwhelmed by the jargon and all the features. But if you pick this server for backups and sharing of music, pix, etc., etc., you cannot go wrong.

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

Although I am still in the process of getting it set up, I am mostly happy with it so far. Setup is a bit unclear in a few places, for someone who's not dealt with this kind of device before. It is clearly capable of some nice and customizable features, in terms of e.g. photo and video storage and access. Some of the ways that the centralized and user-specific photo libraries work are a bit unclear at first (and perhaps still). Here and in various other places, the features seem powerful but not always fully polished and/or clearly documented. That said, once you get things working, it seems to be really quite powerful and more than capable for my needs. One caveat that is so-far not a big issue for me, but has caught others by surprise: this particular model is not (yet??) able to run the Plex Media Server software. (Other synology devices can) On the other hand there is a non-Plex 'app' for the Roku that may be a functional replacement?

Got this NAS with 2 4TB drives for home use for storing movies, pictures, etc...Installation of the disks was simple. Setup of the device was a breeze. In less than an hour I was backing up files to the mirrored drives. Nice user interface. It has many more features that I have yet to explore, and so far, this device is a great buy.

This NAS serves my simple purposes well: 1) Personal data storage RAID setup with 2 Western Digital 3TB drives; 2) Music network server.

The DS213j is compact, quiet and cool. The management interface is excellent (although the help files could be better). It's a world of improvement over the clunky D-Link DNS-323 that I've used for the last few years, and MUCH faster. It does way more than I use it for, at least right now.

The only thing that caused me some grief was that the management software originally included transcoding of Apple ALAC music files for streaming to my Sony AV Receiver and Sony Blu-Ray player. I have several thousand files in .m4a ALAC format. A recent "upgrade" to the DSM software removed this ability. An e-mail to Synology was answered after two days, commenting on a possible licensing issue. Support promised to get back to me with a difinitive answer, but never did. I was forced to convert all of my music to FLAC, which my receiver can handle. The BD player can't handle FLAC, but the NAS can transcode FLAC and a couple of other formats.

One other thing is that it usually takes both of my DLNA devices (receiver and BD) 15-20 minutes to find the NAS DLNA server when I turn them on. (The NAS is always on.) I can't tell if that is a Sony issue or a Synology issue. Both devices easily find the DLNA set up on my notebook computer.

Overall, I really like this product.

Very easy to install drives, simply slide in until they 'click'. Setting up the DSM was very east too, all web based.

I installed two 4G WD Red drives that worked perfectly.

Setting up access for iOS devices has been a bit trickier. Have to setup a domain name (synology provides free ones).

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

Comments about Synology DS213J DiskStation 2-Bay NAS Server:

If you are not experienced with NAS, read the manual carefully before you start. It was quick and easy to install the hard drives. During software setup, be sure you plug in on the home side of your router's firewall, otherwise the manual is great.
