Comments about MSI GT70 2OC-059US 17.3" Gaming Notebook Computer (Black):

I use this product everyday to do everything from mixing audio and producing graphic overlays and video with Adobe CS6 to DJing live events. Also good for checking my email and playing video games in my free time. The graphics card along with the i7 processor and large amount of RAM allows even complex projects to be exported quickly. Athleros Killer N Double Shot Networking allows for amazing download and upload times. The video output on this PC allows for matrix display so you can customize your layout in your work areas. This computer also comes with a built in cooling system, sound by Dynaudio with Sound Blaster Cinema and an amazing customizable LED keyboard by Steel Series Keyboards. Also included is software that allows the built in hardware to work together for optimimum performance. I have only had one software issue with this pc that MSI technical support quickly sorted out for me. The only thing that I think this pc lacks is a firewire input. All in all you will not find a computer with this amout of hardware and features for a better price.

Comments about MSI GT70 2OC-059US 17.3" Gaming Notebook Computer (Black):

First the problem, then everything else.

The optical drive and/or PowerDVD 10 has been an ongoing problem. I tested this laptop with CDs DVDs and a few Blurays. I sent video to a larger screen. It all worked - at first. But the optical drive was always SLOW. Slow to notice that it had a disk. SLow to spin up. Slow to figure out what type of disk was loaded. I figured the slowness was due to the combo drive/Win 8/PowerDVD.

Then PowerDVD started to give errors. Blurays no longer work AT ALL. DVDs play - sometimes. CDs work fine. The drive seems even slower. PowerDVD updated itself. No improvement. Trying to play a bluray with PowerDVD freezes and crashes and gives error messages, including the following:
a - This feature is disabled because the connection to the network is currently unavailable. Ensure that you can connect to the Internet if you want to use this feature.
(makes no sense - this message occurs with AND without an internet connection)
b - The integrity of CyberLink PowerDVD is at risk. CHeck your anti-virus software for malicious activities or try reinstalling Cyberlink PowerDVD.
(theres no virus. And there is no way to reinstall Cyberlink - theres no disk and no Reinstall or Repair option in control panel)

MSI has a downloadable "patch" for this issue. Its useless. It DOES NOT FIX ANYTHING.

I spoke with a disinterested tech at MSI. He did not try to find out if it is a software or hardware problem. He was not interested in the error messages. He searched for a solution online, typing and talkign to himself like this "so, the disk is spinning and spinning...." He liked to say "spinning spinning." The guy just seemed bored. He couldnt speak clearly. He had no information. No ideas.

Now I'm supposed to return the optical drive for an exchange. Who knows WHAT will happen now. How much money will this cost? How long will it take? I have no idea.

            Other stuff
The keyboard is sturdy. The arrow keys have been squished in under the Enter Key. That made the Win key extra tiny adn the Shift key too small. But I can type 75wpm on this and thats what counts. And I actually LOVE that the keyboard is illuminated. And adjustable.

            The speakers are clear.

The screen is good. Sharp. Detailed. Fast. This isnt the type of screen you'd want for photo/video editing though - the color and brightness changes too much with angle. This GT70 has lovely and fast graphics.

The wireless has worked well - with absolutely no effort from me.

Laptop runs cool and quiet most of the time. Gaming - thats gonna depend on the game.

I wish the touchpad was more sensitive and more configurable. (There is an update to help with some of that)

The power brick is huge. 3.25 by 1.75 by almost 6.75 inches.

Win 8 is a pain. Get set to work out some glitches because Microsoft didnt bother.

Comments about MSI GT70 2OC-059US 17.3" Gaming Notebook Computer (Black):

I was looking for a replacement of my 2009 Samsung r720ev p7350, which was good laptop, although not pure gaming one.

Well i switched from intel core 2 duo / 4 Gb ram / Radeon HD4650 to this beast. All I can say is WOW ! It's definitely a powerful laptop. Very very powerful.

With the latest 4th generation Haswell i7 processor, 16 Gb of RAM (more than you can ever use in a normal / usual usage), and a Geforce GTX 770M, which is the latest series in Nvidia GPUs, only second to the almighty GTX 780M, you are good to go for anything that requires a powerful computer.

I can play all my game at max details and resolution without a second though, the computer takes them all like a breeze.

I was afraid of the size and weight of the laptop, fearing it would be a little thick and heavy for casual transportation (when i go to visit friends for LAN games. Yes, I still do LANs in 2013, but with a laptop ). Well all i can say is that i was surprised how NOT cumbersome it was. Alright, it's not a Macbook Air, but it's still transportable, and if you don't carry it on a daily basis, it is more than fine (I use it as my primary desktop computer, which I'm able to move sometimes).

Also it's surprisingly quiet, as long as you don't turn on the "super-cooling" fan function. I never really needed it yet, although I haven't played a very heavy game for hours yet.

Display: 1920 x 1080 Full HD Led is very nice, although on a 17" laptop screen , i guess it requires you to have good eyes :)

The only cons for this laptop are:
            - it has no SSD. But there is an additional bay, with SATA ports, so you can definitely add an SSD in addition to the 750Gb HDD. I added a Samsung 840 Pro series (256 Gb) and oh my, the beast's even faster now. I definitely recommend adding an SSD since MSI had the great idea (thanks MSI) to offer a free bay.

            - The battery: well it's a gaming laptop. As Uma says, what did you expect ? Use it as a reader, without wifi / bluetooth and dim screen, it'll last you 5 hours or more, but if you use it fully like a gaming laptop requires... better have AC not far !

            - The keyboard: well for this one you can't do much. Maybe it's because I'm used to the wonderful keyboard of my old Samsung, but I definitely have a hard time getting used to this keyboard. The feeling / touch is OK, but the space between the keys is too narrow, making typing feel too tight. Also I don't understand the placement of some keys. The overall design of the keyboard feels slppy.
