Product Highlights
  • Helps to Eliminate Reflections and Glare
  • Reduces Haze and Blue Cast in Landscapes
  • Greater Color and Tonal Saturation
  • MRC Multi-Resistant Coating
  • Rugged Brass Filter Ring
  • High Quality Schott Glass

The B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Multi-Resistant Coating offers both protection to the glass and helps to improve light transmission and image quality.

I use polarizer filters for almost every outdoor shot, half of my indoor shots, and a notable amount of my studio still-life shots. Why? Because I value crisp light, deep blues and rich greens. With a polarizer, you can just “dial” the clouds into crispness, the water into translucence, and make colors more vivid. Of course, you can get some of this back in post processing, but why not capture more of what you want in the RAW file?

B+W make great filters, and their Circular Polarizer Multi-Coated filter is one of the best I’ve used. For sunny, outside shots I highly recommend the multi-coating, which reduces the artifacts caused by the filter itself. (Remember, since you must rotate the filter, you may find it inconvenient to keep your lens shade on--especially when shooting quickly.) Overcast or indoor shots are less likely to produce such ghosting artifacts.

I’ve found the B+W film coating to be more scratch-resistant than the Hoya filter coatings, so they last longer and can be cleaned with less concern about damage. Though not a “Kaesemann” filter, these filters are tight yet dust and moisture resistant for all non-extreme conditions. I find the B+W Circular Polarizer Multi-Coated filter to provide just the right balance between ease of operation and weather resistance.

For those worried about the 1.3 stop loss, consider the payback: color and contrast over haze and glare. The 1.3 stop of light loss is easily compensated for by using a fast lens and/or increasing the ISO.

One last consideration: I prefer the regular threaded filter to the “Slim” version for most lenses because I leave the polarizer on my lens and prefer the lens caps that “snap-in” to this threaded part, rather than the plastic cover that presses over the “thin” filter. I always lose the press-on covers and don’t have ready replacements. However, at the widest angle on wide angle lenses, you may get vignetting from the regular filter. Then a “thin” filter is best.

The surface stains rather easily and is somewhat difficult to wipe clean. The overall polarizing effect is not as noticeable as I had hoped for compared to other less expensive polarizer filters I have used in the past.

It does feel solid and is a bit heavier than it looks. I'm assuming that it is better constructed than less expensive filters judging solely by its weight.

Major item missing is a small notch making the rotating ring easier to use. It is too easy to touch the front glass while rotating the ring, and wiping the finger print smudges is not easy to do.

I noticed that all of my images have a slight bluish cast to them with this filter attached.

While I checked off that I would recommend this to a friend, I would advise my friend to look for a less expensive filter first, but if he or she wants a slightly better built filter then go for this one.

Comments about B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:

When I bought my lens, a filter pack came with it, however when I received the filters, they just didn't feel as sturdy as the B+W filter I had for my other lens. So I upgraded to what I know and love.

Comments about B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:

I shoot architectural in a high density area. Highlighting features like streets to show off "lifestyle" backdrops can make for busy pictures considering reflective surfaces like store windows and parked cars. This filter is of great quality and moves freely without being loose. The product has good weight and the framing on it is a bit heavier that others that I've used, very impressed.

Comments about B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:

This circular polarizer is the best built one that I have ever used . the polarizing ring is extremely well machined and smooth. The glass is remarkable and has a very low light blockage, unlike many of its competitors. Remember you are using this cp to enhance colors and contrast, and remove reflections, not to darken the image.Easy to install and remove from the lens. Extremely well made. Resist the urge to put a cheap, poorly made peace of glass in front of that lens that you spent a fortune for, you are actually better off with no polarizer than one that is going to degrade your image rather than enhance it. The B+W will certainly improve your photos without any degradation of the image.

This is just a super polarizer. I have used it on water shots, building and landscape shots and the like. It takes the glare out and gives you a beautiful blue sky. Price wise, it was a nice compromise between the most expensive filters and the lower cost ones. You do get what you pay for though. I have used a cheaper brand before and never got the results I get with this very nice B+W filter.

Results are good in both combinations, with Sony EX1 kit lens and Sigma 17-50mm 2.8f lens.
Filter is well built, with solid front and back threads. I combined this filter with Tiffen ND .6 and Formatti ND 1.2 soft edge.
Results are very clear, crisp images with beautiful blue. Even when sky is clear without clouds you'll see significant difference.

Everyone needs a polarizing filter (unless you never shoot outdoors!) This one is good quality and works fine. It seems to darken the image a little more than others I have used, but I recommend this filter.

Just recently got a B&W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter. I live in Florida and we have a problem with our wonderful skies "blowing out". I can now get our beautiful blue skies and white white clouds showing up in my photos in their full glory. It even does a fabulous job with overcast skies and thunderstorm clouds. This filter takes out the green effect one often gets with these clouds when shooting sunsets.Just love it !!

A must for outdoor photography. Dramatic skies..crisp colors...vivid images. Superior glass and constuction compared to the other brands. If you are going to use a filter, you need one that enhances your photos, not detracts.

Comments about B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:

I have been shooting for 50 years, and always reseach what I buy. I recently had to make the switch from film to digital which really hurt and forced me to research my new purchases even harder. The web is a get help.My first thought was just to get the Canon filter since I had a Canon 6D with a EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM AF Lens. Hardly the cheapest, especially as it was 77mm. The idea that their ColorCore Glass might be a top choice was tempered by reviews on single coat, MRC (multi-reflection coating), Kaesemann versus non-Kaesemann, Shott glass versus non-Schott, color tinting effects, rippling, ring metal type. These variables seemed to really confuse, and also depended on how you were going to use it (do you need military grade hardness, working underwater, parachuting out a plane?).A few emails to the B&H sales department got me thinking outside the box I started in. Trade offs for cost, quality (which was actually hard to evaluate except for reports of the ring sticking or the lens cap not fitting). The box I most found myself in was the fact (apparently mostly true) that to use my digital camera's autofocus and light meter I needed circular polarization. Although I do manual focus quite a bit, this seemed an issue not to futz with.I checked what kind of linear polarizer I had on my "old" film cameras: 55mm Pro (Japan) [I think this is Pro Optic now] and 55mm Vivitar. Couldn't tell if they were single or multi-coated. Their "effect" on polarized light is much stronger than circular (even though the circular consists of a linear plus circular) where the overwhelming superior results of the B+W EW KSM C-POL MRC 72 mm filter (labelled circular on the box and filter) turned out to be because it was actually linear!I looked at all the major filter brands (even Canon competitors like Nikon). Curious that Canon provides a 1 year warranty and every one else gives 10 yrs (usually for half the price). The filter factor is about 2.5 for all, so no factor in the decision. Having used Shott glass in my undergrad physics experients I place more weight there. And B+W has a good reputation (hopeful the linear switch above is anomolous). I narrowed it down to 4 filters, and eventually got this filter.I immediately went outside on a sunny day to check several things. Light attenuation: yes with the filter on (in its least effective angle) it blocks 1 1/2 f-stops. Autofocus: camera gets a sharp focus on the same object with and without the filter. Effect: couldn't compare with a linear, or other circulars, but does as expected. See attached photos.

A must have for any landscape photographer. I bought this filter to replace one that I dropped last year. Quality materials, it shows a tiny bit in the corners of my images using my 17-40L at 17MM on full frame.
