Domain Integration

Extensive Support for Active Directory & LDAP
Synology NAS provides extensive support for Active Directory and LDAP to give businesses the flexibility and simplicity they need to manage a complex organization. By joining to the Active Directory or LDAP domain service, end users gain single sign-on to the Synology NAS through their domain account. IT managers can host their own LDAP server and centrally manage access and account control. With the same domain account, end users can also access various DSM services directly.
Joining Active Directory
The Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) from Microsoft provides many advantages in managing a complex network. IT manager can centrally store device names, user names, passwords, and other information in one place, enhance network security, reduce overhead cost and more. When a Synology NAS is joined to an Active Directory, IT managers don't need to create separate accounts and duplicate security information and end users can use single domain account to access the Synology NAS.
Hosting LDAP Server
Synology NAS can act as an independent LDAP server to provide businesses with centralized account and permission management and enhanced security through a simple-to-use management interface. IT managers can use the LDAP server to create domain user accounts and define access rights for shared folders, storage quota and various DSM applications on the Synology NAS. IT managers can also join a Synology NAS to an existing LDAP domain service.
DSM Apps Integration
In addition to accessing shared folders and files in the network, Synology NAS also allows end users to access various DSM services and apps directly with single domain account. For example, IT managers can allow end users to access Cloud Station to sync files across multiple devices or facilitate project collaboration.

Synology High Availability

Ensure Business Continuity
This Synology High Availability solution provides a reliable, simple-to-use failover mechanism to recover from physical and service failures.
Automate system recovery and resume service efficiently
Heartbeat mechanism to detect and respond to system failure timely
Web-based, easy to use management interface
Heartbeat & Failover Protection
The SHA harnesses dual Synology NAS storage servers into a high available cluster. The Heartbeat feature allows a primary and backup server to determine if the other is "alive". When one of the servers experiences service or physical failure, the other will utilize fail over resources ensuring service resumes automatically. Install SHA on your Synology NAS storage servers to minimize service downtime.

    Quiet NAS,

Bought five 3TB WD RED drives for this NAS and after an HD exchange because it came DoA from the factory it all runs fine. Used the SHR 2 mode for dual disk redundancy which you access by the Quick Install menu do not enter custom install for this mode it will then ask SHR 1 or 2. It wasn't explained in the manual so I had to figure it out after trial and error.

After SHR 2 it has 8.4TB of dual redundant storage in case 2 HDs fail. It will give you more piece of mind.

However try to also do other backups outside of the NAS, as like anything it might fail by Murphys law "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong" Hopefully nothing in quite a few years.

I recommend getting the RAM module as the system will run smoother with 4GB. I don't really know if it makes a difference but it should in heavy access situations.

It is very quiet with all 5 disks in there and it has so many options that I cant even scratch the surface. I will use it mainly for local NAS storage not for online hosting which can be set up.

It will even handle a couple of USB drives on the ports for backup.

Still have to set up UPS power management so it shuts down in case of a power failure.

A problem I ran into is that the NAS browser interfece will not load unless I connect the NAS to a router and then access it from there. Direct PC Ethernet to the NAS will not allow configuration. I was expecting easier access that way for simple configuration. Now I have 2 lines on the NAS box so I can have direct transfer from the PC gigabit port and config from the 10/100 router with Internet access.

All in all I think it works fine for the intended use. Be sure to have a spare drive in case of an array failure, you never know. Better safe than sorry. SHR 2 leaves few expansion options other than an external expansion box of drives since changing the configuration would need all drives exchanged in this box with many days of rebuild to do it. So don't expect double redundancy expansion without a NAS expansion box, SHR 1 will be more forgiving.

I returned a myCloud four bay becuase it was slow and did not offer RAID6. the DS1513+ is faster but the myCloud software is lightyears ahead of this mess that comes with the 1513+ I'm running the latest DS Manager 5.0. It is really bad. Duplcate functionality such as the info center and the control panel are two apps that do the exact same thing. You can't send user feedback using the tool that is there. It always says that you've sent too much feedback in the past 30 minutes when I've sent none. Confusing layout with the thing setting up a home folder and a homes folder (yes just addes the letter s) and I'm still not sure why it does that. Cloud Station does not work well and slowly starts eating up terabites of space for no reason at all until you turn it off. I would have rated this lower if not for the fact that the hardware is so good. It is fast and robust. If they made the software as good as WD myCloud they'd have a winner. Or I hope WD fixes the speed and feature set of their hardware. While I know most peole rave about the DS1513+ I have found it a frustrating experience overall.

Comments about Synology DS1513+ DiskStation 5-Bay NAS Server:

In my opinion these are the best NAS servers on the market for home and small business. I have bought some for my home as well as for small business that I help with support. They have a great range of software they give you at no cost. I use mine at home for a media server, my own cloud storage, records all 6 of my ip cameras, pc backup server, ssh tunnel for public networks to keep my data secure and use it to host my domain website. So many options these servers have.

Comments about Synology DS1513+ DiskStation 5-Bay NAS Server:

I'm still in the process of moving items from MY WorldBook to the new storage server. One definitely needs to commit to reading the user manuals and how to's in order to set this up correctly, however, it is well worth it. Synology provides great online how to's which I've already been using successfully. Also, the applications that this offers is incredible. Access to music files is very fast and the fact that it allows access to your server away from home make this fantastic. I will provide update in a few months once I've been using it for a while as there is much I need to set up and use. I'm very excited and happy.

I was able to set it up with help. The only way to contact support is through e-mail and they take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours to respond. I have asked for a call back, and they just ignore it. They say they offer phone support, but there is no number to call. They seem pretty arrogant in their e-mail responses, sometimes not even answering the question I am asking, but what they think I might want to ask. It is very frustrating. If the NAS goes down, they still won't respond for a day, and that is unacceptable. Even if you sell a nice product, you have to support it, and they do not!

So far, this seems to be doing a good job. I replaced another unit from a different company that was sometimes scaring me out of my mind by not mounting properly. This unit has been working consistently. If you are unfamiliar with NAS set ups, it is not entirely a no-brainer to set up, but with a little work finding the manual online (they don't include it with the product), it's straight forward.

Quick and easy to set up, great features, and quite powerful. We use this as a NAS for our office, it delivers fast throughput, is very easily configured, and has tons of useful add-ons. We have had good success with the VPN and security camera applications making the product all around useful.

I currently have 4 drives in the NAS; it's great knowing I have space for one more if/when I need more data. Quick transfer times and solid all around. Very happy with build quality and software on the machine.

Comments about Synology DS1513+ DiskStation 5-Bay NAS Server:

I bought this unit for a friend to use in his printing work. He claims to struggle with "network stuff" but needed a reliable, fast network storage device for multiple Macs in his workgroup.

I think I could have had it up and running in under 5 min, but I let my friend drive since he would have to be the one managing the system day in and day out.

Note that this has not been in service long, so the review is limited to initial install. Although, my friend did say it seemed a lot faster than the "brand-X" unit that we were replacing.

                              Pros:
Simple drive installation without screws! Yay!
Device showed up on the network almost immediately when using the Find Synology URL.
It did not take long to get used to the Web-based User Interface.

                              Cons:
User interface could be confusing for newbies. Multiple windows open on initial startup and can hide each other making it difficult to find the window that you were just working in.

I've got this beast hooked up to my home network to store media files, pc backups, etc. Solid build, smaller than I thought it would be, which is a good thing!Super easy setup. I leave it on 24/7, seems to auto sleep and wakeup whenever I access it through my computer. Runs super quiet too.My only wish is that the box came with a little more documentation. Although, nowadays, it was super easy to find what I needed on the synology website anyway.Right now, I'm just accessing the files via PC. About to setup a Mac as well. Hoping it will work well with both simultaneously. (Hopes are high!!)

Comments about Synology DS1513+ DiskStation 5-Bay NAS Server:

So far I'm satisfied with this product. The setup was easy for the Synology software. There are 3rd party apps that I tried out that were a bit more complicated in terms of setup, but this overall it was pretty easy.

Perfect product for a small to medium sized business looking to for backup and easy to setup file distribution. Several plugins/apps are available for download that can help get more out of this product.

I'm looking to buy a second DS1513+ or the add-on unit for further expansion.

It was really easy to setup and configure this storage. I started using it as a file server for photos and backup server for all family computers.
I tested access speed and found it a bit disappointing over WiFi (10Mb/s) and write speed over Gigabit Ethernet (single link) topped at 100Mb/sec.
It is a solid product. I like that it is expandable and has a lot of apps available.

Replacing a synology 712+ as a home file/media server. When I bought the 712+ a few years ago, the 5 bay version back then was not as quiet. With the 1513+, this is no longer a problem. It runs slightly noisier if you are right next to it but you can't hear anything a few feet away. It runs linux and with SSH enabled, you can log in and setup whatever service you want.

Comments about Synology DS1513+ DiskStation 5-Bay NAS Server:

I'm using this NAS with four 4TB HGST drives. I can't really vouche for reliability since I haven't had it for very long, but set up was a breeze using the Synology guide and once the drives were all loaded and initiated everythings been working great. This was my first NAS Server having come from a WHS2003 computer and I'm looking forward to seeing how well this holds up.

I use Synology DS1513+ to backup my extensive photography files. It picks up the changes so I don't have to worry about missing a backup.

Comments about Synology DS1513+ DiskStation 5-Bay NAS Server:

I switched from a FreeNAS server built out of old parts to this Synology DS1513+ because of the increase in simplicity and the decrease in footprint and energy expenditure. The support and reputation convinced me to try it, and I am extremely glad that I did.

This thing is much faster and far more convenient than my old solution. The only thing I miss is the snapshot feature from FreeNAS's zfs implementation. If Synology can implement a snapshotting system that doesn't require external backups, this will be a perfect device.
