Domain Integration

Extensive Support for Active Directory & LDAP
Synology NAS provides extensive support for Active Directory and LDAP to give businesses the flexibility and simplicity they need to manage a complex organization. By joining to the Active Directory or LDAP domain service, end users gain single sign-on to the Synology NAS through their domain account. IT managers can host their own LDAP server and centrally manage access and account control. With the same domain account, end users can also access various DSM services directly.
Joining Active Directory
The Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) from Microsoft provides many advantages in managing a complex network. IT manager can centrally store device names, user names, passwords, and other information in one place, enhance network security, reduce overhead cost and more. When a Synology NAS is joined to an Active Directory, IT managers don't need to create separate accounts and duplicate security information and end users can use single domain account to access the Synology NAS.
Hosting LDAP Server
Synology NAS can act as an independent LDAP server to provide businesses with centralized account and permission management and enhanced security through a simple-to-use management interface. IT managers can use the LDAP server to create domain user accounts and define access rights for shared folders, storage quota and various DSM applications on the Synology NAS. IT managers can also join a Synology NAS to an existing LDAP domain service.
DSM Apps Integration
In addition to accessing shared folders and files in the network, Synology NAS also allows end users to access various DSM services and apps directly with single domain account. For example, IT managers can allow end users to access Cloud Station to sync files across multiple devices or facilitate project collaboration.

Synology High Availability

Ensure Business Continuity
This Synology High Availability solution provides a reliable, simple-to-use failover mechanism to recover from physical and service failures.
Automate system recovery and resume service efficiently
Heartbeat mechanism to detect and respond to system failure timely
Web-based, easy to use management interface
Heartbeat & Failover Protection
The SHA harnesses dual Synology NAS storage servers into a high available cluster. The Heartbeat feature allows a primary and backup server to determine if the other is "alive". When one of the servers experiences service or physical failure, the other will utilize fail over resources ensuring service resumes automatically. Install SHA on your Synology NAS storage servers to minimize service downtime.

Comments about Synology DS1813+ DiskStation 8-Bay NAS Server:

I've just started to set it up and use it...I've installed eight enterprise-grade 6tb drives which I'll set up as a RAID 6 array. Putting the drives in the trays and putting the trays in the DiskStation was supremely easy. The web-based software install was also easy and went off without a hitch. It was then easy to use the browser-based Synology DiskStation Manager to kick off an extended S.M.A.R.T test of the 8 drives. I'm really happy with the unit so far. I will use it in a mixed environment that includes Macs, Windows PCs, Linux servers and workstations, and a variety of smart phones.

Comments about Synology DS1813+ DiskStation 8-Bay NAS Server:

Only 4 stars because its not yet in production use. After much product research (many vendors) I purchased this for 2 main purposes: 1.) Backup target for muptiple Win7 hosts (using Acronis); 2.) Storage platform for surveillance system (compatible with numerous IP camera vendors).Sell points to me were: Ease of implementation & configuration; performance (reported); capacity; and purchase price. It was installed, configured and visible to my desktop in a matter of minutes. Just a few minutes more and I had network shares mapped for testing. It's not fully installed yet, just been burning in the system, exercising the drives, etc. So far, its done everything I required, worked as expected, and there have been zero issues. Only 5 (of 8) drivs are installed, so plenty of room to grow.Based on experience to date, I'd recommend it, and would buy another if needed.

Comments about Synology DS1813+ DiskStation 8-Bay NAS Server:

This diskstation is extremely usable. The web-based GUI is powerful and responsive, though not always intuitive. Performance of the ATOM processor seems good, with low CPU and memory usage most of the time even with a number of services running. I have not yet been able to benchmark or use multiple LAN connections, but read/write performance seems reasonable so far.

The integrated packages for supporting cloud-based access, file sharing, remote login, VPN, SVN/GIT, and media streaming are extremely easy to set up and use. OpenVPN was ridiculously
easy to configure, since the diskstation exported a .zip file containing all configuration files for the client machine.

I only have a few complaints.

          - Some of the interfaces on the advanced services provided by packages are dumbed-down. I was unable to configure DNS the way I wanted, and there is no easy (supported) access from the unix shell.
          - NFS is fully supported, but user and group ids below 1000 are ignored by the web-based gui. I can work around this because I keep my unix-based users separate from everything else, but it is really stupid and annoying (and apparently has been an ongoing complaint for many years and many versions of the software).
          - Under the hood, its linux. But its a bit stripped-down, and the shell is busybox. Tweaking services or passwords manually (to solve the nfs uid problem) is difficult.

Overall, an excellent value. I bought this to replace my enterprise-class netgear rnd4200, which consumes about 4 times as much power (but has redundant supplies, unlike this synology box) and cost 4 times as much.

I am giving this 4 starts because as a network storage drive it is fine and the quality of the product is good. I'm just posting this review mainly to warn others (who may be like me and not paying close enough attention) that this will not work as a local storage device, which is what we were hoping to use it for. Thanks to the excellent customer service at B & H though, I was able to return with no hassle and they found something that will work.

Comments about Synology DS1813+ DiskStation 8-Bay NAS Server:

I love the Synology, I've been through a few devices in my quest for safe storage, personalized cloud, offsite backup and other side applications. I've tried QNAP, Drobo Pro, File Transporters and finally settled on the Synology. Each of the previous mentioned devices have their merits but in the end the Synology wins hands down when it comes to Price/Performance/Features ratio. You would have to pay twice the price if you wanted a Drobo that can support multiple iSCSI targets. Of course if iSCSI is not important to you, then the Drobo could be fine except that the performance sucks compared to the Synology. With 4 GB ethernet ports, the Synology 1813+ is a screamer. If you're a power Linux user, you may get frustrated with the way in handles some tasks. But one needs to keep in mind it was designed for ease of use and the graphical web user interface is simply amazing. In Summary, I would recommend Synology to anyone. It's a great NAS and also bridges the gap with SMB needs with performant iSCSI. And it has a nice syslog server, great personal cloud, and if you're willing to give some of your space to the cloud, they have an app that gives you back half the size for distributed encrypted cloud backup. A very neat feature.

Used for backup/additional storage/media server. It can be used for a lot more things.

Pretty much everything is great, except some buzzing from the enclosure. I guess 8 7200 RPM drives mounted vertically in a partial plastic housing will do that. If it was not in the same place as my computer, in a closet or other location for example, the buzzing would not be a problem at all.

I chose other for the "computer platform" above because I use multiple but could not choose multiple, and it works for multiple platforms.

Comments about Synology DS1813+ DiskStation 8-Bay NAS Server:

This is by far the best NAS for the amount of money compared to other NAS: there are far better NAS but they are 10 times more expensive.
On a RAID5 with 8 drives of 4 TB you will be able to get 27.5 TB of space. You can expand this NAS to 72 TB by adding 2 other devices, so that's not bad. RAID5 is the best way to assume redundancy without losing too much space (you usually lose 1 drive capacity compared to the number of your drives on a RAID5) but there is also RAID 10 for half the amount of space.
Add an extra 2 gigz of memory if you want to use all the services that come with the NAS, any kind of 2 gigz SO DIMM DDR-2 will do the job.
The interface is 4 NICs and you can do link aggregation if you need more speed. I was able to reach 140,000 Kb/s on this NAS.
It would have been nice to have 2 controllers on this NAS for point of failure instead of a quadnic. The CPU also should be boosted, it's a little too slow I believe.
The graphic interface is nice with the newest DSM 5.x software. Make sure to upgrade the software to 5.0 since B&H might have this NAS with software 3.x only (can't use files bigger than 4 TB on 3.x and can't use 0 byte file characters).
It's very easy to set up the NAS, there is some explanation that comes with it.
There is a mode for silence fan instead of normal use and I haven't found any difference at all.
I just cross my fingers when a hard-drive will fail and will be able to recover free of pain the whole RAID array as fast as possible (a few days maybe?).
Make sure to plug the NAS to a UPS with or without IP address, in case of a failure it is highly possible to lose data or even breaking the virtual disk. Some NAS won't reboot with corrupted or bad blocks on the array without a consistency check.
For the hard-drives that are needed for this NAS I don't really have any good advice, I would say avoid Seagate or Western Digital since their warranty on some models is not so great and since they usually send refurbished hard-drives that keep breaking all the time. Avoid 15K or 10K RPM drives, these drives fail faster than desktop hard-drives. I personally use green hard-drives on this system without problem for the last 2 weeks.
Remember that a RAID is not your BACKUP solution, you have to have a backup handy in case of disaster recovery (tape backup for example).
I received the NAS and the hard-drives in 2 packages shipped by airplane in 2 days, they were wrapped with bubbles inside the boxes and the boxes were not damaged at all. I am glad this all worked out for me, and look forward to buying another NAS in the next few months.

I purchased this unit to act as central storage and backup for the PCs and Macs in my home. It is great as doing that, but is also now acting as my security DVR, TV DVR and so much more. Native IOS and Android apps for sharing media and files with a private "cloud" were unexpected bonuses.

I has other NAS units from Drobo and Buffalo that were poor performers. This unit has 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports and is only limited by Gigabit Ethernet speeds.

This is by far the best NAS system I have owned. it's rich in features and an extreme performer. specially with the 4 LAN interfaces which can be easily combined to give the added bandwidth. The OS and the interface is nicely designed and smooth to operate. The security provisions are excellent. - I have had it for about 2 weeks now and run all combinations of tests on it. It stood true to its specifications. - Just love it

We use this for our church as our backup and storage unit and soon will be our camera surveillance unit. Overall I am good at general tech stuff, but I am not a network specialist by any means. But I was able to get this thing up and running in no time! The interface is easy to use and when you login for the first time it even walks you through some things to get you started.

The transfer speed is awesome! Now that I got our switch setup for the 4 port link aggregation, this thing transfers multiple streams of information FAST! And I went ahead and bought the extra 2GB of Ram since it was pretty cheap. I have never seen my Ram usage go above about 10%! I imagine the extra ram will come in handy once we get the surveillance system going though. The cloud sync is great and allows us to get rid of our third party cloud sync account which helps with our internet not getting bogged down with information constantly being transferred over the internet. Now it's just transferred locally on our network.

iPhone apps work great. Desktop apps work great. Everything works and works well. I'm really impressed with Synology's products and plan on buying one for my own photography business soon.

I've only had this product a week so far, but it continues to impress.

I set this up with four 4TB caviar black drives in raid 5. After transferring some files over I added two additional drives and rebuilt the array. This being my first foray into the world of raid, the incredible ease with which I accomplished all of this should speak to the product's brilliance. I bought this particular product on the strong recommendation of several trusted reviewers, and everything they've said has thus far proven true. The hardware is solid and easy to trust, the software is intuitive and thorough, and the performance is outstanding.

It's costly, but if you're looking for reliable expandable raid storage, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this product.

This is a phenomenal product. Terabytes of fault-tolerant data storage combined with a DLNA server for music, photo and video...and lots of other server-based useful apps...like being able to sync your PC and tablet data back to this NAS.

I use this unit to host my website (yes, it runs mysql and php) as well as all the data related to my small business.

I bought a second unit, which I now keep off-site...which is automatically synchronized nightly...just so I'll never ever lose any data. While it may seem like an expensive solution, it pays for itself in under a few months as compared to unsecured 'cloud' storage for the same amount of data.

What I like best is the ability to manage my servers remotely without having to open up every port on my router as well as it's integration to my desktop...very very convenient.

Comments about Synology DS1813+ DiskStation 8-Bay NAS Server:

I have owned a DS211 for about three years and it has been the most reliable piece of hardware I've ever owned (I've been in IT since 1959). As my requirements increased over time, this DS1813+ was a natural next step. I use the NAS to store a large block of personal data and the "backup" (ATIH) images of five separate workstations. The gigabyte Ethernet and bare bones Linux OS mean that this device is not a bottleneck in the pursuit of my normal operations. The browser interface to the NAS is relatively easy to learn, my only regret is that I can't capture relevant data (like the S.M.A.R.T disk data) in digital format, but being able to capture this and other base data is a boon to managing any storage resource. I don't use many of them, but the availability of various software extensions like a POP3 e-mail server, et al is staggering. The product support people are very responsive, but I wish they had a better documentation on how a Windows oriented tech could use access to the Linux server especially with respect to dealing with the management of UPS devices.

Comments about Synology DS1813+ DiskStation 8-Bay NAS Server:

I purchased 2 DS1813+ units as backups for my Linux home server. I bought them for storage primarily, that's what I set up first. Getting the disk in was a breeze. The drives trays have snap-ins rather than screws and I suppose one could complain they are molded plastic but I put 8 drives in each unit without a problem. The units support hot-swapping and should that be necessary, it would only take a few seconds to swap a drive. As both units were new and I had disk all the same size, I created a single RAID 6 partition, but it's important to note that these units support multiple RAID levels including hybrid-raid, the last of which allows one to start with smaller disks and upgrade over time. There's a slight loss of performance, but it does allow one to upgrade piecemeal while still taking advantage of redundant storage. I then added the unit to my gigabit network and ran some tests from my home server and was able to get 110 MB/s throughput, something I consider outstanding real world performance given that my home server is consumer grade hardware..
There is a whole lot more to these boxes than just the storage though. Synology has a suite of tools that can be downloaded free to turn your NAS into a backup server, web server, security camera server, DLNA server … the list goes on and on. I realize of course, the DS1813+ is just another Linux server underneath, however, a lot of the packages are customized by Synology to make them easier for the average user while putting the whole thing in smaller package and footprint . The java -based, desktop like interface brings them all together to make them easier to use, but a command line is also available if your prefer to do things by hand. Hubris has made me always keep Linux servers around for various reasons, but although I haven't started yet, it's clear the functions of these NAS units could eliminate most of the need for that. Okay, I may still need them for encoding but not much else. I can always do dev on my laptop
