Comments about AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 1080p Game Recorder:

I've got only a little to complain about with this device. It works well as a standalone or combo streaming/recording device connected to my computers. But, there are a few annoying factors that keep me from giving five stars. For one, it simply won't record some HDMI signals, namely those that have HDCP signals, such as those coming from a gaming device or even from a Macbook Pro. This renders the device less than reliable in a professional setting, where you might be looking for more of a "Swiss Army knife" solution that can be applied without much concern at a moment's notice. Buyer beware - if you need to count on this thing, you might want to also look into an intermediate device that strips HDCP.Also, as other reviewers have mentioned, the included neoprene case would be a lot handier if it had some extra space for cables. Maybe they could have thrown in a similar bag for the included cables. That would be a nice touch, and one I'd be willing to fork over another $ to cover in this affordable product. Also, the Mac software leaves me wanting more. The PC version is more robust. They could also offer more informative video tutorials on their site about interconnections and use scenarios. They have quite a few, but they are super short, and do not contain anything but basic connections.

Comments about AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 1080p Game Recorder:

1080 picture quality is very good. I love that the voice on mic is saved as a separate mp3 file on pc mode. The HDMI cable included in the box is a little too short for my setup. It is about 15 inchs (40 cm). The protective bag is just fit to the body. As no space for cables, I feel it is almost useless.

BTW, when you see black border aroud the captured image on PC mode, you need to open nVidia control panel and disable under-scan settings, or open ATI/AMD Catalyst control panel and adjust scaling option to 0%.

              Very good product.

Comments about AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 1080p Game Recorder:

This is the only game recorder I've ever had so I can't compare it's performance to others. The Live Gamer Portable's (LGP) compact size, advertised PC free recording and usage of sdhc cards for storage is what sold me to get this recorder over the others. As a pro videographer I have so many sdhc cards laying around it's really convenient that the LGP will be able to use them.
Set up is easy. Not quite plug and play tho. You have to connect LGP to your computer then go to Avermedia's webpage to manually install all the drivers and firmware. It only takes a few minutes. RECentral is now on your computer. Connect your PS3 to the Live Gamer portable then Click on the new RECentral icon on your desktop. Once you see your PS3 screen in RECentral you're ready to go.
The RECentral software is disappointing. It's only good for adjusting pre-recording settings (resolution, bitrate, fps, color etc). You cant use RECentral to edit a recorded video. This is the reason I took 1 star off this rating. Also, this included hdmi cable is really short. I couldn't use it on my wall mounted TV without the LPG looking ridiculous dangling in the air. Fortunenatly I had longer spare 6ft cable that works well and looks much better on my setup. I repeat you DO NOT have to use their shrimpy hdmi cable to get this unit working. Any longer hdmi cable will work.
Overall I'm very very happy with my purchase. I've only had the LGP for 10 days but have recorded many online fight games and wrestling matches from my PS3 with 0 issues at all. Fortunately PC free recording quality look awesome enough for me to avoid the hassle of using my PC for recordings.

                NOTE:
It's worth noting that with this or any PS3 component cable you can only go up to 720p recording resolution. For those that want 1080p you would need to connect the PS3 via hdmi

Comments about AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 1080p Game Recorder:

First, if you hope to use this device to stream with OBS and you use a laptop, PLEASE make sure your graphics isn't integrated (Intel HD Whatever) and that it *is* dedicated (ATI Radeon or nVidia). Otherwise, you're gonna find yourself making more backdoors and workarounds just to stream.I bought this device with ease at B&H and the first thing I did was use the PC-Free Mode on my SDHC SD card. The quality is amazing, and even though PC-Free mode from other reviewers stated the quality is noticeably lower due to the 16mbps, I didn't notice anything damaging. Yeah, I noticed artifacts, but not something that ruined the video. On PC, recording ACTUALLY does 60fps! I was very thoroughly impressed. The first thing I did was upgrade the firmware, so try to follow that before jumping into your device. I read reviews and tried to be very aware of the possibility of this thing working for a week and them malfunction. I did not encounter that since I upgraded first and made sure not to fool around too much to risk a faulty hardware.Overall, I will give this 5 stars because it's really great for Laptop users. People develop software to use this for streaming programs, so do a bit of research and get informed, because this product is really good once you use it.My only complaints are limited to my laptop, where the program lags and becomes unstable. But that's because my laptop cannot support DirectX10.
