Product Highlights
  • Simultaneous Dual-Band 802.11ac Wi-Fi
  • 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi Compatible
  • WPA/WPA2 Encryption, NAT Firewall
  • 1 x USB 2.0 Port
  • 3 x Gigabit Ethernet LAN Ports
  • 1 x Gigabit Ethernet WAN Port
  • Built-In Power Supply

The sixth generation Airport Extreme Base Station from Apple features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi support. That means it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time. So no matter which band your wireless devices use, they'll automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance.

With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the Airport Extreme Base Station can reach data rates of up to 1.3Gbps, which is triple the 802.11n standard. 802.11ac Wi-Fi also provides double the channel bandwidth with 80MHz-wide channels providing more room for data to flow faster. If you're using a 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi device, Airport Extreme can still optimize the connection for those Wi-Fi standards as well.

Apple has redesigned the Airport Extreme to be taller with antennas located at the top of the device. Apple also increased the number of antennas to six, three for 2.4GHz and three for 5GHz. The vertical redesign of the AirPort Extreme also contributes to a smaller footprint and more desk space.

With AirPort Extreme, getting your new Wi‑Fi network up and running is quick and easy. That's because a setup assistant is built into iOS and into AirPort Utility for OS X. As soon as you plug in your AirPort Extreme and connect it to your DSL or cable modem, you can follow the simple instructions on your Mac or iOS device. There are no complicated steps to follow and no obscure terminology to learn. The setup assistant does all the work, so you don't have to.

Up to Three Times Faster Wi-Fi

802.11ac - The Definition of Fast
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the AirPort Extreme Base Station takes Wi‑Fi speeds up to 1.3 Gbps, which is triple the previous 802.11n standard. This means up to three times faster Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80MHz‑wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. And if you have 802.11a/b/g/n devices, AirPort Extreme maximizes those connections as well
Simultaneous Dual-Band Support
AirPort Extreme features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi‑Fi. That means it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time. So no matter which band your wireless devices use, they'll automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance
Beamforming Puts the Focus on Your Device
With 802.11ac technology comes the intelligent, powerful beamforming antenna array. Most base station antennas emit an equal and constant Wi‑Fi signal in all directions. But the beamforming antenna array knows where an 802.11ac device is on the network. Then AirPort Extreme targets its signal to that device. So your Wi‑Fi signal is stronger, clearer and faster

Designed with Performance in Mind

A Top-Down Approach to Design
For the redesign of AirPort Extreme, Apple took an approach that centered around performance. Apple made it taller and put the antennas at the top, creating a higher platform for dispersing the signal. Apple also increased the number of antennas. There are now six of them - three for the 2.4GHz band and three for the 5GHz band. Together with 802.11ac wireless technology, they let you connect faster, farther and with more power than its predecessor
Smaller Footprint with More Desk Space
The vertical design not only improves Wi‑Fi performance, it also saves you valuable desk space. At less than 4 inches square, the footprint of AirPort Extreme is 64 percent smaller than its predecessor. And to save even more space, the power supply is built in

AirPort Utility

Manage Your Wi-Fi Network from an iOS Device or Mac
Once your network is set up, AirPort Utility for iOS and OS X lets you manage and monitor it from your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Mac. Your AirPort Extreme, along with other AirPort base stations you have connected, appears graphically onscreen, so you can see all your settings to make changes, apply updates and more

Printer and Hard Drive Sharing

Simple and Secure File Sharing
AirPort Extreme can turn your external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi‑Fi network and access securely over the Internet. All the documents, videos, photos, and other files instantly become available to anyone on the network, Mac and PC users alike. It's perfect for file sharing, collaborative projects and more
Print Without Wires
The USB 2.0 port in AirPort Extreme is also great for sharing a printer across your wireless network. Just plug it in and everyone on your network can take advantage of one centrally available printer wirelessly

Compatibility and Security

Get Online Safely and Securely
AirPort Extreme includes a built-in firewall that creates a barrier between your network and the Internet, protecting your data from malicious attacks. When you set up AirPort Extreme, the firewall is automatically turned on
Guests for Your Wi-Fi Network
With the guest networking feature, you can set up a separate Wi‑Fi network just for guests. Use a different password or no password at all. A guest network allows access only to the Internet, so your primary network - including any external hard drive, printer, or other LAN-attached device - remains secure
Connect to Wi-Fi From Any Device
Whether you have a Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, you'll be able to connect to the AirPort Extreme. Any Wi‑Fi‑enabled device you have will work with AirPort Extreme. That's because it's compatible with devices using the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11ac specifications
Go Wired
If you're looking for reliable Internet access, you can also go for a wired connection. The AirPort Extreme includes three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for fast wired connectivity with a desktop computer, network drive, DVR or other wired devices

It's been five years since I changed my wireless router, during that time, my family has added more Apple products than any other brand. This router was easy to set up through my iPad, but almost immediately, my children, wife and I noticed that the reception was weaker -- not stronger -- in most parts of our house. For the first time ever, our iPads and Mac lost their Internet connection in the kitchen. I restored the five-year-old Linksys WRT400N and regained a strong signal. Not sure why the older Linksys model is outperforming the latest Apple Airport Extreme. I returned the new router to B&H, which processed the refund quickly and efficiently.

Comments about Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (6th Generation):

It's used on a home network and replaces a Linksys Wireless-G (which was a solid router), so for me it's a noticeable improvement in signal strength at longer ranges. Extremely easy to set-up using the Airport Utility and very easy to get everything up on the network.

Comments about Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (6th Generation):

The new Extreme replaced an old DIR-655 which was a pretty decent router for the last 5 years.

Setup was very easy using the IPad and Airport Utility, but did require a reboot of the IPad to complete the setup and get the firmware updates on the Extreme.

We also have a Macbook Pro, Android tablet and a Windows PC. All of them connected up to the Extreme easily with no issues.

Using a couple of different software programs, I was able to verify that range and signal strength is slightly better than the DIR-655 on the Windows PC and Android tablet (both have 820.11n network cards using the 2.4 GHz). On the Macbook and the IPad Air using the 5GHz 820.11ac connection, the range and signal strenght is also better.

Speed is fine. We only have a 15 Mbps connect speed, so any decent new router can achieve that.

I've had the router for around one month now, and have not had any disconnects.

Only a few things can be "tweaked" on the router. So, if you are someone who likes to mess with settings or needs a lot of specialized settings, this may not be your best choice.

All in all, I'm pleased with the purchase. If the router gives me the same longevity as the old DIR-655, I'll be very pleased.

Comments about Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (6th Generation):

This 6th gen Airport Extreme is the finest home/small business router I've used. The range is far superior to other brands and older Airports, both the Extreme and Express, even when daisy chaining multiple devices to join the existing network. I've used the older Extreme, which this 6th gen easily surpasses. With the added frequency and range of the 6th gen Extreme, many home users can eliminate the use of multiple routers and bridging. We were replacing a home office Express that delivered and performed perfectly fine, bridged to another Express in the family room for Apple TV, gaming and Netflix streaming. This Extreme has a better antenna and more powerful frequency range than any Express, so we eliminated the bridge and now get super fast wi-fi throughout the house. Plug 'n' play set up; Airport Utility did all the heavy lifting, with no need to fiddle with the attached existing broadband modem. We do not use the USB, which would likely slow performance, understandably.

Apple products are definitely on the expensive end of things but I believe you truly get what you pay for when it comes to their products. I replaced a 1 yr old Linksys EA3500 N750 Dual Band Wireless N Router with the Airport Extreme and can say the range of my network is much broader and stronger throughout the house.

Granted I use all apple products but don't think this has anything to do with it. The airport extreme is built well, looks good and is easy to set up and configure.

I use this in coordination with an Airport Express and an older Airport Extreme as a bridge. This new base station has great range!

I carefully researched what product to buy when I realized I needed a router. I have always had MAC computers and it was only logical that the router that looked best in reviews for my computer was an Apple product.

I thought my cable was so slow but when I switch from Time Capsule to this, my internet speed went from crawl to lightning speed!!! My Time Capsule is kinda old anyway. I don't know if it's the design or the chips inside it but it works! Wherever I'm at the house, internet speed stayed lighting fast. I'm glad I made this upgrade.

Point of view: I cut the cord and only stream. My old router dropped the connection, so we could never get through a movie without it stalling. Since I bought this, streaming has been perfect. Also, the AC wifi is very fast if you have an AC device.

I replaced a previous version airport extreme with the new, 6th generation base station. I have 2 airport express units used to extend the wifi signal. Without replacing the express units, I have seen a 20% increse in wifi signal strength. I don't have any 802.11ac gear but I am still happy with the upgrade. The stronger signal at a farther distance is great.

I use it as a replacement for my gen2 Airport Extreme. It is being used in the Dual-band mode, both bands at once for best interference mitigation.

What I love most is the Time Machine support. I don't need it for myself, but my wife's laptop is difficult to get -- always in use. So, wireless backup via Time Machine. It spins-down the drive when it's not in use.

It's sleek and elegant, as well.

It has a USB 2.0 port for a shared drive. It will handle a bus-powered 2.5" drive. Would've been nicer if it were 3.0.
