As it seems in the reviews here, many people find this laptop to be the only one that fills all of their needs. It's the same for me. I wanted a laptop that had a great screen with touch, solid build quality, good speakers, powerful processor, discrete graphics, and decent battery life. Well, this one fulfills most of those.Build Quality:The N550JV certainly looks good, and it's made of nice materials. The aluminum gives it a nice feel, and the lid looks/feels good as well. However, the fit isn't quite perfect. The touchpad is uneven and doesn't sit flush. It works fine, but it's annoying to look at. The screen hinge also creaks whenever I move it up or down, and this I find to be incredibly annoying, but I guess I can live with it. Other than that I find the build quality to be quite good.Keyboard and Touchpad:I was worried I wouldn't like the keyboard, but I actually find it to be pretty good. The action on the keys is positive and they have a nice amount of travel. The backlighting does bleed some, but I don't really ever find the need to use it anyway. It's nice to have, though. The touchpad works well, and it is accurate, though it seems to have a little more resistance than I'd like (though it might be the humidity here).Size and Weight:I was actually surprised by the weight of the machine. I've read some reviews saying it's heavy, but it feels relatively light for its size if you ask me. That may just be because my older laptop was heavier, but I find the thickness and weight to be quite satisfactory on this machine. It tapers up on the bottom, and this helps create a feeling of thinness. It's even more impressive once you consider the fact that this computer has a touch screen, CD drive, dedicated graphics, a keyboard with nice travel, and a decent amount of ports.Performance:The laptop obviously has a pretty powerful processor, although I haven't been able to really test it out yet. I did convert some songs, and I was amazed by how fast it went. It was converting 8 songs at one time. It seems to handle games pretty well. I've played BF3 quite a bit, and it looks really nice and plays well at Full HD. The hard drive is of course the major bottleneck, and it makes itself known. Booting up and loading programs takes so much longer with an HDD versus an SSD, especially a 5400 RPM one, but I can deal with it for the time being. I'm waiting until an SSD around 1 TB comes down in price (currently about $550 at the cheapest). The wireless card kind of sucks. I get about 2 or 3 bars from my room where as with my old Asus I'd get 5. Luckily it's cheap and easy to upgrade.Screen:The screen is excellent. This was one of the major reasons I wanted this laptop. It's of course 1920x1080, and it has excellent black levels, and colors look great on it. The touch is extremely responsive, though I don't use it too often. It's incredible the difference between the screen on this and my 4 year old Asus N51Vf with a 1366x768 screen, and not just the resolution. The screen may just be the best thing about this laptop.Speakers:There are four down firing speakers in the front of the laptop, along with the external sub. The sound quality is a mixed bag. They seem to work quite well for simpler, less noisy music, but when it comes to louder rock and such they aren't so great. At least part of it is because they are underneath the front of the laptop, and this doesn't work to its advantage. The speakers are even worse when you have them on your lap. That being said, they are much better than my old laptop's speakers, and they're perfectly adequate. I just wish they were even better, especially since Asus touts them as if they are the best laptop speakers in the world. But it's okay, I prefer listening through some quality headphones anyway. The speakers on the laptop do get loud without too much distortion, and they work really well while watching TV shows and what not where it's mainly just people speaking.Battery Life:This is one of the more disappointing aspects of the laptop. Maybe I'm just expecting too much, but seeing as Haswell (the 4th gen Intel procs) brought such an improvement in battery to other laptops, I'm surprised this laptop only gets around 4 hours at best with light use. I guess it's just the fact that the processor is such a powerhouse compared to the majority of laptops, and with this you don't get such great battery life. I also feel like Asus probably didn't put a very large battery in the laptop, and unfortunately you can't put in anything bigger since it's on the inside. At least you can change it when it goes bad. (As a side note, if you want your battery to last for more charges, set the computer to turn off at 15 or 20% battery left instead of the default which I think is 5%. LiPos don't really like being discharged that much.)So that's about all I have to say about the laptop. Make sure you update the BIOS and any other drivers that have updates from Asus. I'll add more if anything else comes up. I had a hard time deciding whether to give the laptop a 4 or 5. If the two build quality issues that I have weren't present it'd be a definite 5. You may not even have those in yours, who knows. I was also considering the Samsung Ativ Book 8, but they still haven't come out with a Haswell version yet. That computer also doesn't have an optical disc drive like this one does, and it's kind of important to me even if I could always just buy an external one with the other laptop.

I'm not a techie so consider my comments with that in mind. This Asus replaced an 8 yo Toshiba Satellite. I use mostly Excell and Word. I got this Asus to try video editing.

The monitor provides a good picture. The sound is OK but not as good as the company hype. It is difficult to separate the Asus product from the Windows 8 OS. But my old Toshiba loaded Excell faster. The keyboard pad on the Asus seems difficult - sometimes the same touch at the same place works and sometimes it doesn't. Two weeks after purchasing the Asus a message popped up on the screen that "an audio device has been unplugged". I've never had an audio device (a few days ago I plugged in an HDMI cable and then removed it) but at the time of the message nothing had been plugged in. This may not seem like a big deal but I'm an avid reader of Consumer Reports and Asus has the worst rating for repairs of all laptops. So I hope this isn't the beginning of some trend. The touch screen works but it's old technology. It's loaded with "Apps" but they just seem to slow the machine down. It doesn't seem to be that much better than my old Toshiba - and an 8 year old device in the tech world should be considered ancient. It doesn't seem intuitive or very user friendly. And why doesn't Windows put a "Shut Down" button on the desktop? I feel like an old fart (I'm 62) but that's it.

Comments about ASUS N550JV-DB72T 15.6" Multi-Touch Notebook Computer (Gray):

Uso el producto para el trabajo y para el entretenimiento, su capacidad es muy importante, este laptop cumple con creces el uso que le aplico. Tiene una gran nitidez en su pantalla, el teclado es cómodo, su funcionalidad y rapidez es excelente, pasé de Vaio a Asus y no tuve ningún inconveniente. Lo único que no vale la pena es el subwoofer que viene con la laptop, no es para nada impresionante, con mis bafles JBL que tenía funciona mejor.

I use it for everything from work related (office apps) to watching videos on the road. It is a little heavier than I would like for traveling. Setup was easy, I updated to 8.1 once I received it but failed to realize that Asus does not have all the drivers for 8.1. Driver update ended up being trial & error; Asus tech support was worthless, they couldn't tell me anything more than I already new by reading off the web. After the update the Asus Install wizard does not work, seems to be a non-issue, the Asus tech folks could not even tell me what it is for. Overall good computer, 4 stars because of 8.1 updating issues and lack of even half-a ** support from Asus.

Daily office use. Everything works great, e.g. excellent HD-Touchscreen,very fast processor, illuminated keyboard is perfect, etc. pp.. Just a note: I've updated from Windows 8 to windows 8.1 with the first start. It took a while. If you update to 8.1, it's important to update Bluetooth and some other drivers, if you want the system running. Took a while to find it out. Missed a hint on Asus support site. Annoying issue, but can be resolved with a little patience.

Runs well, good specs, does just about everything asked of it - specifically, tasks like PPT presentation, basic graphics work, and I'm sure it could handle a good bit of video editing if I tried. For performance, this system is great.

However, I must say that the keyboard on this is making me second-guess the purchase. The numeric keypad is a very nice feature, but the implementation makes me wonder if it's better left off. It's not separated at all from the main keyboard - and the arrow keys are wedged underneath and in between. The touchpad is off-center from the main text-entry part of the keyboard. As a result, I reach for a key, type it incorrectly, or just find myself looking at the keyboard for everything. There's almost no good tactile indicator that you're putting your fingers where they should be. Awkward, definitely not ideal.

That said, in sum, it works well.

Great laptop, excellent IPS 1080 screen for wide angle viewing, 8 GB memory built in is good start. I still might upgrade to 16 GB for the heck of it since I have read it can handle that much. The I7 cpu performance is a bit overkill for a device mostly used for web browsing but I bought this level so it could deal with possibly running some virtual machines for a lab now and then and also it will not become outdated for many years hopefully. The 5400 RPM hard drive is pretty slow but I was able to get the tiny screws off to open up the bottom of the laptop (with the smallest torx bit) to swap in a much faster Samsung SSD. Word of caution if you go that route, once the screws are removed, the bottom panel was stuck by the hinge area in back. you have to pull the bottom panel up (away from the table with the asus emblem on the display facing down) since the bottom cover is pressure fit with the CPU heatsink by the back hinge.

I would take off a half star for the sharp edges of the sheet metal case but for a device with hardware performance probably over 80% of a MacBook pro 15 at less than half the price decided to keep it 5 stars. Also, I bought this for portable around the house use now and then when not using the work laptop or using my phone as a web device. It might not fare as well in being a road warrior machine as a MacBook or corporate model laptop with lessor display and or performance.

Windows 8 is a little annoying at first then once I found the quick ways to get to the desktop and get to the other basic windows command like run it isn't too bad or because I work in I.T. I've just gotten used to how it works and deal with it.

Comments about ASUS N550JV-DB72T 15.6" Multi-Touch Notebook Computer (Gray):

This was a great product. Very slim and the screen is gorgeous. Windows 8.1 works much better than windows 8 and so far i have no complaints. The only thing preventing me from giving this a 5/5 is that the DVD/Blu Ray player face has a broken clip. I emailed ASUS for a replacement face but they said I would have to RMA the whole laptop. I bought this for my school work and personal work and I have no other computer options at this time and cannot wait for a RMA process. I emailed Asus asking if I can just RMA the blu-ray player but its been a week with no reply. For now, I can live with it but its an inconvenience for a product that I spent a good amount of money on.

Using for average stuff right now, surfing, word processing, spreadsheets. Powerful enough for significant game play. Changed out the HD to an SSD and the machine flies. Using a Crucial Technologies SSD, transferred the HD data using the EZGIG software and entire contents moved over without a hitch. Machine booted up on the first try.

Have updated to Windows 8.1, no problems so far.

I think this laptop is a great value. I use this laptop for general use as well as graphics intense games. Based on other reviews that I read I ordered a Samsung 500 gig SSD to replace hard drive it came with. Didn't do before and after benchmarks but boot times dropped from about 35 seconds to less than 10. The SSD upgrade makes this laptop really zip. I also replaced the wifi card with an Intel N-6235. Download speeds went from 2 mbs to 16. I like the aluminum case and the feel of the keyboard. I thought that the back-lit keyboard would be cool but in a lit room there is not enough contrast between the silver keys and the lit key symbols. In a dark room the symbols show up better. Black keys or maybe red back lighting might have been better. I just turn back light off when in a lit room. No regrets on this purchase.

I recently purchased this one and this laptop has exceeded all my expectations.
After I placed the order, the price of this laptop has been reduced. I contacted the B&H customer service and they refunded the reduced price right away. Hats off to the B&H customer service.

                                        The touch screen is excellent.
                                        The design is very professional.
The weight of the notebook is ok.
Overall I like this product and I would recommend this to my friend.

This is my first Asus. Out of the box I was impressed with the quality of how it was packed and the feel of the computer (Al case).

The IPS screen is beautiful but being a touch screen it is very glossy; consequently it is relatively easy to see reflections of your surroundings including your own face (which could be positive depending on your face). The screen did have a small 1/8 inch scratch in the lower left corner that can only be seen with a white background. I decided it was not worth the trouble to exchange it since I have too look to find defect.

The keyboard lettering is a weak point. Silver keys on a silver case with light gray lettering. Depending on the lighting the key letters are practically invisible. You can change the illumination but depending on the ambient light that can make it worse.

It comes with windows 8. After spending a few hours updating the software, the upgrade to 8.1 went flawlessly. I then paid to upgrade to Pro to get Media Center. There was a problem getting Media Center to play sound through the HDMI port, but downloading new sound drivers from Asus fixed that; now Media Center is working fine.

It comes with a small table subwoofer that actually sounds quite good (for a laptop).

The only game I have tried to date is Civilization V which it handles quite well.

Overall I'm pleased with the my purchase.

Laptop is really nice and as advertised; Fits perfectly for my needs of 3d modeling and design. But for some reason, the touchscreen feature intermittently stops working. A simple repair of the hardware in the troubleshooting section fixes it, but definitely concerning issue.

Good memory and big screen. The laptop looks beautiful. The only drawback is the regular hard drive. if the laptop had been installed with a SSD it would have been a great deal. I would recommend this laptop.
