The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Sony Alpha is a wide-angle to normal-length zoom lens that features a fast, bright constant f/1.8 maximum aperture. It is specifically designed for use with APS-C-sized sensors and provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-52.5mm.

The lens integrates four aspherical elements into its construction as well as five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements to help minimize various aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range as well as provide greater image sharpness and clarity. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting to produce images with higher contrast and color fidelity. The lens barrel design is constructed from a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material that is akin to metal in texture and resistance to temperature and environmental changes while also remaining lightweight and compact. An internal focusing and zooming mechanism also helps to maintain a compact and consistent overall length and non-rotating front ring also better enables the use of circular polarizing filters. For control of focus, a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) is used to ensure fast, precise, and quiet focusing capabilities that are well suited to continuous shooting and movie recording.

Art Lens Line
This lens is part of Sigma's Art line; deeming it well-suited to creative image making due to its large, constant f/1.8 maximum aperture and ability to produce aesthetic bokeh by way of a nine-blade circular diaphragm. The range of focal lengths it covers, from wide-angle to normal-length, is nicely situated for everyday and artistic shooting applications.
Optimized Lens Design
Four aspherical lens elements, as well as the incorporation of five SLD glass elements, help to minimize the appearance of distortions and aberrations throughout the zoom range and provide clear imagery with enhanced sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating also benefits the image quality by reducing reflections and flare and contributing to greater overall contrast and fidelity.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The Hyper Sonic Motor provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications. This AF motor can also be manually overridden at any time by rotating the focusing ring, giving you the ability to fine-tune image sharpness through manual focusing.
Other Lens Features
  • Constructed using a TSC compound material, this lens is lightweight while also exhibiting notable durability and resistance to environmental changes.
  • An internal focusing and zooming mechanism helps to maintain a consistent overall lens length and a non-rotating front ring facilitates more efficient use of circular polarizers.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

What a lens, I'm using on my Sony FS100 which is already superior for low light video and with this attached it is a true game changer. This lens really got me back on board with third party lenses, owned Sigma lenses in the past and the performance was always good but never this good and the fact that no one else offers a zoom lens of this speed is truly unprecedented. I don't have a single complaint about this lens other than not being available in e mount. I really look forward to trying it out on a Sony A77ii which this lens makes me want to buy. In camera stabilization with a f/1.8 zoom lens? Yes please.

I purchased this product to be used with my Sony NEX - EA50UH for video work. It's been perfect the quality of the product is great with great focus and the smooth zoom is nice for weddings. The f1.8 is awesome for all my reception footage with low light. Overall I really like this lens.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

First off, it felt like a long wait getting this lens. It took one year from the day I pre-ordered the lens until the day it finally shipped. But it was worth it. This is certainly one of my favorite lenses to use as a daily walk around and is on my camera most of the time.

Many will describe this lens as less of a zoom and more of a multiple prime lenses in one, especially due to its "odd" focal range for a crop sensor. But when you figure in Full Frame equivalent focal lengths, it covers the focal length of popular primes such as 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm, then it doesn't seem as odd. Truly, that is probably the best description for this. The image quality this lens produces is so good, even at wide open, I decided to get rid of my primes that overlapped its range.

Build quality of the lens is very nice and solid. It definitely exudes confidence. While it isn't weather sealed, it helps that the lens is internal focusing and internal zooming. This should help reduce the likelihood of dust or moisture making its way into the lens. It's got some heft, but isn't too heavy. I am not huge fan of the ridged bottom between the focus and zoom rings, but that is just personal preference. I have on more than one occasion mistook it for one of the focus/zoom rings only to find I was gripping the wrong section. But it isn't a big deal.

The lens through most of its focal length range is very sharp with good contrast and resolution from F/1.8 through F/5.6. I'm using this on a 24MP A77II and it pulls in quite a bit of detail with that camera. When shooting up close and with good background separation, and luckily you can get pretty close with this lens, you can get some really nice bokeh.

Focusing speed is adequate, but it won't be breaking any speed records. If having to focus from rack to rack, it may seem slow, mainly because it seems to make quite a few turns from around 2 feet to its closest focusing point. But so long as your subject is constantly around 2 feet or further out the focusing speed is decent and it is pretty quick if it doesn't have to move too much through its focusing range. Seems to do a decent job tracking too.

With it using HSM, it is pretty quiet focusing. This makes it a decent lens to use if you plan to shoot video.

If I have one complaint, it would have to be its focusing accuracy out of the box for subjects that require it to focus to infinity. Out of the box, mine had a strong back focus when attempting to lock on to subject at infinity. Luckily, this is fairly easy to correct with the use of the Sigma USB Dock. I strongly encourage anyone buying this lens or any of Sigma's other Global lenses to invest in the USB Dock. It's a small investment that is worth every penny. It'll allow you to fine tune the lens' focus accuracy among other things. Plus, it allows you to update the firmware of the lens if Sigma releases updates without having to send the lens back in to them.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

This seems almost too good to be true, but it performs very well indeed. I use this on a Sony A77II body. AF is smooth and very quiet and quite fast (I'm used to Canon and Nikon fast glass). Build quality is excellent and the weight makes me feel good about the lens, not worse as some complain about. The lens is plenty sharp but lacks a little contrast but thanks to post processing software like LR, it's no big deal to crank that in after your shoot. It becomes a 27-52.5mm f/1.8 lens on an APS-C crop sensor body (7DII, A77II, D7100). I shoot this for both stills and video and almost always wide open. It blows backgrounds out nicely, simplifies the look of my images, and overall performs even better than my expectations.

Comments about Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

Solid build & superb optics had me grinning from the very first time I used it. Worked so well in the studio I can't wait to see how it does in other situations. I sure wish it had been available when i went to Italy last April. The quiet auto focus, wide angle, & fast f1.8 would have served me well in the cathedrals & palaces there.
